LoveMusic! - 4Him - "Real Thing"

4Him - 25th Anniversary Tour "Real Thing"

4Him  (L-R) Marty Magehee, Andy Chrisman, Kirk Sullivan, Mark Harris

July 9, 2017

For many years 4Him blessed us with great music. In fact, more than 25 years of great music!

In November of 2015, my daughter Hannah surprised me with tickets to their last tour together, their "25th Anniversary Tour." What a joy it was to be there, hearing my favorite group of all time, sharing songs that I had listened to, probably in all of those 25 years.

In fact, when my four kids were older (Josh Ben, Hannah, and Christen), I heard them make comments about our family car travel times, listening to 4Him CDs. (And probably cassette tapes before then.)

Their song "Real Thing", really strikes at the heart of the matter, when we think about the world we live in, the people around us, and how we all need Jesus. He is the real thing.

Be blessed in your listening, as your heart catches the message, while your spirit longs to see the world...come to Jesus.

Jesus - the Real Thing.

Shalom my friends,

P.S. The YouTube recording you are about to hear is from that 25th Anniversary Tour itself. Hannah, Ben and I were also able to receive "pre-show" interview tickets with the guys when someone wasn't able to attend, and thus we got great seats near the front. My Canon SureShot camera had a workout, recording many videos and still shots during the interview time and concert that followed.

Enjoy the love that comes through the lyrics.

4 HIM LYRICS

"Real Thing"

I can dream about Heaven
Constantly both day and night
I can let my mind drift away
To a better place, a better time

Though there's nothing wrong
With thinking about
Forever by and by
All the while millions are still
Searching for a light

Maybe it is time we take a look
At here and now
Maybe we can change the destiny
Of a world that's crying out

For the truth we take for granted
Is too often left unsaid
We can get so Heaven minded
That sometimes we forget

That we're living in a real world
With real hurt and real pain
And all we really need is the real thing

When we look beyond our circumstances
And face reality
We'll realize that all we really need
Is just to see

Jesus in a real world

There are days when I look around
And I feel like hope is gone
There are times my heart is torn between
Who is right and what is wrong

There are causes I believe in
There are things I'll never change
But I'm finding all that matters
Is there's just one truth
One truth that remains

Verse of the Day from Daily Manna
Romans 16:17-19Fri October, 18, 2013

I urge you, brothers and sisters, to watch out for those who cause divisions and put obstacles in your way that are contrary to the teaching you have learned. Keep away from them. For such people are not serving our Lord Christ, but their own appetites. By smooth talk and flattery they deceive the minds of naive people. Everyone has heard about your obedience, so I rejoice because of you; but I want you to be wise about what is good, and innocent about what is evil.

Biography

In the business of music, 15 years might as well be a lifetime; however, for four ordinary guys who couldn’t imagine anything better than singing about Jesus, the past 15 years have been more like a dream come to life. 4HIM has been about sharing the gospel of Jesus Christ through the powerful, incomparable medium of music since their beginnings singing with the well-known ensemble group, Truth.

From the four ordinary guys who formed while sitting down at McDonald’s to explore the idea of forming a four-man pop-gospel group, 4HIM presents ENCORE…FOR FUTURE GENERATIONS, their final project as 4HIM, a collection of career favorites, as well as a solo song from each member.

“We couldn’t think of a better way to write the closing chapter to our story than to sing our way out,” 4HIM states, “We hope you hear our hearts in ENCORE and know how blessed we’ve been to be a part of your lives.”

Since their formation in 1989, their harmonic convergence—the likes of which hadn’t been heard in Christian music since the Imperials took audiences by storm in the late 1970s—blended the best of tradition from past decades in Christian music with modern pop sensibilities and no-holds-barred, real life lyrics. Christian radio ‘got it’ right of the box with the group’s first No. 1 single, “Where There Is Faith,” and audiences began to sit up and take notice of the fresh-faced foursome from down south.

4HIM managed to transcend any of those potential pratfalls, continuing to make music that not only met the needs of listeners but pushed the creative envelope as the mainstream pop music scene evolved into something a little less slick, less produced.

By the time 4HIM’s ‘best of’ album released in 2004, all four men were contemplating ‘where do we go from here?’ Not because they were drifting apart or because the opportunities were few and far between. No, call it sixth sense, the sense of discovery, of beginning to understand that there could be life beyond the ministry they’d devoted the biggest part of their adult lives to.

After much prayer, Andy Chrisman decided to pursue a lifelong passion as worship leader at a local church in Celebration, Florida. Mark Harris had begun writing new songs for a solo project. Marty and Kirk were also busy writing and doing production work on their own.

Each one, in his own time, began to feel the excitement of seeing new roads winding out before them. They began, one by one, to sense God saying “I am doing a new thing in you.” And so, with gratitude for all God has done over the past 15 years, they began to write the closing chapter in the story of 4HIM.

Taking a walk down memory lane, 4HIM recorded new versions of their biggest hits on the farewell project. Once again their longtime producer Michael Omartian produced the project, which features nine favorite 4HIM songs, in addition to a medley and one new track, “Unity (We Stand),” featuring guest vocalists Point of Grace and Jeromy Deibler of FFH. Four bonus solo songs from each band member will also be included.

“This project will hopefully capture the spirit of the songs and where we are now in 2005 musically, spiritually and thematically it will be a trip down memory lane with a new twist,” Mark Harris explains. “We wanted to do this last project as a gift to our loyal fans—to commemorate all the years of faithful support we have received from them.”

Throughout their time together, 4HIM has received much acclaim for their 11 hit albums including an RIAA Gold certified album (The Basics of Life), 24 No. 1 radio singles, eight Dove Awards including three “Group of the Year,” and a Grammy Award nomination as well as Alabama’s Music Hall of Fame for The Governor’s Achievement Award. In addition to their numerous tours across the nation, the group has also been featured performers with the Billy Graham and Louis Palau crusades.

History[edit source | editbeta]

Andy Chrisman, Mark Harris, Marty Magehee, and Kirk Sullivan originally met when they sang together in Truth, a Contemporary Christian vocal group founded in the late 1960s and directed by Roger Breland. Truth had a rotating roster of four male and four female vocalists. After three representatives from Benson Records attended several Truth concerts in the late 1980s during which Andy, Mark, Marty, and Kirk performed, Benson approached the quartet saying that they wanted to use the guys to create a new male four-member vocal group under the Benson label. "Where There Is Faith", their first single, stayed at No. 1 on the charts for eight weeks, two months before 4Him left Truth. Releasing their self-titled debut in 1990, they blended the traditions of Christian music's past, with modern pop production and practical lyrics. In 1995, they were featured in the Warren Chaney docudrama,America: A Call to Greatness.[1]

In 1996, with the release of The Message, 4Him changed their overall sound in an effort to keep pushing the creative limits of the group. The guys replaced the over-the-top orchestrations and choral vocal arrangements with a stripped down, acoustic band approach where one of the guys would sing lead and the other three would sing backing vocals. On 1998’s Obvious, each member took more ownership of their music – becoming more involved in the production and songwriting aspects.

By 2004, all four of the guys reevaluated the future of the ministry. After close to seventeen years together, the members of 4Him decided to embark on solo careers.[2] On September 23, 2006, they performed their final concert at Cottage Hill Baptist Church in Mobile, AL, the city where 4Him’s 17-year journey first started. At that concert, various individuals (including family members, record producers, management, and Truth founder Roger Breland) were recognized for their contributions to 4Him’s ministry.
