Today is the First Night of Chanukah

Chanukah is an eight-day holiday that marks the rededication of the Second Beit Hamikdash (Holy Temple) in 164 CE, after its desecration by King Antiochus, as well as the victory of the Jewish people in their fight against religious oppression. The holiday is observed by lighting an eight-branched Chanukah menorah each night. On the first night one candle is lit. A candle is added each night, culminating in 8 candles being lit on the last night. Find eight nights worth of Chanukah inspiration in The Israel Bible Daily Inspirationsdevotional.

"Let There Be Light" ✡ Israel's Largest Menorah on the Water! - ISRAEL TODAY

And God said, "Let there be light," and there was light. And God saw the light that it was good, and God separated between the light and between the darkness.

GENESIS (1:3-4)

Today's Israel Inspiration

The days of Chanukah were set aside for greatness and light from the time of Creation. Let's look at the story of Creation in the Bible. Counting from the very first Hebrew word of the Torah ("Bereishit"/"in the beginning"), the 25th word is "ohr"/light, alluding to the light of Chanukah on the 25th day of Kislev! Just as God "saw the light that it was good," and then separated it from darkness, on Chanukah we recall that a little light and hope can dispel the darkness of despair. Meir Panim (lit. "lighting up faces") is brightening the lives of the poor in Israel and giving hope to struggling families and impoverished citizens this Chanukah.

“Blessed by the Email I Received From You”

It’s great to hear from so many of you - stay in touch and let us know where in the world you are enjoying Israel365!

I am a new subscriber, but have already been blessed by the e-mail I received from you today. May God bless you abundantly! Nic Zwarts - Pretoria, Gauteng, South Africa.

Hi!  Just know that you all are in our thoughts and prayers. I have my Israel Flag attached to the outside of our house in support of Israel. After the world was so devastated about the awful violence on the people in Paris, France... I said to my church friends, "Israel has lived this way for 100+ years!  Now you know what they face every day!" ... My husband and I presently live in Arkansas. He is a Baptist Pastor. GOD bless and keep you and Israel safe is our prayer. Merle Huffman Stroh

"Fear Not, For I Am With You" ✡ Shabbat Shalom - ISRAEL365

Isaac went up to Beersheba. God appeared to him that night and said, “I am the God of your father Abraham, fear not for I am with you, I will bless you and increase your offspring.”

GENESIS (26:23, 24)

Shabbat Inspiration

In this week's Shabbat Torah portion (Genesis 25:19-28:9), Isaac followed in his father’s footsteps and returned to the well that his father Abraham had dug. ‘Beersheba’ in Hebrew means the "seventh well" named by Abraham in Genesis. Our Sages derive that Isaac is to be praised for continuing tradition and returning to the well of his father Abraham. This Chanukah, celebrate tradition and the miracles of the Jewish people in the Land of Israel with your own beautiful Menorah.

Fortress of Greek Occupation in Jerusalem Unearthed

An important archeological find has uncovered an ancient fortress which may have been used by the Greeks who oppressed the Jews, leading to the Maccabean revolt.

Bringing in the Hebrew Month of Kislev

Kislev marks the beginning of the winter and always falls out during the darkest days of the year. It is therefore a fitting time to celebrate the Jewish holiday of lights, Chanukah.
