“David” by Steve Martin, Love For His People ministry

“So he sent and brought him in. Now he was ruddy, with bright eyes, and good-looking. And the Lord said, “Arise, anoint him; for this is the one!” Then Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him in the midst of his brothers; and the Spirit of the Lord came upon David from that day forward. So Samuel arose and went to Ramah.” 1 Samuel 16:12-13, NKJV

As I do, I am sure you know many who are named David. In fact, to keep them separate in conversations with people I have nicknamed one “Rabbi” and the other “Cowboy”. I will let you figure out how I arrived at those specific names on your own.

But we all know the one named David in Scripture. He at times was called the shepherd boy, the son of Jesse, the youngest boy, the warrior, the worshiper, the psalmist, and most noted of all the king of Israel. One source says he is mentioned 1,011 times in Scripture – Old and New Testaments combined.

Do you realize David was a Jew?

Born in the lineage of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, David was a chosen Jew, from whom came the Messiah.

“There were fourteen generations from Abraham to David, another fourteen from David to the Babylonian exile, and yet another fourteen from the Babylonian exile to Christ.” Matthew 1:17, THE MESSAGE

In many Christian circles, whether growing up or in our present churches, it is rarely understood that this king of Israel, a forefather of Jesus (Yeshua) Himself, was a Jew, as Jesus Himself was. Jesus was the Promised One who would come after David, having the rightful kingship to rule. God the Father had chosen David, a man after God’s own heart, and yet one who committed several grievous sins, to be part of Mashiach’s (Messiah’s) lineage.

“Always remember that Jesus Christ, a descendant of King David, was raised from the dead. This is the Good News I preach.” 2 Timothy, 2:8-9 Holy Bible, New Living Translation

Many of us read David’s writings every day as part of our Bible reading. The psalms are always available to bring us words of comfort, courage, and inspiration, as David expressed his heart readily and truthfully, of which we too can relate easily.

When I go to Israel again, hopefully yet this year for my 23rd time, I may stop in another hour at the tomb of King David, as many in Jerusalem do. Located in the lower level under the famous Upper Room, where Yeshua could have shared the Last Supper, the Passover Seder with His disciples, and visited regularly by many tour groups, David’s tomb is not so much, except daily by faithful Orthodox Jews who meet there in solemn prayer times. I am grateful I was allowed on several locations to take photos.

One of my favorite verses I first memorized is found within this prayerful meditation of David.

“Trust in the Lord, and do good; dwell in the land, and feed on His faithfulness. Delight yourself also in the Lord, and He shall give you the desires of your heart. Commit your way to the Lord, trust also in Him, and He shall bring it to pass. He shall bring forth your righteousness as the light, and your justice as the noonday. Rest in the Lord, and wait patiently for Him; do not fret because of him who prospers in his way, because of the man who brings wicked schemes to pass. Cease from anger, and forsake wrath; Do not fret — it only causes harm. For evildoers shall be cut off; but those who wait on the Lord, they shall inherit the earth.” Psalm 37:3-9, NKJV

David can be an inspiration to each of us as we meditate on the words inspired by the Holy Spirit which were written down and kept through all these centuries for our benefit. I hope you make it a consistent discipline to read them on a regular basis.

This past week I was sent a vision from someone in South Africa, a dream from someone in New Zealand, and another dream from someone here in the US. All of them pointed to a coming storm over this nation. But, they also revealed a grand conclusion!
