Paul Ryan to Israel's Knesset: “We Stand Shoulder to Shoulder With You”

Speaker of the US House of Representatives Paul Ryan stressed that the US relationship with Israel is more important than ever at a meeting this morning, April 4, at the Knesset with Knesset Speaker Yuli Edelstein.

“We will work shoulder to shoulder with you against threats,“ Speaker Ryan said. “That’s why I came here and this is the point I wanted to stress.”

“Our friendship with Israel is more important to us than it was in the past,” Ryan added at the meeting with his Israeli counterpart.

Following Congressional legislation last June requiring European trade partners to reject BDS, members of Congress introduced the Combating BDS Act of 2016 this past February, which gave federal approval to US states to divest from or prohibit investment in entities associated with BDS [the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions Movement against Israel].

“I and members of Congress are working and fighting vigorously with every discovery of BDS and boycott of Israel,” Ryan emphasized.

Paul Ryan has been Speaker of the House for about half a year after having been elected to the position last October following the resignation of his predecessor John Boehner. Ryan elaborated upon his display of friendship with Israel during his current tenure as Speaker of the House.

“I entered the position not too long ago and my first work meeting was with President Reuven Rivlin,” noted Ryan. “Also, this trip of mine to Israel is my first [as Speaker of the House].”

“This was not done by accident,” continued Ryan. “I wanted to come to Israel first to emphasize the level of US commitment to Israel and the valiant friendship with Israel is important to us.”

Speaker Edelstein also expressed his appreciation for the friendship between the United States and Israel.

“We know we have true friends in the US, in Congress, and in the White House,” Edelstein said to Ryan. “I very much appreciate your presence here along with an entourage of other members of Congress.”

The European Union’s publishing of official guidelines on the labeling of Israeli “settler” products was met with praise and approval by the Palestinian Authority, America and most European governments.

But it was categorically rejected by the president of the EU Parliament, Martin Schulz.

The labeling fiasco is aimed at harming Israeli businesses situated in the so-called “West Bank” and the Golan Heights in order to drive the Jews out of those territories claimed by the Palestinians and Syrians, respectively.

Schulz, however, recognized who the true victims of the policy would be.

“I oppose labeling products from the territories. It will mainly hurt the Palestinians, who make an honest living there,” noted the German politician, referencing the fact that the Israeli businesses in question employ thousands of Palestinian Arabs.

Schulz’s remarks were made during a meeting in Berlin with Knesset Speaker Yuli Edelstein, who added, “Israel will survive the labeling of products. Those who will not survive are the thousands of Palestinian families who work shoulder to shoulder with their Jewish friends and have a shared life there. It will hurt their economy, their lives and their families, and it will destroy the seeds of peace that exist in those employment zones.”

Edelstein cynically wondered to whom Europe would have him surrender the Golan, assuming he was willing to do so. “Just tell me, to whom? To Syria? To ISIS?”

Nor was Schulz alone among Europe’s elite in opposing the labeling of Israeli products.

Earlier this month, some 200 EU officials, diplomats, parliamentarians and NATO representatives welcomed in the New Year at a party featuring Israeli “settler” products.

In toasting the New Year, Israeli Ambassador to the EU David Walzer and his guests raised glasses filled with wine from the Golan Heights, before digging in to Israeli foods like falafel and being entertained by an Israeli DJ.

Israel’s Knesset last week renewed its Christian Allies Caucus, something that must be done after each election. The fact that the Knesset continues this trend is evidence that it views relations between Israel and the Christian world with increasing importance.

The event, chaired by Knesset Speaker Yuli Edelstein, was attended by no fewer than 25 Knesset members from eight different factions, including three government ministers.

New caucus chairman MK Robert Ilatov (Israel Beiteinu) said he would work to further strengthen ties to the 32 sister caucuses in parliaments around the world in a broader effort to combat global boycotts of the Jewish state.

“There are many challenges that lie ahead, but I have no doubt that together, we will succeed in defending and blessing the State of Israel and the well-being of its people,” Ilatov told his fellow Israeli lawmakers and the numerous Christian leaders at the gathering.

Former Israeli Ambassador to the US Michael Oren, who today serves as a Knesset member with the Kulanu Party, also addressed the gathering, noting that as a Christian nation “US-Israel relations go back to spiritual ties. …We are on a holy mission to ensure the Jewish state remains strong and beloved.”

Oren further pointed out that were Jesus to come today to Bethlehem (or any number of other places he ministered, like the Temple Mount) he’d be labeled a “Jewish settler.”

Caucus director Josh Reinstein summed up the event by stating that “Israel is now dependent on Christian support. We will be tested like we never have before.”

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is scheduled to travel to Rome next week, where he is set to meet with Pope Francis for the first time, according to the Jerusalem Post. Netanyahu will meet with US Secretary of State John Kerry there as well his office announced Wednesday.

The prime minister is expected to meet with Kerry on October 23 and discuss Iran and the ongoing peace talks.

President Shimon Peres met with the pope in April, and Knesset Speaker Yuli Edelstein spoke with him at the Vatican last week

While there has been much conversation as to when the pope will visit Israel, no official date has been set as of yet. During his meeting with Edelstein, the pope said, “I will come, yes I’ll come,” in response to the Knesset speaker’s invitation.
