COMMENTARY: The Darkness Closes In - ISRAEL TODAY Charles Gardner

COMMENTARY: The Darkness Closes In

Sunday, June 11, 2017 |  Charles Gardner  ISRAEL TODAY
As the dust begins to settle on the British General Election with a hung Parliament result, I believe we are entering a dark period for our nation. That’s not all bad news, because it is at such times that the light shines brightest.
Prime Minister Theresa May has been forced to form a government with the help of Northern Ireland’s Democratic Unionist Party (DUP), who are not only pro-Israel, but also opposed to same-sex marriage!
One candidate seemed to sum up the situation, perhaps inadvertently, by quoting the first line of a well-known hymn, “The day thou gavest, Lord, is ended…” no doubt referring to the long night he had endured waiting for the results. But it was prophetic of where we are, especially in terms of the next line: “The darkness falls at thy behest…”
Mrs May called the election in order to win a mandate for conducting Brexit negotiations from a position of strength, but the gamble has not paid off. The chips are down. Her Conservative Party has the most seats, but does not have an overall majority following a campaign which came down to a two-horse race.
Labour did far better than expected despite being led by a man of the hard left who has courted the IRA, Hamas and Hezbollah, and who only two years ago paid a visit to the grave of a Palestinian terrorist.
But he successfully won over swathes of impressionable young people, who turned out to vote in apparently unprecedented numbers. Somehow they have rallied to his cause, which seems mainly about turning our backs on austerity (i.e. spending money we haven’t got) and promising to abolish university tuition fees – bait which has proved very tasty, not only for students, but also for their parents. But who will pay for it?
It is hardly surprising that the youth of today – a second generation brought up largely without the biblical ethics that underpinned our civilization for centuries – are for the most part interested in no-one but themselves. So a short-term magic wand proves very attractive while Mrs May’s social care policies cut little ice.
Though she has been a loyal supporter of Israel, which is obviously important, I’m not sure a large majority for Mrs May would have been a good thing. The truth is that none of the main parties mentioned Christianity in their manifestos. Policies in support of healthy family life were almost totally absent – in fact the opposite was the case. For they all appear determined to incorporate the LGBT+ agenda into every facet of national life, even to the point of compulsory education on sexual relationships (including the supposed normality of gay sex) for nursery school children.
Caroline Ansell, defending a slim Conservative majority in Eastbourne, was hounded by the Press over her evangelical faith and because she had dared to employ an intern from the Christian campaign group CARE.
For many in this country, the gay issue has become like the nursery classic about the Emperor’s NewClothes, in which the emperor is brainwashed into thinking he is wonderfully dressed until a small child shrieks in horror: “The Emperor has no clothes!”
But with the DUP (with ten MPs) opposing the gay agenda and potentially crucial to government policy being carried in the foreseeable future, the naked truth may well be revealed.
We’ve become a society that, with its ‘diversity and equality’ program, is tolerant of everyone and everything – except Christians.
We are facing a double whammy – the threat of Islamic terrorism on the one hand, and the danger of collapse from within that comes to all decadent societies. I have a picture of a gaping wound which only Jesus can heal. The prophet Isaiah foretold of how the Messiah would die on the cross for the sins of the world, and that “by his wounds we are healed”. (Isaiah 53.5)
In discarding God from our culture following a world war when we could so easily have been invaded but for the prayers of the nation, we have poisoned ourselves with atheism. And we will only be cured when we acknowledge our diseased condition, and return to Christ for cleansing.
The Church, meanwhile, has been intimidated into silence for fear of being dubbed homophobic. But Christians must stop denying their Lord. Part of the problem for Mrs May was that, while claiming to be guided by her (Christian) faith, she is said to have been the prime mover (as Home Secretary) behind the introduction onto the statute book of same-sex marriage – a total contradiction of biblical teaching and one of the worst laws ever passed in this land. And yet we have been largely silent in calling her to account.
Liberal-Democrat leader Tim Farron, a committed believer, initially inspired hope among Christian voters until he too denied that gay sex was wrong. And then Mrs May sacked Isle of Wight MP Andrew Turner for his biblical views on sexual ethics.
We have seen a downward spiral of morality on a par with that which ultimately led to the collapse from within of Roman civilization. St Paul’s famous letter to the first century Roman Christians makes this absolutely clear as he encourages them to avoid being influenced by the depraved culture of those around them, whose descent into lust and lawlessness started by denying God as creator. God’s eternal power was obvious from the beauty of creation, “but their thinking became futile and their foolish hearts were darkened.” (Romans 1.21) Isn’t this what we have been teaching our children for generations: that we evolved from apes and God had nothing to do with the beauty we see all around us?
So for the Roman pagans, one thing led to another until they ended up engaging in “shameful lusts” (Romans 1.26) involving “unnatural” sexual relationships (i.e. lesbian and homosexual activity).
It’s no use pussyfooting over this issue with supposed compassion. We have participated, as those unbelievers in Rome did, in the suppression of truth, and we wonder why our walls are falling down and our bridges are breached as we come under attack from enemies of God and democracy.
The Bible says: “Righteousness exalts a nation, but sin condemns any people.” (Proverbs 14.34)
We stand condemned as a nation, but there is a way out! Hear the wonderful words of Jesus: “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him.” (John 3.16f)
Our walls are broken down because of our sin, and they will only be restored when we address the decadence in our midst and return to the God of our fathers.
As it is, the LGBT+ agenda has penetrated every crack and crevice of our national institutions, and you are simply not allowed to object – Christians who have done so have been hauled before the courts. We tolerate everyone else – but not Christians. Where is the place of personal conscience in our supposed liberal society?
We have built on sand, and are now found wanting. A fierce storm has hit us, leaving us wobbling and about to collapse. We need to rebuild on the Rock, which is Christ, who said: “Everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell with a great crash.” (Matthew 7.26f)
Thank God for media outlets like Revelation TV, who hosted their own election night commenting on the great issues from a biblical perspective. One of their panel made the pertinent point that church leaders are failing to give guidance on voting to their congregations, as mosques clearly do. The Bible speaks into the issues at stake, so it is surely the duty of pastors and teachers to demonstrate, from the Scriptures, how certain policies are either right or wrong.
Finally, we need to recapture total confidence in the gospel as the sole means by which our beloved nation can be saved from its own folly. Let us say with St Paul: “For I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God that brings salvation to everyone who believes: first to the Jew, then to the Gentile.” (Romans 1.16)

Trump's Effect on the Israeli Right - Tsvi Sadan ISRAEL TODAY

Trump's Effect on the Israeli Right

Thursday, February 16, 2017 |  Tsvi Sadan  ISRAEL TODAY
For Israeli right-wingers, the movement that carried Donald Trump into the White House is like a blessed wind filling the sails of a motionless ship on calm seas.
Trump's bold pro-Israel stand filled the right-wing constituency with high hopes, some would say too high, that during his presidency Netanyahu's government would finally be able to implement its version of the Zionist vision. This entails, among other things, constitutionalizing Israel as a Jewish state and annexing at least parts of the West Bank.
No less import, Trump's boldness inspires ministers and Knesset Members to express views they would not dare say prior to his election.
A day before Netanyahu flew to meet President Trump, the head of Jewish Home party, Education Minister Naftali Bennett, said that "after decades of misery, now there is a chance for good tidings, for a new way, getting off the idea of another Palestinian state in addition those in Gaza and Jordan."
At the 14th Jerusalem Conference hosted by Besheva Media Group, Justice Minister Ayelet Shaked expressed the same kind of bold spirit. "I view the election of President Trump as a landmark event, in a way, only the tip of the iceberg of an awe-inspiring global chain of events." The State of Israel, she said, "has a rare opportunity to shape its future and borders … it is our duty to do it … we have to make the whole world recognize our legitimate presence in Judea, Samaria and the Jordan Valley … we must stop feeding the illusion that Israel will withdraw, freeze, disengage, hand territories over to our enemies."
Shaked concluded her speech with "For Zion's sake I will not keep silent, for Jerusalem's sake I will not remain quiet" (Isaiah 62:1).
Speaking at the same conference, Internal Security Minister Gilad Erdan said that "we have here a new historic opportunity for a new era. We return to proudly say that the land of Israel belongs to the Jewish people." The Temple Mount, he stressed, "is the most holy place for the Jewish people, and only for the Jewish people."
Last, but not least, President Rivlin, who tries hard to pacify every minority, said that over the years Israel has cleverly and patiently extended its sovereignty over East Jerusalem and the Golan Heights. He didn't once mention a Palestinian state. Instead, Rivlin said that if Israel decides to extend its sovereignty to Judea and Samaria, it must also grant Israeli residency status to the Palestinians. Rivlin stressed his belief that "Zion is all ours," meaning that Israel and the West Bank should be under Israeli sovereignty.
The next coming months will tell how bold is Israel in turning such clear and unambiguous statements to reality.

Evangelicals Storms Washington to Push Pro-Israel Legislation and Strengthen Trump Ties - Abra Forman BREAKING ISRAEL NEWS

CUFI Storms Washington to Push Pro-Israel Legislation and Strengthen Trump Ties

“My help cometh from Hashem, who made heaven and earth.” Psalms 121:2 (The Israel Bible™)
Pro-Israel Evangelical group Christians United for Israel (CUFI) is sending hundreds of members to Washington, DC this week in order to influence Israel policies being debated on Capitol Hill.
Coming from 49 states, 260 CUFI members are flying into the capital Wednesday with the goal of pushing two congressional measures which slam the UN’s recent anti-settlement resolution and slash security budgets for America’s embassies worldwide until the US Embassy in Israel is moved from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, an act President-elect Donald Trump has said is a top priority for his administration.
Behind the mass migration of activists is a general move for CUFI away from associating with more moderate Israel advocacy organizations which support a two-state solution and towards Trump, who has made his strong pro-Israel and pro-Jerusalem positions a main part of his platform.

Joel C. Rosenberg's Blog: Trump’s emerging national security team is encouraging. Pro-Israel.

joel-foxnews-dec2016

New post on Joel C. Rosenberg's Blog

So far, Trump’s emerging national security team is encouraging. Pro-Israel & serious about confronting Radical Islam. But Tillerson at State? Close ties to Putin raises serious concerns. [Video & transcript of my interview on Fox News]

by joelcrosenberg
(Washington, D.C.) -- On Sunday, I was interviewed on the Fox News Channel by anchor Shannon Bream on a range of foreign policy and national security topics, including:
  • the tragic terrorist attack on Coptic Christians in Egypt over the weekend
  • the future of US-Israel relations under a Trump-Pence administration
  • the President-elect's emerging national security team, including concerns over ExxonMobil CEO Rex Tillerson as a possible Secretary of State, given his very close ties to Russian President Vladimir Putin
To watch the video, please click here. Here, too, is the transcript of the interview.
SHANNON BREAM, FOX NEWS ANCHOR: Joining us now is the author of The First Hostage and many other best-sellers. He also served as a top advisor to leaders both here in the U.S. and in Israel, where he now lives. Joel Rosenberg, always good to see you.
ROSENBERG: Great to be with you.
BREAM: Let me start by getting your reaction to the bombing of the Coptic Christians in Egypt. We've often talked about the threat to religious minorities in that area, and Egypt had really been working towards stability. This is a setback.
ROSENBERG: It is. Look, Radical Islam is trying to destroy Christian communities in Syria, in Iraq, and now in Egypt. President el-Sisi has got his hands full. But it's interesting when you think about President Trump -- as then candidate Trump -- who were the two leaders he met with at the U.N. [in September]? Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Egyptian President el-Sisi. I think that strengthening a Sunni Arab ally like el-Sisi, like the king of Jordan and others is going to be important. But this is a devastating blow, and as an Evangelical -- an Israeli Evangelical, in that sense -- my heart goes out to our Christian brothers and sisters in the Coptic Church. We need to be praying for them, and as a country -- both America, Israel and our other allies -- we need to be standing with Egypt in a very challenging moment.
BREAM: And by the way, one of our allies, Israel -- where you now live full time -- are taking delivery of a couple of F-35s, and talking about how that will give Israel different ways to probe, to gather surveillance, to go into places undetected, and they live in a very, very rough neighborhood.
ROSENBERG: There has been a lot of criticism by conservatives that President Obama has been horrible towards Israel. Look, there has been a horrible relationship between President Obama and Netanyahu, but we do have a Memorandum of Understanding of $38 billion of military cooperation over the next ten years, and these F-35s are critical both to U.S. national security and to Israel's, especially with the Iran threat rising.
BREAM: And, as you know, many people say that our administration has been generally supportive of Israel but maybe there was a lack of chemistry between President Obama and Prime Minister Netanyahu....
ROSENBERG: (laughing) yes, maybe....
BREAM: ....that's a nice way to put that -- but here is what Prime Minister Netanyahu had to say in a 60 Minutes interview that's coming up later. We have a clip of him talking about how he views incoming President Trump.
PRIME MINISTER NETANYAHU: I know Donald Trump. I know him very well. And I think his attitude to support Israel is very clear. He feels very warmly about the Jewish State, about the Jewish people, and about Jewish people. There's no question about that.
BREAM: He talked about how Trump will be truly supportive and understand the situation that Israel is facing there.
ROSENBERG: I was just with Netanyahu when he gave a briefing to about 400 foreign diplomats -- ambassadors and defense attaches -- in Jerusalem, just a week and a half ago. Netanyahu described himself as "supremely optimistic" about Israel's future. He didn't mention Trump in the speech, but the context seemed to be very strong, "I now have a friend and an ally in the White House." And, of course, Vice President Mike Pence, I know him well, is strongly pro-Israel.
This is the first time that Netanyahu has ever had a Republican in the White House while he's been a Prime Minister, and he's the longest serving Prime Minister in the history of Israel. So he's encouraged. And 83% of Israelis now say they believe that Trump will be pro-Israel.
You look at the Cabinet picks that are coming -- General Mattis [at Defense], Mike Pompeo at CIA. Those are strong if you're looking for someone who will focus on Radical Islam and taking on both Iran and ISIS.
I'm concerned about [Rex] Tillerson. Obviously, you just had that segment [talking about the pros and cons of Tillerson]. I think President Trump should be talking to a CEO of ExxonMobil and someone who knows Putin well. But Putin is a serious challenge -- a challenge to the Middle East in Syria, a challenge to NATO, Georgia, Ukraine, Crimea, the Baltics that I'm concerned about. Tillerson does not strike me as a conservative, good choice to draw a line in the sand with Putin.
BREAM: Plenty of Senators asking questions....
ROSENBERG: ....and rightly so...
BREAM: ...and there will be a thorough vetting of him, if he is the pick.
ROSENBERG: This could be a head fake to make us feel better about somebody else.
Compare [this with] how Trump is dealing with China where he's talking tough, but he sends Terry Branstad -- the Governor of Iowa -- as a friend to China [to be the new Ambassador] to say you've got someone you can talk to. That's not how he's approaching Putin, and he needs to.
BREAM: All right -- Joel Rosenberg -- always good to see you.
ROSENBERG: Thank you.

POLL: Israelis Certain Trump Will Be Pro-Israel - Israel Today

POLL: Israelis Certain Trump Will Be Pro-Israel

Tuesday, December 06, 2016 |  Israel Today Staff

A new survey confirms that a solid majority of Israelis believe Donald Trump will enact pro-Israel policies as the next president of the United States.
Commissioned by the Ruderman Family Foundation, the poll revealed that an overwhelming 83 percent of Israelis anticipate Trump will be a “pro-Israel president.”
That is a far different result than when Israelis were asked the same question following the election of Barack Obama in 2008.
But that doesn’t mean they think he’ll bring peace.
Just 45 percent of respondents believe Trump can succeed in negotiating a final status peace agreement between Israel and the Arabs.
Unlike with past presidents, a whopping 75 percent of the Israelis questioned said Trump won’t let the lack of a peace agreement stop him from moving the US Embassy to Jerusalem.
Regarding Iran, a 45 percent plurality of respondents said there is a possible-to-good chance Trump will tear up the Obama-brokered nuclear agreement. Israel views that agreement as a threat to its long-term security.
