Chicken Heads
“Come to Me, all who are weary and heavy-laden, and I will give you rest.” Matthew 11:28-29, NASU
Personally, I think that many Americans think that they are so awesome when they continually fill up their refrigerator calendars or their Google calendars (if younger than 60?), or their daily schedules, their non-sleeping time in fact, with events, travel, sports outings, and much more…and then tell others how busy they are.
It has almost become a proudful thing. A badge of honor worn while strutting around.
Ok. Not almost. It has become a proudful thing.
I was the same. When someone would ask me, “How are you doing?” and I would reply, “Oh, busy as usual” it was as if my “busyness” proved that I was special, always on the go, never taking the time to smell the roses. Or the lilacs if you prefer that succulent scent in Iowa and Illinois which I really do enjoy in the spring.
And then after all our busyness, we collapse on the comfy couch or in our cozy bed for some ZZZ’s, having rarely stopped during the day to acknowledge the One Who gave us the time we have, to use it wisely and productively, for His purposes.
No wonder the sleeping pills and other forms of sedatives, be they come in liquid or solid form, are so popular. We can’t stop our heads from spinning long enough to relax and fall asleep without them.
Growing up in Cedar Falls, Iowa, right on Main Street, our neighbor Mr. M. used to raise chickens, and when he chopped their heads off to begin the process for eating later, they would be on the run. Thus, the saying, “They are chickens with their heads cut off.” Non-stop running around.
Are you the same?
So why did the Lord God, the One Who created us in the beginning, and still creates so many at conception yet today, tell us clearly to rest, even if just one day out of the week?
Whatever happened to setting apart Sundays, taking time off at the beginning of the week for some, or Saturdays off at the end of the week for others? No longer in America, as I would assume in other nations, is a day of rest not needed. Oh, how smart and wise we have become by being continually on the go.
We are non-stop busy, and proud of it. Chickens with our heads cut off.
“Rest in the Lord, and wait patiently for Him; do not fret because of him who prospers in his way, because of the man who brings wicked schemes to pass.” Psalm 37:7, NKJV
Knowing that the Lord, the Maker of us all, tells us to rest, to take one day out of the week to do so, is not “old school” stuff. It is wisdom and acknowledgment of His rule in our lives.
“And He said to them, “The Sabbath was made for man, and not man for the Sabbath.” Mark 2:27-28, NKJV
The Lord, in all His wisdom and understanding as God, gave us one day out of the week to be set aside, to slow down, to rest. He gave us Sabbath, Shabbat in Hebrew, because He knew, and knows, we will ultimately break down if we don’t take time to rest.
You may again say that you are unbreakable and need not take time to chill out, but I urge my generation to go back to the days when we did so. And for my kid’s sake and your children, I urge you to not be as those around you who say you have to be as themselves and heed the Word of the Lord to do what He says to do.
Enjoy a day of rest this weekend, and every weekend. For your sake and all others.
