After the tremendous miracle of the exodus from Egypt and while the Israelites were getting their first tastes of freedom at the onset of their sojourn in the desert, God reminds His beloved nation of what He did for them. Why does God use the metaphor of 'eagle's wings' to make this statement? Explain our commentators: almost all birds carry their young in their claws to defend against higher-flying predatorial birds. But the eagle, the bird that flies the highest, carries its young on its back, within its wings, as a show of tender care and love. We are meant to understand from this that we are the young and God is the eagle; no matter what happens to the people of Israel, God will always come and rescue us with loving arms. A modern manifestation of God's promises is no doubt the incredible revolution of aircraft carriers, which have the ability to bring hundreds of people at any given time to the Holy Land and be once again enfolded in the wings of God's love.
