Faith Helped Goalie Tim Howard Deal with Tourette's

Team USA's brilliant goal defense at the World Cup in Brazil has turned goalie Tim Howard into a social media sensation.

During the U.S.-Belgium game this week, Howard blocked 16 shots on goal, a World Cup record. And although the United States was eliminated from the competition in a 2-1 loss, Howard was still voted the best player of the game.

Last Tuesday's defining game with Belgium drew an audience of 21 million television viewers in the United States, a nation that is slowly catching on to the rest of the world's top sport.

The team returned to the United States Thursday with its now-famous goalie a social media phenomenon. A trending hashtag #ThingsTimHowardCouldSave includes saving the Titanic from sinking and the White House from the alien attack in the movie "Independence Day."

Social media also named him a "Minister of Defense," prompting a congratulatory call from Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel who invited the team to visit the Pentagon.

Despite the media attention, the road to his phenomenal performance at the World Cup has not been an easy one for Howard.

At 10 years of age Howard was diagnosed with Tourette's syndrome, a neurological disorder that produces physical and verbal tics. As he struggled with his condition, Howard said knew he could count on his grandmother for peace and stability.

"Through her, God revealed His love for me as well," he said. "It wasn't long before I was following in her footsteps. I wanted the same kind of faith and peace she had, and that is exactly what God game me."

Howard lives out his faith on the soccer pitch and in his community in the United Kingdom, where he plays for the Everton Football Club in Liverpool.

According to the Huffington Post, he regularly volunteers with a youth group at Bramhall Baptist Church, playing soccer with the children before and after Bible lessons.

"Today, I am blessed to be living a dream," Howard wrote in an Athletes in Action article. "And yet, if it all went away tomorrow, I know I would still have peace."

"That probably sounds crazy to most people, but that's the kind of peace Christ gives," he said. "It is rooted in His love, and it surpasses all understanding."

World Cup: Anti-Semitic Displays, Iranian Love for Israel

World Cup: Anti-Semitic Displays, Iranian Love for Israel

Tuesday, June 24, 2014 |  Israel Today Staff
Israel might not be in the World Cup, but the nation’s attention is still very much fixed on the global sporting event taking place in Brazil.
And there is much happening at the World Cup that concerns Israel beyond the exciting gameplay, which thousands of Israelis have travelled half-way around the world to watch in person.
On Saturday, a spectator managed to run out onto the field during the German-Ghana match, take off his shirt and display for millions of viewers around the world the anti-Semitic and Nazi messages scrawled on his body.
FIFA, the World Cup’s governing body, was criticized after none of its own officials did anything to end the incident. The Nazi sympathizer had to be escorted off the field by a member of the Ghana team.
Earlier during a match between Russia and Croatia, a number of people in the crowd reportedly displayed neo-Nazi banners.
But it wasn’t all hate and racism.
When a group of celebrating Iranian fans were approached by a reporter from Israel’s Channel 2 News, they responded very positively.
“Israel? Israel is lovely,” one Iranian told the Israeli reporter before kissing him on the cheek. Another chimed in: “Israel and Iran are brothers. We have no problems [with you].”
When told by the Israeli that the Jewish state is “unfortunately not in the World Cup,” a third Iranian sympathized and said, “Next time. Don’t worry. We are here to enjoy ourselves. We aren’t going to win the World Cup, but we are having fun.”
Another Iranian fan holding the flag of his nation asked, “You are from Israel? Come on, we love Israel! My girlfriend is Jewish.” The girlfriend then informed the Israeli that her brother lives in the Jewish state.

While Israeli soldiers scour Judea and Samaria in search of three abducted Jewish teens, average Israelis and Palestinians have taken to social media with their contrasting views on the situation.
The Palestinian side has exploded in a celebratory campaign distinguished by a three-finger salute. Local Arabs of all ages have been posting photos of themselves and their children holding three fingers aloft to commemorate the kidnapping of three defenseless Jewish youths.
Those participating in this campaign are calling the abducted Israelis the “three Shalits,” in reference to Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit, who was abducted in 2006 to Gaza where he was held captive until Israel finally agreed to trade 1,027 jailed terrorists for him in 2011.
Palestinians and their supporters abroad hope to blackmail Israel into freeing even more terrorists in exchange for the currently missing youths.
Israelis distraught by the abduction have also taken to social media, primarily Facebook, in a campaign dubbed “Bring Back Our Boys.” Israelis, Jews living abroad and supporters of Israel worldwide have been uploading photos of themselves holding signs with the slogan.
Even fans at the World Cup in Brazil have seen in photos supporting the campaign.
