A Land Flowing With Milk And Honey

In the Bible, Eretz Yisrael (the Land of Israel) is described as flowing with milk and honey. In a literal sense, this refers to goat's milk and date honey. On a metaphorical level, milk is a nutritional necessity, whereas honey is a savory delicacy. Hashem (God) promises that the Land of Israel will not only sustain His nation with the basic essentials for survival, but He will bless the land with sweetness and prosperity. A Land Flowing With Milk and Honey

The above is one of the most beloved Biblical description of the Land of Israel. Rashi, a medieval Biblical commentator, explained this description literally: Milk flows from the goats, and honey comes from the dates and figs of the Land of Israel. Ramban, a second medieval Biblical scholar who lived approximately 200 years after Rashi, added that the word "flowing" in Deuteronomy 26:13 indicates exceptional fertility and abundance. Baklava, pictured above, is a popular and widely enjoyed dessert in Israel. Baklava's sweetness parallels the sweetness of the Land of Israel. One can not help but focus on the words "a land flowing with milk and honey" while enjoying this delicacy.

Shabbat Inspiration

Throughout the Bible, the Land of Israel is described as "flowing with milk and honey." On the Jewish New Year, Rosh Hashana, which begins at sundown on September 20th, there is a popular custom to eat apples dipped in honey in hopes that Hashem will grant us a sweet new year. There is a difference between the sweetness of an apple and the sweetness of honey. It is not surprising that apples are sweet! In general, fruit which grows on trees is sweet and delicious. Honey, on the other hand, comes from a bee, an insect that is forbidden for Jews to consume and even has the potential to cause great pain by stinging. The sweetness of the apple represents the small joys in life. These types of joys are often taken for granted in the same way that a delicious apple is often overlooked. The sweetness of honey, however, represents the joy that we experience when we, as humans, can overcome challenges and tribulations. While life is full of painful “bee stings,” if we can endure those tests and difficult times, we will ultimately emerge stronger, happier, and more successful.

120 Years Ago, Ten Christians Fulfilled Zechariah 8:23

Exactly 120 years ago, Theodor Herzl invited ten Christians to the First Zionist Congress, thereby paving the way for the modern state of Israel while adhering precisely, and perhaps unconsciously, to a Biblical prophecy.
