Throughout the book of Joshua, the Children of Israel are told “to be strong” and “to be courageous”. It is significant that this command applies to both spiritual tasks, such as observing the entire Torah of Moses, and to physical tasks, such as fighting battles in the Land of Israel. A complete national life requires both spiritual and physical strength. In today’s Israeli army, there are many soldiers who exemplify this through their devotion to both Torah study and to military service. These students and graduates of Zionist seminaries are both exemplary soldiers and Torah scholars, and serve as role models for all.
