Response from my correspondence - from the desk of Congresswoman Alma S. Adams on why she voted for LGBTQ legislation. (Not my stance. Steve Martin)

US Rep. from 12th District of North Carolina - Alma Adams

May 18, 2019

Greetings readers of our Love For His People website.

Previous to an upcoming vote regarding certain legislation in our US Congress, the House of Representatives, I contacted my representative Alma Adams, from my 12th District in North Carolina (whom I didn't vote for, and will not in the future.)

As I often write in my Now Think On This messages, if believers and those who stand for biblical principles sit back and let others rule, then we will live with what they decide is best for us, in their minds.

I for one am putting my vote and voice where my mouth, and messages, have been.

After writing her in opposition to this legislation, letting her know that I too, whom I believe yet stands with the majority of Americans who don't want 5% or less dictating what and how we shall live (isn't that what THEY say about us!), her office responded with the letter below to my email.

If we want to yet have freedom for ourselves, our children, and our grandchildren in America, of the biblically, God-fearing kind, we better wake up and oppose that which is being written into our national, state and local laws by those who don't.

Those of us who stand for the unborn, the gift of marriage between a man and a woman, the knowledge that being born a boy means you are a boy, as are girls, than don't just read about these things happening, or watch the news and say, "Oh well", but actually do something about it.

If not now, when?

Ahava and shalom,

Dear Mr. Martin:

Thank you for contacting me to express your thoughts concerning H.R. 5, the Equality Act. I appreciate you taking the time to share your thoughts, and I welcome the opportunity to respond.

H.R. 5, the Equality Act, would amend the Civil Rights Act of 1964 to protect LGBTQ Americans from discrimination. This legislation would prohibit discrimination on the basis of sex, sexual orientation, and gender identity in public accommodations and facilities, employment, housing, credit, and the jury system. Additionally, this legislation would allow the Department of Justice to intervene in equal protection actions in federal court and protect individuals who have been treated unfairly on such bases. In the public education system, sexual orientation and gender identity are added as protected classes, but sex is not. As such, this legislation does not apply to single-sex schools, nor does this legislation affect houses of worship. Additionally, contrary to some reports, parents would still be allowed to make medical decisions for their minor children under the Equality Act.

Equal treatment under the law is a core American value. I firmly believe that everyone deserves to be treated equally regardless of their sexual orientation or the state they live in. North Carolina alone is home to over 320,000 LGBTQ adults; and despite these numbers, our state ranks among the lowest in the nation for LGBTQ equality. You can read my full statement regarding the introduction of H.R. 5 here and my statement on my vote in favor of H.R. 5 here. On May 17, 2019, H.R. 5 passed the House of Representatives by a vote of 236-173. While we may disagree on this issue, I truly appreciate the opportunity to share my views with you and respect your deeply-held beliefs.

Thank you again for contacting me. I welcome the opportunity to hear about the issues that are important to you and North Carolina's 12th District and look forward to continuing to work together to build One Mecklenburg. If you would like to receive regular updates from me on this and other congressional issues, please visit my website at https://adams.house.gov or sign up for my newsletter at https://adams.house.gov/contact/newsletter. I am honored to represent you in Congress.
