Searching For God - Now Think On This by Steve Martin

Searching For God
- Now Think On This
by Steve Martin

“…for the Lord searches all hearts, and understands every intent of the thoughts. If you seek Him, He will let you find Him..." 1 Chronicles 28:9 NASU

As I wrote this message, another Now Think On This word to share, there was much happening in the hearts of men and women around the world. It seemed that particular day in September was reaching a pinnacle in the spiritual activity realm. Even the children of the seeking parents were involved, pressing in for more than their natural lives had given them.

In Israel, Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement, had begun at sundown. For the next 24 hours devout Jews, and even most of the secular/non-religious ones, would fast and seek their Living God.

In Mecca, Saudi Arabia, more than 2 million Muslims had begun to gather for the annual hajj pilgrimage to that city, believed to be their holiest site on the earth.

And in the USA, Pope Francis had landed for his several day visit to major American East Coast cities – Washington DC, New York and Philadelphia. Roman Catholics, Protestants and the mass media would be part of the enormous crowds, all expecting his appearance and words to be different from previous religious leaders.

Many Christians were looking to the skies, anticipating the rare blood moon within the week, believing this was another sign of Jesus’ soon return.

The nations seek after God - some out of tradition, others from duty, and yet more because they believe their spiritual lives will be changed, along with their afterlife.

In Scriptures, we find others who were seeking after God. Specifically in Acts 17:22-31, Luke wrote of Paul’s proclamation to those in Athens searching for a Higher Being. He writes, “Sha’ul stood up in the Council meeting and said, “Men of Athens: I see how very religious you are in every way! For as I was walking around, looking at your shrines, I even found an altar which had been inscribed, ‘To An Unknown God.’ So, the one whom you are already worshipping in ignorance — this is the one I proclaim to you.

“The God who made the universe and everything in it, and who is Lord of heaven and earth, does not live in man-made temples; nor is he served by human hands, as if he lacked something; since it is he himself who gives life and breath and everything to everyone.

“From one man he made every nation living on the entire surface of the earth, and he fixed the limits of their territories and the periods when they would flourish. God did this so that people would look for him and perhaps reach out and find him although in fact, he is not far from each one of us, ‘for in him we live and move and exist.’ Indeed, as some of the poets among you have said, ‘We are actually his children.’ So, since we are children of God, we shouldn’t suppose that God’s essence resembles gold, silver or stone shaped by human technique and imagination.

“In the past, God overlooked such ignorance; but now he is commanding all people everywhere to turn to him from their sins. For he has set a Day when he will judge the inhabited world, and do it justly, by means of a man whom he has designated. And he has given public proof of it by resurrecting this man from the dead.” (Complete Jewish Bible)

The Man whom Paul (Sha’ul) spoke about had very recently risen from the dead. This Man, the Jew Yeshua, was alive, and was now Himself seeking the hearts of men.  Through this proclamation of His Gospel (Good News), to those who would hear, repent and come in obedience to salvation, many would find that which they had been longing for, the Messiah of the world. He had come the first time.

There is only One Name by which man can be saved, and His name is Jesus Christ, Yeshua HaMashiach, the Messiah and the One who has paid the price for all mankind on the tree (cross), to bring everlasting life to those who would believe.

My heart and prayer is that for each and every one who seeks God, you will find Him whom your heart longs for. As the Bible says, He is not far from each one of us. He will let you find Him – for the first time or for your daily walk of faith.

“…so that they should seek the Lord, in the hope that they might grope for Him and find Him, though He is not far from each one of us.” Acts 17:27 NKJV
