Don’t Cancel Your Trip to Israel - Calev Myers

Don’t Cancel Your Trip to Israel

Many people have asked me about the current wave of violence between Jews and Muslims in Israel. Why is it taking place? Is it the beginning of a new intifada (uprising)? Could it have been avoided? Does it create a risk for tourists visiting Israel?

First of all, it certainly could have been avoided. These attacks are not random, spontaneous acts of frustrated people. They are the result of many years of systematic Palestinian education in UNRWA schools, funded by the US and the EU, through which a whole generation of Palestinians have been taught that the very existence of the state of Israel in Dar al Islam (house of Islam) is illegitimate, and the only way to destroy it is by concerted violent jihad (holy war).

There is a constant explosive mixture of radical Islamic indoctrination fermenting under the surface and held back only by the security squads of Mahmoud Abbas. All that it takes for the explosion to be ignited is a green light, a “head-nod”, from President Abbas and his dictatorial regime.

The West should take this into account, stop funding incitement to violence and start pre-conditioning its massive funding on serious Palestinian education system reforms.

Each intifada always has more to do with inner Palestinian politics than the Israeli-Arab conflict. When Hamas is losing popularity in the streets, it starts firing missiles at Israel. When the PLO loses popularity, it unleashes an intifada in the West Bank and Jerusalem. Unfortunately, killing Jews is an easy way to gain political capital in the Palestinian street; it may be easy but it comes with a terrible price. Before the first intifada, a Palestinian from Gaza could easily travel to work at a bank or hospital in Beer Sheva and an Arab from the West Bank could freely drive with his family to a beach in Tel-Aviv on any weekend. With each wave of Palestinian violence, the movement, the commerce and the livelihood of Palestinians has been decreased significantly. Intifada always backfires.

Over the past few months, Mahmoud Abbas has been portrayed in the regional media as old, ineffective and illegitimate. The most widespread dialogue has been conjecture as to “who will replace Abbas?” As a very timely, carefully contemplated response, Abbas traveled to the UN a few weeks ago, stood before the world, and declared that the Palestinians “cannot continue to be bound” by their political and security agreements with Israel. Most of the world did not understand what was novel about this declaration. The Palestinian street, however, understood quite well: the limitations have been lifted. You are free to release your fomenting rage without fear of retribution from the PLO security forces.

Following the Abbas UN declaration, attacks on Israeli citizens ensued, mutual acts of violence followed, and Abbas has yet to publicly condemn any of it. His silence is deafening. Several of Abbas’s government leaders have actually vocally supported the civil unrest. PLO Executive Committee Member, Mahmoud Ismail, declared that killing Israelis is a “national duty” and PLO Central Committee Member, Jamal Muhasim, stated that killing Israel settlers is “legitimate and legal”.

In light of this, we should applaud Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu’s explicit condemnation of recent Jewish retributive attacks on Muslims and his call for the Israeli Police to crack down on all acts of violence from both communities.

This recent escalation could come and go quickly like rain clouds which blow over the horizon, but it could also develop into a longer term drawn-out intifada. It is too early to say. What we know is: when it is all over, many will try to ascertain which side “won” in this conflict. Such calculations are asinine. When human life is lost, nobody wins. The destruction of any life, Israeli or Palestinian, is the destruction of a whole world. In order to support Israel, we should not harm Palestinians and in order to support Palestinians, we should not harm Israel. We should advocate for the improvement and protection of life and livelihood for both peoples on both sides of the conflict. As mentioned above, I believe this starts with education reform.

For those who may be planning to travel to Israel in the near future, I would not change my travel plans. These are very targeted criminal acts being carried out against specific Israeli Jews and Muslim Arabs, in specific geographic locations. None of the attacks have been directed against tourists. Tourism is equally important to the economies of the Jews and the Muslims. Furthermore, the international media tends to exaggerate the tensions. Regardless of current events, Israel continues to be safer and have a lower crime rate on average than the safest major city in the United States.

I look forward to seeing you in our beautiful city.

Israel Summit Ends with Praise, Pledge to Prayer

Israel Summit Ends with Praise, Pledge to Prayer

LOVELAND, Colorado -- Participants in the first gathering of FIRM, the Fellowship of Israel-Related Ministries, closed their three-day summit Friday evening with the launching of a new website and an affirmation of founder Wayne Hilsden's call to pledge 1 percent of his day -- 14 minutes daily -- to pray for Israel and the Jewish people and for God's purposes to be fulfilled on earth.
One of the youngest members of FIRM, 22 year-old Michael Mistretta, introduced the closing speaker, 80 year-old Pastor Jack Hayford, founding pastor of Church on the Way in Van Nuys, Calif., who told several hundred people in attendance that the future of Israel is one of the central spiritual battles of our generation.
The leaders placed special emphasis on the younger generation throughout the summit, and on the last day, hundreds of high school students heard an exhortation from Calev Myers, an Israeli human rights attorney and activist dedicated to fighting anti-Semitism around the world and spotlighting injustices against Palestinians by their own people.
Hilsden, co-founding pastor of King of Kings Community, stressed the importance of humility for Christians in approaching the global conflict over Israel.  One of FIRM's central scriptures is from the apostle Paul's letter to Ephesians:  "Remember that at one time, you were separated from the Messiah, alienated from the commonwealth of Israel and strangers to the covenants of promise, having no hope and without God in the world.  But now in the Messiah Jesus -- you who were once far off have been brought near by the blood of the Messiah."  (Ephesians 2:12-13).
Hilsden says the group will expand its outreach through the website and other projects, but that the success of the collective effort to bless Israel and the other peoples of the Middle East in a time of growing persecution is prayer from individual Christians and Messianic believers on every continent.

    Occupation Lawyer
    Years active 2004-present

Calev Myers is the founder of the Jerusalem Institute of Justice (JIJ), a human rights group in Israel. He finished a degree at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and joined the Israel Bar Association as a licensed lawyer after having immigrated to Israel from the United States in 1992. He founded JIJ in 2004 as non-profit organization that takes on cases of religious persecution, and advances freedom of conscience and civil justice in Israel.

Myers also owns and manages the Jerusalem City Center branch as a partner at Yehuda Raveh & Co. law offices. The law firm was established in 1940 by Gideon Hausner who served as Attorney-General of Israel and member of Knesset in 1965, 1969, 1974 and 1977. Myers has been published in the International Law Review and currently works in the fields of corporate and intellectual property law, charity law, and civil rights law.

When Christian humanitarian aid organizations were charged a 15.5% value added tax (VAT) on relief shipments for Israeli victims of the 2006 Lebanon War, Myers negotiated a one-time $3,090,000 VAT discount, from the Ministry of Finance, on a $20,000,000 shipment. In 2008, Myers was asked to act as spokesperson for the family of Ami Ortiz, a 15-year-old who was critically wounded by a bomb that had been planted by Yaakov Teitel in hopes of killing Ami's father, David Ortiz. After hundreds of New Testaments were publicly burned by Orthodox Jews in Israel in 2010,Army Radio interviewed Myers, who called for all involved parties to be prosecuted.

In 2011, Myers founded a caucus with Likud Member of Knesset Danny Danon to combat anti-Semitism internationally. Myers described the caucus's goals as being "to empower Israel's friends around the world to fight anti-Semitism everywhere it exists".

Myers addressed the European Parliament in 2012 challenging Europe's funding the Palestinian Authority while overlooking human rights violations and was the key-note speaker at the opening event of Palestinian Human Rights Week in Toronto, Canada in April 2013. At the event, Myers stated, "We try to look at the issues from a human rights perspective. When you put on your human rights lenses you see what’s really happening and who the true abusers of human rights of the Palestinians are. It’s not primarily soldiers at checkpoints, the Israeli government [or Jewish] settlers in the disputed territories: it’s the Palestinian Authority itself and the nations surrounding Israel.”

Myers has been published in the Justice Magazine of the International Association of Jewish Lawyers and Jurists, and serves as one of their Representatives before the UN in Geneva and New York.
    From their website:
THE STATE OF ISRAEL will be open for Jewish immigration and for the Ingathering of the Exiles; it will foster the development of the country for the benefit of all its inhabitants; it will be based on freedom, justice and peace as envisaged by the prophets of Israel; it will ensure complete equality of social and political rights to all its inhabitants irrespective of religion, race or sex; it will guarantee freedom of religion, conscience, language, education and culture; it will safeguard the Holy Places of all religions; and it will be faithful to the principles of the Charter of the United Nations. – Israel's Declaration of Independence
In order to ensure the fulfillment of the vision of our nation's forefathers, our small team of advocates from the Jerusalem Institute of Justice (JIJ) has tirelessly challenged discriminatory governmental practices within Israel's democratic system. We have handled over 500 cases, during the first eight years of our existence, including twenty victorious petitions before the Supreme Court.
Within Israel, we pursue freedom of religion, freedom of conscience, and advocate for members of minority religions, as well as citizens lacking any religious affiliation. We have also done extensive work on behalf of victims of human trafficking, advanced affirmative action for Ethiopian new immigrants, and provided representation to Lone Soldiers who have been abandoned by their ultra-Orthodox families for choosing to serve in the IDF.
Our passion for freedom, truth and moral clarity has driven us to pursue justice, not only within Israel, but also on behalf of Israel. While most human rights organizations superficially point to Israel's occupation of the disputed territories as the foremost abuse of human rights in our region, we espouse a more thorough and unbiased view on the matter. We have drafted and disseminated extensive reports on the human rights abuses of the Palestinian Authority (PA) in the West Bank and the Hamas government in Gaza.
Our work in this regard has taken us before the UN and the European Parliament, as well as esteemed academic venues on several continents. We continue to call upon the international community to monitor and require accountability for the billions of dollars of aid donated to the PA per annum; aid which rather than building the infrastructure for an independent, democratic Palestinian administration, has thus far been deposited into the bank accounts of corrupt leaders, financed militant terrorist activities, and funded education of the next generation in values of hatred, violence, racism and anti-Semitism.
We believe that the only legitimate solution for the Arab-Israeli dispute is one that will enhance freedom, democracy, human rights and rule of law for all peoples on each side of the controversy. A resolution based on any other grounds simply cannot provide lasting peace.
This has not been an easy battle, or one that has been met with much applause. At times, we have found courage in the words of Mother Teresa, "we, the unwilling, led by the unknowing, are doing the impossible for the ungrateful. We have done so much, for so long, with so little, we are now qualified to do anything with nothing".
Thank you for taking the time to visit our website and review our activities. We ask you to partner with us, and by so doing, to strengthen our efforts to advance justice both in Israel and for Israel.

Justice, justice, you shall pursue, that you may live and possess the land which the Lord your God is giving you. – Deuteronomy 16:20

Israeli legal groups want to provide the 'Whole Story' - Israel Today

Israeli legal groups want to provide the 'Whole Story'

Wednesday, October 02, 2013 |  Israel Today Staff
The Jerusalem Institute of Justice (JIJ) has launched a new campaign titled “The Whole Story Project” in an effort to help international observers see past the bias of the mainstream media and understand what is really going on in Israel.
In a series of short videos created for YouTube, Calev Myers, a Messianic Jewish human rights lawyer and founder of the JIJ, will not only explain, but show how Israel is “the only bastion of democracy, of human rights, of freedom in the Middle East,” an aspect of the conflict too often left out of media reports.
Through these video, Myers and his team hope to influence the global public, which in turn will vote more responsible leaders into power, because “what happens in Israel will have a profound effect on the world.”
Watch the introductory video below:

It is also worth watching the JIJ’s previous short video on “Understanding UN Bias Against Israel”:
