The Book of Genesis (32:4-22) describes Jacob’s three-prong strategy as he prepares to meet his estranged brother, Esau, after many years. Prayer to God, a peace-offering to Esau, and finally military preparations should all else fail. Today the Israel Defense Forces continues to follow Jacob’s guidelines, acting only in operations of self-defense after all options for peace have failed.
