Holocaust Remembrance Day - Israel Parliament Meeting at Auschwitz

Israel Parliament Meeting at Auschwitz

Today, January 27, 2014, the largest ever delegation of Knesset members are convening abroad, on the grounds of the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camps, together with Holocaust survivors, for a historic gathering on combating anti-Semitism.
This symbolic parliament session is very significant — meeting just a few meters away from the gas chambers where millions of Jews were once murdered.

The event is being held on International Holocaust Remembrance Day, a memorial day in honor of the six million Jews who perished during the Holocaust. 2014 will also mark the 69th anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz-Birkenau camps by the Soviet Army and Allied troops.

Half of the Israeli parliament are with the Israeli delegation, and it is being led by coalition chairman MK Yariv Levin and the opposition leader, MK Isaac Herzog. Each member of the Knesset will be accompanying a Holocaust survivor. In addition, the delegation will include senior representatives of the Israel Defense Forces, both Chief Rabbis of the State of Israel and former Chief Rabbi Meir Lau (a Holocaust survivor himself).

The primary goal of the mission is to highlight the importance of remembering the Holocaust and to “have a conversation with elected officials from around the world emphasizing that action needs to be taken to ensure that nothing of the kind ever happens again, anywhere in the world, especially as far as Jews are concerned.”

In addition to the Knesset session at Auschwitz, the delegation will do a symbolic walk through the concentration camp. The group will then participate in a 3km march to the neighboring Birkenau camp where a memorial service will then be held to mark the 70th Anniversary of the deportation of Hungarian Jews to Auschwitz-Birkenau.

According to the Foundation for the Benefit of Holocaust Victims in Israel, at least one survivor in Israel dies every hour. It is therefore so important for in the Israeli government to remind the world that the annihilation of Jews must never happen again.

Famed Italian tenor, Andrea Bocelli, plans to attend a historic memorial event at the site of the Auschwitz-Birkenau Nazi concentration camp later this month, a source with knowledge of the matter revealed to The Algemeiner.
The event, which will take place on International Holocaust Remembrance Day on January 27th, will also be attended by more than half of Israel’s Knesset, other international politicians, and Holocaust survivors. The Knesset members will host a discussion on anti-Semitism at the memorial site.
“This event has the potential not just to be a memorial but to develop into a symposium for elected officials to discuss how the Holocaust and anything like it can never happen again,” Knesset Speaker Yuli Edelstein told The Jerusalem Post in September, when the event was first announced.
“The symbolism of the majority of the Knesset coming and standing with the survivors in a place in which 69 years ago they didn’t imagine they’d live another day is so strong,” said Jonny Daniels, founder of From the Depths, the organization planning the event.
Bocelli has expressed his appreciation for Israel in recent interviews.
In 2012, when asked by the UK’s Daily Telegraph about his best holiday, he responded: “A country that has really resonated with me and I was really impressed with was Israel. I found that the whole country had a very special atmosphere. I was there to perform but it was one of the few places that I’ve visited over the years that I had some free time to explore, and I was hugely impressed by all the religious history there.”
Writing for the UK’s Daily Mail last year, he said, “Places in the world I have especially enjoyed include Israel, which left a very powerful impression on me.”
Bocelli last visited Israel in 2011, performing at Masada in collaboration with members of the Rishon Lezion Symphonic Orchestra.
It is unclear of Bocelli plans to sing at the event, or just to attend as a guest.

Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper issued a statement marking Holocaust Remembrance Day on Sunday, and vowed to fight all forms of intolerance, discrimination and anti-Semitism.

"On Yom HaShoah (Holocaust Remembrance Day), Canadians stand together to remember the countless innocent people, including nearly six million Jewish men, women and children who suffered and died at the hands of the Nazis during the Holocaust," Harper said.

"As we mark the liberation of the first Nazi concentration camp in Buchenwald, Germany, let us also pay tribute to all those brave souls who fought with the Jewish resistance during this dark period, and let us renew our own commitment to continue their fight against all forms of intolerance, discrimination and anti-Semitism," he continued.

Harper described the atrocities of the Holocaust as a betrayal of "the fundamental value of human dignity" which must never be forgotten or repeated.

Israel's official state ceremony marked the start of Remembrance day on Sunday evening.

Speaking to The Jerusalem Post at Yad Vashem prior to the ceremony, former British prime minister and Quartet Middle East envoy Tony Blair said "We’ve got to be incredibly vigilant” in dealing with European anti-Semitism.

Blair stressed that when an incident occurs, “it should be given proper publicity.”

Asked how to handle the recent uptick in anti-Semitic attacks in Europe, Blair replied that “when it happens we’ve got to expose it and what happens, unfortunately too often,” when such incidents do not receive proper publicity.

“I know the British government takes it very seriously and we should be putting a lot of pressure on this because you should not tolerate what is intolerable,” Blair said.
