In Charlottesville, the Local Jewish Community Presses On - ALAN ZIMMERMAN REFORMJUDAISM.ORG

In Charlottesville, the Local Jewish Community Presses On

At Congregation Beth Israel in Charlottesville, VA, we are deeply grateful for the support and prayers of the broader Reform Jewish community. Our thoughts and prayers are with the families of Heather Heyer and the two Virginia State Police officers, H. Jay Cullen and Berke Bates, who lost their lives on Saturday, and with the many people injured in the attack who are still recovering.
The loss of life far outweighs any fear or concern felt by me or the Jewish community during the past several weeks as we braced for this Nazi rally – but the effects of both will each linger.
On Saturday morning, I stood outside our synagogue with the armed security guard we hired after the police department refused to provide us with an officer during morning services. (Even the police department’s limited promise of an observer near our building was not kept — and note, we did not ask for protection of our property, only our people as they worshipped).
Forty congregants were inside. Here’s what I witnessed during that time.
For half an hour, three men dressed in fatigues and armed with semi-automatic rifles stood across the street from the temple. Had they tried to enter, I don’t know what I could have done to stop them, but I couldn’t take my eyes off them, either. Perhaps the presence of our armed guard deterred them. Perhaps their presence was just a coincidence, and I’m paranoid. I don’t know.
Several times, parades of Nazis passed our building, shouting, “There's the synagogue!” followed by chants of “Seig Heil” and other anti-Semitic language. Some carried flags with swastikas and other Nazi symbols.
A guy in a white polo shirt walked by the synagogue a few times, arousing suspicion. Was he casing the building, or trying to build up courage to commit a crime? We didn’t know. Later, I noticed that the man accused in the automobile terror attack wore the same polo shirt as the man who kept walking by our synagogue; apparently it’s the uniform of a white supremacist group. Even now, that gives me a chill.
When services ended, my heart broke as I advised congregants that it would be safer to leave the temple through the back entrance rather than through the front, and to please go in groups.
This is 2017 in the United States of America.
Later that day, I arrived on the scene shortly after the car plowed into peaceful protesters. It was a horrific and bloody scene.
Soon, we learned that Nazi websites had posted a call to burn our synagogue. I sat with one of our rabbis and wondered whether we should go back to the temple to protect the building. What could I do if I were there? Fortunately, it was just talk – but we had already deemed such an attack within the realm of possibilities, taking the precautionary step of removing our Torahs, including a Holocaust scroll, from the premises.
Again: This is in America in 2017.
At the end of the day, we felt we had no choice but to cancel a Havdalah service at a congregant’s home. It had been announced on a public Facebook page, and we were fearful that Nazi elements might be aware of the event. Again, we sought police protection – not a battalion of police, just a single officer – but we were told simply to cancel the event.
Local police faced an unprecedented problem that day, but make no mistake, Jews are a specific target of these groups, and despite nods of understanding from officials about our concerns – and despite the fact that the mayor himself is Jewish – we were left to our own devices. The fact that a calamity did not befall the Jewish community of Charlottesville on Saturday was not thanks to our politicians, our police, or even our own efforts, but to the grace of God.
And yet, in the midst of all that, other moments stand out for me, as well.
John Aguilar, a 30-year Navy veteran, took it upon himself to stand watch over the synagogue through services Friday evening and Saturday, along with our armed guard. He just felt he should.
We experienced wonderful turnout for services both Friday night and Saturday morning to observe Shabbat, including several non-Jews who said they came to show solidarity (though a number of congregants, particularly elderly ones, told me they were afraid to come to synagogue).
A frail, elderly woman approached me Saturday morning as I stood on the steps in front of our sanctuary, crying, to tell me that while she was Roman Catholic, she wanted to stay and watch over the synagogue with us. At one point, she asked, “Why do they hate you?” I had no answer to the question we’ve been asking ourselves for thousands of years.
At least a dozen complete strangers stopped by as we stood in front the synagogue Saturday to ask if we wanted them to stand with us.
And our wonderful rabbis stood on the front lines with other Charlottesville clergy, opposing hate.
Most attention now is, and for the foreseeable future will be, focused on the deaths and injuries that occurred, and that is as it should be. But for most people, before the week is out, Saturday’s events will degenerate into the all-to-familiar bickering that is part of the larger, ongoing political narrative. The media will move on — and all it will take is some new outrageous Trump tweet to change the subject.
We will get back to normal, also. We have two B'nai mitzvah coming up, and soon, Rosh HaShanah and Yom Kippur will be upon us, too.
After the nation moves on, we will be left to pick up the pieces. Fortunately, this is a very strong and capable Jewish community, blessed to be led by incredible rabbis. We have committed lay leadership, and a congregation committed to Jewish values and our synagogue. In some ways, we will come out of it stronger – just as tempering metals make them tougher and harder.

"Wave of Healing Hitting the East and West Coast" - Brian Britton

"Wave of Healing Hitting the East and West Coast"
Brian Britton, Williamsburg, VA
The Elijah List

As we are in a time of great acceleration, I sense an urgent call on this word for the Body of Christ to engage with Heaven, to pray and move in Him, to see this come to pass. These are great days of revival, open heavens and Kingdom advancement. As things seem to be getting darker, His great light is shining brighter!

Acts 4:29-30 "...and grant to Your servants that with all boldness they may speak Your word, by stretching out Your hand to heal, and that signs and wonders may be done through the name of Your holy servant Jesus."
Over the last 13 years, while ministering as a missionary revivalist in the nations and leading revival churches here in the States, I have been blessed to see God heal thousands of people and draw many unto Himself as the Good News of Jesus is preached. At times in Africa and Asia, we have seen God heal over 1000 people in a single meeting. But gone are the days where these reports only come from the mission field.

In the last 8 years here at home, we have seen many miracles in our churches in Virginia and in other places as we have seen on the foreign mission field. From people being healed of everything from cancer to headaches and more, we have been blessed to see God move in this generation like never before! I say all this to glorify God, but also to say that recently I have been overwhelmed by the great truth that God is about to do even more than we can imagine for His glory.

A Wave of Healing From Coast to Coast

Recently, while ministering in Switzerland, I had a powerful vision of a move of God intensifying on the East Coast of the United States of America. In the vision I saw a huge wave hitting the coast, and instead of diminishing when it hit, it began to slowly swell and grow in size. It was made clear to me that this was a wave of healing that will be a catalyst for revival and outpouring in the land. I saw key areas along the coast being impacted first, but over time all of the East Coast was engulfed by the wave. (Photo via Wikimedia)

The states that were highlighted to me were Massachusetts, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, Virginia, North Carolina, Georgia and Florida. In some of these I saw specific cities and even people I knew who were a part. For instance not mentioned above was New York but I specifically saw New York City being key, especially Long Island and Manhattan. Other cities of note were Boston, Harrisburg, Richmond, Raleigh, and Atlanta.

This wave will surpass previous moves of healing in the country, as it is not being carried out by one or even several men and women, but literally thousands of sons and daughters of the King. I saw people gathering in homes and in arenas to celebrate and witness the power of the Gospel and many were swept into the Kingdom as a result.

As I mentioned previously, instead of the wave diminishing when it hit the coast, it actually began to slowly swell and rise up over the land. At about this time I noticed a great wave already approaching from the West Coast as well, and California, Oregon and Washington were similarly engulfed. Both of these waves seemed to be moving towards each other and meeting over the center of our nation where I saw cities like Chicago, Detroit, St. Louis, Tulsa, Austin and Dallas being washed in the great tide of glory.

I felt I was being shown this to agree with the Holy Spirit and others for this to come to pass and also to encourage this generation of sons and daughters to step out with boldness and proclaim the truth of the Good News, expecting signs and wonders to follow. Freedom, healing and life will follow in the wake of the children of the King in this great hour. (Photo via Pixabay)

So this is a call to action for all who read this article: Awaken, Arise, Pray and Go in boldness believing that as you do, the Lord will surely stretch forth His hand to heal, and that signs and wonders will be done through the name of Jesus.

Prophetic Word Sparks Purity and Power Revival in Virginia - JENNIFER LECLAIRE CHARISMA NEWS

Prophetic Word Sparks Purity and Power Revival in Virginia

Watchman on the Wall, by Jennifer LeClaire
While writing The Next God: An Appeal to Heaven for Spiritual Awakening, I traveled to many cities to witness pockets of revival breaking out.
What the Holy Spirit showed me is there are many expressions of revival. Of course, they are all marked by a fervent hunger for the presence of God. One expression of revival is manifesting in Bristol, Virginia.
What started as a three-hour service with Ryan LeStrange and Jeremiah Johnson has turned into a genuine outpouring at Impact International Church there.
It all started when Johnson, pastor at Heart of the Father Ministry in Lakeland, Florida, released a prophetic word about an appointed season of transformation and revival opening up in the Tri-Cities region of Tennessee and Virginia.
"The atmosphere shifted and it became clear that this was not an ordinary meeting," says LeStrange, founder of Impact International Ministries in Bristol. "There has been a tangible move of purity and fire sweeping the nightly services."
They're calling it Awaken21: A purity and power revival. The number 21 represents a set time in which God is igniting the outpouring. It also represents holiness and completion.
LeStrange says one of the most powerful moments was when people started repenting for exalting their gifts above intimacy. The room, he says, was filled with the cry of hunger.
"Young people have been flooding the altar crying out for more and being set free," LeStrange says. "People are committing their lives to the Lord and restoring their first love."
Johnson points to God's healing power in the meetings, noting a powerful miracle when LeStrange prayed for deaf ears to be opened.
"A man who was watching online from Ireland was instantly healed and his deaf ear began to hear. He reported that he had been deaf in that ear since childhood. Many others have been healed of various infirmities," Johnson says.
"On Saturday night healing power swept the meeting and a woman who had driven in from North Carolina received a powerful miracle in her back. She had surgical rods in her back and was suddenly able to bend and move. After the meeting she took her brace off free from pain and restored movement."
I have worked with both Ryan and Jeremiah. They are both sowing the seeds of revival everywhere they go as we enter into what I believe is a Third Great Awakening. Sure, it's growing darker in America, but I believe the next move of God is emerging even now. (Click here to listen to Ryan and me talk about the next move of God.)
I see the remnant rising. I see people from different denominations praying together for awakening. I see more desperation than I've ever seen in the body of Christ. Despite all the doom and gloom I see around me, I have never been more hopeful. We're not there yet, but I believe a spirit of repentance is coming over the church and those who embrace it will help usher in the next great move of God.
