'Passion, Persistence and Perseverance' - Now Think On This by Steve Martin

Passion, Persistence and Perseverance
by Steve Martin

“I see everything you're doing for me. Impressive! The love and the faith, the service and persistence. Yes, very impressive! You get better at it every day.” (Revelations 2:19 THE MESSAGE)

(Note: I wrote this in Feb. 2014. Looking back it was our last Christmas with Laurie's Mom Lorraine Unzicker, who went to be with the Lord Jesus on July 31, 2014 at age 92. We are grateful we had this special time with her, until we see her again!)

Ben Martin, Lorraine Unzicker and Laurie Martin - Christmas 2013 in Peru, IL

“If the passion isn’t strong enough, the perseverance won’t last enough.”

That thought came as I was meditating on…or rather silently fretting about…the 14 hour drive ahead of us. Heading out on the long road ahead, in the middle of winter, through the Carolina mountains, to the plains of the Midwest, wasn’t what I wanted to be doing these next short days. But that’s where Laurie, my son Ben and I were headed.

We were spending Christmas with the family in Illinois, after not getting up there for the past five years, for this special holiday. I was keeping my word made to Laurie the previous spring, when the daffodils were blooming, the robins were singing, and life all around was fresh and abounding.

No longer did I desire to get out on the open road, as I did years ago, and drive 12-14 hours straight. It just didn’t appeal to me anymore, and I was dreading the long two days behind the Hyundai Elantra wheel. Not only that, but leaving on a Saturday, driving for two days, and having to start the return back on Christmas Day afternoon, to be in the office for one day, Friday, because my boss wanted me back for an upcoming event…

Well, I just wasn’t rejoicing and singing songs of merry.

“If the passion isn’t strong enough, the perseverance won’t last enough.”

When what I knew was the Holy Spirit speaking this word right about then to me, my attitude began to change. It was important to keep my word. It was indeed going to be special to be with Laurie’s mom Lorraine Unzicker, now 92, and her two sisters (Linda and Judy) and their families. That was what my heart and head were to focus on right now. Not the physical cost of getting there.

When faced with a situation that you know will take some stamina and persistence, we need to dig deep into our soul and count on the Lord to give grace and provision for the task ahead. Often we are given the choice to take the easy road, stay in our comfy chair wasting time in front of the TV, or move forward with what we know will count for eternity, by doing that which we are called to do. A simple choice, at least it should be. Too many times we take the easy path, which will be easier on our flesh.

The Apostle Paul had a mighty mission he had been apprehended for. The passion burning in his heart kept him going when it would have been easy to stop, count the harvest already accredited to his account, and call it done. But he didn’t.

“I've been flogged five times with the Jews' thirty-nine lashes, beaten by Roman rods three times, pummeled with rocks once. I've been shipwrecked three times, and immersed in the open sea for a night and a day. In hard traveling year in and year out, I've had to ford rivers, fend off robbers, struggle with friends, struggle with foes. I've been at risk in the city, at risk in the country, endangered by desert sun and sea storm, and betrayed by those I thought were my brothers. I've known drudgery and hard labor, many a long and lonely night without sleep, many a missed meal, blasted by the cold, naked to the weather.

And that's not the half of it, when you throw in the daily pressures and anxieties of all the churches.

When someone gets to the end of his rope, I feel the desperation in my bones. When someone is duped into sin, an angry fire burns in my gut.” (2 Cor. 11:24-29 THE MESSAGE)

In no way am I comparing a 14 hour drive to what the apostle Paul had to endure to fulfill his calling at times. We want to think so, though.

In your ongoing walk with the Lord Jesus, consider that price which He paid for us. Receive encouragement from Him, from the other examples given to us throughout Scripture, from Genesis to Revelation. Read about the martyrs who have gone before us through the centuries, giving their lives for the eternal passion instilled within them. Then we can find that which is necessary to continue pressing on to the mark, to win the prize, to reach the final destination.

The reward will be great.

Now think on this.

"Pass the Test - Ahava Love Letter (Steve Martin)

             “Pass the Test”

“Therefore, since we have so great a cloud of witnesses surrounding us, let us also lay aside every encumbrance and the sin which so easily entangles us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of faith, who for the joy set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.

For consider Him who has endured such hostility by sinners against Himself, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart.” Hebrews 12:1-3, NASU

Dear family of friends,

Sometimes one wonders (me too) how long situations are going to last before a resolution comes. It seems like we each have a few going on at one time or another.

During those times of waiting for the finale’, which may take a day, week, month or even years, the Lord does a work in our hearts. He's looking for something. He's checking us out to see how much resolve we have; how long will we endure; will love or bitterness win out? Will persistence through the grim and grind prove we are willing to be a worthy fulfillment of His plans and purposes in our lives, and those around us? Every good parent does this with his/her child. It makes them strong. It causes them to grow up into the mature men and women we need.

Employment situations, family relationships, church congregations, government policies, the world in general for that matter - each offer opportunities to test our hearts, to show us what we are made of in the very depths of them.

Your heart has ached at times, just like others who want to please the Lord, while pushing forward through the head winds that come at you and I more often than we’d like. But we keep pushing on. We keep our eyes fixed on Jesus (Yeshua), Who has the Holy Spirit (Ruach HaKodesh) walking with us on this planet.

At the end of the journey we have the promise, we have His trustworthy commitment that we will hear God the Father say, both to you and I, “Well done, good and faithful servant.”

I have passed a few tests. I have failed a lot. So I keep taking them, because ultimately I want to be one of those "standing" when He gives out the rewards. My eyes are fixed on Him, and He will provide the grace to endure what He has directed for us during our journeys.

Our faith, our grounded and yet heavenly trust in Him, will be the fuel burning in our spirits on this unpaved, often uncharted road we travel.

Pass the test. Complete the grade you are currently in. Move on to the bigger challenges that come with the bigger rewards.

Ahava to my family of friends,

Steve & Laurie Martin

The Promise: One Man's Journey to See God's Word Revealed (My first book now available)

Promise: One Man's Journey to See God's Word Revealed

Book Description

September 6, 2013

Throughout our lives, God keeps His hand on our shoulders and nudges us on to more than what we could ever realize. I am excited to share how He did this with me, and am confident it will be a story you’ll be able to relate to.

As I unveil my story, think back to those times when you knew there was some thing more but you just couldn’t put your finger on it. You knew deep down that life wasn’t what the TV sitcoms portrayed it to be. In our souls there is the hope, the cry for more, that someday questions will be answered and promises fulfilled if we just kept plugging away at what we know to do.

In The Promise I share my 40 year journey with you, and show you that dreams do come true. Though Peter Pan isn’t real, the Lord, the One Who created us, certainly is, and He has a plan in place for each one of us. When you are done reading this story, my prayer is that you too will know more of that good plan and His purpose for you.

“Have your delight in the Lord,
and He will give you
the desires of your heart.
Trust also in Him,
and He will do it.”

Psalm 37:3,4

Dedication

To all those who have a desire and a dream that is yet to be fulfilled, but continue to hang onto the promise the Lord has given you – I dedicate this book.

In agreement with the Bible verse that I have printed on a note card standing upright on my home computer desk, “Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up” (Galatians 6:0, NIV), I declare that He will do it.

As surely as the Lord God of Israel lives, He will bring it to pass.

We’ve Only Just Begun…

Back in the ‘70’s, when music was still decent, and you could really understand the words, a brother and a sister, the Carpenters, came out with a popular song,  We’ve Only Just Begun.  For those of us around at that time, songs like this gave us some hope, as we made our way through grade school or high school.  Deep in our souls, whether we realized it back then or not, something, or Someone, was calling after us, and songs on the radio helped draw us on.

Not sure which way to go at times, we knew something was still possible, even as our parents sought after the “Almighty Dollar”, and the Sunday service was at least a place the family, which still looked like one, went to on Sundays.  Friday night football games, followed by the sock-hop (finally realized that we had to wear socks, not our shoes, because of the gym wooden floor), gave us potential stability, after coming out of the ‘60’s and before the ‘80’s hit.

Through it all, Someone kept His hand on our shoulders, and nudged us on to more than what we would ever realize, before now.  And then…boom! The answer comes in an unexpected way.

As I unveil this story, think back to those times that you knew there was something more, but you just couldn’t put your hand on it.  You knew, deep down, that life wasn’t just what Walter Cronkite said it was every night on the CBS news, or that the faith and love shown by John Boy to Grandpa, Jim Bob, and the other twenty Waltons wasn’t just for their family.  Deep down in our souls, the hope, the cry for more, would someday be answered and fulfilled, if we just kept plugging away at what we did know.

I want you to share my journey with me, as I look back over the last forty years, and you see that dreams do come true, and that though Peter Pan isn’t real, the Lord, the One Who created us, is, and He has a plan in place for each one of us.  And when you are done reading this story, you too will know that…we’ve only just begun.
