What First-Century Christians Could Teach Us Today

Growing up in a country like America where we get to vote and influence the government, it’s difficult to imagine what it would feel like to live under an absolute monarchy. Or a tyrannical dictatorship. Or an oppressive, all-controlling regime. Yet the early followers of Jesus not only lived in such environments, but they flourished and grew. What can we learn from these early believers? What would they each us today?
First, they would teach us that no matter who leads the nation, no one can stop the gospel. And no matter what form of government we have, the church can grow and thrive.
I do imagine that these Christians would be amazed at the liberties we enjoy. (Obviously, they would be amazed by a lot of other things too.) They would likely tell us to do our best to guard these liberties.
But they would remind us to put our trust in God not in government and not to confuse patriotism with the kingdom of God.

Second, they would encourage us not to get caught up in partisan politics, a concept that would have been largely unknown to them.
You see, in the Roman Empire, there were not rival political parties, with your vote making a difference between which candidate would come into power. You did not have Democrat vs. Republican (or the equivalent). And while there were different social and philosophical factions, there was not a political divide. For the most part, the emperor was supreme.
For the early Christian, then, the divisions were more basic. There was light and darkness. There was the church and the world. There was the kingdom of God and the kingdom of Satan. There was heaven and hell. And there were saved people and lost people.
That is how these early believers saw their world, and that is how they saw their mission. Put another way, although they brought about powerful cultural change through the gospel, their focus was not on reforming the Roman Empire. Their focus was the Great Commission.
They still had to deal with the distractions of the flesh and the world, just as we do today. But partisan politics did not vie for their attention. Or consume their emotions. Or divide them as believers.
That’s why I say that they would encourage us not to get caught up in partisan politics.
Again, they might well encourage us to exploit our democratic liberties to the full and even to run for office, if some of us were called to do so. But I believe they would help us to step above the political frenzy that so dominates and divides our nation.
Third, they would remind us that the church is not a building, especially at a time like this when our church buildings are shut during the COVID-19 crisis.
In my just-released book When the World Stops, I have an entire chapter devoted to this subject, titled, “What Is Church and How Do We Do It?” And I am convinced that this is one of the major lessons we must learn during this forced lockdown: The church is not a building, and Christianity is not a spectator sport.
I would think that these first believers would be stunned to see our large church buildings and cathedrals. But it would not be because they had never seen magnificent buildings. To the contrary, those who were alive to see the second temple (which was destroyed by the Romans in A.D. 70) would have seen something far more spectacular than our largest megachurch facility. And the Romans themselves knew how to build.
It’s just that the believers met in homes back then. There was no such thing as a church building. Consequently, a greater emphasis was put on being the church more than on going to church (although they certainly emphasized the importance of meeting together).
In this context, they would remind us that the preacher is not a performer. And the body is not an audience. And, to say it again, Christianity is not a spectator sport.
This doesn’t mean they wouldn’t welcome church meetings of all sizes and buildings of all sizes. It’s just that their emphasis would be put on every member of the body being connected and activated. It would be on the priesthood of every believer.
Fourth, these early Christians would remind us of the need to rely on the power of the Spirit. While they would rejoice in the many ways the gospel can spread today, ways that would have been unimaginable to them, they would encourage us not to lean on technology. Or human personality. Or worldly techniques.
Instead they would urge us to remember the words of Jesus, who said, “But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you. And you shall be My witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth” (Acts 1:8)
It is by the power of the Spirit that they rocked their world. It is by the power of the Spirit that we can rock ours.
What other lessons do you think these first believers could teach us today?

'Dark Forces' and Jezebel's Spirit Make Their Way Onto the Political Scene - MICHAEL BROWN CHARISMA NEWS

(Photo by Sebastiaan Stam from Pexels)
Even though she spoke for just under nine minutes in last week's Democratic debate, presidential hopeful Marianne Williamson was declared the "winner" by 47% of viewers via a Drudge poll.
Why? Her words were powerful, says author and national radio host Dr. Michael Brown, especially those referring to a "dark psychic force of the collectivized hatred that this president is bringing up in this country."
"She was closer to the truth than she realized," Brown says. "Her talk of this 'dark psychic force of collectivized hatred' is right on track, only not in the way she imagines. More accurately, she should have spoken of a 'dark spiritual force,' one that I and others have referred to as Jezebel.' It is a spiritual force that is also working powerfully through the Democratic party."
Brown writes in his new book, Jezebel's War with America: The Plot to Destroy Our Country and What We Can Do to Turn the Tide, that the evil spirit of the biblical figure Jezebel who lived 3,000 years ago is alive and well today.

Released yesterday, Jezebel's War with America focuses on the fact that the spirit of the biblical figure Jezebel is at work through a fascination with witchcraft and sorcery, radical feminism coupled with the extreme pro-abortion movement, along with other spiritual and cultural forces in an attempt to destroy America. Brown's eye-opening book not only unveils a satanic plot, beginning with an all-out assault on the church, but it will equip every believer with tools to defeat the enemy in their own personal lives as well as in the nation.
"While there is certainly a rising tide of 'collectivized hatred' that the president has helped stoke, there is an ominous rise in this 'collectivized hatred' from the left as well," Brown says. "Ask yourself an honest question: Have you seen any hatred greater than the hatred expressed at the Women's Marches? Have you seen any hatred greater than the hatred expressed at the pro-abortion protests at the Kavanaugh hearings?
"That is the spirit of Jezebel, a wicked queen who died almost 3,000 years ago, the matriarch of radical feminism," Brown continues. "She—meaning a coalition of demonic forces—is behind this ominous, rising, dark, spiritual tide. According to the Bible, Jezebel was also a seductress, and today, there is an epidemic of sexual seduction through porn and the internet. No generation before ours had to deal with websites devoted to helping you find your adulterous partner. No generation before ours had to deal with elementary school children getting exposed to pornography. This, too, is Jezebel at work. She is driving this dark spiritual movement."
Let's not forget, Brown adds, that this wicked queen was a murderer, slaughtering the prophets and killing any who stood in her way. And, as a devoted idol worshiper, Jezebel was doubtless familiar with the horrific practice of sacrificing babies to these pagan deities.
"This murderous spirit lives on today in the 'Shout Your Abortion' movement, in the passing of laws that legalize abortion right up to the moment of delivery, in the defense of infanticide," Brown says. "In Jezebel's day, living, breathing babies were offered up on the altar of idolatry. Today, these precious lives are offered up on the altar of convenience and career. It is not hard to connect the dots. The same demonic forces that operated through Queen Jezebel 3,000 years ago are operating again today. The stage is being set. The conflict is upon us. Jezebel is being exposed."
Brown also points out that in the Bible, Jezebel is associated with sorcery and witchcraft.
"Is it any coincidence that, today, with the rise of radical feminism, we also see the rise of witchcraft, with some of these witches trying to put hexes on the 'patriarchy'?" Brown asks. "Is this not the spirit of Jezebel at work again? And it just a coincidence that, as of this writing, 6 out of the 10 most-read books on Amazon are Harry Potter titles? As 'innocent' as these books may be, they are still books glorifying sorcery and wizardry, with children as their target audience. And back to politics, soon after the debate, Breitbart reported that "'Witches' for Marianne Williamson Launch 'Occult Task Force." Need I say more?"

Amazon Crosses a Very Dangerous Censorship Line - MICHAEL BROWN CHARISMA NEWS

(Photo by Aliis Sinisalu on Unsplash)
With the news last week that Amazon has banned Mohammed's Koran: Why Muslims Kill for Islam, co-authored by British activist Tommy Robinson and Peter McLoughlin, Amazon has crossed a very dangerous and precarious line.
Two immediate questions come to mind. First, why ban a book critiquing Islam when a host of other books critiquing—no, harshly attacking—other religious faiths are available on Amazon? Second, why ban this book and not other books that critique Islam? Why draw the line here?
When McLoughlin, who helped expose the "grooming" crimes committed by some British Muslims, received word that the book had been removed from Amazon, he wrote, "This is the 21st-century equivalent of the Nazis taking out the books from university libraries and burning them.
"Can you think of another scholarly book on Islam that has been banned by Amazon? Mein Kampf is for sale on Amazon. As are books like the terrorist manual called The Anarchist Cookbook."
Get Spirit-filled content delivered right to your inbox! Click here to subscribe to our newsletter.
Yet Mohammed's Koran gets banned?
According to Robert Spencer, who has authored scholarly works critiquing the Koran, Robinson and McLoughlin's book "endeavors to illustrate how violent jihadists justify their actions by referring to Islamic texts and teachings—and that's all. Robinson and McLoughlin call for no violence. Their book is accurate."
Indeed, one could readily ask, if their book was banned by Amazon, why not ban Spencer's related books, such as: The Truth About Muhammad: Founder of the World's Most Intolerant Religion, or The Complete Infidel's Guide to the Koran; or The Politically Incorrect Guide to Islam (And the Crusades) or The History of Jihad: From Muhammad to ISIS? (Note that this last title, released in 2018, is currently No. 1 on Amazon under the category, "Muhammad and Islam.")
Do you see where this is going?
More disturbingly, why ban Mohammed's Koran while allowing books to be sold on Amazon like these, by Christian author Texe Marrs? Among his many books are: Holy Serpent of the Jews: The Rabbis' Secret Plan for Satan to Crush Their Enemies and Vault the Jews to Global Dominion (published in 2016); and Blood Covenant With Destiny: The Babylonian Talmud, the Jewish Kabbalah and the Power of Prophecy (published in 2018).
According to Marrs, "The Jews are on the fast track to their occult fate. They have made an agreement with hell, a covenant with death and payments on their debt to Satan must be made in accordance with that contractual agreement."
Yes, "The ultimate goal of the Jews is the annihilation of almost every Gentile man, woman, and child and the establishment of a satanic Jewish-led global dictatorship (the Jewish utopia) encompassing the planet. This goal is expressed by the Jews in their most sacred books, the Babylonian Talmud and the Kabbalah." (For the record, I'll be addressing the writings of Marrs in the revised and updated version of my book Our Hands Are Stained with Blood: The Tragic Story of the 'Church' and the Jewish People, due out in September).
I own the Kindle version of Mohammed's Koran, having purchased it in 2017. And although I haven't read all of it, I can tell you that nothing I have seen in the book comes anywhere close to Marrs's insidious attacks on the Talmud and Kabbalah.
Why are his books available while Mohammed's Koran is not?
Is it that Robinson has become a marked man? Is it because of pressure from Islamic activists? Whatever the reason, it is not good enough.
By banning this book, Amazon is opening up one of two possibilities: Either Amazon will not be consistent, thereby demonstrating extreme hypocrisy. Or Amazon will start banning many other books, leading to a very dangerous precedent.
Which books and authors will be next? And what can conservative, Bible-believers expect? Perhaps our books opposing LGBT activism or exposing the evils of abortion will be next?
Amazon has no problem publishing atheistic attacks on religion, like Richard Dawkins' best-seller The God Delusion.
In this book, Dawkins famously claimed that, "The God of the Old Testament is arguably the most unpleasant character in all fiction: jealous and proud of it; a petty, unjust, unforgiving control-freak; a vindictive, bloodthirsty ethnic cleanser; a misogynistic, homophobic, racist, infanticidal, genocidal, filicidal, pestilential, megalomaniacal, sadomasochistic, capriciously malevolent bully."
How many Bible-believers did this offend, including both Jews and Christians? How many find these words to be ugly and bigoted? Should Amazon then ban The God Delusion? And again, I found nothing in Mohammed's Koran attacking Allah with this same level of vitriol.
If Mohammed's Koran is banned, why not ban these?
To repeat: Amazon has crossed a very dangerous and precarious line, and this Bezos-owned mega-company needs to reverse course quickly, issuing an apology and reinstating the book.
Anything less than this is a cause for real concern.
If you agree—even if you are a Muslim or an atheist—I encourage you to let Amazon know.

The World Is Getting Crazier, But That's Why We Do What We Do - MICHAEL BROWN CHARISMA NEWS

If you're on the frontlines of the culture wars, it's easy to get discouraged.

If you're on the frontlines of the culture wars, it's easy to get discouraged. Why bother? Why try to bail water from a sinking ship? Why make an effort to stop, let alone reverse the irreversible? But to have that attitude is to misunderstand our role. It is at times like these we are most needed.
Think of it like a fire for a fireman. Or a critically injured patient for an emergency room doctor. This is when they spring into action.
And today, when it seems like our culture is suffering from corporate delusion, our voice of sanity and clarity and morality is all the more needed.
Just consider these recent headlines (from America and abroad):
Get Spirit-filled content delivered right to your inbox! Click here to subscribe to our newsletter.
The first article tells the unbelievable, yet true, story of Kate Scottow, who says she was "arrested in my home by three officers, with my autistic 10-year-old daughter and breastfed 20-month-old son present. I was then detained for seven hours in a cell with no sanitary products (which I said I needed) before being interviewed then later released under investigation."
What was her crime?
She explains, "I was arrested for harassment and malicious communications because I called someone out and misgendered them on Twitter."
Can you imagine this? You're home with your kids when the police come to your door, arresting you and detaining you because you identified a biological male as a male in a social media comment.
For years we have used the phrase "the diversity police" in a metaphorical sense. In the case of Kate Scottow, it was literal.
What is coming next?
The second article tells another unbelievable, yet true, story, this one from here in the States. Ironically, this time it is a feminist who is being punished, but for a similar crime.
Back in November, she tweeted, "Men are not women. How are transwomen not men? What is the difference between men and transwomen?"
As a result of daring to challenge today's transanity, she was permanently banned from Twitter. Now, with her lawyers, she is fighting back.
And for good reason. Twitter's actions are both ridiculous and unconscionable. Pushing back is the only logical choice, especially when you're defending the simple statement that "men are not women."
Whole books are now being written by feminists, some of them quite radically to the left, protesting against biological men who claim they are women and warning about "female erasure."
They have every reason to speak out.
The third article pushes credulity one step farther.
Not only is yet another library hosting a drag queen reading hour for toddlers, but this time, the drag queen goes by the name "Annie Christ."
According to the library director Tom Meyer, "There's definitely more complaints about this than any other event we've done. But the amount of support for having it is also overwhelming."
Enough said.
The fourth article blasts USA Powerlifting for banning biological males from competing against women, recognizing the unfair advantage they have. (If you're unsure about this, just look at a picture from a weightlifting event in Australia. Is there anything unusual about the "female" winner?)
Yes, USA Powerlifting is being "unscientific" for saying that a biological male who is naturally much bigger and stronger than a female, regardless of what hormones he is taking, has an unfair advantage against women. How unscientific indeed.
But let's be honest.
These are just four headlines out of 400. Or 4,000. The list could be multiplied almost to infinity.
How can we possibly think of stopping the flood, let alone turning the tide?
To repeat: This is why we are here. This is why we do what we do.
The darker it is, the more we shine the light.
The crazier it is, the more we speak the truth.
The slipperier it is, the more we stand firm.
What else can we do?
The less we stand up and speak up, the quicker we lose our own rights.
The less we raise our voices, the quicker our kids and grandkids will lose theirs.
Do we really have a choice?
But let's not take our stand with despair, as if we are Custer's army about to be slaughtered.
Not at all.
I have the firm, biblically based conviction that light is more powerful than darkness and truth than lies.
I have the firm, biblically based conviction that God's ways will triumph in the end.
I have the firm, biblically based conviction that we will reap what we sow, which means we set the course for our own future by how we live today.
It is even possible that a massive, spiritual and cultural awakening is at the door.
And since we've been warning for years that such unhinged days would be upon us, we can now shout all the more, "We told you so! And we also told you how to respond. It's time to take our stand!"
I would encourage you, then, to take these crazy times as a divine invitation to action. Come join us on the front lines today.
We reach out to all with compassion, and we resist destructive agendas with courage.
