Adopting a Hebrew Surname ✡ "Yehuda Is A Lion’s Whelp" - Israel365

Yehuda is a lion’s whelp; On prey, my son, have you grown. He crouches, lies down like a lion, Like the king of beasts—who dare rouse him?

Today's Israel Inspiration

Yesterday would have been the the 131st birthday of David Ben-Gurion, the first Prime Minister of the State of Israel. David Ben-Gurion is widely remembered for his reading of the Deceleration of Independence of the State of Israel on May 14, 1948. Ben-Gurion is an icon of modern Israeli history and is remembered as one of the founders of the modern state of Israel. Although Ben-Gurion described himself as an irreligious person, he referenced the Bible extensively in his work and is quoted as saying, "In Israel, in order to be a realist, you must believe in miracles."  Ben-Gurion was born in 1886 as David Grun. It was only in 1912 that he adopted the Hebrew name Ben-Gurion (בן-גוריון) meaning "son of a lion cub" as a sign of his commitment to the revival of the Hebrew language.  The above verse highlights one of the many places in the Bible where the word gurion appears. Ben-Gurion preached the significance of "hebraicizing" surnames and was successful in convincing other signatories of the Israeli Declaration of Independence to adopt Hebrew names with which to sign the document. Many immigrants to Israel continue to follow in Ben-Gurion's footsteps by adopting a more Hebrew or Biblical sounding name upon their arrival to Israel. Discover the Biblical origin of your name and connect to Israel, the Bible and the Hebrew language.

“A Heart Full of Deep Love for the Jewish People”

It’s great to hear from you and make new friends from all over the world. Please send me an email and let me know how you are enjoying Israel365 (don’t forget to say where you are from!).

I am a committed Orthodox Christian person and as such, I can only have a heart full of deep love for the Jewish people and the nation of Beloved Israel. God Almighty told the great patriarch Abraham that He would bless the great man and those who blessed him and He would curse those who cursed Abraham. That promise has never been retracted or abrogated in any way, shape, or form since those glorious words were first declared by God Almighty. It is my most fervent prayer and belief that our God will bless and protect Beloved Israel forevermore. It also my earnest prayer that all those who have any kind of animosity towards Beloved Israel and the Jewish people would find it in their hearts to make lasting, genuine peace with Beloved Israel. It seems that even Ishmael managed to do that because he and his younger brother Isaac were the ones who buried their beloved father Abraham when he died. --James Jones

Prayers Of Our Ancestors ✡ "May You Hear The Supplications Of Your Servant" - Israel365

May You hear the supplications of Your servant and of Your people Israel, which they shall pray in this place.

Today's Israel Inspiration

Throughout Scripture, we meet Biblical figures who prayed to the Almighty for all of their needs. Jewish tradition explains that prayer, however, is not meant to "change the mind" of the Almighty. What changes through prayer is us. By recognizing the Source of all of the blessings in our lives, we bring ourselves closer to God and elevate ourselves. This in turn brings down God's mercy upon us. Enrolling in a Biblical Hebrew course, like one offered by the the Israel Institute of Biblical Studies, will deepen your understanding of the beauty of the Bible.

What Does 'Amen' Mean in Hebrew?

We use and hear the word 'amen' so frequently in prayers and worship. Have you ever wondered about its real meaning?

The Jewish New Year: Rosh Hashana

Mentioned throughout Jewish sources, the sound of the shofar was used at various times, including at the giving of the Torah at Mount Sinai. Today, the shofar is used on the Jewish New Year, Rosh Hashanah, when that same sound has the unique power to awaken our souls to the presence of its Infinite source, and to renew a vision of the spiritual connection we are meant to build in this world.
