"For Brothers to Dwell Together" ✡ Hebrew Meaning of "Unity"

A song of ascents of David. Behold how good and how pleasant it is for brothers to dwell together!

PSALMS (133:1)

שִׁיר הַמַּעֲלוֹת לְדָוִד הִנֵּה מַה טּוֹב וּמַה נָּעִים שֶׁבֶת אַחִים גַּם יָחַד

תהילים קלג:א

sheer ha-ma-lot l'-da-vid hi-nay ma tov u-ma na-eem she-vet a-kheem gam ya-khad

Today's Israel Inspiration

The Psalmist teaches us in today's verse about the extraordinary value of "achdut" - אחדות - unity, which comes from the Hebrew word for "one" - אחד - echad. God's blessings flow down into this world when we dwell in unity with one another, as brothers. Israel's national blood bank benefits Christians, Jews and everyone living in the Holy Land. Make a virtual blood donation today to save a life.

Shabbat Shalom ✡ "Two are Better Than One"

Two are better than one, for they get a greater return for their labor. For should they fall, one can lift his friend.

ECCLESIASTES (4:9,10)

טוֹבִים הַשְּׁנַיִם מִן הָאֶחָד אֲשֶׁר יֵשׁ לָהֶם שָׂכָר טוֹב בַּעֲמָלָם -  כִּי אִם יִפֹּלוּ הָאֶחָד יָקִים אֶת חֲבֵרוֹ

Shabbat Inspiration

Today's verse from the wisdom of King Solomon urges each of us to seek out and connect with others with whom we can grow spiritually. From the word 'chaver' (friend) comes the word 'chavruta' - a study partner - a deeply traditional way of biblical learning where two people explore Jewish texts together. Connect with the Israel Bible Reading Plan and achieve all of your spiritual goals with the help of a fantastic online interactive course.

וַיִּגְדַּל הַיֶּלֶד וַתְּבִאֵהוּ לְבַת פַּרְעֹה וַיְהִי לָהּ לְבֵן וַתִּקְרָא שְׁמוֹ משֶׁה וַתֹּאמֶר כִּי מִן הַמַּיִם מְשִׁיתִהוּ

Today's Israel Inspiration

Although the Torah is relatively progressive in its attitude towards women as compared to the surrounding cultures of the time it describes (think Deborah the Judge), there aren’t many female characters in leading roles in the text. Yet here, the women who raised Moses are noted, and later in Moses’s genealogy, three women are described: Moses’s mother, Jochebed, Aaron’s wife, Elisheba, and Aaron’s daughter-in-law, whose name is not given. Why do you think these women in particular are included? What is their significance in Moses’ life? Get the answer in the new Israel Bible Reading Plan, with an exciting curriculum, personal attention, and question-answer forum.
