"When the Shofar Sounds" ✡ Hebrew Meaning of the Word "Shofar"

All you inhabitants of the world and dwellers of the earth - you will see when the banner is hoisted up upon the mountains, and when the shofar sounds you will hear!

ISAIAH (18:3)

kol yosh-vay tay-vayl v'shokh-nay a-retz ki-n'so-a nays ha-reem tir-u v'khit-ko-asho-far tish-ma-u

Today's Israel Inspiration

Here is an incredible lesson from the holy language of Hebrew. The word "shofar" comes from the word לשפר - le-sha-fayr which means "to improve." The sound of the shofar awakens us to beautify our deeds as we strive to improve ourselves. We pray for the fulfillment of today's verse when the shofar's sound will be heard throughout the Land in the final days of redemption.

Hebrew Music Monday

Sing along in Hebrew to "Justice Shall You Pursue" by Safam, based on the inspiring words of Deuteronomy 16:20and Amos 5:24, with English transliteration. Just this past Sabbath, we read these very words in the Torah portion!

The Rastafarian Messiah Guarding the Ark of the Covenant

The search for the Lost Ark of the Covenant has inspired treasure hunters and religious believers for thousands of years. However, one of the most unexpected and rarely discussed connections related to the possible secret hiding place of the holy object lies with Jamaican Rastafarians.

Today's Israel Photo

Ilan Rosen's photo of Mount Hermon, the highest summit in Israel. Because of its height, Hermon captures a great deal of precipitation in this dry part of the world and is covered by snow for most of the year - and is even home to an Israeli ski resort! The melted snow forms streams which flow into the Jordan River.

Israel Photo Trivia ✡ "The Sign of the Covenant"

And God said: "This is the sign of the covenant, which I give between Me and between you, and between every living soul that is with you, for everlasting generations."

GENESIS (9:12)

Today's Israel Inspiration

Here's a beautiful lesson from the holy language of Hebrew! The root of the word for "give" in Hebrew is "natan" נתן which is a palindrome; it reads the same backwards as forwards. The essence of giving is that what we give, we get back in some way. While many assume that their time or money will be lost forever if shared, Judaism teaches the opposite; that we stand to personally gain when we give to others. Join Meir Panim, an incredible Israel non-profit, in giving meals to hungry children and Holocaust survivors throughout the Land of Israel, and reap the blessings that will enter your life!

Unity on the Streets of Jerusalem

This video will leave you smiling and thinking of the great maxim "love thy neighbor as thyself." On the streets of Jerusalem, people 'pay it forward' and build unity through kindness.

Volunteering during a vacation is a fantastic way to get involved with the community from a perspective you might not otherwise see. Hear how one family of six pitched in to help the people of Israel!

Fabulous Grace After Meals Artwork

The Biblical verse that is used to compose this fabulous work of art is the basis for the Biblical mandate Grace After Meals. By saying a prayer after eating, we recognize the supreme blessing of having food to feed our hungry bodies.

Mom, I Saved a Life in Israel ✡ "Built up the House of Israel"

May God make the woman who is coming into your house like Rachel and Leah, both of whom built up the House of Israel.

RUTH (4:11)

Shabbat Inspiration

The Book of Ruth tells the story of the Moabite princess Ruth, who, through great self-sacrifice, finds her way to the ultimate truth of the Torah. She becomes the 'mother of royalty,' the great-grandmother of King David, and the ultimate ancestress of the Messiah who will come from this royal lineage. This Mother’s Day, show your mother you care by helping save a life in Israel and "Heart to Heart" will send a certificate telling her how much you love her and how much you love Israel. Receive a free PDF certificate that you may print and present to your mom.

Today's Israel Photo

Ilan Rosen's beautiful view from Mount Arbel in the lower Galilee. Showing the amazing history of the Land, one can find caves dating back to the Second Temple period dug into the slopes of Mount Arbel, which were hideouts for Jews who fought against the Greeks and Romans.

Israel Photo Trivia ✡ "I Raise My Eyes Upon the Mountains"

I raise my eyes upon the mountains, from where does my help come?  My help comes from the Lord, maker of heaven and earth.

PSALMS (121:1)

e-sa ay-nai el he-ha-reem may-ai-yin ya-vo ez-ree ez-ree may-im a-do-nai o-say sha-mai-yim va-a-retz

Today's Israel Inspiration

This famous chapter in Psalms asks for God to provide assistance through all of life’s trying moments, but according to Jewish mysticism, it contains a specific secret formula as well. “From where does my help come” in Hebrew is ‘from where does my עזרי come from. This is the same word used in Genesis when God creates Eve to be an עזר כנגדו/ a ‘help mate’ for Adam. Accordingly, Psalm 121 is considered to be particularly potent when praying for an appropriate spouse, as in ‘my help mate comes from the Lord.’

"Masada of the North"

Get a beautiful vantage point of Israel's northern treasure, known as "Masada of the North." Here, Jews in the times of the Second Temple led a strong defense against the mighty Romans. (Trivia spoiler alert!)

Hebrew Name Necklace

Stay connected to your biblical roots by wearing your Hebrew name proudly! Don’t know your Hebrew name? No problem! Many English names derive from Hebrew names in the Bible, and the rest have etymological or spiritual cousins in Biblical sources. Just include your English name and we’ll find the Hebrew name in the Bible that’s most closely connected to yours.

Israel Photo Trivia

Ilan Rosen's photo features a magnificent landmark in northern Israel. One look at the hump-like shape of the hill is enough to understand why it was given its name, which comes from the Hebrew word for camel/ גמל ("gamal"). Can you guess its name? Send me an email or post your answer on Facebook!
