Global Persecution Report: 'Christians Are the Most Persecuted ...and It's Accelerating' - CBN News Jennifer Wishon

Global Persecution Report: 'Christians Are the Most Persecuted ...and It's Accelerating'

WASHINGTON – Religious persecution plagues countries around the world and the problem is only getting worse. Now, an annual report by the US Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF) gives us a clear picture of the world's top offenders.
Burma, Central African Republic, China, Eritrea, Iran, Nigeria, North Korea, Pakistan, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Sudan, Syria, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan and Vietnam are where people of faith face the most aggressive and violent forms of persecution.
Gary Bauer, one of the nine commissioners on USCIRF, is particularly concerned about China's inclusion on the list because of the influence it wields.

"So here's a rising power. It's economy is growing bigger and bigger each year, its military is expanding. It's got worldwide ambitions and every place it reaches it's bringing these values of persecution along with them," he tells CBN News.
So called "tier two" countries of concern include Afghanistan, Azerbaijan, Bahrain, Cuba, Egypt, India, Indonesia, Iraq, Kazakhstan, Laos, Malaysia, and America's NATO ally Turkey.

Turkey, of course, made international headlines for holding American Pastor Andrew Brunson hostage for nearly two years before releasing him last fall.
"One of the things the commission is really focused on is not only when there are governments perpetrating violence but when governments are tolerating the perpetration of violence," USCIRF Commissioner Anurima Bhargava told CBN News after release of the report.
This report is unique in that the nine commissioners on USCIRF aren't burdened by diplomacy. Unlike many State Department accounts, these observers are free to tell it like they see it.
"We believe as a commission that no person of whatever faith they are should have to fear within their house of worship," says Commissioner Tony Perkins.
For the world's Christians, the situation is especially dire.
"Christians are the most persecuted religious group in the world and it's accelerating," says Bauer.
In its report, the commission calls on President Trump to appoint a special adviser on international religious freedom, target top offenders with sanctions, and put money toward the State Department's effort to help houses of worship protect themselves.

"Churches, which are soft targets, have become targets for terrorists and so we believe this would be a very effective role for our government to come alongside these governments to provide the training that would be a combination of police officers, the law enforcement agencies, the domestic security, along with the houses of worship to provide the security," says Perkins, who has also served on the security team at his own church.
For so many people around the world, finding religious tolerance is increasingly a matter of life and death.

Liberal Campaign to Oppose SCOTUS Pick Already Underway - Why It's Going to Be an Epic Battle - CBN News Jennifer Wishon

Liberal Campaign to Oppose SCOTUS Pick Already Underway
- Why It's Going to Be an Epic Battle

WASHINGTON – Experts have predicted the confirmation battle for the next justice of the Supreme
Court will be epic and the proof is already materializing.

Abortion activists are already preparing to mobilize against the president's pick – specifically, they're
targeting two states where they believe they can convince the Republican senators there to break ranks
and oppose the nominee.

Sens. Lisa Murkowski (R-AL) and Susan Collins (R-MA) are known for voting against their party,
and perhaps more importantly, both women are pro-choice and don't want to see Roe v. Wade

Chuck Norris' Blistering Critique of the Dems: 'Would Reject Moses if Trump Nominated Him'

The National Abortion and Reproductive Rights Action League (NARAL) has been in panic mode
ever since Justice Anthony Kennedy announced his retirement.

The group hosted a call with 10,000 activists this week to discuss the threats to abortion rights and
is using social media to galvanize its supporters.

"We know—and we know for sure—that any of Trump's list of 25 will vote to decimate our rights
under Roe v. Wade. Period," said NARAL President Ilyse Hogue.

compasses. And if they don't, then they need to examine their political futures."

"When voting on a #SCOTUS nominee, senators need to examine their values and their moral
compasses. And if they don't, then they need to examine their political futures," Hogue warned.

Indivisible, a group established in opposition to President Donald Trump after he was elected, is
also rallying its members.

It's reportedly set up a hotline to connect people with their senators and created a script for callers to
read.

Abortion isn't the only driving issue behind the protests – groups in support of Obamacare are also
gearing up for the fight.

Protect Our Care, a coalition designed to maintain the Affordable Care Act (ACA) and which was
active during the Republican drive to repeal and replace the law last year, is warning the new justice
could be a deciding vote that gets rid of protections for pre-existing conditions.

Their ad, "Emergency" airs nationwide and targets voters in Maine and Alaska.

However, there's another challenge for activists who care about abortion rights and the ACA: Three
Democratic senators may also break ranks with their party to join Republicans in voting to confirm
the president's nominee.

Sens. Joe Manchin (D-WV), Heidi Heitkamp (D-ND) and Joe Donnelly (D-IN) all voted to confirm
the president's first Supreme Court pick, Justice Neil Gorsuch, and perhaps more importantly, all three
are seeking re-election in states that President Trump won in 2016.

It's also important to note that the man or woman President Trump nominates to replace
Justice Kennedy may or may not be as predictable as everyone assumes.

Kennedy was appointed by President Ronald Reagan, who described him as a conservative –
something that's been true of Kennedy only about half of the time.

Also, Chief Justice John Roberts, appointed by President George W. Bush, has issued some rulings
on the high court that make many conservatives cringe.

Regardless, senators can expect a summer full of activist-filled lobbies, protests and threats against
their political futures as they weigh their votes for or against the next justice of the Supreme Court.

Supreme Court Rules Pro-Life Pregnancy Centers Can't Be Forced to Join 'Sales Team for Abortion' - CBN News Jennifer Wishon

CBN News spoke with Kristan Hawkins of Students for Life of America about the Supreme Court's ruling. She said, "This just shows you how important elections are in our country."

Supreme Court Rules Pro-Life Pregnancy Centers Can't Be Forced to Join 'Sales Team for Abortion'

CBN News Jennifer Wishon
WASHINGTON – Pro-life Californians scored a big win in the Supreme Court Tuesday. In a 5-4
ruling, justices decided a California law that forces pro-life pregnancy centers to advertise information
about abortion probably violates the Constitution.

The high court sent the NIFLA v. Becerra case back to a lower court where it says the pro-life
argument is likely to win on the merits of their claim that the law violates the First Amendment.

Providers

The justices struck down a second part of the law that requires unlicensed pregnancy centers to
post a sign that says as much.

"We applaud the US Supreme Court for sending a clear statement today that pro-life Americans
cannot be discriminated against and targeted by the government. The state of California's insidious
effort to prevent pregnancy care centers from helping suffering women is appalling," Penny Nance,
president of Concerned Women For America, said after the ruling.

And Students for Life of America President Kristan Hawkins says the ruling "put a halt to the
abortion industry's campaign forcing pro-life advocates to act as a sales team for abortion."

Tired of the liberal media censoring the Christian perspective from the headlines?

The court examined a 2015 California law, called the "Reproductive FACT Act," that forces more
than 100 privately funded pro-life clinics, many Christian-affiliated, to post notices on the wall
informing women that free or low-cost abortions are available.

Failure to do so results in fines or getting shut down.

Basically, the law requires pro-life Californians to advertise a practice they believe is murder.
However, critics say the case is about much more than abortion.

"This is a victory for freedom of speech, freedom of expression and for countless unborn babies.
We should be grateful for this ruling, and we ought to pray for the crucial work of pregnancy
resources centers around the country," tweeted Dr. Russell Moore, president of the Ethics and
Religious Liberty Commission of the Southern Baptist Convention.

The Supreme Court got it right today with the NIFLA case: the state cannot and must not be able
to force pro-life organizations to participate in abortion.

This is a victory for freedom of speech, freedom of expression, and for countless unborn babies.
We should be grateful for this ruling, and we ought to pray for the crucial work of pregnancy resources
centers around the country.

"Freedom-loving women should celebrate the court's wisdom here in allowing all women to serve
their fellow neighbor as their conscience dictates, free from government interference," continued
Nance.

Justice Clarence Thomas delivered the opinion of the court which was joined by Chief Justice
John Roberts, Justices Anthony Kennedy, Samuel Alito and Neil Gorsuch.

Ryan Anderson at the Heritage Foundation says Tuesday's Supreme Court ruling will likely have
a positive impact in other areas as well, tweeting: "Reading through Justice Thomas's opinion: what
he says about professional speech should help protect many other professionals, and not just on
speech about abortion, but also speech about marriage, rightly understood."

Reading through Justice Thomas's opinion: what he says about professional speech should help
protect many other professionals, and not just on speech about abortion, but also speech about
marriage, rightly understood.
Brad Dacus, president and founder of the Pacific Justice Institute, agreed.

"Today's decision from the Supreme Court is a resounding reaffirmation of free speech principles
and a sharp rebuke to the California Legislature," he said. "The so-called Reproductive FACT Act
was never about objectivity or information—it was a blatant attempt to coerce pro-life advocates
into promoting the very thing they abhor. We are gratified that the Supreme Court rewarded our
efforts over the last several years to defeat this insidious legislation."

Justice Stephen Breyer filed a dissenting opinion, which was joined by Justices Ruth Bader Ginsburg,
Sonya Sotomayor, and Elena Kagan.

This case is expected to affect similar laws in other states.

Research shows when a woman considering abortion sees her baby on an ultrasound prior to making
her decision, often at a crisis pregnancy center, 90 percent of those mothers choose life.

"I hope leaders in Sacramento will take heed and end the apparent race to appease the radical Left
with more and more intolerance," said Dr. Jerry Johnson, president, and CEO of the National
Religious Broadcasters.

Unapologetic Christian Ben Carson Says Faith 'Helps Me Serve the Nation Better' - Jennifer Wishon CBN News

Unapologetic Christian Ben Carson Says Faith 'Helps Me Serve the Nation Better'
03-12-2018
CBN News  Jennifer Wishon
WASHINGTON — Leading a Washington bureaucracy and serving as a cabinet secretary isn't how Ben Carson thought he'd spend his retirement, but the famed pediatric neurosurgeon tells CBN News he's starting to see why God placed him in this unlikely position.
"As a pediatric neurosurgeon I spent a lot of time trying to give kids a second chance – operating for hours and hours, sometimes all night," he tells CBN News.
"But then being faced with having to send them back into a horrible environment with mold and lead and vermin – all kind of stuff – it was a horrible feeling for me – now I have a chance to actually do something about that environment," he continued.
One year into the job, he says God is revealed why He placed him there by taking Carson to the Bible.
"There's a verse in the Bible, Proverbs 29:18, that says, 'without a vision the people perish,' and I look around and see a lot of people who just are not thriving," Secretary Carson said.
Connecting Needs With Resources
That verse sparked the birth of EnVision Centers: community hubs connecting people's needs with resources that can help.
They bring together public, private and faith-based groups already providing the services needed.
The centers are designed to lead people to self-sufficiency through education and wellness while offering support along the way.
Ending the Cycle of Dependency
Carson is working to end the cycle of generations who have known nothing but living on government assistance.
"We have to provide a mechanism whereby they can climb the ladder of opportunity," he said.
As secretary, Carson has felt the belt tightening conservatives demand of the Trump administration.
The White House proposes cutting HUD's budget by nearly nine billion dollars next year.
"Would I rather have more money? Yes," he said with a laugh. "I could do more, no question about it."
However, his concerns about the national debt and his desire to make the agency operate more efficiently – like a business – encourage him to rise to the challenge.
"Our new definition of success is not how many people we get in these programs, but how many people we get out of them in a self-sufficient, powerful way so that they become a driving force right here in our own country," he said.
The conservative found himself in an embarrassing situation when he was forced to cancel an order for an expensive dining room suite for his office, once it was revealed it would cost taxpayers $31,000.
In a statement Carson said "no one was more surprised" than him.
He's also caught grief for daring to study the Bible and exercise his Christian faith as a member of President Trump's cabinet.
He attends the weekly cabinet Bible study led by Ralph Drollinger of Capitol Ministries.
No Apologies for His Faith
An atheist group sued HUD to get information about the study and how Carson exercises his faith in public life.
Unapologetic, Carson responded on social media, writing, "It is my faith that helps me serve the nation even better."
"We have to have a foundation for who we are," he told CBN News. "If you're going to have free exercise of it – it doesn't mean you only get to talk about it in church because sitting in the pews of a church and keeping things contained there is not going to help feed the hungry, clothe the naked or take care of the imprisoned or do any of the things that we actually need to do so your faith has to be a living component of everything that you do," he said.
He also wrote that Americans have to resist attacks on our spirituality at all costs
"We can't allow ourselves to be just marginalized," he said.
"You know, those who impose the political correctness agenda, you know, they are winning. They're having their way, they're changing our society away from what it used to be and that frightens me," he continued.
He says America needs to do a better job of developing its people and he understands the responsibility he's been given.
"You know, housing is an important foundation for the development of an individual and having that security is so important."

Atheist Group Targets Ben Carson over 'Secretive' White House Cabinet Bible Study - CBN News Jennifer Wishon

Atheist Group Targets Ben Carson over 'Secretive' White House Cabinet Bible Study
01-23-2018
CBN News Jennifer Wishon
WASHINGTON – The weekly Bible study attended by members of President Donald Trump's Cabinet is once again under attack, this time from an atheist group.
The Freedom From Religion Foundation (FFRF) and Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington (CREW) is suing the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), led by Secretary Ben Carson.
The group has issued Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests to agencies led by Cabinet secretaries who attend the Bible study to see if government resources are being used or if agency staffers feel "coerced into organizing or even participating in the religious event," according to a press release.
No staff members attend the Bible studies, it's for cabinet secretaries only.
FFRF and CREW sued HUD when it failed to waive fees for its FOIA requests.
In July, CBN News broke the news that a number of Cabinet secretaries are meeting weekly to study the Bible and pray together.

President Trump asked Ben Carson to lead his Cabinet in a public prayer in December of 2017.
Since then, the leader of the Bible study, Capitol Ministries founder Ralph Drollinger, has faced a firestorm of personal attacks – despite the fact he's been leading Bible studies for members of the U.S. House and Senate for years.
FFRF claims it's trying to get to the bottom of the "secretive" Bible study, along with any correspondence between Cabinet secretaries and Drollinger.
Drollinger  responded on Facebook, saying, "Rather than sue, the FFRF can simply go to www.capmin.org and check out copies of the Bible studies I write and teach the Cabinet, Senate and House members every week. There's nothing secret to this – and all related Bible study expenses are paid by Capitol Ministries, a 501(c)3 organization."
Cabinet secretaries who attend the Capitol Ministries Bible Study include Attorney General Jeff Sessions, CIA Director Mike Pompeo, Education Secretary Betsy DeVos, HUD Secretary Ben Carson and Energy Secretary Rick Perry.
These officials have long been on FFRF's radar. The group objected to their confirmations due to their "inability to keep their personal religion separate from their public office."
An attorney for FFRF tells CBN News that HUD did provide responses to its FOIA requests, but denied requests to waive their FOIA fees. The agency determined the records were not in the public interest or related to HUD operations or activities.
HUD FOIA fee waivers "are limited to situations in which a requester can show that disclosure of the requested information is in the public interests because it is likely to contribute significantly to public understanding of the operations and activities of the government," according to the agency website.
FFRF and CREW have also filed FOIA requests seeking information about the amount of time Secretary Carson's wife and son spend with him while he's working.
Capitol Ministries has founded Bible studies in a majority of state capitols across the country, the U.S. House and Senate and the Cabinet. It's also started Bible studies in a number of international capitols and is beginning a project to launch studies among local leaders in communities across the country.

Pence Praises 'the Miracle of Israel,' Pledging to Open US Embassy in Jerusalem in 2019 - CBN News Jennifer Wishon

Pence Praises 'the Miracle of Israel,' Pledging to Open US Embassy in Jerusalem in 2019
01-22-2018
CBN News Jennifer Wishon
In a warmly received speech, Vice President Mike Pence told members of Israel's Knesset the United States embassy will open in Jerusalem "before the end of next year."
"By finally recognizing Jerusalem as Israel's capital, the United States has chosen fact over fiction, and fact is the only true foundation for a just and lasting peace," Pence told members.
In a wide-ranging speech the vice president called on Palestinians to return to the negotiating table, delivered a message of friendship to the people of Iran and celebrated long-awaited aid being delivered to persecuted Christians.
"For the first time we are providing direct support to Christian and religious minorities as they rebuild their communities after years of repression and war."
To Palestinians he said, "Peace can only come through dialogue."
Arab members of the Knesset boycotted his speech.
"We recognize that peace will require compromise, but you can be confident the one thing the United States of America will never compromise is the safety and security of Israel. Any peace agreement must preserve Israel's ability to defend itself by itself," he continued.
The vice president celebrated U.S. and allied victories against ISIS and made a bold promise.

"The United States of America will never allow Iran to acquire a nuclear weapon," he said to applause.
"The Iran nuclear deal is a disaster," he said, repeating President Trump's promise that the U.S. will withdraw from the deal unless it's fixed in the coming months.
He also delivered a message to the people if Iran.
"We are your friends," he said. "And the day is coming when you will be free from the evil regime that suffocates your dreams and buries your hopes. We are with you, and when your day of liberations finally comes, and come it will, the friendship between our peoples will blossom once again."
And Pence praised religious freedom in Israel. "I believe that all who cherish freedom, and seek a brighter future, should case their eyes to Israel and marvel at what they behold," he said.
"The miracle of Israel is an inspiration to the world and the United States of America is proud to stand with Israel and her people as allies and as cherished friends," he concluded.
