Heartbeat Protection or Born Alive Protection? House to Vote on Pro-Life Legislation This Week
01-15-2018
CBN News Mark Martin
The U.S. House of Representatives has the opportunity to pass a pro-life bill this Friday, on the day of the March for Life, but which one will it be?
H.R. 490, the Heartbeat Protection Act of 2017, bans the abortion of a baby when a heartbeat is detected.
Fetal heartbeats start at 21 days, and around six weeks into pregnancy they can usually be measured, according to LifeSiteNews
"It's the most protective incremental bill in existence," said one of its organizers, Janet Porter, the president of Faith2Action.
H.R. 4712, the Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act, makes it a crime if a health care practitioner lets the baby die or actively kills the infant after a botched abortion. It also gives mothers the right to sue.
"Whether by neglect or intentional means, the killing of a baby who has been born alive is abhorrent," David Christensen, vice president of government affairs for Family Research Council, told CBN News. "With Republicans in control of both Congress and the White House, it is well past time to pass Born Alive Abortion Survivors Act."
House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., announced last week the House will vote on the Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act, which is sponsored by Rep. Marsha Blackburn, R-Tenn. Blackburn is also a cosponsor of the Heartbeat bill.
"This bill states simply that if a baby is born after a failed abortion attempt, he or she should be given the same medical care as a baby born any other way," McCarthy said in a statement.
"However, doctors who fail to provide medical care to newborns will be held criminally accountable," he continued. "There is absolutely no ambiguity here. This is about protecting babies who are born and alive, and nobody should be against that."
But in a news release from Faith2Action, the organization speaks out against McCarthy's plan, saying the Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act "won't prevent even one abortion."
"Congress has a choice to make, but will they choose life?" asked Porter in the news release. "They can provide real protection for babies whose beating hearts can be heard, or turn their backs on the babies and the pro-lifers who elected them, and choose, instead, to pass the bill which won't prevent a single abortion."
"Their bill would merely tell the abortionist, 'You better make sure you kill the child in your first attempt, because you won't be allowed to finish him off,'" Porter continued. "I have an idea - how about we protect the child from the abortion in the first place?"
Rep. Steve King, R-Iowa, is the sponsor of the Heartbeat Protection Act, but he's also a cosponsor of the Born-Alive bill. He's pushing for a vote on the Heartbeat bill.
"I know if I have to answer to God which one He'll tell me I need to do," said King, according to LifeSiteNews. "He'll say, 'Save the babies. Don't worry about people's feelings; save the babies.'"
The Heartbeat Protection Act has 169 cosponsors. The Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act has 94 cosponsors.
The March for Life is this Friday, January 19. The peaceful demonstration protesting abortion is held every year around the anniversary of Roe v. Wade, the U.S. Supreme Court case which legalized abortion.

Scholars long have wondered if the site in Jerusalem's Church of the Holy Sepulchre is indeed the tomb of Jesus Christ as identified by the Romans about 1,700 years ago.
As first reported by National Geographic, scientific test results given to the magazine appear to back up the claims that the remains of a limestone cave enshrined in the church are part of the tomb where Jesus' body was believed to have been placed.
"It's corroborating what the historical accounts are telling us," Kristin Romey, archaeology editor for National Geographic, told CBN News.
"Around 325-326 A.D., Constantine sends his delegation to the Holy Land to find the site associated with the life and death of Jesus," she explained. "According to the historical accounts, they're asking around, and they're saying... 'Where was the tomb of Jesus Christ?'"
"And the locals point to this Roman temple; they tear down the Roman temple; lo and behold, underneath it is a rock-cut tomb," Romey continued.
Historical accounts show the tomb was found and enshrined around 326.
National Geographic reports that scientists sampled mortar located between the tomb's original limestone surface and a marble slab on top of it that dates to around A.D. 345.
Prior to these recent tests, the oldest architectural evidence discovered in and around the complex of the tomb dated to the time of the Crusades, around 1,000 years ago.
"But now, scientists can confirm that it is indeed the site identified as the burial place of Christ 17 centuries ago," a National Geographic news release states.
"We have a good amount of a limestone cave with a very typical kind of layout of what we call the burial bench that is still preserved within the walls of the Edicule [the shrine surrounding the tomb]," Romey told CBN News.
"I just remember being in that tomb and just kind of being really overwhelmed because this is one of the holiest, if not, the holiest site for the world's largest religion... and to kind of be able to... see it in its original state and realize that this is a rock that people have fought and died for, for centuries," she shared.
You can read more about the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in the December issue of National Geographic magazine or tune in to the National Geographic documentary, "The Secrets of Christ's Tomb: Explorer Special," premiering Sunday, Dec. 3 at 9/8c.

Was Solomon a Republican? News Magazine Attacks Rubio's Bible Tweets - CBN News Mark Martin, Abigail Robertson

Was Solomon a Republican? News Magazine Attacks Rubio's
Bible Tweets

07-11-2017 CBN News Mark Martin,
Senator Marco Rubio likes to tweet Bible verses almost every day, but one news organization is accusing him of playing politics with the Holy Scriptures.
A recent article in Politico Magazine says Rubio is "tweeting the most Republican part of the Bible" -- Proverbs.
"Some of the statements in Proverbs look strikingly similar to those made by modern-day conservative policymakers," Joel S. Baden wrote for the magazine.
Baden goes on to write that Proverbs "generally deals with questions of how to live a righteous life."
"For example: Just this past July 5, Rubio tweeted, 'They will die from lack of discipline, lost because of their great folly. Proverbs 5:23,'" Baden continued.
In response, the Florida senator tweeted, "Proverbs is the Republican part of the Bible?I don't think Solomon had yet joined the GOP when he wrote the first 29 chapters of Proverbs."
Evangelist Franklin Graham came to the defense of Rubio, writing on Facebook, "God's Word is filled with wisdom — and it's neither Republican nor Democrat."
CBN Chaplain Joel Palser agrees with Graham's statement about God's Word.
"Probably the greatest theologian of the 20th century -- he's been called that -- Karl Barth... said it was timeless truth, and so the idea that it would somehow be owned by one party or another was ludicrous," he told CBN News.
"This is ageless, timeless -- applicable to every culture and time," Palser continued.
Rubio has received criticism of his biblical tweets in the past. For example, Leah McElrath, writer for liberal website Shareblue, called the tweets "unsettling," to which The Washington Post blogger Jennifer Rubin responded, "Either he was hacked or he's totally lost it."
Esquire politics blogger Charles Pierce called the tweets "oddly terrifying."
Many on Twitter, however, have come to Sen. Rubio's defense, saying they appreciate the Bible verses that have thousands of likes and retweets.
When asked on "Fox & Friends" what he thinks of some of the negative responses his tweets received, Rubio replied, "If people don't like the Bible and they don't like the Gospel, they don't have to follow me on Twitter I suppose."
The Florida lawmaker says he tries to read the Bible every day, and he will continue to post Scriptural tweets, "especially if there's something in there that I think just spoke to me, and I want to share with people on Twitter."

Pro-life Victory in Iowa, New Law Bans Most Abortions after 20 Weeks

CBN News Mark Martin
The pro-life community in Iowa is celebrating a victory as Gov. Terry Branstad, R-Iowa, signed into law a bill which bans most abortions after 20 weeks of pregnancy.
Under the law, which went into effect on Friday, women seeking an abortion have access to more information including adoption information, an ultrasound, and the opportunity to listen to the heartbeat of the baby, according to The Family Leader, a non-profit pro-life organization in Iowa.
However, the Iowa Supreme Court on Tuesday upheld a temporary injunction against part of the law that requires a 72-hour waiting period for a woman seeking an abortion. The injunction is in place while the issue is sent back to the Polk County District Court for a hearing, according to The Gazette, an Iowa newspaper.
In Our Hands: The Battle for Jerusalem. Get Tickets
"This is another step in the legal process regarding the 72-hour waiting period," Ben Hammes, spokesman for Branstad, said Tuesday, according to The Gazette
"The governor and lieutenant governor fully believe this protection will ultimately be upheld... and are proud of the pro-life policies enacted this (legislative) session, including the 72-hour waiting period being challenged and the ban on abortions after 20 weeks, which is not being challenged," Hammes continued.
After the law passed, the president of The Family Leader, Bob Vander Plaats, wrote a celebratory email.
"The diligent work of many Iowans, the unprecedented unity of the Coalition of Pro-Life Leaders, and the message of #ShesABaby had a major impact in moving the Iowa Legislature this year to pass more significant pro-life legislation than at any time since Roe v. Wade," he wrote.
Here's a glance at the #ShesABaby video:
"So today is a good day. But we pray this is just the first step on the way to changing hearts and minds and to defending all life, from the moment of conception to natural death," Vander Plaats continued.
The ACLU and Planned Parenthood were pleased the court upheld the injunction, saying the waiting period results in a "medically unnecessary" second appointment, The Gazette reported.
"Critically important, this means that currently women scheduled to have abortion procedures will be able to receive care as scheduled," Rita Bettis, ACLU of Iowa legal director, said in a statement.
"This is essential. We know that in (the) less than only two hours the law was in effect on Friday, its harms were severely felt by Iowa women with abortion procedures scheduled," she continued.

Kirk Cameron's Call to American Christians: 'This Could Be Our Red Sea Moment' - CBN News Mark Martin

Kirk Cameron's Call to American Christians: 'This Could Be Our Red Sea Moment'

CBN News Mark Martin

Soon movie theaters around the country will host a time of worship and prayer as part of the live event, "Revive Us 2016."Actor and producer Kirk Cameron is behind the interactive gathering Tuesday, Oct. 18.

"Hear me loud and clear: There has never been a more exciting time to be a Christian in America. This could be our finest hour!" Cameron exclaimed in a trailer for the event.
"Like David running toward Goliath, or Moses and the Israelites backed up against the Red Sea with Pharaoh and the army bearing down," he continued. "Then God splits the waters! The giant is defeated!"
"This could be our 'Red Sea' moment in our story, where it's darkest just before the dawn, and God splits the waters, and we walk right through! If we have eyes to see," he emphasized.
In addition to worship and prayer, "Revive Us" will also feature a live question and answer time when participants will learn how to "transform this nation from the inside out, and the bottom all the way up to the top," Cameron explained.
In addition to Cameron, speakers during the two-hour event include former presidential candidate Dr. Ben Carson, New York Times bestselling author Eric Metaxas, pastor and author Francis Chan, and author and speaker Jennifer Rothschild, among others.
The sponsor of "Revive Us" is MyFaithVotes, a non-partisan organization that seeks to motivate Christians to vote. Organizers encourage interested participants to check theater listings for start times in your area.

By God's Grace: Surviving 9/11 from the 81st Floor - CBN News Mark Martin

By God's Grace: Surviving 9/11 from the 81st Floor
09-10-2016
CBN News Mark Martin

NEW YORK, N.Y. - September 11 is a time to remember the thousands of victims who died in the 2001 terrorist attacks. It's also a day to offer thanks for those who miraculously survived.
Jean and Dan Potter live a peaceful life in a quiet, suburban town in New York. It's a stark contrast to 15 years ago, when the couple was living in a Manhattan apartment just a few blocks from the World Trade Center.

Jean worked on the 81st floor of the first tower hit on the morning of 9/11.
Messages Amidst Chaos
"All of a sudden, this massive explosion rocked the building, and we literally swayed from side to side," Jean told CBN News. "And what first came to me is, 'This is not your time. We are with you. Your brother is with you.' I lost my brother in 1999."
Jean believes it was the voice of God -- loud and clear -- a message in the midst of chaos.
"You're thinking, 'Is this building going to fall? And I'm up 81 flights. How am I getting out of here?'" she explained.
Jean made it to the staircase as the floor became engulfed in flames.
"My heart was palpitating a mile a minute as I was going down the staircase," she recounted. "And what also came to me is, 'You and Dan will be blessed with a beautiful life. You will go north.'"
"And I saw like green trees. This is all while this is happening, and I'm in a very nervous state, but the messages were coming in," she said.
Jean believes God was reassuring her and prodding her to keep moving down the staircase.
Monumental Loss
"I would say in the 20s, we start seeing firemen, which gave us all a sense of relief," she continued about her trip down the flights of stairs. "One of whom was Vinny Giammona, who was my husband's lieutenant at Ladder 5, and I grabbed his arm."
"I said, 'Vinny be safe,' and I will never forget the look on his face that day," Jean recalled. "It would have been his 40th birthday, and he left behind a wife and four children, four little girls who are now grown. But I will never forget the look on his face."
Lt. Vinny Giammona was one of 343 New York firefighters who died that dark day. Jean's husband, Dan, a firefighter at the time, knew 60 of them.
When the terrorists struck, he was on Staten Island but quickly raced to Manhattan to make sure Jean was safe, not knowing that she made it out of the North Tower before it collapsed.
It wasn't until he was a block or two away that he realized the magnitude of the situation.
"There's different-sized body parts," Dan recalled. "There's big pieces, and there's small pieces, and it's all over the place."
Dan arrived at ground zero to help and had to take cover when the South Tower collapsed -- and later, the North Tower.
"It sounded like a freight train, maybe a hundred times more, and you just figure with that amount of noise, and you know it's coming down around you. It's just a matter of time," Dan told CBN News.
Debris and concrete pelted Dan, but he says God kept him alive, and "the big hit" never came.
Praying for Help
Covered in ash, the battered firefighter refused to give up his search for his wife and went back to their apartment.
Dan pounded on the door, but no one answered. It was then he thought that he had lost Jean. The overwhelmed firefighter then left the building and sat on a nearby bench and prayed.

It was at that moment that an Associated Press photographer snapped a photo of him, a photo that would be seen around the world.
"I'm praying to Jesus, praying for clarity...  'What do You want me to do?  What should I do?'" Dan explained in reference to the photo.
Dan believes Jesus directed him to go back to the apartment. It was there the phone rang.
His father was crying and called to check on Dan. He also told Dan where Jean was, and Dan was on his way.
"I saw her standing there, and she's all upset, and she looked at me kind of wide-eyed, 'What are you doing here?'  Like that," Dan said.
"In he walks in his bunker gear, covered, and his eyes were blood red," Jean said. "There was just blood in his eyes, and I said, 'Where were you?'"
"He said, 'You don't want to know,' and we hugged. It was just unbelievable," she recalled. "We are so grateful for what Jesus has done in our life."
All Is Grace
Jean chronicles the couple's amazing story of survival in the book, By the Grace of God, A 9/11 Survivor's Story of Love, Hope, and Healing.
"He was with all of us that day, and I don't want people to think that we were so special because we were saved," Jean said. "I mean it wasn't our time, and He was with those who were passing over, and it's just a great privilege to speak about Him."
Life has been tough at times following 9/11. The Potters have dealt with post-traumatic stress disorder, and Dan had to retire as a firefighter because of the injuries he suffered on Sept. 11, 2001.
Yet, in spite of the attacks and the difficulties that have followed, the faith of Jean and Dan remains strong. They hope those who read and hear their story will also trust in God.
"God is a loving God," Jean shared. "If you turn over your pain to Him, He will pull you through it. He will heal your heart."
"I trust Him implicitly, and I give Him my life with that...'Use me for Your glory, and whatever I can do for You,'" Dan said, praying at the same time.
After living in Pennsylvania for a season, Dan and Jean are back in New York, enjoying life in a small town.
"Once again, Jesus brought us to a new place of blessing," Jean wrote to CBN News. "We are finally home, and it feels wonderful."
Dan has done some emergency planning for residents there, and Jean is writing again.
She's writing about another example of the Lord's faithfulness during a time of tragedy. Jean's mother passed away in 2016. She survived surgery, but died 17 days later.
"(The Holy) Spirit guided me once again through the most awful, painful days of my life," she shared with CBN News. "At every turn, every moment I was guided with every decision. It was unbelievable."
