10 Reasons We Keep Seeing Established Churches Failing

JOSEPH MATTERA  CHARISMA NEWS
Where I live, dozens of large old church buildings that used to hold thriving congregations strewn along a major avenue in Brooklyn, New York. Some have been torn down and developed, while others are supported by social programs and/or rentals from other congregations. As I ponder this, I have come to the conclusion that there are 10 primary reasons established churches eventually fail.
1. They are not intergenerational.
Many of the churches in my community were at one time ethnic churches that have failed to pass down their faith to their children. When we first moved into this community we noticed that the average age of the believers in these churches was probably over 60 years of age. Consequently, there are many large congregations populated primarily with older people, and the concern of this article is whether these churches will exist in two decades.
2. They refuse to adapt to the changing demographics.
Many churches refuse to reach beyond the culture and predominant ethnic makeup of their congregation. It is the job of the lead pastor and elders to continually analyze the changing demographics of their community so they can stay ahead of the curve. I once warned a group of ethnic pastors that they would not have a church in 10 years if they did not adopt their strategies to the rapid gentrification taking place in their community. In other words, in order to reach certain people groups, a church has to focus on developed leaders representing that group and eventually give them a prominent role in decision-making and public ministry.
3. They use old methodologies.
The outreach strategies and methods of ministry in some churches are the same today as they were 40 years ago. The way we do evangelism, dress, speak and relate to our congregation has to be relevant without compromising the gospel. In the same way we are called to exegete Scripture, we are called to exegete our communities if we are going to continue to thrive.
4. They lost the zeal of its founding members.
Many established churches start with great passion and vision in their founding and move to merely consolidating, maintaining and administrating their vision in the next generation. Every mainline Protestant, Catholic and Orthodox denomination was in its beginning a thriving apostolic movement (read the book of Acts along with church history). It is the challenge of every established church to generationally pass on the torch of its original vision and zeal so that their love for Christ doesn't dissipate. Established churches that lose their vision and zeal eventually go from power to programs, revival to routines and community transformation to perpetuating mere church traditions.
5. They fail in their succession plan.
Truly, there is no success without a successor. Established churches that pick the wrong lead pastor to succeed the original apostolic visionary risk losing everything they built. Succession is tricky and often messy and hard to map out since every local church has a different culture, context and community. This is why succession planning needs to be done with much prayer, fasting and inside and outside consultation along with checks and balances. In most cases (there are always exceptions), the best successor is a spiritual son of the congregation who already has within them the DNA and vision of the house.
6. The core leaders lost their oneness.
Satan's No. 1 plan to thwart the vision of a local church is to sow seeds of discord, disunity and division in the ranks of the elders and leaders of a congregation. Churches that fail to maintain biblical oneness among their key leadership will have a rocky road ahead due to the intense spiritual warfare and complexities every church has to navigate through. Only a strong, unified core team will continue to move forward and perpetuate the church's vision. Leaders have to keep first things first and learn to overlook petty differences for the sake of kingdom advancement.
7. They succumb to the values of secular culture.
Many established denominational and independent churches in the past several hundred years have gradually gone down the slippery slope of secular accommodation. In order to be relevant and/or to be accepted by the surrounding community, whole church movements and denominations have accepted cultural norms that are antithetical to biblical values and ethics. When churches allow culture to inform their ethics and values instead of Scripture, they lose their distinction from the world and begin to decline. All historic Protestant denominations that have embraced liberal theological constructs are rapidly losing members and dying off.
The only churches that are continuing to grow worldwide are evangelical churches that are biblically based. Jesus said that if the salt has lost its saltiness, it is good for nothing but to be trampled under the feet of men (see Matt. 5:13). Churches that cease to reflect His light fail to be salty and risk being closed down by none other than the Lord Jesus Christ (Rev. 2:5).
8. There is no provision for a lack of vision.
Proverbs 29:18 teaches us that without a vision, the people become discouraged (or perish depending on your translation). When there is no longer any compelling vision in an established church, there will not be enough volunteers motivated to serve in the ministry (read Ps. 110:3) and the finances will rapidly drop. Truly, God only gives provision for that which reflects His Vision.
9. There was no long-term financial solution.
If at all possible, established churches that own their building should attempt to utilize their facilities in ways that can help financially support their ministry. Whether it is developing their property or renting space to another entity, if at all possible, creating an income stream enables a church to function even when their tithes and offerings drop (sometimes because of the weather, or other times because of a crisis in leadership or a church split). Creating a long-term financial base is a wise move to compensate for the vicissitudes of the life of a church.
10. They lost their prophetic edge.
Established churches who fail to maintain consistent corporate prayer and fasting eventually lose their prophetic edge and operate according to fleshly wisdom. This results in them missing divine opportunities, kairos moments and presumptuously making decisions that result in a loss of momentum, key people and kingdom advancement. When lead pastors, elders and core members are too busy to spend quality time seeking God together, they will miss what the Spirit is saying to the church (Rev. 2:7) and are on the road to failure.
My prayer is that every church planted by God will last for generations and be effective until Jesus returns for His bride.

Changing My Heart - Now Think On This by Steve Martin

Changing My Heart

Now Think On This
Steve Martin

“My heart is throbbing, my strength is gone, and the light in my eyes has left me.” (Psalm 38:11, Complete Jewish Bible)

Back in the day, 2001 to be exact, the contemporary Christian group named 4HIM came out with their 9th album, entitled “Walk On” (WORD Music Group). When the 8th song on the CD, “Who You Are”, played on the car CD player as I drove home from work these 16 years later, I could feel the Holy Spirit’s refreshing come. I hit the repeat button. Even now, He was touching my spirit, changing my heart once again.

The lyrics speak of the Lord constantly changing our hearts (video link and full lyrics are below). As for me, that is a good thing. This past year I had felt that my heart was growing weary, a bit colder than before, with the constant battle going on that surrounds us. Church meetings were becoming routine; days at the accounting office were hard to get through; situations happened that just made life less than expected or desired. It was not a good thing, as I saw it.

Now I know there are seasons of the soul, as I and others have written about over the years. In the dead of winter, you feel just like that. Dead to the world and even in your spiritual life. You may wonder what is the purpose of reading the Bible, praying, or having fellowship with other believers. You just let the days and months pass by, hopefully soon enough.

Then your spiritual spring and summer come. They can occur at the same time as it is in the natural, but not necessarily. This is when you can sense your spirit coming alive again, as hope is renewed, joy returns, and you get your vision from Him back.

For without vision, we perish. Or as The Message puts it, in Proverbs 29:18, “If people can't see what God is doing, they stumble all over themselves; but when they attend to what he reveals, they are most blessed.”

We all need refreshing for our weary souls. We need a “battery charge”, as we used to hear in conference messages. We certainly need the Holy Spirit to renew our vision, to bring that encouragement desperately desired at several points in our walk with the Lord Jesus.

Constantly changing our hearts is what the Lord wants to do daily in us. He longs to have us renewed, refreshed, and revisited with the first love, the one we had for Him at the start of our journey. Yes, even for those of us in the older generation, living in the later decades of our natural life.

“Come Lord Jesus” we ask today. We will give thanks and praise for Your faithfulness.

Who You Are      LISTEN HEAR
When I see the sun
Coming up in the sky
When I see the stars
In the still of the night
Then I, I see who You are

When I feel the breath of
The wind in my face
I rest in the warmth
Of a Father's embrace
Then I, I feel You Are

And who You are
Is all I'll ever want to be
Take my life
Make what You will of me
'Cause You're constantly changing my heart
Leading me out of the dark
Bringing me closer to who You are

I'm ready to run
And I'm ready to dance
Live every moment
Leave nothing to chance
'Cause I, I know who You are

I consider the Cross
And the price that You paid
I know that You live
'Cause the stone's rolled away
Oh I, I love who You are

And who You are
Is all I'll ever want to be
Take my life
Make what You will of me
'Cause You're constantly changing my heart
Leading me out of the dark
Bringing me closer to who You are
'Cause You're constantly changing my heart
Leading me out of the dark
And You're bringing me closer to who You are

Could This Be Drowning out the Holy Spirit's Voice in Your Life? - BEN WOODWARD CHARISMA MAGAZINE

Spirit-Led Woman

Over the years, I spent a lot of time flying from place to place to do my job. One of the things you quickly acquire when you fly is noise canceling headphones. The background noise on a plane can drive you crazy. The constant noise makes it especially hard to hear if you are trying to watch a movie or listen to music. The joy that comes from flipping that little switch is remarkable. All of a sudden, your world becomes quieter and you can hear things clearly.
The science behind noise-canceling headphones is actually pretty interesting. Small microphones in each ear of your headphones pick up the background noise, reverse the phase, and then add the phase shifted noise to your headphone mix. Because sound is a waveform, the background noise and the phase shifted noise cancel each other out. You flip a switch and the background noise is gone. If two waves of the same size but opposite polarity hit each other at the same time, the peak of one wave will cancel out the valley of the other wave.
For someone who spends more than enough time in a plane, a set of noise canceling headphones can be a lifesaver. But what happens when you leave the plane? Is it possible to get noise canceling headphones for regular life?
You see, we live in a world of constant noise. It's not just physical noise either, it's also emotional noise and spiritual noise. Physical noise shows up in the form of media, entertainment, life chaos and sometimes airplane seats. Emotional noise comes in the form of stress, anxiety or the weight of expectations in your life. Spiritual noise shows up in the form of oppression or negativity. All that noise adds up in your life and makes it incredibly difficult to hear the voices that actually matter.
Some of this noise is self-imposed. At times, we are intentionally drowning out noise in our life. We self-medicate through any number of means—entertainment, substance abuse, work. Some of it is just the nature of the lives we live. Every day we are subjected to thousands of advertisements through the internet, television, billboards, street signs and many other sources. All that information is processed by our brains, even if only subconsciously.
No matter what it is, that noise makes it very difficult to hear the things that matter. But what if you could flip a switch and shut out all that noise? What if there was a noise canceling option for all the physical, emotional and spiritual noise in your life? What if you knew that at any point in time, you could get clear direction and clear answers, no matter what the situation?
If you are a follower of Jesus, a born-again Christian, then you have access to the world's greatest leader. That access is not found by going to a church building or talking to your pastor or priest, it's found by listening to the leader who dwells within you.
"To them God would make known what is the glorious riches of this mystery among the nations. It is Christ in you, the hope of glory" (Col. 1:27, MEV).
"But if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead lives in you, He who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit that lives in you" (Rom. 8:11, MEV).
We have God dwelling in us! That's a pretty remarkable realization. What makes it more amazing is that the spirit of God that dwells in us was a request from Jesus to His Father.
"The Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, for it does not see Him, neither does it know Him. But you know Him, for He lives with you, and will be in you" (John 14:17, MEV).
If this is true, why do our lives seem to be so lacking the ability to hear His voice? Why do so many stumble around as though they don't know what to do? The problem is that all that other noise is blocking our ability to hear from the greatest leader we have available, the leader within. Because we can't hear His voice, the decisions we make lack wisdom and spiritual discernment. When you lack vision and wisdom, you end up reacting to circumstances instead of being led by faith.
The writer of the Book of Proverbs, one of the most remarkable books written on wisdom in history, speaks directly to what happens when we lack vision.
"Where there is no vision, the people perish; but happy is he who keeps the teaching" (Prov. 29:18, MEV).
When we don't have the ability to see the thing God is trying to get us to see, we go astray. We try our own way. We stumble around hoping for the best but never achieve it. A man named Eugene Peterson wrote a wonderful paraphrase version of that verse that says this:

"If people can't see what God is doing, they stumble all over themselves; But when they attend to what he reveals, they are most blessed" (Prov. 29:18, MSG).
If we can't see what God is doing, we will end up stumbling over ourselves. If we can't hear what God is saying, we will end up wandering in the wilderness hoping that we are headed in the right direction but never knowing if we are. Our lack of seeing and lack of hearing is not because of a lack of availability on God's part. God promised us a helper that would be with us forever. He promised a counselor that would teach us all things. He promised us a guide that would lead us into truth.
It is when we attend to what God reveals that we are most blessed. If we are going to attend to what God reveals, then we need to find a way to hear what He is saying. We need to find a way to flip on the noise canceling headphones for our lives and begin to listen. Because He is speaking.
God has given us the gift of His Holy Spirit who dwells inside of us. But due to the overwhelming amount of noise we encounter on a daily basis, we have great difficulty hearing Him. But, what if you knew that you could have access to the world's greatest leader at any point of time in your day? Well, you can. All you have to do is quiet the noise and listen. Next week, I will give you the 4 questions I use in my life to quiet the noise and listen to the leader within.
