What to Do When You Doubt God's Plan for Your Life - KENNETH REID CHARISMA NEWS

Doubting God is a crucial part of our faith. (danymena88/Pixabay.com)

What to Do When You Doubt God's Plan for Your Life

KENNETH REID  CHARISMA NEWS
Have you ever doubted God and His plan for your life?
Ever since I was about 5 years old and asked my parents, "Where did God come from?" asking questions has played an important role in my faith. I think that's the case for a lot of us. And ever since our parents answered with the most spiritual sounding version of "I honestly don't know" that they could come up with, uncertainty has been a big part of our faith too.
Questions are how we explore truth. And uncertainty is often just a reality that we all have to live with. But doubting God is different. Doubt is what happens when you ask a question and the answer doesn't satisfy, clearly define or measure up to your expectations. Doubt makes a lot of us feel very uncomfortable.
It makes those of us who tend to not ask many hard questions want to change the subject or just shrug their shoulders and happily concede, "I don't know, but God does, and that's all that matters." And it makes others of us who really struggle under the weight of unanswered questions feel like bad Christians for not having enough faith.

Let's stop pretending we have it all together.
Christian conversations often sound a lot like automated emails. We have preprogrammed auto-replies that are triggered when certain things are said or certain questions are asked. You've heard these auto-replies before, I'm sure. Maybe you've even said them yourself.
"God doesn't give you more than you can handle."
"You can do all things through Christ."
"You just have to trust Him. He knows what He's doing."
These well-meaning responses often communicate something very different than intended. They cause many of us to see Christianity as a religion full of people who always seem to trust God completely and know just what to say in every circumstance. When we experience this enough, we begin to feel like something is very wrong with us when we struggle with doubting God. So instead of being honest about it, we keep quiet.
People don't need you to be strong. What people really need is for you to have the courage to be vulnerable about your struggles.
After all, we don't want anyone to think we don't trust God.
We think no one else struggles with doubt like we do, so doubting God and His plan is even more difficult to reveal to others.
Ultimately, we are not honest about our doubts because we're afraid of being judged. We'd rather look the part of a picturesque believer, even if that means pretending we have faith than being an honest believer with real questions.
We do this because we feel alone.
We think we're the only ones wrestling with doubt. But the truth is we're not alone. We have doubt, just like everyone else; we act like we have more faith than we really do, just like everyone else; and we refuse to be honest about it for fear of being judged, just like everyone else.
But people don't need you to be strong. What people really need is for you to have the courage to be vulnerable about your struggles. They need you to be an honest Christian who is willing to take a risk and say, "I'm really struggling here. I don't have an answer, and while I'm striving to trust God, it's hard to hold on."
Ultimately, we are not honest about our doubts because we're afraid of being judged.
Honesty breaks others' walls down and helps them know that their struggles are normal. When we are honest about our struggles, it gives other people the freedom to be honest too. And when one person is vulnerable, others usually follow suit.
Honesty, gives God more to work with.
But we can't just be honest with each other. We have to be honest with God, and doubting God is a crucial part of faith.
God certainly isn't afraid of or offended by your questions. He isn't an insecure dictator who wants obedience without questions. He is a loving Father who wants you to trust Him with sincerity like any child should. So He welcomes our questions and doubts.
There was a man in the Bible who desperately needed a miracle from Jesus. When Jesus asked if the man really believed He could help, the man said, "Then I believe. Help me with my doubts," (Mark 9:24, MSG).
It is honesty, not a "fake it till you make it" attitude, that can truly lead to peace.

What to Do When God's Plan for Your Life Is Not Your Plan

STEVE MURRELL  CHARISMA NEWS
This past weekend, Deborah and I stopped in Singapore on our way to Every Nation's 2018 Build Conference in Dubai. On Sunday, I had the privilege of preaching at Every Nation Church Singapore.
The church is going through a series in Genesis, and I was asked to preach about Genesis 11:1-9. My sermon centered on two questions:
1. What do you do when God's plan for your life is different than your plan for your life?
2. What does God do when His plan for your life is different than your plan for your life?
You may be familiar with the story of the Tower of Babel. Here's the key text: "Then they said, 'Come, let us build us a city and a tower, whose top will reach to heaven, and let us make a name for ourselves; otherwise we will be scattered abroad over the face of the whole earth'" (Gen. 11:4).
In this text, we find an explicit articulation of the will of the people of Babel and an implicit reference to God's will.
The people's will: "let us build us a city ... otherwise we will be scattered abroad" (Gen. 11:4).
God's will: "And God blessed Noah and his sons and said to them: 'Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth'" (Genesis 9:1).
God wanted Noah's descendants to go and fill the earth—to be His image bearers and agents of His will in every nation and among every people. But the people of Babel wanted to stay and settle—to make a name for themselves in the land of Shinar.
So what did God do? How did God respond to the disobedience of the people of Babel?
"So the Lord scattered the abroad from there over the face of all the earth" (Gen. 11:8a).
In short, the people of Babel's disobedience did not stop God from accomplishing His will. By His grace, He confused their tongues and scattered them so that they could do what He called them to do.
Just think for a minute about the grace of God in this story.
He did not leave these people to pursue their own glory by building a city. He intervened. But God did not send fire down on Babel. He did not send a plague. He did not send an invading army.
Rather, He chose to give these people a gift—the "gift" of tongues. They probably didn't appreciate it at the time. But think about how God displayed His mercy, creativity, and sovereignty in dealing with the people of Babel.
That's how He deals with us.
We may not always like His will. We may not always pursue His will. But God will accomplish His purposes in our life anyway. By His grace, He does not punish us or abandon us. Rather, He gently frustrates our will, and time and again, repositions us to do what He called us to do.

What to Do When You Just Don't Feel Thankful

For some, the holidays are only a reminder of sadness. (Unsplash/Aricka Lewis)
Have you ever been so horrifically devastated by life's circumstances that the words, "Thank you, Jesus" get stuck in your throat? You know the words of Paul, "In everything give thanks, for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you" (1 Thess. 5:18) but somehow you don't feel like giving thanks for what you are currently facing.

If you just received a bad report from the doctor, lost your job (especially before the holidays), were handed an eviction notice, divorce papers or news that a loved one unexpectedly died, your first words, if any, might not be, "Thank you, Lord." Yet we're admonished to do just that, but we can only do it by the grace (empowerment) of God.

The holidays are upon us, and for some, it's the happiest time of the year, but for others, it's the saddest. It's easy to give thanks when you feel blessed but very hard for those who are suffering. This year has been devastating to the many who lost their homes and loved ones in the California wildfires. Others faced horrific losses through hurricanes, floods and tornadoes. Not to mention the unexpected mass murder in Las Vegas and the most recent attack on worshippers in a small town in Texas.

They will sit across the Thanksgiving table somewhere this week even though their pain is great and the wounds are still open. God understands. He's the God of all comfort.

Jesus promised us that in this world (system) we would have tribulation but admonished us to "be of good cheer" because He has overcome the world (see John 16:33). He suffered more than any one of us, yet when facing His betrayer at the Last Supper, He stopped to give thanks before sharing his heart and the bread with His disciples. read more

What to Do When You're Tired of Waiting for a Personal Prophetic Word to Manifest

Are you waiting for a personal prophecy to come to pass? (Pixabay/seagul)
Are you tired of waiting for a prophetic word to be fulfilled in your life? Have you received it, claimed it, believed for it, fought the good fight of faith with it—and have yet to see it come to pass?

If so, don't give up! Things can change in a day.

Think about the significant events in the lives of our fathers and mothers in the faith. One day, Sarah, Abraham's wife, was just an old woman with a barren womb. The next, she was pregnant with the child of promise. After 24 years of waiting for God's word to come to pass, she was doubtful. But her situation changed—big time—in just one day!

One day, David was being forced to live like a gypsy, running from the armies of King Saul. The next, his enemy was dead, and he was not only a free man but the anointed heir to the throne. David, too, had had a word from God—and after 15 years, he too had probably begun to doubt. But God saw to it that he became king on the appointed day.

There are other examples. What about Esther? One day, she was a young Israelite woman with an uncertain future. The next, she was Ahasuerus' queen.

One day, Jeremiah was just a kid. The next, he was a prophet to the nation of Israel.

One day, the Jewish people were lost, wondering why the heavens were silent and God no longer spoke to them. The next, they were gazing into the eyes of their long-awaited Messiah.

One day, the disciples were hiding in an upper room for fear of persecution. The next, they were filled with the power of the promised Holy Spirit and eager to preach, teach and work miracles in Jesus' name.

Now think about your life. Can you point to times when things changed drastically for you—in just a day? read more
