Israeli Ambassador Meets Rex Tillerson, Netanyahu Invites US Secretary of State to Israel - Yossi Aloni ISRAEL TODAY

Israeli Ambassador Meets Rex Tillerson, Netanyahu Invites US Secretary of State to Israel

Wednesday, February 15, 2017 |  Yossi Aloni  ISRAEL TODAY
Israel’s Ambassador to the United Nations, Danny Danon, got a chance to personally congratulate new US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson on the day of his confirmation when both men attended the National Prayer Breakfast earlier this month.
Danon was among some 100 foreign dignitaries invited to the annual event.
Danon and Tillerson discussed Israel’s treatment at the UN, and the Israeli thanked the Trump Administration for appointing as its new ambassador to the UN former governor of South Carolina, Nikki Haley, who has vowed unwavering defense of the Jewish state.
On Tuesday, shortly after touching down in Washington, DC for his first meeting with President Trump, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu invited Tillerson to visit Israel in the near future to continue their discussions on pressing matters such as Iran.

Israeli Women Urge Ivanka Trump to Help Negotiate Mideast Peace - Yossi Aloni ISRAEL TODAY

Israeli Women Urge Ivanka Trump to Help Negotiate Mideast Peace

Wednesday, February 15, 2017 |  Yossi Aloni  ISRAEL TODAY
The Israeli grassroots movement “Women Make Peace” has sent a letter to Ivanka Trump urging her to take a significant role in the efforts of her father’s administration to bring peace to the Middle East.
The Israelis noted that as a mother, a successful businesswoman, and her father’s most trusted adviser (some would say she’s the most powerful woman in the US), Ivanka is among the most qualified people in Washington to oversee Israeli-Palestinian negotiations.
Women Make Peace is a movement of thousands of Israeli women from across the political spectrum and including both Arabs and Jews. They are frustrated with the government’s handling of the peace process and Palestinian terrorism.
Last October, they conducted a “March of Hope” outside Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s residence in Jerusalem.
In their letter to Ivanka, the Israeli women congratulated her husband, Jared Kushner, for being named President Trump’s frontman for the Middle East. And they insisted she must also be involved.
“We wish your husband success in his role…and hope that together you can redirect your wisdom, negotiating skills and determination to bring about a political settlement between Israel and the Palestinians,” the women wrote. “We, the women of Israel, will do everything possible to help.”
Avital Brown, the activist who wrote the letter, said it’s timing was no coincidence. Netanyahu was scheduled to meet with President Trump on Wednesday, and the Israeli women feel there is only a very narrow window of opportunity to take drastic new action if another war is to be avoided.

Enjoy Your Flight to Palestine?! - Yossi Aloni ISRAEL TODAY

Enjoy Your Flight to Palestine?!

Ground crew at the international airport in Belgrade, Serbia last week caused an uproar when they made a final call for an Air Serbia flight to Tel Aviv by urging passengers to board their flight to “Palestine.”
Israeli passengers refused to board until the ground crew retracted and corrected the call.
“Suddenly, the flight attendant announced over the loudspeaker: ‘Passengers on flight 816 to Palestine should proceed to gate C3.’ And she made the announcement twice,” said one of the Israelis. “I couldn’t believe my ears. I asked several people if I heard the announcement correctly. Myself and another Israeli passenger approached the counter and insisted they announce the flight to Israel, not Palestine.”
The managing attendant insisted that the flight was to Tel Aviv, not Israel.
“I told her that it was also not a flight to Palestine, and insisted that the announcement be amended, otherwise we would not board a flight to ‘Palestine,’” the passenger continued.
After heated debate with colleagues, the manager eventually announced the flight to Tel Aviv, and apologies were offered to the Israelis.
Israel Foreign Ministry Spokesman Emmanuel Nahshon called the incident “very disturbing. He promised to bring the issue to the Serbian authorities and Air Serbia, adding that ”it’s inconceivable that an airport employee with a microphone can try and change reality in such a defiant and false manner."
Israel’s ambassador to Serbia, Alona Fisher-Kamm, later contacted the CEO of Air Serbia, who reportedly expressed shock and dismay over the incident.
“This political position doesn’t reflect the company’s position,” he insisted, while apologizing profusely to Fisher-Kamm.
The following day, an investigation by Air Serbia found that it was an airport employee, and not an employee of the airline, that had made the offending announcement. Air Serbia has demanded that airport officials in Belgrade discipline the employee for damaging the airline’s reputation.

Netanyahu Celebrates Egyptian Revolution Day - Yossi Aloni ISRAEL TODAY

Netanyahu Celebrates Egyptian Revolution Day

Tuesday, August 16, 2016 |  Yossi Aloni  ISRAEL TODAY
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his wife, Sara, last month took part in the celebration of Egypt’s Revolution Day (July 23) at the residence of Egyptian ambassador Hazem Khairat.
It was the first time since 2009 that Netanyahu has participated in the event.
Relations between Israel and Egypt were increasingly strained in recent years, and hit a low point during the short tenure of Muslim Brotherhood President Mohammed Morsi.
But despite an overall chilly atmosphere, the official working relationship between Netanyahu’s government and new Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi is considered good. Netanyahu has even endorsed an initiative by el-Sisi to broker Israeli-Palestinian peace talks.
Israeli President Reuven Rivlin was also in attendance, and told his Egyptian hosts, in Arabic, that “Israel stands by Egypt in its fight against terrorism. Our struggle will help the entire region and all of mankind. …Thirty-seven years of peace [between Israel and Egypt] is a testimony and we must learn from this for future generations.”
Netanyahu also spoke, congratulating the Egyptians on their Revolution Day, and noting that they and the Israelis are “two ancient peoples with a glorious history. Our two peoples laid the foundation for a human culture that has endured thousands of years, and today we must join hands and fight against those who would destroy our civilization. We must join hands in peace.”

Israeli Doctors Save 4000th Foreign Child's Heart - Yossi Aloni ISRAEL TODAY

Israeli Doctors Save 4000th Foreign Child's Heart

Wednesday, July 13, 2016 |  Yossi Aloni  ISRAEL TODAY
Sanusey lives with his family in a small town south of the capital of Gambia, the smallest country on the African continent. At the age of three months, doctors diagnosed him with a severe heart defect. After three years of regular trips to the local hospital, doctors there began searching for expertise from abroad to save Sanusey’s life. They found that expertise in Israel.
Sanusey arrived in Israel last month along with three other children from the Islamic Republic of Gambia to undergo life-saving heart surgery courtesy of the Israeli NGO Save a Child’s Heart. The British Jewish Federation in cooperation with Israeli Ambassador to Senegal Paul Hirshon, who is responsible for relations with Gambia, connected the children and their families with this wonderful organization.
Four-year-old Sanusey marked a milestone for Save a Child’s Heart, being the 4,000th child that the organization has connected with Israeli doctors for successful life-saving heart surgery. Many of those children have come from Africa and the Arab Middle East.
Given the complicated nature of Sanusey’s condition, his treatment was at times harrowing for both doctors and the little boy’s family.
After arriving at Ben Gurion Airport with his big sister, Panda, Sanusey was taken to Wolfson Medical Center in the Tel Aviv suburb of Holon for preliminary tests. Shortly after, his condition deteriorated severely. Within minutes, the medical staff stabilized little Sanusey and rushed him into emergency surgery, where Dr. Lior Sasson and his operating staff worked for hours to save the boy’s life.
Panda was left to sit, cry and pray for her brother. Those prayers were answered, and just three days after surgery, Sanusey was sitting up in bed and smiling. Today, he is recovering with other children from around the world at the Save a Child’s Heart center in Holon.
A further three children from Gambia recently arrived in Israel for heart surgery, and Ambassador Hirshon has arranged for a number of doctors from the African nation to visit Israel and gain the knowhow to provide more advanced care at home.

Dorothy Immigrates to Israel at 95 - It's Never Too Late! - Yossi Aloni ISRAEL TODAY

Dorothy Immigrates to Israel at 95 - It's Never Too Late!

Tuesday, June 07, 2016 |  Yossi Aloni  ISRAEL TODAY
"All my life I dreamed of living in Israel but only made it today. It has taken me a long time to to fulfill this dream, but it's never too late," said the 95-year-old Dorothy Truttner after her immigration to Israel made possible with the aid of the Nefesh B'Nefesh organization.
The EL AL flight from Toronto to Israel was accompanied by many emotions as it flew the excited Dorothy Truttner to Israel. Truttner left Toronto for the last time, the city where she was born and had spent her entire life. During the flight, she was surprised when the stewardesses handed her a personal letter of congratulations from the chairman of El Al airlines, David Maimon. "On behalf of all the employees of EL AL I want to wish you every success on your immigration. For the last 20 years you had been a loyal passenger and flew to Israel at least twice a year. We are a national airline and are very excited to be part of your immigration," Maimon wrote.
Dorothy Truttner will be live in Jerusalem with her son. She has 9 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren, the last born just a few days ago. "I have visited Israel 45 times in my life, but this is the first time I booked a oneway ticket," said Dorothy. "I'm so happy that I can fulfill a lifelong dream and be with my children, grandchildren and great grandchildren," she said.
"Dorothy's immigration at the age of 95 proves that age is no barrier for immigrating to Israel," said the vice president of Nefesh B'Nefesh, Zeev Graschinsky.
Dorothy is not the oldest immigrant who has immigrated to Israel with Nefesh B'Nefesh. The then 100 year-old Sabina Wistrich emigrated from London to Israel in 2010. She will soon be celebrating her 106th birthday.
