Hebrew Music Monday ✡ "Go in Peace!" - ISRAEL365

And Jonathan said to David, "Go in peace! We have sworn both of us in the name of the Lord, saying, 'May the Lord be between me and you, and between my descendants and your descendants forever.' "

Today's Israel Inspiration

Although the biblical Jonathan was extremely righteous, and a true friend of David, Scripture finds fault in the way he sent David on his way without food. Fleeing from King Saul, David traveled in hunger to the city of Nov, where he desperately requested provisions. From Jonathan's mistake, we are taught to always send off guests with enough food for their journey. Colel Chabad, Israel's oldest continuous charity since 1788, is devoted to providing food and sustenance to Israel's most destitute citizens.

From horn to shofar:
How to create one of the most emotive instruments

The shofar is one of the most inspiring instruments. Used in synagogues during the Days of Awe, the shofar will be blown to herald the coming of the Messiah. Did you know that it used to take about 3 months to turn an animal's horn into a shofar? With today's technology, the process is much quicker. Watch and see how the shofar is made.

Thank  you very much for your wonderful emails. I am so grateful to be learning. The more I learn the less I realize I know! I was born in Kenya, East Africa in 1936. Then British and Christian. We all went to really good Christian Schools -  they were the only ones! We now live in America where our daughters are. I have a brother who still lives in Kenya, and praise God we are going back in Nov/Dec to see him and one or two old friends who also didn't have to leave. Yours sincerely, Mary Rooken-Smith

Today's Israel Inspiration

The Seder includes a number of songs praising God for His presence in our lives as a people and as individuals. Today’s passage is from a song that recounts the great miracles that God performed for us throughout history in the middle of the night. It alludes to a message of hope that the "dawn" of redemption will follow the "night" and darkness of exile."Geula" is a beautiful feminine Hebrew name that means "redemption." Learn the meaning of your Hebrew name and proudly wear it on gold and silver jewelry from Israel.

Hebrew Music Monday ✡ "Sing to the Lord a New Song" - ISRAEL365

Sing to the Lord a new song, His praise from the end of the earth, those who go down to the sea and those therein, the islands and their inhabitants.

Today's Israel Inspiration

The root word 'shir' שיר, song is found hundreds of times in the Bible, and Biblical personalities had strong ties to song: Saul with his music, David with his harp, and the Levites singing in the Temple. It is also no coincidence that the gematria (Hebrew alphabet and number correspondance) of 'song', shir, is equal to that of prayer, תפילה, tefillah. Music is a force of elevation for the intense feelings connected to prayer. At times the melody attached to the words produce as strong feelings as the words themselves.

“Prayer Request from our Reader”

It’s great to hear from so many of you - stay in touch and let us know where in the world you are enjoying Israel365!

My wife and I pray for the peace of Israel and Jerusalem and also for the world. I am asking for the prayers of the Jewish people for the flooding that is going on in Louisiana and for us, we are the only family that is left on the road of our community. I pray, as does my wife, that God will see us through this flooding of our home. I hope you understand. We are not rich or wealthy people. Please remember us in your prayers. - Robert Peterson

Sing Along to Hebrew Music Monday ✡ "He Proclaimed in the Name of the Lord" - ISRAEL365

He planted an eshel tree in Be'er Sheva,
and there he proclaimed in the Name of the Lord,
God of the Universe.

וַיִּטַּע אֶשֶׁל בִּבְאֵר שָׁבַע וַיִּקְרָא שָׁם בְּשֵׁם יְ-הוָה אֵל עוֹלָם

בראשית כ’’א:ל’’ג

va-yi-ta e-shel bi-bayr sha-va va-yik-ra sham b'-shaym a-do-nai ayl o-lam

Today's Israel Inspiration

Today we gain beautiful insight into Abraham's generous ways. The "eshel" was a fruit tree that Abraham planted to serve fruits to his guests. Our Sages go even deeper and say that "eshel" is an acronym for three Hebrew words: eating (אכילה  a-khee-la), drinking (שתיה sh'tee-ya) and escorting (לויה levaya), the three types of hospitality that Abraham was famous for offering to his guests. Colel Chabad, Israel's oldest charitable organization, follows in the footsteps of Abraham by helping Israel's neediest citizens- widows and orphans, the sick and elderly, poor immigrants, and hospitalized children. Among many projects to help the poor, Colel Chabad now operates 18 free soup kitchens, serving up over 1 million meals annually. Many of the recipients are aged Holocaust survivors who come as much out of their need of a warm smile and simple human contact, as they do for the nutritious food.
