Holocaust Survivor and Nobel Peace Prize Winner, Elie Wiesel, Has Died - David Lazarus ISRAEL TODAY

Holocaust Survivor and Nobel Peace Prize Winner, Elie Wiesel, Has Died

Sunday, July 03, 2016 |  David Lazarus  ISRAEL TODAY
Nobel Prize laureate Elie Wiesel, the Holocaust survivor whose sad eyed face became a piercing, reminder of humanity’s ongoing agony, has died at age 87.
For more than a half-century, Wiesel gave voice to the pain of our people to influential leaders, celebrities and audiences around the world. He wrote more than 40 books, and was best known for "Night," a retelling of his experiences as a 15-year-old boy in Auschwitz.
The best way we can all remember Mr. Wiesel is to listen closely to a man who lost his mother, father and sister in a Nazi death camp, tattooed with the number A-7713 on his arm, as he stands before the world, telling his story upon receiving the Noble Peace Prize.
"I remember: it happened yesterday or eternities ago. A young Jewish boy discovered the kingdom of night. I remember his bewilderment, I remember his anguish. It all happened so fast. The ghetto. The deportation. The sealed cattle car. The fiery altar upon which the history of our people and the future of mankind were meant to be sacrificed.
I remember: he asked his father: "Can this be true?" This is the twentieth century, not the Middle Ages. Who would allow such crimes to be committed? How could the world remain silent?
And now the boy is turning to me: "Tell me," he asks. "What have you done with my future? What have you done with your life?"
And I tell him that I have tried. That I have tried to keep memory alive, that I have tried to fight those who would forget. Because if we forget, we are guilty, we are accomplices.
And then I explained to him how naive we were, that the world did know and remain silent. And that is why I swore never to be silent whenever and wherever human beings endure suffering and humiliation. We must always take sides. Neutrality helps the oppressor, never the victim. Silence encourages the tormentor, never the tormented. Sometimes we must interfere. When human lives are endangered, when human dignity is in jeopardy, national borders and sensitivities become irrelevant. Wherever men or women are persecuted because of their race, religion, or political views, that place must – at that moment – become the center of the universe.
We must not allow our past to become our children’s future."
In 1985, when Wiesel received a Congressional Gold Medal from President Ronald Reagan, he stood before the gathering, and as the president looked on, asked him to cancel a planned trip to a cemetery in Germany that contained graves of Hitler's SS guards.
"May I, Mr. President, if it's possible at all, implore you to do something else, to find a way, to find another way, another site. That place, Mr. President, is not your place. Your place is with the victims."

"The City of David" ✡ Amazing Discoveries in the City of David in Jerusalem - ISRAEL365

Nevertheless David took the stronghold of Zion;
the same is the City of David

Today's Israel Inspiration

King David's palace was amazingly discovered in the City of David, just outside the present walls of the Old City of Jerusalem. After years of archaeological excavations, an ancient Canaanite fortress was uncovered at this site as well. As today's verse describes, when King David entered the city he conquered the "stronghold of Zion" from the pagan Jebusites, quite possibly this very fortress discovered thousands of years later! By wearing a piece of jewelry from the City of David, you carry the ancient biblical world with you, each gorgeous replica copying archaeological findings to the most minute detail.

Where the Bible Comes
to Life

The City of David, located south of the Temple Mount, is rich with archeological treasures that map out the stories of the Bible and the Jewish kings.

World's Oldest Man, 112, Survived Auschwitz and Lives in Israel

When God set down His ideal age limit in the Bible at 120 (Gen. 6:3), he may have had this man in mind: Holocaust survivor Yisrael Kristal of Haifa has been recognized as the oldest man alive today by the Guinness Book of World Records.

'The Joshua and Caleb Report' DVD Sets

In this 4-DVD set, representing the first and second seasons of the series, Joshua and Caleb Waller travel Jerusalem, Judea and Samaria to listen to the stories of those who live in the place that the world chooses to call the “West Bank.” You will meet the real faces of people that live in the heartland of Israel.  Choose either season for a 2 DVD set or get both sets for a total of 4 DVD's.

Today's Israel Photo

Igor Farberov's photo of Jerusalem's Old City walls. The walls and gates were built in the early 16th c. by the Turkish Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent, who mistakenly excluded an important site. The City of David and David's Palace were later discovered close to, but not within, the Sultan's walls.

Yesterday's Photo Trivia

Yesterday's photo featured a roaring Sa'ars Fall in the Golan Heights of Northern Israel. The waterfalls are best visited in the winter or spring when the water and snow from Mount Hermon are still making their descent to the Sea of Galilee.

Holocaust Survivor Saved by Christians Returns the Favor

Holocaust Survivor Saved by Christians Returns the Favor

Thursday, July 16, 2015 |  Israel Today Staff
At the age of 19, Arthur George Weidenfeld was among the many Jews whom British Christians successfully rescued from Nazi-controlled Austria just as Adolf Hitler and his cohorts were putting the “Final Solution” into action.
Seventy-seven years later, now a British lord, Weidenfeld is looking to return the favor by rescuing Syrian and Iraqi Christians under mortal threat from the advancing Islamist horde known as ISIS.
Weidenfeld was brought to England in 1938 by the Quakers and the Plymouth Brethren. Not long after, he started the publishing business of Weidenfeld and Nicolson. In 1976, his overwhelming success and unrestrained philanthropy landed Weidenfeld the title of Lord, Baron Weidenfeld, to be exact.
This week, Weidenfeld told London’s The Times that he “has a debt to repay,” and has established the Weidenfeld Safe Havens Fund to transport and financially support Middle East Christians facing forced conversion and death.
According to reports, the Fund has already flown 150 Syrian Christians to Poland, where it will support them financially for the next 12–18 months while they get on their feet and integrate with their new country.
The initial goal is to get as many as 2,000 Christians out of Syria in the coming months.
Much like with the Nazi Holocaust, the nations of the world are doing very little to assist and save the beleaguered Christians of the Middle East, leaving individuals and smaller organizations to tackle this impossible task.
Weidenfeld acknowledged that he can’t save everyone, but feels there is significance in a Jewish Holocaust survivor reaching out a helping hand to Christians in the greatest of need.

"A Day of Destruction and Desolation" ✡ Today is Holocaust Remembrance Day (Yom HaShoah)

A day of destruction and desolation, a day of blackness and gloom, a day of clouds and thick darkness.

ZEPHANIAH (1:15)

יוֹם שֹׁאָה וּמְשׁוֹאָה יוֹם חֹשֶׁךְ וַאֲפֵלָה יוֹם עָנָן וַעֲרָפֶל

Yom HaShoah

Today marks Holocaust Remembrance Day, which in Hebrew is called “Yom HaShoah” and comes from our verse in Zephaniah describing the devastating destruction of Jerusalem. Yom HaShoah was established by the Knesset and coincides with the anniversary of the Warsaw ghetto uprising, remembering not only the destruction of European Jewry, but recalling the heroic revolt. On this day, let us memorialize the six million who perished by strengthening our commitment to God, and intensifying our Torah learning.

IDF Chief of Staff Meets Holocaust Survivor

This Holocaust survivor still cannot believe that from the ashes of Auschwitz, he survived to become an Israeli Army commander.

Righteous Gentiles' Grandchildren Serve in IDF

Noga Peter, 21, and Hadas Avraham Weisbecker, 22, are descendants of heroes who saved Jews in the Holocaust, and now they are continuing their grandparents’ legacies in the Israeli army.
