Rejection is a lying spirit that draws us into thinking in a way that is contrary to what the Word of God states. Rejection plagues most people and has been built up as a stronghold in many people's lives. It creates disunity in relationships, destroys destinies, and releases bitterness, resentment, and offense.

How Do We Conquer Rejection?

Acknowledging that you are suffering from rejection is the first step in removing this hindrance from your life. Recognizing rejecting thoughts, casting them down, and taking them captive will be instrumental in receiving your deliverance. Second Corinthians 10:5 (NASB) instructs us to "take every thought captive." In the Complete Jewish Bible, "taking the thought captive" actually means submitting the thought and making the thought obey Christ.

When thoughts of rejection come in, they must be submitted to the Word of God. Ask yourself: Does this thought line up with the Word of God or contradict what the Bible says about me and who I am? Rejection comes in through the words people speak to us or actions they take with regard to us. Rejection can also come from how we perceive a situation.

Our identity comes from God, not what people think.

We should desire to love and live in unity with people, but people are not where our identity should come from. Our identity comes from knowing who we are in Christ and whose we are. As we read the Bible and learn about our kingdom inheritance and our rightful position and authority in the kingdom, it will affirm us.

We will then take our eyes off the need for people's approval and know that we are accepted and loved by God. When we know that God accepts us and that we are living in the fullness of His love and power, no one can reject us.

Casting down the thoughts of what other people think is an ongoing battle. However, it is a battle you can conquer. When you are in God's presence, He will speak to you and reveal the lies that seem like reality. He will assist you in removing those lies through His Word.

Steps to Conquer Rejection

Pray and ask the Holy Spirit to reveal the pockets of rejection in your life.

Repent of where you have taken in rejection.

Declare: I am accepted and loved by God, and that is the real truth I need to believe.
Ask God to help you get over your need to feel accepted and approved by others.
Learn your identity in Christ through reading books and the Word of God.

Take every thought captive and cast out the ones that don't line up with the Word of God.
Each and every thought must be taken captive and cast down. Rejection builds up when we take those thoughts in and take ownership of such thoughts. Instead of casting them down, we take them in and allow them to build strongholds in us.

Each time we own thought and don't cast it down, it is part of a platform we build inside ourselves. We build up that rejection with each and every thought that comes our way. Rejection manifests because we don't take thoughts captive and dismiss them for what they are—lies and distortions of who we are.

The Bible says who you are and whose you are. Do you believe you are seated in heavenly places? When you renew your mind, when you close the doors to the lies and know you are accepted by God, then and only then will you not allow rejection to penetrate your heart and mind. Keep your heart and mind connected to Christ Jesus and what He says about you.

One of the keys to the kingdom is knowing God works through voluntary sons, who in turn work out of the desires Father wrote in their hearts (Jer. 31:33-34; Heb. 8:10-11). There is a distinct authenticity that is readily apparent in sons connecting with their hearts. Plus, it's fun! The blueprint for our kingdom assignment is both in our hearts and God's heart. I'll find the same thing in both places. Is it easy to figure out what that is? No! Most people struggle, and many give up and never connect with either their hearts or God's heart in a way that causes their life, ministry, and vocation to become an integral story that produces fruit and leads to an intentional objective. Many sincere believers spend their lives wandering and wondering through an unexplainable wilderness, bouncing off life's blessings and tragedies in an unpredictable, cosmic game of ping pong. It doesn't have to be this confusing.

Jer. 29:11-14 (NIV) – "For I know the plans I have for you," declares the Lord, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. Then you will call upon me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you. You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart. I will be found by you," declares the Lord.

Is There a Plan?

Yes, there is a plan. Where is it? It's in your heart and God's heart. How do I find it? Connect with a man of understanding to draw it out. So, who is the man of understanding? I don't think it's a coincidence that Understanding is one of the seven spirits of God (Isa 11:2-3; Rev 5:12, 7:12). A wise mentor can help us connect with our hearts, but they always point us back to the Father and the Spirit of Understanding. Running back and forth to a human mentor can help, but it isn't a permanent solution. The Father wants to talk to us Himself! … Regularly!

Prov. 20:5 A plan in the heart of a man is like deep water, But a man of understanding draws it out.

The Context of the Plan

We can see the context of Proverbs 20:5 in verse 4. God's plan for us includes our vocation and finances, not just our spiritual ministry or the theme of our preaching. We are still transitioning out of the poverty of believing that God's call is a sermonic platform for us to tell others what to do – It's simply not! Our calling is always about providing value to other people around what they want to have; not around what we want to preach.

Prov 20:4-5 (NASU) The sluggard does not plow after the autumn, So he begs during the harvest and has nothing. A plan in the heart of a man is like deep water, But a man of understanding draws it out.

The Degree of Difficulty

Is it easy to fish that purpose out of the deep water of my own heart? No, it takes faith (an awareness that it's in there waiting to be found) and persistence (to seek God for as long as it takes to find it). It's the nature of God to hide things from us to deepen our hunger for Him and our purpose in life. Most believers expect finding their purpose to be easy and automatic. It's not. Purpose unfolds over a lifetime of hunger for God and knowing where to look. In the natural, our hearts are unsearchable. (Prov.25:3)

Heb. 11:6 (NIV) And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him.

Prov. 25:2-3 (NIV) It is the glory of God to conceal a matter; to search out a matter is the glory of kings. As the heavens are high and the earth is deep, so the hearts of kings are unsearchable.

Deut. 4:29-30 (NIV) But if from there you seek the Lord your God, you will find him if you look for him with all your heart and with all your soul.

Prov. 8:17-18 (NIV) I love those who love me, and those who seek me find me. With me are riches and honor, enduring wealth and prosperity.

Hearing Other's Hearts

Once I can draw the purpose out of my own heart and God's heart, I'll connect with my ministry in terms of my life and vocation or business. The very next step in a prospering vocation or business is my ability to hear what's in another person's heart. If the product I have brings value to other people, they are more than happy to buy it, promote it, and celebrate it (and me) because they see the fruit of what I bring to their lives, whether it's a widget or a service. Hearing hearts is the secret to marketing and ministry!

Summary

The spiritual and business side of your life purpose flows out of three skills:
  • Our ability to discern the purpose that God wrote in our heart,
  • Our ability to prophetically connect with God's heart; what He is doing, and
  • Our ability to hear what's in the heart of other people and bring them value that furthers their purpose and makes their dream come true.

I'm grateful for my friend Quentin Beard, who pastors one of the fastest growing churches in South Dakota, Sioux Falls First Assembly. Because Quentin wants his congregation to experience the Holy Spirit, he scheduled a special weekend of meetings so that people could be baptized in the Holy Spirit, get healing prayer and receive personal prophetic ministry.

The day before the event, I asked Quentin if we could have a larger-than-normal bottle of oil on the altar near the stage. Most churches just have a small cruet or vial of oil; I wanted more, so one of the church's pastors filled a half-gallon bottle. The quantity of oil was prophetic in itself, because the Lord visited us in power. Many people were filled with the Spirit during those three days.

Are you hungry for more of the Holy Spirit in your church? It's time to stop limiting His power.

Everywhere I go, I hear pastors asking how they can we encourage the freedom of the Holy Spirit in a church culture that has become increasingly scripted, scheduled and controlled right down to the nanosecond. The essence of Pentecost, which came "suddenly," was its unpredictability. But there seems to be no room for God's sudden surprises when we already have our sermons planned out for the next six months.

Here are eight practical things we can do to encourage the freedom of Pentecost in our churches:

Teach about the Holy Spirit often. The Holy Spirit was rarely mentioned in the church I grew up in, so we never expected Him to do anything. Yet He is described in the second verse of the Bible as "moving" upon the surface of the newly created world (Gen. 1:2), and He has one of the last messages in the Bible (see Rev. 22:17). He moves and He speaks throughout the Scriptures! But we must invite Him to move and speak by giving Him the place He deserves.

Leave room for personal prayer ministry. A church without altar ministry is like a hospital without a maternity ward. New life begins at the altar—whether it is salvation, healing, prophetic ministry or the impartation of a fresh anointing. Today many churches that offer multiple services often skimp on ministry time because they are focused on herding the 10 a.m. group out of the sanctuary to get ready for the 11:30 a.m. crowd. Multiple services are fine, but we are crowding the Spirit out of the church if we don't schedule time for people to respond to the message.

Have small groups where people can use the Holy Spirit's gifts. It's not practical for everyone to prophesy or exercise other spiritual gifts in a large congregation. But if people are plugged into small groups, there will be opportunities for believers to encourage one another in supernatural ways. And people are more comfortable stepping out in faith in front of 10 people than they are in front of 3,000.

Train people in prophecy, healing and Spirit-led ministry. Many pastors clamp down on the operation of spiritual gifts because a few fanatics with inflated egos like to pull the church into weirdness. But in our effort to protect the sheep from deception, let's not pull the pendulum to the other extreme by forbidding the gifts of the Spirit. The genuine power of God will flow if we teach people the difference between authentic anointing and strange fire.

Offer "teaching moments" to explain the gifts of the Spirit. I've been in churches where Brother Herschel or Sister Agnes prophesied in such a harsh, condemning tone that everyone in the church let out a collective groan. Their "words from God" had the same effect on the congregation as fingernails on a chalkboard. We cannot just ignore these moments and move on. When the Corinthians mishandled speaking in tongues and prophecy in the first century, the apostle Paul used their mistakes as an opportunity to teach about how to use gifts properly.

Expose your church to healthy ministries that flow in the anointing. God has raised up thousands of prophets who have not bowed their knees to the Baals of exploitation, greed and gimmicks. We need life-giving traveling ministries because God sends them to win new converts, heal the sick, unleash prophetic power, train leaders and impart new vision in congregations. We should not be afraid to expose our churches to men and women of character who are called to minister in the supernatural.

Give time for testimonies of God's supernatural power. Nothing raises the faith level of a congregation like someone's raw experience with God. If a man was healed this week in your church, let him shout it from the housetops. If an infertile couple got pregnant, let them tell about the goodness of God. Stories of supernatural intervention trigger a holy expectation in everyone—and God gets the glory for His miracles.

Preach about holiness. Let's never forget that the Holy Spirit is holy. Many churches today have stopped warning God's people about the dangers of sin, so we don't confront anymore. We've figured out that people will pack the house if we give them sugary-sweet motivational pep talks that never step on toes. By avoiding the tough topics, we've essentially told the Holy Ghost to take a hike.

We will be celebrating Pentecost in a few weeks. Let's fling open the doors and allow the Spirit to have His way. Instead of being afraid of what He might disrupt or whom He might offend, let's rather fear what our churches would be like without Him.
