Can This Spiritual Weapon Erase 1,400 Years of Biblical Misconceptions?

SHAWN A. AKERS CHARISMA NEWS
Weapons of mass destruction" is a term commonly used by those bent on world domination. The Rev. Dr. Bassam Chedid, however, believes he possesses the most powerful weapon of all, what he calls a "weapon of mass instruction."
That weapon is the Word of God in the form of the Arabic Study Bible (ASB). With God's help, he's trying to place this weapon into the hands of as many Arab Christians and Muslims as possible.
Founder and president of the Children of Abraham (COA) organization based in Colorado Springs, Colorado, Chedid is confident that the Holy Spirit will use the ASB to convict Muslims and erase 1,400 years of their misconceptions about the gospel of Jesus throughout the world.
"The Holy Spirit is moving in mighty ways among Muslims," Chedid said. "When we hear of the dreams and visions these precious souls have, it is only God illuminating to them the gospel truth found in His Word and drawing them to Himself, generating in their hearts the transforming knowledge of Jesus Christ applied by God the Holy Spirit.

"For many reasons, when they are first introduced to Christ, Muslims become confused about how to make sense of it. There are so many millions of brothers and sisters who are trapped in the Islamic system, but praise God, He is bringing the sheep back into the fold—He is bringing them to Himself."
Blessing Generations of Arabs
Published in 2014, the ASB took more than five years to complete. Chedid served as the general editor of the project, which he said took a lot of "prayer and sweat."
Working on the Bible was "a labor of love for me, a lot of work, but very rewarding," Chedid said.
The ASB became the first one of its kind to hit the market. Many of the Bible's features, including theological articles, notes on the unfolding of God's story of salvation and an appendix explaining Scripture's redemptive message, will be helpful to the readers of the ASB.
Because of the many Muslims coming to Christ throughout the globe, the ASB has become especially crucial for new converts.
"As a young Christian, I longed for a study Bible in Arabic where I could find exegetical helps, background information and definitions of theological terms, but it was simply nonexistent," said Tony Maalouf, director of the Islamic Studies Program and associate professor of missions at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth, Texas. "This work will definitely prove to be a blessing for generations of Arabs. Today, we are witnessing crucial socio-political transformations in the Arab world. It is my deep conviction that the ASB will be a unique and great catalyst for that change."
However, like many other ministries, COA faces a huge challenge: finances. The leatherbound ASB is expensive to produce, and the ministry website says COA can send just one Bible per $60 gift.
COA also produces a basic Arabic Bible without commentary notes, which costs only $7.
Chedid's goal is to get the ASB into the hands of 100,000 Arabic Christians—and potential Arabic believers—in the hope that members of those groups will hold God's Word into their hearts and produce disciples exponentially. He realizes this outcome will require a massive partnership effort.
"Not only are the Bibles costly, but it's also costly to send them airmail," Chedid said. "The need is great, and the Lord is enabling us with the resources we have, but it certainly isn't enough.
"What we would like to do is get information in the hands of churches that have a real burden for reaching the lost and for making disciples. We can accomplish the task, but we need that 'weapon of mass instruction'—the Word of God—to do it."
Calling From God to Reach Muslims
A missionary first introduced Chedid's grandfather to Christ, who then passed this knowledge along to Chedid's father. Chedid's father went on to attend Bible college in Lebanon and years later, saw his young son come to Christ.
"Even though I am from Syria, I came from a Christian background," Chedid said. "Unlike the majority of the people in that country, I did not grow up in a Muslim family, and I knew about Jesus from a very young age. I thank God for that, and it only fueled the fire for me to help Muslims find their way to Christ. I knew all along it was a calling God had put upon my life. I realized how much of a challenge it would be, but I also realized how rewarding it would be. And, it certainly has been."
When it was time for Chedid to pursue his formal education, he came to the United States in 1977 to attend Simpson University in Redding, California, where he earned a bachelor's degree. He then received a Master of Divinity and Doctor of Missiology degree from Reformed Theological Seminary, during which time he founded COA, aiming to reach Arabs across the U.S. and Canada with the gospel.
After initially accumulating nearly 16,000 names and addresses of these Arabs, Chedid began publishing the magazine Al-Kawkab—translated "The Morning Star" from Revelation 22:16: "I, Jesus, have sent my angel to you with this testimony for the churches. I am the Root and the Offspring of David, the Bright and Morning Star."
Written from a distinctly Christian viewpoint, the magazine includes articles that capture the truth of the gospel and take a fresh look at issues facing the Arab Christian population.
Al-Kawkab has become the largest means of outreach for COA to the North American Arab community, which has large concentrations in the Northeast, Florida, Northern and Southern California, Chicago, Dallas and Houston. COA's mailing list has grown to nearly 200,000, but as with the ASB, finances have become a concern.
For instance, 20,000 names on COA's mailing list did not receive its magazine's December issue. When subscribers ask why, the ministry replies that it must do this on a rotating basis, and those subscribers will certainly receive the next issue.
"It's heartbreaking, because you know the need," Chedid said. "The great missionary to Islam, Samuel Zwemer, said at the turn of the century: 'If Muslims are ever to understand Christianity in its saving truth and its wholesome life, we must place before them the Word of God and good biblical literature.' We are trusting the Lord to help us continue doing just that."
Even with the distribution of Al-Kawkab, however, COA reaches only a small percentage of Arabs in North America. In 1930, only one mosque existed in the United States, but today, there are more than 1,200, and nearly 80 percent of those are less than 10 years old.
On the other hand, Chedid says more Muslims have come to Christ in the last 50 years than in the 1,400 years since Islam began.
Facing Ministry Challenges
Because of the significant differences in culture, problems arise when presenting the gospel to both Arab Christians and Muslims. Chedid says that, for the most part, Muslims don't have a choice to pursue any religion other than Islam or any other God but Allah.
"Historically, the church has made meager efforts to present the authentic message of the gospel to Muslims," Chedid said.
In analyzing this issue, he refers to Romans 10:2, in which Paul says, "For I testify about them that they have a zeal for God, but not according to knowledge."
"Most Muslims had had little chance to believe because they have heard and seen so little of the gospel," Chedid said. "They have zeal, but it is headed in the wrong direction. We need to remember that Muhammad and many generations of his spiritual followers have not had the Bible in their own language, and so they have not understood the gospel. The truth of God's glorious self-revelation in Christ and His Word has been hidden from millions of Muslims. We wonder why Muslims today look upon the Word of God with suspicion. History and our allegiance to the Word of God demand that COA be committed to place the Word of God in the hands of many Muslims."
When talking to Muslims about Jesus, Chedid and COA ministry workers must overcome another hurdle, the fear potential converts feel as they face reprisal for accepting Christ.
"Indeed, that is a challenge for all Christian workers," Chedid said. "To leave Islam and to embrace another religion—for them, this is treason. There are many punishments, including death, and the enemy uses that fear as a weapon against the gospel. Some are so confused and afraid to accept such a religion for fear of their families dishonoring them. Their churches, if they make it that far, are targeted by radicals. And then there are those who do not find a nourishing fellowship. It's a multifaceted issue."
Syrian refugees are pleading for Bibles. "Will you help us help them?" is the question a missionary working among Syrian refugees—who number more than 1 million—recently asked Chedid.
He says the ASB is the greatest gift to help them discover the truth of Scripture and grow in grace. It is the prayer of the COA ministry to send several thousand Bibles to Syrians.
In addition to distributing the ASB, Chedid says he hopes to increase subscriptions to Al-Kawkab worldwide to reach more Arab Christians.
In North America, COA conducts seminars to inform churches about the challenges of Islam.
"Once we equip these people with the tools they need, it is our job to help them get the Word of God in their hearts," Chedid said. "Then and only then can we take down the real enemy and his deceit and lies. Imagine a world where millions of Arabs come to Christ. It will certainly reinforce our confidence in God's promise: 'I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overcome it.'"

Why Believers Have a Duty to Confront Anti-Semitism

SHAWN A. AKERS  CHARISMA NEWS
"Seventy years after the Holocaust, we're seeing the ideas that Hitler was advancing coming back in just a moment when we thought those ideas were defeated. They're coming back in a big way," Robert Nicholson, founder and executive director of the Philos Project, said on a recent edition of "Charisma Connection" on the Charisma Podcast Network.
"There is a huge, huge problem of anti-Semitism in Europe, and European Jews report on surveys that many, if not most of them, feel afraid from their fellow Europeans. And something that few people are talking about is the return of anti-Semitism right here in the United States. Things are sliding back to the way they used to be. The fact that anti-Semitism, anti-Jewish hostility could be taking root again in a country founded on Judeo-Christian principles is more than a tragedy. It's an outrage."
To help combat anti-Semitism, the Philos Project earlier this year created the #WeResolve campaign to equip Christians with the knowledge and tools to help fight anti-Semitism. #WeResolve provides shareable content, and the Philos Project's goal is to empower individuals, groups, churches and organizations to take tangible action in confronting anti-Semitism around the world.
A shooting in a Pittsburgh synagogue last fall—the deadliest attack on the Jewish community in the United States—took 11 lives. Shooting suspect Robert Bowers said in an FBI affidavit, "I just want to kill Jews."

"We need to stand up, we need to reach out, we need to befriend Jewish communities that are living all around us and feeling the heat," Nicholson says. "And don't think the Jewish people aren't worried. This is, after Israel, the biggest Jewish community in the world. People in the Jewish community are starting to look at one another and say, 'Do we have a future here? Do we have to go to Israel to really live a safe and secure Jewish life?' That's a scary thing."

Pam Tebow: The Motivating and Miraculous Power of a Woman's Influence - SHAWN A. AKERS CHARISMA NEWS

Pam Tebow: The Motivating and Miraculous Power of a Woman's Influence

SHAWN A. AKERS  CHARISMA NEWS
Pam Tebow wants women to know they have the God-given power to influence lives—no matter what age they are. They don't have to listen to the devil's lies any longer.
When her mother turned 70 and questioned the value of her life's accomplishments, Tebow helped change her mother's mindset and convince her of her worth. When her mother died 16 years later, she knew she had made a difference. That's only one story of Tebow's sphere of influence.
While in college, she realized she needed to know and learn God's Word to impact others. Once the Bible became a part of her, she knew she could impact others, including the character of her five children. Former NFL quarterback Tim Tebow, Pam's son, credits his mom's teaching as the key to his success.
The ripple effects of a woman's influence, Pam Tebow says, can extend far beyond anything you can imagine.
"We're all in different seasons of life and have different opportunities," Tebow said on a recent episode of "Charisma Connection." "No matter whether we're young or old, we still have the opportunity, as long as we are still breathing, to have a positive impact on the people around us.
"We all want a reason to wake up and have something to look forward to that's bigger than just starting a job or a class or our home environment. We want a reason to keep on keeping on. The purpose of influence gives us that reason."

As Prophecy Unfolds, Film Shows Side of Israel Many Have Never Seen

SHAWN A. AKERS  CHARISMA NEWS
Filmmaker David Kiern says God is on the move in Israel, and Bible prophecy is being fulfilled every day in the Holy Land. It's something Christians should get very excited about, he says.
In his film I Am Israel, Kiern documents the throngs of Jews who, in recent years, have made aliyah, returning to Israel in fulfillment of Scripture: "The Lord will bring you to the land which your fathers possessed, and you shall possess it" (Deut. 30:5).
The film, Kiern says, also gives a portrayal of an Israel that many who have seen the film say they never knew existed. "Every picture I'd seen of Israel in the media looks very dusty, it looked very dirty, it looked like a place that I wouldn't want to go visit."
But, Kiern says, "We believe this is actually the true Israel. This is the Israel that you don't see in the news, the Israel that the media will not present, which is this beautiful, thriving land of the Bible where prophetic things are happening there today."
When he visited Israel, Kiern says, he realized miraculous things were happening. "During that trip, we really came away with the mission, with the goal of making a movie that would show people what God is doing, this miraculous thing, this very prophetic thing in Israel through the rebirth of the land and the regathering of the Jewish people."

The Unique Way This Orthodox Jew Is Connecting Christians and Jews

SHAWN A. AKERS  CHARISMA NEWS
An Orthodox Jew, Jonathan Feldstein has dedicated his life as a bridge builder between Jews and Christians. As a nonrunner, little did he know that work would involve a marathon.
Through his Genesis 123 Foundation and his project, Run for Zion, Feldstein has devised a unique way to connect Jews and Christians and provide them with the spiritual experience of a lifetime—running through the historic streets of Jerusalem as part of the 2019 Jerusalem Marathon. But runners don't have to be professional. They can either run in 5K or 10K events or simply walk through the ancient roads of the Old City where Jesus walked.
Run for Zion's motto is, "Blessing Israel with Every Step."
"I'm building this up as a Christian experience because if you are a Christian and a runner, this is the most powerful, the most meaningful place you'll ever run," Feldstein said on a recent episode of "Charisma Connection" on the Charisma Podcast Network. "The Bible says that God will bless those who bless Israel, and participating in this event will be a huge blessing.
"As Christians and Jews, we all have in common that we worship the Creator of the universe—the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. In my lifetime, I have seen way too much division between Jews and Christians. Connecting Jews and Christians, especially in these perilous times, is vital."

Bachmann: 'There Is No Greater Proof of God's Word Than the Existence of Israel' - SHAWN A. AKERS CHARISMA NEWS

Bachmann: 'There Is No Greater Proof of God's Word Than the Existence of Israel'

SHAWN A. AKERS  CHARISMA NEWS
Former Congresswoman Michelle Bachmann is passionate about the state of Israel. As a Christian, she longs to see Christ-followers and Jews work together for the peace of Jerusalem.
Bachmann delivered the opening prayer for the Jerusalem Prayer Breakfast (JPB) this week in Orlando. She then took time to speak with Charisma News in an exclusive interview at the JPB, an event she co-chairs.
CN: Why is the Jerusalem Prayer Breakfast so important?
MB: The prayer breakfast is a point really for Christians to awaken their senses to biblical admonition to pray for the peace of Jerusalem and to stand with Jerusalem and to bless Jerusalem. Genesis 12:3 is very clear: Those who bless Israel will be blessed, and those who curse Israel will be cursed.

We've seen it in the United States, even from a political perspective, as President Harry Truman recognized Israel in 1948. The United States, at that time, became the military and economic superpower of the world. Prior to the mid-1940s, America was not the military and economic superpower of the world. So, in many ways, the United States has been put on a tremendous pathway of blessing.
I believe also, too, with President Donald Trump recognizing and declaring Jerusalem as Israel's rightful eternal undivided capital, that also puts the United States on a pathway of blessing. And why? It's because we're agreeing with what the Bible says. It isn't that we have a Republican president who did something right or a Democratic president who did something right. It's the fact that our governmental leaders are agreeing with Scripture. And that is blessing our country. The more we understand Scripture, and the more we understand what our role and obligations are under Scripture, and we walk out those obligations, we will be blessed. It's the combination of belief plus obedience that equals blessing. The Jerusalem Prayer Breakfast to me is about blessing—blessing Israel—and we are blessed.
CN: You said there is no greater proof of God's Word than the existence of Israel. Can you expound upon that?
MB: Scripture foretold that Abram would be made a nation. Then, out of disobedience, they were dispersed—the great diaspora outside of the land—not once but twice. After the second diaspora, they had been away from the land for about 2,000 years until, as the prophets foretold, they would be brought back to the land—the same people to the same land, the same language, the same God, the same faith and the same money, in fact. So, the people came back to the land, and what people don't realize is that even the language was dead at that point. So, the people had to be taught Hebrew once they came back.
This is an unbelievable miracle. The Bible foretold that the modern Jewish state would be rebuilt, and within the lifetimes of many here (at the JPB). That actually happened. We are witnesses to the fulfillment of prophecy. But the prophet Ezekiel prophesied that even Jerusalem would come back into Jewish hands. That is also the fulfillment of prophecy. That didn't happen in 1948. That didn't happen until 51 years ago in 1967. In my lifetime, I have witnessed the fulfillment of Ezekiel's prophecy. When you let that sink in, within our modern era, we are witnesses of prophetic fulfillment. That should not only build up our confidence and faith, it should build up our appreciation for the Bible.
As the authoritative Word of God, the Bible should be even more trustworthy. The Bible isn't done. There are still more events to come. They will happen as they are prophesied, including the Second Coming of Messiah, Jesus Christ. We know that is going to happen. Because of that, that should cause us to live our lives differently, to view God differently and to view His Word differently. That's really what this is about—recognizing, appreciating and understanding how true and trustworthy God's Word is. Israel is the greatest miracle of the Bible, and it is the greatest indicator that the Bible is true.
CN: What are the best weapons we have against anti-Semitism right now?
MB: Obviously the best weapon we have is the Word of God. We must understand that the attacks of anti-Semitism have a Satanic base, going all the way back to the Garden of Eden. There's always been this war between God and Satan. Satan hates Israel because Israel is the blessing to the world. From Israel comes the Messiah. God's plan begins and ends in Jerusalem. That's why Satan has this continual desire to kill Jews, to destroy the Jewish state, to destroy the Jewish way of life so that the blessings for the world are destroyed.
If there is no Israel, there are no Jewish people. If there is no Jerusalem, there is no Jewish way of life. There is no capacity to bless the nations of the world. Satan's plan would be to stop that. Today, unfortunately, you have people questioning if there really is a God, Current statistics say that 1 out of 4 people has no faith at all. We're going in the wrong direction.
As believers, there is more reason to have faith today than at any time in history because we have seen more fulfillment of prophecy, of the Word of God. Some people are afraid of that word "prophecy." They think it sounds weird. It's not weird. It is just the foretelling of what God is going to do, what God said He would do. We have lived long enough to see the fulfillment of that Word. Not just to appreciate from a historical perspective, but from a current perspective, we are living it.
It's also interesting to realize that the prophets wrote that they longed to live in the days you and I are living in. Ezekiel, Jeremiah, the great prophets—they were able to foretell these days that are upon us. We get to live these days that are upon us. That should give us greater joy of what is yet to come.
CN: JPB Director Albert Veksler said when Jews and Christians work together, history will be made. What are your thoughts on that?
MB: That's exactly right. (Thursday morning,) Albert gave a wonderful brief history of Jews and Christians coming together just in modern times. I think we've seen this from Christ's coming the first time. We have seen Jews and Christians work together and not work together. We've seen both sides of it. There is no question that in God's sovereignty, in his timetable, He chose to bring Jews and Christians together for a reason. Look at the Old and New Testament, how they perfectly work together. It is a part of seeing the fulfillment of the Old Testament prophets and what is yet to come.
CN: What can churches do to reach out to Jews to make the relationship better going forward?
MB: The first thing is love. I think Scripture is very clear. For Christians, our job is to provoke our Jewish brothers unto jealousy. That sounds like a weird thing. What the Bible is saying there is that when we demonstrate our love for God and our love for His Word, the Jewish people will want that, too. They want a close relationship with God. They want a close relationship with the Word. After all, it is their story. When they see us loving God and being loved by God, loving His Word and loving the Jewish people—because that's what the Bible calls us to do—I think that is the demonstration that transforms individuals.
We know that when Jesus left to be with the Father, He left his Holy Spirit here on this earth. He said, 'I go away so the Spirit can be here.' He said you can do more now that My Spirit is here.
Why would we doubt that? Why would we doubt the power of His Spirit here on this earth? His Spirit is what transforms me; it's what transforms you; and His Spirit will be what draws Jewish people back to God. When I say that, I'm not doubting their faith. I don't say that in any way to cast dispersion on any Jewish person that they are secondary or inferior, because they are not. But it is interesting; Romans teaches us about Abraham, that Abraham believed God and it was accounted to him as righteousness. The Abrahamic formula is the same for every human being through all of history. When we believe, that is the righteousness. It is not good works, it is belief. Abraham believed; we can believe. The story is the same for Jews as it is for Christians as it is for atheists and Muslims. If we believe the God of the Bible, we are saved. That is the Good News, and that is for all.
