Retail Layoffs Are 92 Percent Higher In 2019 – And Now Even Wal-Mart Is “Quietly Closing Stores” - Michael Snyder

Posted: 31 Mar 2019  Michael Snyder

Just like we witnessed during the last recession, major retailers are laying off tens of thousands of workers, and it looks like this will be the worst year for store closings in all of U.S. history.  Many are referring to this as “the retail apocalypse”, and without a doubt this is one of the toughest stretches for retailers that we have ever seen.  But many believe that what we have witnessed so far is just the beginning.  After all, if retailers are struggling this much now, how bad will things be once the next recession really gets rolling?

Of course the truth is that things have been rocky for the retail industry for quite a few years, but the numbers are telling us that this crisis is really starting to accelerate.

According to Challenger, Gray & Christmas, retail layoffs were up a whopping 92 percent in January and February compared to the same period a year ago.  The following comes from NBC News
More than 41,000 people have lost their jobs in the retail industry so far this year — a 92 percent spike in layoffs since the same time last year, according to a new report.
And the layoffs continue to mount, with JCPenney announcing this week it would be closing 18 stores in addition to three previously announced closures, as part of a “standard annual review.”
Yes, competition from Internet commerce is hurting the traditional retail industry, but it certainly doesn’t explain a 92 percent increase.

And very few retailers have been able to avoid this downsizing trend.  At this point, even the largest retailer in the entire country has begun “quietly closing stores”
Walmart is closing at least 11 US stores across eight states.
The stores include one Walmart Supercenter in Lafayette, Louisiana, and Walmart Neighborhood Market stores in Arizona, California, Kansas, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, and Washington.
For decades, Wal-Mart has been expanding extremely aggressively.

They have plenty of cash, and so the only way that it would make sense for them to close stores is if they anticipated that we are heading into a recession.

Here is a list of the addresses where Wal-Mart stores are closing
6085 W. Chandler Blvd., Chandler, Arizona
3900 W. Ina Road, Tucson, Arizona
1600 Saratoga Ave., San Jose, California
712 N. Western Ave., Liberal, Kansas
1229 NE. Evangeline Trwy., Lafayette, Louisiana
3603 Broad River Road, Columbia, South Carolina
1757 W. Andrew Johnson Hwy., Morristown, Tennessee
2501 University Commons Way, Knoxville, Tennessee
7000 Iron Bridge Road, North Chesterfield, Virginia
2864 Virginia Beach Blvd., Virginia Beach, Virginia
7809 NE. Vancouver Plaza Dr., Vancouver, Washington

Of course Wal-Mart is in far better shape than almost everyone else in the industry. One of Wal-Mart’s key competitors, Shopko, has just announced that they will be shutting down all of their stores
Shopko will liquidate its assets and close all of its remaining locations by mid-June.
The company was unable to find a buyer for the retail business and will begin winding down its operations beginning this week, the company said in statement released Monday. The decision to liquidate will bring an end to the brick-and-mortar business that began in 1962 with one location in Green Bay, Wisconsin.
And personally I was very saddened to learn that Lifeway Christian Bookstores has also decided to close all their brick and mortar stores
Lifeway Christian Bookstores announced last week it would be closing the doors of all 170 brick and mortar stores, in a pivot to focusing on digital and e-commerce.
“The decision to close our local stores is a difficult one,” said Lifeway Chief Executive Officer Brad Waggoner. “While we had hoped to keep some stores open, current market projections show this is no longer a viable option.”
Whenever I do an article like this, I always have some readers that try to convince me that this is only happening because of the growth of Internet retailing.

And yes, Internet retailing has been growing, but it still accounts for less than 10 percent of all U.S. retail sales.  In addition, it is important to point out that Internet retailers had a very disappointing holiday season just like brick and mortar retailers did.

Ultimately, the truth is that the U.S. economy has been steadily slowing down in recent months.

During the months of December, January and February, the amount of stuff being moved around the country by truck, rail and air was lower than during all of those same months a year earlier.  The following comes from Wolf Richter
Now it’s the third month in a row, and the red flag is getting more visible and a little harder to ignore about the goods-based economy: Freight shipment volume in the US across all modes of transportation – truck, rail, air, and barge – in February fell 2.1% from February a year ago, according to the Cass Freight Index, released today. The three months in a row of year-over-year declines are the first such declines since the transportation recession of 2015 and 2016.
I have a feeling that when we get the final numbers for March that they will show that this streak has now extended to four months.

Right now, unsold goods are starting to pile up in U.S. warehouses at a rate that we haven’t seen since the last recession.  Many retailers that are barely clinging to life will simply not survive if economic conditions continue to deteriorate.

Unfortunately, it appears that things are only going to get rougher for the U.S. economy in the months ahead.

So more retail workers are going to get laid off, more stores are going to close, and there are going to be a lot more stories about our ongoing “retail apocalypse” in the mainstream media.

Unplanned, the new movie that tells the true story of former abortion clinic director Abby Johnson, took 5th place at the box office on the movie's opening weekend.
The film by writer-directors Chuck Konzelman and Cary Solomon, which is distributed by PureFlix, was estimated to have earned $6,110,000 through Mar. 31 after three days of release, according to the website Box Office Mojo.
The film opened in 1,059 theaters across the country on Friday.
It was the second-best opening weekend for a PureFlix film behind God's Not Dead 2 ($7.6 million), according to The Hollywood Reporter
The movie stars Ashley Bratcher (90 Minutes in Heaven, War Room), Brooks Ryan (Overexposed) and veteran film and TV actress Robia Scott.
As CBN News reported, the film depicts Johnson's emotional decision to quit her job after watching an abortion via ultrasound.
"It's a little surreal, if I'm honest, to watch someone play out the worst version of yourself in a film," Johnson told CBN News during an interview on the set of the film.
"But it's also just a good reminder that God can literally use anything from our past and use it for his glory and use it for his kingdom," she added.
Solomon and Konzelman, who also wrote "God's Not Dead" and "God's Not Dead 2," believe with the passing of radical abortion laws in New York and other states, "Unplanned" is the right film "for such a time as this."
"This is sort of our last wakeup call I think politically because these laws are being enacted now," said Konzelman. "We as Americans, as people of faith. One of two things is going to happen. We're either going to rise up and say this is wrong or we're going to become accustomed to it and it's going to become the new norm."

Tornadoes - Now Think On This by Steve Martin

Tornadoes
Steve Martin

“And the Spirit and the bride say, "Come!" And let him who hears say, "Come!" And let him who thirsts come. Whoever desires, let him take the water of life freely.” (Revelation 22:17, NKJV)

Fifty-one ago, on May 15, 1968, an F5 tornado tore through Charles City, Iowa, injuring 450, killing 13 and causing an estimated $30 million in damage (in 1968 dollars.) Living just 44 miles to the south at the time, in Cedar Falls, Iowa, I remember the devastation and heartbreak. I was in 7th grade, and just glad it wasn’t us, though it very easily could have been.

Tornados are not fun. They quickly come and quickly move on, often leaving behind years of rebuilding and restoring of property lost, and lives that may not be.

Fast forward to today, while sitting on our home front porch swing, at our Charlotte, North Carolina home on a very pleasant Sunday afternoon spring day, I was resting a bit from the busy activity done earlier for our congregation. I dozed off a bit. Not uncommon these days!

Between moments of light sleep and some prayer, I envisioned tornadoes popping up across the United States map. Here, there. In many places, I could see these destructive forces all across the land, in various and numerous places. Even in places where they normally don’t occur.

Was this the Lord causing this supernatural action? Was this the devil? Back to this in a moment.

It is common practice for our local and national weathermen (and women) to state that “Mother Nature” is causing upsetting occurences whenever something out of the norm comes into the weather pattern. Be it tornadoes, hurricanes, snowstorms, or other fierce precipitation – “she” gets the credit or is the reason for the season.

If one believes the Bible as I do, there is no “Mother Nature”. But there is Father God, the Creator. Being He oversees what goes on, whether He brings it on Himself or permits the satanic forces to act for His purposes to be revealed, my eyes are going to stay fixed on Him.

In the Old Testament, we know that the Lord God brought the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah. In Genesis 19:24-25 it clearly states, “Then the Lord rained brimstone and fire on Sodom and Gomorrah, from the Lord out of the heavens. So He overthrew those cities, all the plain, all the inhabitants of the cities, and what grew on the ground.” (NKJV)

He also will send His wrath again, as it clearly states in Revelation 6:12-17 (NKJV), “I looked when He opened the sixth seal, and behold, there was a great earthquake; and the sun became black as sackcloth of hair, and the moon became like blood. And the stars of heaven fell to the earth, as a fig tree drops its late figs when it is shaken by a mighty wind.

Then the sky receded as a scroll when it is rolled up, and every mountain and island was moved out of its place. And the kings of the earth, the great men, the rich men, the commanders, the mighty men, every slave and every free man, hid themselves in the caves and in the rocks of the mountains, and said to the mountains and rocks, "Fall on us and hide us from the face of Him who sits on the throne and from the wrath of the Lamb! For the great day of His wrath has come, and who is able to stand?" (emphasis mine)

The same God, from the beginning through the end in the Word, both in the Old and New Testaments, rules and reigns, and judges that which is evil in His sight.

On other occasions Jesus, God in the flesh, the Son of Father God, rebuked the destructive forces of the weather, as it so happened in Luke 8:23-25 (NKJV), “But as they sailed He (Jesus, Yeshua) fell asleep. And a windstorm came down on the lake, and they were filling with water and were in jeopardy. And they came to Him and awoke Him, saying, "Master, Master, we are perishing!"

Then He arose and rebuked the wind and the raging of the water. And they ceased, and there was a calm. But He said to them, "Where is your faith?"

Our Father in heaven is in control of all things, always, and in all places. I may not know every time if His judgment or His permissive will is being enacted, but I know He is in control.

So back to the “vision” I saw in my semi-sleep state. Were these tornadoes I saw of the Lord, or the devil? Were they for good, or bad?

Personally, I think both.

The Lord’s word says that in these final days He is going to be shaking the heavens and the earth. He even says it will be all things that are shaken, to reveal that which alone will stand.

“See that you do not refuse Him who speaks. For if they did not escape who refused Him who spoke on earth, much more shall we not escape if we turn away from Him who speaks from heaven, whose voice then shook the earth; but now He has promised, saying, "Yet once more I shake not only the earth, but also heaven."  Now this, "Yet once more," indicates the removal of those things that are being shaken, as of things that are made, that the things which cannot be shaken may remain.

Therefore, since we are receiving a kingdom which cannot be shaken, let us have grace, by which we may serve God acceptably with reverence and godly fear. For our God is a consuming fire.” (Hebrews 12:25-29, NKJV)

In the natural, and the spiritual, the Lord is the One shaking things up. He is going to shake up His Body, the Church, to tear down that which man has produced over the centuries, setting in place their rules and regulations, not His. And trust me, our congregations and synagogues have a lot of junk in them that needs to be taken down and out.

And He is going to shake up and destroy those who have shaken their fists at God, denouncing His purposes and plans, believing they are the ones who rule as kings and queens of the universe, and rulers of their own destinies. They will in time have to think again.

So, are the tornadoes in the “vision” I experienced natural or spiritual? I tend to believe they are both.

God the Father, Jesus Christ His Son, and the Third Person of the Trinity, Holy Spirit, are on the move. They are performing their acts, both in the natural and the spiritual, out of their eternal love, to draw all mankind unto Them. They are shaking things up, as if through tornadoes and other forces that get our attention.  Hopefully, these will wake many people up - both in the Church to get them out of their slumber and the world out of their pride and haughtiness.

Some will need a natural shaking to happen before they will look up. Others will need a spiritual act of God in their life before they will look up.

Whatever it takes, we want the Lord to save His people, reveal His plans, and bring about His eternal Kingdom in our lives.

Even so, come Lord Jesus, come.

Shalom and ahava (peace and love in Hebrew).
