Savage Enemy: How ISIS Wants to Start Armageddon

Savage Enemy: How ISIS Wants to Start Armageddon

ISIS, or the Islamic State, is in the news every day. The brutal terrorist army burst on the scene in 2014 when it gobbled up huge swaths of territory in Iraq and Syria.
Today, ISIS controls a land area the size of Great Britain and is the wealthiest jihadist organization in the world.
As ISIS expands, it brings with it chaos and savagery everywhere it goes, beheading its enemies, destroying cultural artifacts and treasures, and displacing millions of Christians and other non-Muslims.
Despite all that we do know about ISIS, the terror group remains shrouded in mystery. Who are they? What do they believe? Why do they hate America?
Robert Spencer, a leading terror expert, answers these questions and more while exposing the blood-drenched history and mysterious inner workings of the Islamic State in his latest book, The Complete Infidel's Guide to ISIS. The book provides an essential primer to comprehending one of the world's most dangerous enemies.
The brutality of ISIS is unquestioned; what remains misunderstood is their strength. Spencer expertly exposes deceptive propaganda and Western misunderstanding of an ever-present threat in an easily accessible and digestible format.
ISIS attracts staggering numbers of followers and commits unspeakable acts of violence. His book exposes the message behind the ever-cryptic ISIS machine, giving us a deeper look into the details of their terror campaign and unprecedented access to ISIS insiders.
In The Complete Infidel's Guide to ISIS, Spencer reveals:
  • The significance of ISIS declaring itself a "caliphate and why that's an especially dangerous sign for the West.
  • The ISIS timetable for conquering Rome by 2020 and witnessing Israel's fall beginning in 2022.
  • How the Islamic State is working toward starting the battle of Armageddon now.
  • Why beheading victims remain calm in recruitment videos.
  • Why ISIS cares about health care.
With its social media presence, cyber knowledge, and false promises of glory, ISIS has a presence on the world stage unlike anything we've encountered before. Spencer's sharp, in-your-face assessment of America's newest enemy affirms they cannot be ignored any longer.
Robert Spencer will appear on The 700 Club, Wednesday Sept. 2, to discuss these points and more. Check your local listings for show times.

Muslim Clerics Incite Against Jewish Holidays

Muslim Clerics Incite Against Jewish Holidays

Wednesday, September 02, 2015 |  Israel Today Staff
Israeli media is warning of increased Palestinian violence during the upcoming Jewish High Holy Days in September and October.
During Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur and the week-long Sukkot (Feast of Tabernacles), a great many Jews congregate publicly, especially at the Western Wall.
This year, some of those holidays coincide with Muslim holidays and Palestinian nationalist memorials. Yom Kippur and the Muslim feast of Eid al-Adha falls on the same day, and the anniversary of the eruption of the Second Intifada is during Sukkot.
If the past is any indicator, the coinciding of Jewish and Muslim holidays spells trouble, particularly in and around Jerusalem.
Already, Muslim clerics are working their flocks up into a frenzy over what they term the impending Jewish “invasion” of the Temple Mount. From the Israeli perspective, this is nothing short of incitement. Jewish groups always go up to the Temple Mount over Sukkot as it is a biblically mandated practice.
But the head of the Koranic Academy of Al-Aqsa Mosque, Nashach Bakhirat, said in an Arabic broadcast in Israel: “The Jewish festivals are ominous for Muslims and for the Al-Aqsa Mosque because at that time Jewish religious extremists will perpetrate attacks against us.”
Sheikh Kamal Khatib, leader of the Islamic Movement in Israel, accused the Jews of seeking to defile the Al-Aqsa Mosque during the Jewish holidays. Khatib further charged Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas of conspiring with Israel to “Judaize” the city of Jerusalem.
Ekrima Sa’id Sabri, former Grand Mufti of Jerusalem and head of the Islamic Council, went even further, claiming that Jewish groups visiting the Temple Mount during Sukkot were “trying to implement their scheme to build a [Jewish] temple in place of the Al-Aqsa Mosque.”
As easily rebutted as these accusations might be, they are consistently effective in whipping up the Muslim masses against Israel’s Jews.

Planned Parenthood Vendor: Intact Fetuses 'Just Fell Out'

Planned Parenthood Vendor:

Intact Fetuses 'Just Fell Out'

It's the ninth in a series of pro-life videos and it focuses on a Planned Parenthood baby parts vendor, Advanced Bioscience Resources, Inc. (ABR).
The undercover video from the Center for Medical Progress features Perrin Larton, the Procurememnt Manager for ABR, and Cate Dyer, the CEO of StemExpress, which is ABR's rival company.
"I literally have had women come in and they'll go in the O.R. and they're back out in 3 minutes, and I'm going, 'What's going on?' Oh yeah, the fetus was already in the vaginal canal whenever we put her in the stirrups, it just fell out," Larton explains in the video, describing situations where enough degree of cervical dilation has happened to procure an intact fetus.
When the first of the undercover videos surfaced, Planned Parenthood CEO Cecile Richards denied the abortion giant received any profit off of abortions.
"There are no financial benefits to the clinic," she said on an ABC News. "Absolutely. Look, we look forward to the facts coming out."
Then, in an August 27 letter to Congress, Richards admitted that ABR pays Planned Parenthood $60 "per tissue specimen."
"We now know from Cecile Richards' letter that $60 per collected tissue specimen is what will 'get a toe in' to harvest baby parts at Planned Parenthood Pacific Southwest," CMP Project Lead David Daleiden wrote.
Multiple tissue specimens can come from a single fetus, and $60 per specimen can quickly add up to hundreds of extra dollars in revenue per abortion.
In a statement on Tuesday, Planned Parenthood officials called on the Center for Medical Progress to share the unedited full-length version of the ninth video.
"The video released today is not about Planned Parenthood. Staff from two independent health care firms that work with medical providers and research institutions appear to discuss their policies and practices," Eric Ferrero, vice president of communication at the Planned Parenthood Federation of America said. "Multiple times in this video, staff from independent health care firms appear to say that Planned Parenthood is not interested in any financial gain and adheres to ethical standards."
"In the twisted world of baby parts trafficking from Planned Parenthood abortion clinics, there are few unbroken rules," Daleiden said.
The sale or purchase of human fetal tissue is a federal felony punishable by up to 10 years in prison or a fine of up to $500,000.
"After the serious admissions in Planned Parenthood's letter to Congress last week, it is imperative for lawmakers and law enforcement to act decisively to determine the full extent of Planned Parenthood and their proxies' lawbreaking, hold them accountable, and stop the taxpayer funding of these barbaric atrocities against humanity," he said.

What America will offer Israel after the nuclear deal

What America will offer Israel after the nuclear deal

Extending aid by a decade, R&D collaboration, F-35 strike fighters among measures eyed for heightened US-Israel security cooperation; ‘Band-Aids on a hemorrhage,’ says one critic

WASHINGTON (JTA) – The moment the Iran nuclear deal becomes law, as seems increasingly likely given growing congressional support for the agreement, the focus of the US-Israel conversation will shift to the question of what’s next.

What more will Washington do to mitigate the Iranian threat and reassure Israel and other regional allies?

For starters, President Barack Obama seems ready to offer an array of security enhancements. Among them are accelerating and increasing defense assistance to Israel over the next decade; increasing the US military presence in the Middle East; stepping up the enforcement of non-nuclear related Iran sanctions; enhancing US interdiction against disruptive Iranian activity in the region; and increasing cooperation on missile defense.

There also will be an emphasis on keeping any of the tens of billions of dollars to which Iran will gain unfettered access through the sanctions relief from reaching Iran’s proxies.

Adam Szubin, the US Treasury undersecretary charged with enforcing sanctions, made targeting Hezbollah a focus of his meetings with Israeli officials last week, JTA has learned.

Once some nuclear-related sanctions on Iran are lifted – should Iran meet the requirements in the deal on nuclear restrictions – Washington will allocate greater resources to focusing on other sanctions unaffected by the agreement, including those related to backing terrorism, a senior US official told JTA.

“We have a lot of that same personnel and resources we can devote to US-specific sanctions on Iran – and not only Iran,” the official said.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, not wanting to be seen as endorsing the deal while there’s still a chance Congress could scuttle it, has directed Israeli officials not to engage with US officials on what could be done after the deal is in place. The Israeli envoy to Washington, Ron Dermer, has said that Israel would be ready for discussions only after options to kill the agreement formally known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action are exhausted.

“We appreciate the support that we have gotten from this administration, from this president, to enhance our security,” Dermer told USA Today in a July 27 interview. “And the discussion that we’ll have about the day after, we’ll have to leave to the day after.”

Congress has until Sept. 17 to decide whether to allow the deal to proceed.

The American Israel Public Affairs Committee, which is leading the opposition to the deal, argued in a memo distributed Monday that US pledges of post-deal security enhancements are inadequate.

“The administration has tried to reassure those concerned by the dangerous consequences of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) in two ways: by pledging increased support for Israel and our Gulf allies and by vowing that it will strictly enforce the deal,” said the memo, which is headlined “Promises Cannot Fix a Bad Deal.” “Neither approach will repair the deal’s fatal flaw: it legitimizes Iran as a nuclear-threshold state in 15 years.”

Obama in an interview Monday with the Forward attached urgency to confronting Hezbollah and other Iranian proxies.

Speaking of Israel, he said, “We can do even more to enhance the unprecedented military and intelligence cooperation that we have with them, and to see, are there additional capabilities that Israel may be able to use to prevent Hezbollah, for example, from getting missiles.”

The emphasis on Hezbollah was appropriate, said Uzi Arad, Netanyahu’s national security adviser from 2009 to 2011.

“The president on sensing a degree of urgency with Hezbollah sooner rather than later is absolutely right,” Arad said, noting the group’s role as an Iranian proxy in helping prop up the Assad regime in Syria. “It relates to the need to uproot and to neutralize the violent and anti-American and anti-Israel radical group. It is a matter of urgent joint concern.”

Arad outlined a number of areas that would enhance Israel’s sense of security in a post-deal environment, including:

* Maintaining Israel’s qualitative military edge in the region, even as the United States enhances the military capabilities of Arab Persian Gulf allies that, similar to Israel, will be seeking reassurances in the wake of the Iran deal;

* Enhancing joint missile defense programs;

* Extending the defense assistance memorandum of understanding, which since 2008 has provided Israel with an average of $3 billion in defense assistance per year, for another 10 years (it’s set to expire in 2018), and delivering promised F-35 advanced fighter aircraft to Israel;

* Enhancing joint civilian scientific research and development;

* Delivering advanced bunker-buster bombs to maintain Israel’s deterrent edge should Iran cheat on or abandon the deal. “Israel should be given this special kind of ordnance so it could have a more effective military option in case of Iranian violations of the agreement,” Arad said, arguing that this would strengthen the agreement by creating a disincentive for Iran to cheat.

* A “declaratory” component emphasizing US longstanding commitments to Israel.

* Making clear that the US effort to stop the expansion of Islamist terrorism and extremism targets Iranian activities as well as those associated with the Islamic State terrorist group.

Obama touched on many of these issues in a letter he sent to Rep. Jerrold Nadler, D-New York, on Aug. 19.

“It is imperative that, even as we effectively cut off Iran’s pathways to a nuclear weapon through the implementation of the JCPOA, we take steps to ensure that we and our allies and our partners are more capable than ever to deal with Iran’s destabilizing activities and support for terrorism,” Obama said in the letter, which was first obtained by The New York Times.

The president specified four areas where cooperation would be enhanced: extending defense assistance for a decade, joint missile defense research, joint efforts to improve tunnel detection (following the advances made by Hamas in its 2014 war with Israel), and “strengthening our efforts to confront conventional and asymmetric threats.”

The letter persuaded Nadler to back the deal and should be a salve to Israeli security officials, said Dan Arbell, a former deputy chief of mission at the Israeli Embassy in Washington.

“If I were an Israeli bureaucrat right now in any of the related areas working around this, what the president provides in his letter is a pretty thorough list, which I think the Israeli defense establishment would be happy with,” said Arbell, who now lectures at American University.

Persian Gulf allies would want the reassurances that Israel is receiving as well as specific assurances of assistance in keeping Iran from meddling in Arab affairs, said Michael Eisenstadt, a longtime officer in the US Army Reserve who served in the Middle East.

Even with such assurances, Eisenstadt said, Gulf allies would remain concerned that the deal enhances Iran’s stature.

“Weapons are Band-Aids on a hemorrhage,” said Eisenstadt, now a fellow at the Washington Institute for Near East Policy. “From the point of view of our allies in the region, we’ve contributed to a lot of the problem” by advancing the Iran deal.

Dear Friend,
In the Bible we read that Nehemiah was discouraged and distressed because the walls of Jerusalem had been broken down and its gates had been burned with fire. He sat down and wept and mourned for his nation—and he cried out to the God of heaven.
God heard his prayers and used him to lead the people to rebuild those broken-down walls. They were greatly outnumbered by their enemies and facing opposition and vicious threats. They responded by praying and seeking God, and they went to work rebuilding what had been torn down, even holding their weapons in their hands to protect themselves while they worked. In a miraculously short time—52 days—they rebuilt the walls and hope was restored.
America's walls of biblical morality are crumbling. Almost everyone I speak with is distraught over the direction our nation is taking. Christianity and our religious freedoms are under siege. Progressives and secularists want to see God removed from everything and to burn every gate of protection.
We can't sit idle. Like Nehemiah we need to take a bold stand. We need to cry out to God on behalf of our nation. Nehemiah confessed the sins and failures of the people, "including myself and my father's family," and repented. He prayed, "We have acted very wickedly toward you" (Nehemiah 1:6–7, NIV).
I believe that it is going to take the church of Jesus Christ standing up for righteousness, shoulder to shoulder, to make a difference in this country. I do not believe that Republicans or Democrats or any other party can turn this nation around, but I do have hope. God hears the prayers of His people, and walls can be rebuilt.
I will be devoting my time in 2016 to go to every state in our country—all 50—to hold a prayer rally, to preach the gospel, and to challenge believers to take a stand and take action. We are calling it the Decision America Tour, and we will begin announcing dates for specific cities on the tour in October. Be watching for that. My purpose for going is to call the church and Christians to pray, to vote, and to engage.
I'm not going to endorse specific candidates, but I believe it's vitally important that we vote for those who best support biblical and godly principles. Christians should be going to the polls and voting in record numbers. Your vote does matter. Millions of evangelical Christians did not vote in the last presidential election. If Christians continue to leave voting to others, there may be no turning this country around. The first political debate that aired recently had the highest viewership in cable TV history—24 million watching. I think this is evidence of the dissatisfaction with Washington and shows that voters are paying attention.
During the Decision America Tour, I want to urge Christians not only to vote but also to engage by running for political office at all levels—local, state, and federal. We need Christian judges, Christian assembly members, and Christian mayors. We need Christian clerks of court, school board members, governors, and, of course, senators and representatives. Most importantly on this tour, I am calling on those who follow the name of Jesus Christ to do as God's Word says: "If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray, and seek My face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and will heal their land" (2 Chronicles 7:14, MEV).
The only hope for America is to have hearts changed—and Christ can do that. On the 50-state Decision America Tour, I will be preaching the only message that has the power to bring real and lasting change—the gospel. In every state next year, I will preach that Jesus Christ, the Son of God, took our sins to the cross, shed His blood, and died on the cross to pay the penalty for the sins of mankind, and God raised Him to life. I will be giving an invitation for people to repent of sin and turn to Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior of their lives.
The success of the Decision America Tour depends on prayer. Just as Nehemiah's people were threatened, this effort will be under attack.
But just as Nehemiah found, it is worth it. I don't believe Christians should be shrinking back. America is at a crossroads, and I believe we should take every opportunity to stand up for the things of God and His Word.
The strategy that the Lord gave Nehemiah was for each family to begin repairing the portion of the wall nearest their own home. And in our day we can begin rebuilding the wall around our own homes as well. How? Start a prayer group in your own community to pray that our nation would turn back to God—just a few friends praying together every week can make a huge impact. Join your state's prayer team and pray for the Decision America Tour and for our nation. Support Christians running for office in your city and state. Engage right where you are to make a difference for Christ.
Thank you for standing with us at the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association to take the gospel message to as many people as possible through radio, the Internet, evangelistic Crusades both here at home and around the world, and now the Decision America Tour.

A Prophetic Vision of Two Rivers and a Strong Warning

Two rivers flowing into one
Two rivers flowing into one (iStock photo )
In July I received a vision from the Lord concerning polluted waters and bad fruit. Before I share that vision, I would like to say that I love the church! I'm passionate about the church, and I'm more convinced than ever that the church is God's answer for the world.
Having said that, it is also important to recognize that we aren't where we should be, and the Lord is answering with a pure move of His Spirit in our day.
I will attempt to share this vision just as I received it and not add any of my own opinions to it.
The Lord and I were together in a great valley that stretched several miles in each direction from where we were standing. The Lord led me to the banks of this river and it was a relatively wide river with rapidly moving water. As we approached the banks, I began to notice a horrible smell coming from the water. Once we reached the edge of the bank, the smell was overpowering me and it wreaked like severely stagnant water and when I looked down into it, there was no life in this water other than tadpoles and leeches, but no vegetation or fish.
What I was seeing didn't make sense to me because this was an active, rapidly moving river and should have been full of life. I asked the Lord how this water could be stagnant but yet moving so rapidly. The Lord spoke to me and said that this water wasn't stagnant; it was polluted.
He then took me up the river to the mouth of it. The river was flowing out of the side of a mountain. Located at the corner of the valley and the mountain there was a very large factory. It was surrounded by a very high fence with razor wire across the top. The large door had a sign written across the top of the door that read "The Modern Church."
At all four corners were high watch towers with armed guards on each of them. The Lord spoke to me and said that these watchmen were looking for an enemy, but I thought it wasn't the enemy. I asked the Lord who they considered their enemy and He said that they were watching for any man or woman that would dare challenge the practices of the modern church.
He then told me that they were highly trained character assassins and they would stop at nothing to silence the voices of those that would speak out and challenge carnal practices of the modern church system.
We went behind the factory where the river ran beside it and there was a concrete ramp leading down into the water. There were people dumping barrels of substances into this water. Each barrel was labeled. I saw labels like: humanism, universalism, carnality, lust, sexual immorality, compromise, greed, fear of man.
He then led me down the river and we came upon a large fruit field. We crossed a bridge and approached the trees. These trees were some of the greenest trees I've ever seen, but when I approached them they were either void of any fruit, or the fruit was molded, rotten and infested by insects. The Lord told me that these trees were meant to bear good fruit, but the roots were tapped into contaminated and polluted water.
We then moved further down the river to a village. There were people walking around this village. The people were very trendy and modern in their style and dress. I walked up to a man with his back to me and touched his shoulder. He turned around and I stepped back because his eyes were whited out and he was zombified. Death was in his face. I began to declare to him that he was dead, but that I could lead him to life. He began to defend his position with all sorts of philosophies and nothing I said was impacting him. I asked the Lord why the man wouldn't hear me and He said because "he wouldn't endure sound doctrine." The Lord then told me that this man was the product of people eating rotten fruit and drinking from polluted waters.
The part that stood out the most about this encounter with this man was the fact that he was utterly convinced he was alive. He couldn't be convinced of his condition.
From here, the Lord then took me into the mountain where the river began. He took me past the factory and into a cave where the water was coming out. He took me up into the mountain and the water flowing through this mountain was the clearest, most beautiful water I've ever seen. This water was living and vibrant. The Lord spoke to me that this river was the pure movement of His Spirit. He told me that this river was where His power and anointing was found. He said that many people are looking for Him in the "valley of man," but He wasn't found there. He was found in the hill of the Lord.
He told me that He was issuing an invitation to His people to come and flow in this river. He said that even though the invitation was to all of His ministers, many wouldn't tap into it because of what was going to be required to flow there.
He then gave me the following requirements to stay in the pure river:
  • Only say what He says with no fear of man
  • Honor Him and love Him more than the praise of man
  • Abstain from sexual immorality
  • Never prostitute the gift He has given me for money
  • Stay humble
  • Always be a good husband to my wife and a good father to my children
He said if I would maintain these things in my life and ministry, He would allow me to flow in His pure river. He then said if I violate any of these things then I would no longer be able to stay in the mountain of God.
He then quoted Psalm 24:3-5, which says: "Who may ascend the hill of the Lord? Who may stand in His holy place? He who has clean hands and a pure heart; who has not lifted up his soul unto vanity, nor sworn deceitfully. He will receive the blessing from the Lord, and righteousness from the God of his salvation."
He said that many ministers begin their ministries in the clean river, but after time, find themselves in the valley. He warned me strongly that once you go down to the valley, though it's possible to make your way back to the mountain, it is almostimpossible because many times it will require public repentance and public humility. Many have trouble dealing with their pride to do that.
My prayer in this hour is that the true church of Jesus Christ would rise up with clean hands and pure hearts. There are two rivers flowing. Let's decide to flow where He is flowing.

Mathematician: Shmittah Market Trends Point to "Really Bad" Crash in September

Mathematician: Shmittah Market Trends Point to "Really Bad" Crash in September

“On this year of jubilee each of you shall return to his own property.” (Leviticus 25:13)
One mathematician is looking to the Bible by using information gleaned about the Shmittah cycle to predict trends in international stock markets.
Thomas Pound is an educator and mathematician with a passion for statistical analysis in the financial arena. Several years ago, he corresponded with a financial advisor who was using a decennial analysis to determine which years were optimum for investor returns. According to the theory behind decennial analysis, which was first proposed in the book “Irrational Exuberance” by Yale Economics Professor Robert Shiller, years ending in the number eight yielded better returns than other years. Years that ended in seven were even less lucrative than normal.
Armed with 144 years of market data going back to 1871, Pound set out to test the validity of this theory. As Pound explained to Breaking Israel News, “Being a statistician, if somebody makes a claim, then statistically, it should hold up.”
After performing an Analysis of Variance significance (ANOVA) test, Pound discovered that there was some basis for the financial advisor’s strategy of avoiding investing in years that ended in seven. It gave him a statistical advantage of 100 base points, with years not ending in seven averaging an annual return of 10.19 percent, compared to an overall average of 9.04 percent.
All would have been well and good, however the theory also advised investing heavily during years that end in the number eight. Pound sought out to learn why and the results were divinely enlightening.
Rosh Hashana Store on Israel365 - Shop Now!
Similar to the decennial theory, the Shmittah cycle takes place in a set of seven years. People who follow the market recognize the years 1973, 1980, 1987, 2000 and 2007 as years which the market saw a significant collapse.
The biggest ever single-day stock market crash occurred on September 29, 2008, when the Dow Jones Index crashed, losing $1.2 trillion in market value. This day also happened to be the day before Rosh Hashana, the Jewish New Year, signalling the end of the Shmittah cycle.
After a friend told him about a theory linking the seven year Sabbatical year to the stock market, Pound deepened his research. With little knowledge of the Shmittah cycle and expertise in statistical and stock market trends, Pound sought out to discover a statistical link between the market and Shmittah.

People watch a board showing stock fluctuations at the Tel Aviv stock exchange. (Photo: Moshe Shai/FLASH90)
Applying the same ANOVA test to the Shmittah cycle, Pound’s research revealed that the sabbatical years were the only group of years in which the market cycle averages consistent significant losses since 1871. He also saw that Shmittah years were the most volatile years of the cycle. More surprisingly, the difference in loss was greater than that noted in Professor Shiller’s decennial cycle.
“Statistically, it appears that the calendar years in which the Sabbatical year ends are worse than the other six years, and that difference is significant based on the data I have,” Pound told Breaking Israel News.
With mathematical precision, Pound quoted King Solomon in Ecclesiastes 11:2, “Divide your portion to seven, or even to eight, for you do not know what misfortune may occur on the earth,” as practical advice to prepare for the inevitable Shmittah market crash. He notes that while the stock market is cyclical, this bit of Biblical wisdom advises we diversify our portfolios.
Pound pointed out that according to the decennial theory, 2015 should be one of the better years for investing in the stock market. However, according to the Shmittah theory, we are due for a market crash. As Pound succinctly put it, “In September, we can expect something really bad.”

Outside of evangelical circles, the names Alex Kendrick and Stephen Kendrick are likely to be met with blank stares.
But thanks to low-budget hits like Fireproof and Courageous, the brothers have transformed themselves into Steven Spielbergs of Christian cinema. Their names above the title are enough to open movies that are firmly pitched to the faithful.
This drawing power was firmly on display when War Room, a celebration of the purpose-driven life, stunned box office watchers by nearly dethroning Straight Outta Compton as the weekend's highest-grossing domestic release with its $11 million debut. That's particularly impressive given that the religious drama was playing on a third of the number of screens as the N.W.A biopic.
"It's a great example of the power of a brand," said Chris Stone, founder of the consumer advocacy group Faith Driven Consumer. "The Kendrick brothers' films have an authenticity with this audience. They have consistently delivered a good product that resonates with the community."
Don't count reviewers among the fans. War Room has a woeful 18 percent "rotten" rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with critics like the Los Angeles Times' Michael Rechtshaffen dismissing the film as "mighty long-winded and wincingly overwrought."
Alex Kendrick, a former pastor who handles directing duties on the brothers' films, said the filmmakers are accustomed to the rough notices.
"Critics in Hollywood are rough with us," said Kendrick. "They don't understand why we make our movies or our worldview. But our target audience gets them and that's who we want to draw closer to a walk with God."
War Room, the story of a disintegrating marriage rescued by intense prayer, was produced for a slender $3 million and distributed by Sony's Affirm division. It is on pace to be among the Kendrick brothers' biggest hits, rivaling the $34.5 million brought in by "Courageous" and the $33.5 million generated from Fireproof. It also continues Sony's success with the genre—the studio scored with Soul Surfer and Heaven is for Real, as well as fielded the Kendricks' films.
Credit for War Room's ticket sales surge goes to its cast of African-Americans. That allowed the film to draw from pools of black and white moviegoers, an essential ingredient in its success given that polling shows that African-Americans are more religious than the U.S. population as a whole.
Nearly 90 percent of African-Americans describe themselves as belonging to a religious group, with six out of ten coming from historically black protestant churches and 15 percent hailing from evangelical churches, according to a survey by the Pew Research Center. For War Room, that translated to a racially diverse opening weekend crowd that was 36 percent African-American and 42 percent Caucasian, according to exit data.
Dramatic necessity, not commercial considerations, was at the root of the decision, Kendrick claims.
"When we were working on the plot it just seemed more powerful and passionate when told through the perspective of African-Americans," said Kendrick. "I'm not sure it would have been as heart-grabbing if we hadn't done that."
Getting the word out about the picture involved a massive grassroots effort. Facebook was particularly active, as the film's page attracted more than half a million fans, though its presence on Twitter was only marginal. More important was the work that the Kendricks did to raise awareness. The brothers shot set videos to keep audiences informed about the production and prepared packets that they sent to churches that included materials that could be incorporated into sermons prior to the film's release.
"For the Kendricks, the dialog is ongoing," said Rory Bruer, Sony's distribution chief. "The word gets out there and people are talking about the movie for many months before it opens. It all results in a cool crescendo."
Sony largely steered clear of wider-reaching platforms such as television and paid email marketing, and opted for a more conservative release pattern. Instead of debuting the film on 2,500 screens or more, as it would a typical wide-release, the studio launched it across 1,135 theaters that were heavily weighted toward the South and Midwest, where the populations are more religious.
"Films like this have an intense appeal across a narrow demographic," said Seth Willenson, an industry consultant. "You can reach a targeted audience."
War Room is hardly the first faith-based film to break out. Recent releases like God's Not Dead and Heaven is for Real have routinely affirmed the power of this audience. But when Hollywood has tried to commodify what the Kendricks do, by steering clear of the Biblical literalism and trying to make religious stories palatable for secular crowds, the results have been mixed. Noah made money but kicked up a firestorm of controversy with its departures from the Old Testament, while Exodus: Gods and Kings, an attempt to refashion the story of Moses as a Gladiator-style adventure, flopped.
"We're certainly always grateful for themes of redemption and faith in films," said Kendrick. "Where we have problem is when they take our most respected scripture and twist it in a way that is at odds with our beliefs."
Kendrick hopes that studios will take less artistic license with upcoming religious epics such as Ben-Hur and Risen, the story of a Roman centurion tasked with investigating reports of Jesus' resurrection.
"We're hopeful that these will be faithful to scripture or to the original story, and if they are, we will flock in droves," he said.
