Following the fallout of the violence from Charlottesville, many public figures have shared their thoughts about Confederate monuments, though Mike Huckabee's statements took them further.
If Confederate monuments are offensive, so are abortion clinics, Huckabee said.
In an August 17 interview with Fox News, Huckabee expressed his view that state and local communities ought to decide the fate of monuments that might be considered offensive. There can be a slippery slope, however.
When it comes to such monuments, such as those of Confederate soldiers, Huckabee also highlighted the opportunity of learning about "heinous" aspects of American history. "There's something to be said for looking at our history—the good, the bad and the ugly—and being reminded of that which we never want to repeat again," he offered.
Huckabee echoed President Donald Trump's question of asking when it ends with removing statues of figures someone vocally finds offensive. "Where does it stop?" he asked. President Trump tweeted about the potential fallout, resulting in the removal of monuments commemorating Founding Fathers, including Presidents George Washington and Thomas Jefferson.
The statements from Huckabee not only continued this connection, but also took aim at "anarchists" who have taken it upon themselves to take down statues:
Anarchists go and just tear down the statues because they are impatient with politicians doing it. That is not—that is not acceptable behavior; it is vandalism, it is anarchy, and it would be like me saying 'I don't like abortion clinics, so I'm going to go to tear them down because I find them offensive.'
Huckabee is not known for being shy about his pro-life positions. He has, however, followed and worked within the confines of abortion law in the United States to support or sign into law pro-life legislation. Unlike anarchists, he has not sought to tear down abortion clinics merely because he finds them offensive.
While Confederate monuments may offer a glimpse into history, including that which should not be repeated, abortion clinics operate to perform abortions on unborn children, providing no such history lesson, at least not until abortion is eradicated.
Huckabee's statements have not gone unnoticed by abortion-supporting media outlets.
There does not appear to be a clear answer to Huckabee and the president's wondering of "Where does it stop?"
Several kinds of statues, some not even depicting political figures, have been targeted for removal and/or defacement.

Uniting a diverse coalition of blue-collar workers, pro-life advocates and people of all backgrounds, last week Donald Trump defeated Hillary Clinton in the U.S. election—becoming the 45th president of the United States in "the biggest political upset in American history" as The Economist and media outlets worldwide reported.
The victory was unexpected partly because polling models did not fully account for what issues motivated certain voters. Exit polls showed that "7 in 10 voters nationwide say Supreme Court appointments were either the most important factor or an important factor in their decision to support a candidate."
Describing those motivated by the appointment of new judges, ABC News stated: "These voters overwhelmingly favor Trump."
Personnel Is Policy
Led by Vice President-elect Mike Pence, the Trump transition team will be making headlines daily over the next two months—working to place conservative personnel to lead departments across the executive branch, including in domestic, economic and foreign policy.
From government funding of abortion to the rise of assisted suicide, from bioethics concerns to conscience rights for medical professionals, every new staff member has the potential to be involved in protecting and defending lives. Yet it's the empty seat on the U.S. Supreme Court pro-life advocates are intently focused upon.
Who will Mr. Trump nominate for this seat, and how will the U.S. Senate guide his decision? While some nationwide have circled Inauguration Day (Jan. 20) as the first date to refocus on politics, important moves will be made in the coming weeks.
"The first appointment to fill the Scalia vacancy will give Donald Trump the opportunity to preserve, and improve, the divided court that existed before the election," says Allan Parker, president of The Justice Foundation. Parker has been involved in pro-life legal advocacy for more than two decades.
Indeed, experts at The Heritage Foundation recently noted how a divided court means the empty seat carries great significance.
A media circus is expected with any nominee to the high court, often focusing on the potential justice's gender or other external traits. Yet the important questions will center on his or her judicial philosophy.
"Donald Trump should appoint an original-intent constitutionalist, one who interprets the Constitution according to the original intent of the American founders and ratifiers," states Texas attorney Allan Parker.
"Of course, the Constitution can be amended and has been over the years—but not by judges. There is a legislative process for amendments, subject to the consent of the governed which is where we get the legitimacy of our form of government."
Small Committee Faces Big Decisions
Trump is expected to announce a nominee in the first weeks of his presidency—with much fanfare. During the campaign, he released a list of 21 potential judges from which he would ultimately choose one important name.
"Donald Trump showed real leadership by putting out a list of excellent candidates for the empty seat on the Supreme Court," says Carrie Severino, policy director of the Judicial Crisis Network. "That list, combined with the principled position taken by Leader Mitch McConnell and Senator Grassley, is what made the Supreme Court such a key issue in this election."
The Senate Judiciary Committee carries responsibility for vetting all Supreme Court nominees, including during the high-stakes nomination hearings. The committee, currently chaired by Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa), is comprised of 11 Republican and nine Democratic Senators.
While Republicans were elected to majorities in Congress—with the Democratic Party having few ways to obstruct the process—the Senate's role of providing advice and consent on new personnel appointed by President Trump could result in a holdup.
"It will be a busy spring," Severino continues. "The U.S. Senate will be in the unusual position of having to process a Supreme Court nomination at the same time as over 1,200 presidential appointment positions."
At least one Senator is leaving the Judiciary Committee. After opting not to run for reelection, Sen. David Vitter (R-Louisiana) will retire this year.
Another committee member, Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-Alabama) has forged a close bond with President-elect Trump as one of his strongest backers—leading some to speculate he will leave the Senate to work in the Trump Administration. In this event, two Republican seats on the committee will need to be filled.
"This election was all about the Supreme Court, so engaged citizens are expecting pro-life leaders in the Senate to act accordingly," says Pam Olsen, a Florida prayer leader who supported Trump during campaign season.
"We need voices like Joni Ernst, Ben Sasse and my own newly reelected Senator Marco Rubio on the Judiciary Committee—men and women of true conviction!"
More Supreme Court Seats to Fill?
Replacing the empty seat left by the late Justice Antonin Scalia may not be President Trump's only appointment to the high court.
Three current Supreme Court justices are also approaching retirement age: Ruth Bader Ginsburg (age 83), Anthony Kennedy (age 80) and Stephen Breyer (age 78). Last week, retirement rumors surrounding Justice Kennedy surfaced.
"With as many as three more vacancies possible in the next four years, [the] conservative domination could become overwhelming for generations to come," stated NPR News in post-election analysis.
Yet considering recent pro-abortion court decisions, is it astute to envision some future Supreme Court case that will weigh innocent pre-born lives on the scales of justice? Attorney Allan Parker sees a path for such an outcome.
"Decisions such as Roe v. Wade and its companion case can be overturned under the doctrine of stare decisis," asserts Parker, referring to a legal principle of constitutional law by which more than 200 Supreme Court decisions have been overturned.
"All judges take an oath to defend the Constitution, which means honoring that written text more than any prior opinions—including court opinions. The U.S. Constitution expressly has a right to life in the fifth and fourteenth amendments," states Parker.
Matt Lockett of Bound4LIFE International, who leads a team of pro-life Christian intercessors based on Capitol Hill since 2004, echoes this statement.
"Many have said that Roe v. Wade will never be overturned; they also said the election could never go the way that it did. I believe we are in a unique season of answered prayer. The pro-life movement must push forward right now with what we know is right and true," declares Lockett.
Parker emphasizes the new administration must live up to its campaign promises, saying, "Republicans need to be as bold and as confident as President-elect Trump was when he said that he would appoint judges who would overturn Roe v. Wade."

Some prophetic voices believe the nation shifted, spiritually, Oct. 21, 2016, on what may go down as one of the most important days in American history.
Largely unnoticed, 1,000 Native American Indian tribes from the United States and Canada collectively forgave the U.S. government for breaking treaties with their ancestors during a public ceremony on the National Mall.
The National Day of Prayer for First Nations, held near the Washington Monument, included intercessory petitions, proclamations and declarations of forgiveness by leaders from All Tribes D.C., a fellowship of Christians representing 1,000 American Indians from the U.S. and Canada.
A full-blooded Euchee (Yuchi) Indian, Negiel Bigpond coordinated the first-ever national prayer gathering of Native Americans in the nation's capital.
Like the annual May observance of the National Day of Prayer, signed into law by President Harry S. Truman in 1952, First Nations intercessors will convene again in 2017 during the third week of October.
Dr. Billy Graham, whose son and daughter have served on the National Day of Prayer Task Force, is a prophetic voice who believes that forgiveness by Native Americans might be part of a spiritual awakening within the nation.
"The Native American has been a sleeping giant," Graham writes. "He is awakening. The original Americans could become the evangelists who will help win America for Christ. Remember the forgotten people."
Bigpond agrees that Native Americans have taken a good first step toward aiding national awakening by extending forgiveness to the nation.
"We chose to forgive the U.S., whether it asked for it or not," said Bigpond, a fourth-generation pastor who offered forgiveness and spoke blessings over the nation alongside other tribal prayer warriors.
Bigpond, who has evangelized on 143 reservations, believes the U.S. has suffered spiritual consequences for breaking treaties with Native Americans.
In Scripture, breaking a vow or treaty brings a curse on the land, and the U.S. government broke every treaty it made with the Native American tribes, according to prophetic voice Rick Joyner, who called the prayer event one of the most important in the nation's history from his ministry headquarters in North and South Carolina.
"This is very real," Joyner said. "National injustices are a major issue we're facing now, whether we want to or not, and this is a big one."
Bigpond is an apostle at Morning Star Evangelistic Center in Oklahoma, which is affiliated with Joyner's MorningStar Ministries.
The nation's crises parallel conditions on the reservations, according to Bigpond, a certified drug- and alcohol-abuse counselor.
"We don't want the nation or our people to suffer further," said Bigpond, who holds a doctorate in divinity and is a Euchee tribe chief.
Mary Faus, who represented the Ojibway and Cree tribes at the prayer event, said the unity and power of forgiving a nation that's never apologized or asked for it was amazing.
"We believe this has shifted the nation and we are already feeling the effects of what was accomplished in D.C.," said Faus, who is the director of a house of prayer in Pennsylvania and lead intercessor with husband Jon at Hope of Nations Christian Center.
Joyner agrees that forgiveness and love are major weapons in waging spiritual warfare on behalf of the nation.
"This is one of the most noble acts of true Christian charity I have ever heard of by any people group," Joyner said. "Very few may even know that anything special happened.
"Some of the greatest things happen that way, and only a very few who have their eyes open looking in the right direction, see them," Joyner said.
Portions of a proclamation posted on the All Tribes D.C. website were read by tribal leaders gathered on the National Mall.
The proclamation reads in part, "We forgive every atrocity and broken covenant ever designed to destroy us as a race of people. We break every curse and renounce every lie purposed to decimate us as human beings.
"We forgive the government, the church and the educational system for the use of residential schools that attempted to destroy our culture and silence our voice as people by stealing our language.
"We stand in the gap for those who are unable or unwilling to forgive, and call upon the Master of Life, to forgive us for harboring unforgiveness, resentment, hatred, bitterness and rage.
"We repent of every curse spoken over America by our ancestors and we release the power of forgiveness to bring healing and the peace of Creator God to this land.
"We declare and decree that our voice will no longer be silenced and that this nation and the world will hear our voice as we speak life and blessings over the Americas and the world.
"We stand in faith believing that our citizenship lies in heaven, and we too, all await the return of our Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ.
"Being all of one mind and heart, having compassion for one another, we declare our love as brothers; not returning evil for the evil perpetuated against us, but on the contrary we choose to release a blessing, knowing that the Father of us all has called us as his children to bless and not curse, that we may inherit a blessing. Amen."
