Valley of the Dry Bones ✡ “O Mortal, Can These Bones Live Again?” - Israel365

"He said to me, 'O mortal, can these bones live again?' I replied, 'O Hashem, only You know.'" (Ezekiel 37:3, The Israel Bible™) "וַיֹּאמֶר אֵלַי בֶּן־אָדָם הֲתִחְיֶינָה הָעֲצָמוֹת הָאֵלֶּה וָאֹמַר אֲדֹנָי יְהוִה אַתָּה יָדָעְתָּ." (יחזקאל לז:ג) The Valley of Dry Bones Chapter 37 of the Book of Yechezkel (Ezekiel) contains the well-known prophecy of the valley where the dry bones will come to life. When Hashem (God) asked Yechezkel “can these bones live?” Yechezkel didn’t express doubt but rather expressed his faith in Hashem and in His omnipotence. This prophecy parallels the prophecy of the return and restoration of the Jewish people in the Land of Israel. The prophet Yechezkel prophesied during the destruction of the kingdoms of Yisrael (Israel) and Yehuda (Judea) as the people of Israel were being scattered across the globe. The people of Israel could not image that they, as a nation, would survive in the Diaspora. Even more unimaginable was their redemption and return to their ancestral homeland. Just as in the prophecy of Yechezkel 37 the dry bones rose, to too, in a miraculous fashion in the 70 years since the establishment of the State of Israel, the Jewish people have flocked back to the Land of Israel fulfilling the ancient Biblical prophecy. Today's Israel Inspiration This chapter contains Ezekiel's famous vision of the valley of dry bones coming to life. In the prophet's time, Israel was destroyed and the people scattered to the four corners of the earth. Yet, when God asks Ezekiel "can these bones live?" he doesn't express doubt or hopelessness. He answers that anything can happen if it is God's will! In our days, we stand witness to this truth, as from the ashes of the Holocaust came the birth of the modern State of Israel. Today we remember the six million who perished at the hands of the Nazis during World War II. Each survivor brings with them a story of perseverance, even in the face of evil, and they stand as a living testament to the perils that face humanity should anti-Semitism rise again.
