Ancient Byzantine Church Uncovered in Gush Etzion

“Even them will I bring to My holy mountain, and make them joyful in My house of prayer; their burnt-offerings and their sacrifices shall be acceptable upon Mine altar; for My house shall be called a house of prayer for all peoples.” Isaiah 56:7 (The Israel Bible™)
A colorful mosaic and various archaeological artifacts have been recently unearthed at the site of a large, uniquely structured Byzantine basilica in Gush Etzion, south of Jerusalem.
The discovery was made at the Khirbet Bureikut archaeological site in Migdal Oz, where the Byzantine church was originally discovered in 1977, and indicates that the inhabitants there were very wealthy. The newly discovered mosaic indicates that the church was originally built in the fourth century, according to Hananya Hizmi, Head Staff Officer of Archaeology of the Civil Administration in Judea and Samaria.

“We started to expand the excavation at the end of 2015 to find out where all this wealth came from, since this area was probably isolated from major communities during the Byzantine era,” Haim Shkolnik, who led the excavation on behalf of the Archeology Staff Officer, told Tazpit Press Service (TPS).
Artifacts recently discovered at the excavation include over five kilograms of glass items, pottery fragments, around 50 coins, including one of Alexander Jannaeus, and a handle with the seal of the Three Biblical Magi.

“The findings at the church indicate great wealth,” Shkolnik informed TPS. “There were many types of marble and glass used and it had drainage channels, a rare feature for Byzantine churches. It also had an underground crypt with two staircases leading down to it, which is also a very rare feature.”
According to Hananya Hizmi, the church was built on a cave from earlier times. “The cave was converted to a crypt and used to buried martyrs,” he said. “The Basilica has a prayer hall, aisles, a narthex running across the structure and an atrium with a big water hole. The church is built of massive stone blocks, suggesting that it was built on an earlier structure.”

“The church is different in its design from what was normal at the time,” said Shkolnik. “It was possibly founded by monks arriving from Syria, as was common in the fifth century.”
The practice of worshipping in the cave began in the fourth century and the cave was converted to a crypt when it was expanded in the 5th century and the church was built. The basilical complex was built during the Byzantine era. According to Shkolnik, the findings indicate that it had been a major pilgrimage site. The place ceased to serve as a church after the early Muslim conquest.

“We found evidence suggesting that they shattered many of the church items, contrary to what some believe about the ‘enlightened’ Muslim conquest,” Shkolnik noted.
The place also saw some activity in the ninth century, but that activity ceased until it was renewed by the Mamluks in the 14th century. The site was then abandoned until it was excavated in 1977.
The Archaeology Staff Officer is the body responsible for enforcing the antiquity laws in Judea and Samaria. It has Jewish and Palestinian employees and is in charge of protecting and developing over 2,500 archeological sites found in the region.

Holy Torah Scrolls Burned by Arabs in Judea by Adam Eliyahu Berkowitz - BREAKING ISRAEL NEWS

Holy Torah Scrolls Burned by Arabs in Judea

“Her ways are ways of pleasantness, and all her paths are peace.
She is a tree of life to them that lay hold upon her, and happy is every one that holdest her fast.” (Proverbs 3:17-18)
Arabs set fire to a number of holy Torah scrolls and a tent used for prayer and religious study in Givat Sorek, adjacent to the settlement of Karmei Tzur in Gush Etzion on Saturday night. The tent was less than 100 meters from the houses of the settlement and was also used as a gathering place for children, raising grave safety concerns.  The tent overlooks the spot where the bodies of three youths murdered in 2014 were found.
The holy books were gathered together into tall piles before being set on fire. Police said footprints were discovered leading from the scene to the nearby Arab village of Halhul, but have yet to arrest any suspects.

David Perl, head of Gush Etzion Regional Council, was deeply disturbed by the aftermath.
“These pictures are shocking. I am certain that holocaust survivors who experienced Kristallnacht and then founded Gush Etzion, never dreamed that they would see such pictures of burned books here, under Israeli authority,” said Perl, adding, “The government of Israel must control the Arab violence, that is claiming the lives and holiness of Israelis.”
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu issued the following statement on Facebook:
Benjamin Netanyahu -

Last night a synagogue in Givat Sorek, in Gush Etzion, was set on fire by Palestinians. We will prosecute the perpetrators of this crime. I expect the international community to condemn the desecration of a synagogue, an act that is the result of incessant Palestinian incitement.

Other government officials were equally disturbed by the incident. Deputy Foreign Minister Tzipi Hotovely said, “We cannot make peace with disgusting images such as these. The terrorists who carried out this attack wish to attack us as Jews. It does not matter to them where in Israel we live.”
The Head of the Jewish Home Party, Shui Mualem, told Arutz Sheva, “The burning of a synagogue with Jewish books and Torah scrolls inside is not unusual in villages that lie close to Arab towns. It happens across the entire country. The choir who preaches about each and every piece of graffiti that is anti Arab is again silent here. If a mosque were burnt they would not be so quiet.”

Today's verse describes how Abraham got up earlyוַיַּשְׁכֵּםva-yash-kaym, and from this one Hebrew word, we learn an invaluable life lesson. Just like Abraham was zealous to do God’s will at daybreak, so too should we strive to grab opportunities to do good without hesitation.  Karmey Chessed is known across Israel for its repeated efforts to help struggling individuals and families.  A lesser known program offers aid specifically to soldiers serving in the IDF with families back home that are struggling.  There are seven mothers of IDF soldiers who work directly with army social workers and Karmey Chesed. They volunteer to keep abreast of who is struggling, whether emotionally, financially or because they are lone soldiers, and work to issue whatever aid they need.

A fantastic day begins as the sun rises over Efrat, by Zev Rothkoff.  Nestled in the Judean hills, Efrat lies 12 kilometers south of Jerusalem, in the heart of Gush Etzion. Efrat was founded with the guiding idea of an open urban community between Hebron and Jerusalem, which would serve as a bridge between the city of the patriarchs and Israel's capital.

Soroka Medical Center in Be’er Sheva — a favored target of Gaza terrorists — began moving its baby ward to the hospital’s bomb shelter earlier Monday evening.
Israel public radio reported that one missile exploded near the Jerusalem suburb of Beit Shemesh, west of the capital.
One Israeli sustained a shrapnel wound from a rocket that exploded north of Ashdod.
Rocket fire came as fast as every five minutes at one point. Home Front Command has ordered all residents within 40 kilometers to stay within 15 seconds of bomb shelters.
No day camps on Tuesday and public shelters are ordered open in Be’er Sheva, Ashkelon, Ashdod and all cities within the 40 kilometer zone.
Rocket fire came as fast as every five minutes, with the Code Red incoming rocket alert activating in central Israel as well as in the south.
Residents in communities such as Mevasseret Zion, Rehovot, Yavneh and elsewhere found themselves suddenly racing for shelter – a trip some of them have never taken before.
Home Front Command ordered all residents within 40 kilometers to stay within 15 seconds of bomb shelters.
Day camps are to be closed on Tuesday and public shelters are to be open in towns and cities across the south, including Be’er Sheva, Ashkelon and Ashdod. Israelis have been ordered to limit all events to a maximum of 500 participants in order to minimize the risk of danger in case there is need to race to shelter.
Iron Dome anti-missile batteries have been deployed in strategic positions around the entire nation as Israel prepares itself to meet the challenge of dealing with the escalation in rocket and missile fire from Gaza.
The Security Cabinet decided after a three hour meeting Monday afternoon to authorize a total call up of 1,500 reservists, in a gradual process linked to the rate of escalation in attacks from Gaza. The force of Israel’s retaliation will likewise be linked to Gaza’s escalation, warned Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu.
