Community activists who are part of the National Heal America Campaign Collaborative are marking Memorial Day as a second "A Time of Love and Reconciliation" opportunity. As part of a yearlong campaign, the collaborative is spreading the word about a 2008 congressional apology for slavery and Jim Crow policies and calling on African-Americans to practice forgiveness and reconciliation.
"Memorial Day began as a way to respect soldiers who fought and died for the Union and an end to chattel slavery during the Civil War," says Ted Hayes, a community activist and homeless advocate in Los Angeles. "I can think of no better time to also remember that our nation as a whole has come so far from the days of chattel slavery and Jim Crowism. Too many people don't realize the progress America has made toward racial reconciliation, and these days of healing are meant to enlighten them so that we can move on, and our society can achieve even greater things."
Organizers of National Heal America include Hayes; the Rev. C.L. Bryant, a minister, talk radio host and producer of the Runaway Slave documentary; Mike Siegel, an author, lecturer, attorney and talk radio host, and other civil rights activists.
The original "A Time of Love and Reconciliation," held April 3, 2017, featured talk show hosts across the nation reading and discussing House Resolution 194–a congressional apology for chattel slavery and Jim Crow policies approved by Congress on July 29, 2008.
This time, organizers are asking radio and television hosts to use the passage of this resolution–and a similar one passed by the Senate–as a tool to discuss how the government and the nation are seeking to atone for and move past the racial sins of previous generations and allow old wounds to heal.
The next observance will be June 19, known as Juneteenth, the anniversary of the date when slaves in Texas finally learned of the end of the Civil War and their emancipation. The yearlong campaign culminates April 4, 2018, the 50th anniversary of the death of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
Hayes emphasizes that the campaign is not about continuing white guilt.
"The congressional apology and our calling attention to it now is not meant to further castigate guilt upon white citizens," he adds. "Instead, it is a wonderful opportunity for blacks to practice the first principles of Judaic-Christian salvation by forgiving those asking for and seeking reconciliation. Since this offer of reconciliation from the federal government has gone largely unnoticed, black citizens were divested of the chance to practice the saving grace Jesus Christ preached. Our campaign is making up for this lost opportunity."

Jerusalem Log #2 - Monday 7 p.m. 05.01.17 - Steve Martin

Jerusalem Log Monday p.m. 05.01.17
Jerusalem, Israel
#2

Greetings once again from Jerusalem!

My first full day back in the Land. This Monday it was Memorial Day, with the sirens going off all over the country at 11 am, causing the Jewish people to stop everything (driving included) in honor of the memory of fallen soldiers. It was awesome being right in the heart of Jerusalem and seeing Jaffa Street totally shut down, with people, trains, buses and all stopped, remembering their friends and fallen. Everyone in Israel has lost a close one over these 69 years.

And tonight at sundown begins Independence Day, when the annual celebration begins!

Bus #74, before it got packed

I began the day getting on the city bus #74 on south Hebron Street, taking it to the Central Bus Station at the end of Jaffa Street, before catching the light train back down Jaffa to Ben Yehuda. (Just for the fun of it.) In between I stopped in at the Distribution Center of Christian Friends of Israel, which has for more than 25 years been helping Jews making Aliyah get settled in Israel. Other projects provide needed humanitarian supplies for IDF soldiers, Holocaust victims, wedding dresses for those lacking funds, and much more.

Visiting shop owner friends on Ben Yehuda is always a joy. David, Dahlia and the Saiden family, owners of two shops, always give me special deals at Golden Jerusalem and David and Dan. I met their father Avraham over 10 years ago when I first walked into his Judaica gift shop. We have been friends ever since.

Dahlia Saiden

My good friend at Shkalim Fashion blesses me as I bless him, filling my hoodie, fleece and t-shirt orders from family and friends.

Hoodies and t-shirts at the Shkalim Fashion shop on Ben Yehuda

Leaving the shopping center, I made my way to the Western Wall in the Jewish Quarter of the Old City, I first walked on the Ramparts, which I had never done. This is a walk on top of the outer wall, formerly used by Jordanian soldiers to fire their guns at Jews prior to the 1967 Six-Day War. This end of May marks the 50th anniversary of when the Jews took back control of their city for good, reclaiming what was theirs in the beginning, when King David made it the capital of Israel.

The Western Wall (Kotel in Hebrew) has always been close to my heart. Last night a Memorial Service was held in its plaza, remembering the fallen soldiers who fought the many wars of defense during these 69 years of present day Israel’s existence.

It was good spending the afternoon at the Liberty Bell Park with a family of seven whom our ministry Love For His People has supporting going on seven years now. We are grateful for these relationships, giving us the opportunity to bless Israel and the people.

Until tomorrow…

Ahava (love) and Shalom (peace) from Jerusalem!

Israel Remembers Its Fallen, Celebrates Their Victory

Israel Remembers Its Fallen, Celebrates Their Victory

Wednesday, April 22, 2015 |  Israel Today Staff
As we do every year, Israelis on Wednesday made the incredible transition from deep mourning to bounding joy as we first marked the Memorial Day for our fallen soldiers and victims of terrorism before moving immediately into Independence Day.
Nationwide sirens on Tuesday evening and Wednesday morning brought Israel to a standstill to remember 23,320 fallen soldiers and victims of anti-Israel terrorism. Both sirens were followed by national and private Memorial Day ceremonies at cemeteries and war memorials across the country.
Nearly every Israeli has lost a family member or friend to war or terrorism, meaning that for nearly every Israeli, Memorial Day is a very solemn time.
One interesting aspect of Israel’s Memorial Day that is today lacking even in many Christian nations is the liberal referencing of God and biblical faith by the nation’s leaders. As an example, the following prayer was posted to Facebook by Israel’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs:
May God remember the souls of His heroic children: The fighters of the Israel Defense Forces, who fell in the wars of Israel, in defensive, retaliative, and security actions and during the fulfillment of their duty, including the souls of the underground fighters and brigades who fought in the national struggle - all those who sacrificed their lives for the sanctification of God’s Name.
And with the help of God, the Lord of Israel’s campaigns, they brought about the revival of the nation and the state and the redemption of the land and the city of God.
They were quicker than eagles and stronger than lions as they volunteered to assist the nation, and they saturated our holy land with their pure blood.
The memory of their self-sacrifice and heroic deeds will never disappear from us. May their souls be bound in the Bond of Life with the souls of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, and with the souls of the other heroes and martyrs of Israel who are in Heaven.
Amen.
At sunset on Wednesday (remember that in Jewish tradition, days start at sunset), our mourning was turned to sudden joy as we burst into celebration over what the sacrifices of our loved ones have purchased - a safe and secure Jewish homeland after millennia of exile and persecution.

Memorial Day - started by former slaves on May 1, 1865 in Charleston, SC

May 27, 2013

KNOW YOUR HISTORY: Memorial Day was started by former slaves on May, 1, 1865 in Charleston, SC to honor 257 dead Union Soldiers who had been buried in a mass grave in a Confederate prison camp. They dug up the bodies and worked for 2 weeks to give them a proper burial as gratitude for fighting for their freedom. They then held a parade of 10,000 people led by 2,800 Black children where they marched, sang and celebrated.

Thanks to Abstrakt Goldsmith for this nugget of history that most of us never learned in school.

Honoring family in the US Army and Coast Guard. Every Day!

Giving thanks daily for our men and women serving in the US Armed Forces - Army, Coast Guard, Navy, Air Force and Marines.

Especially to our nephews:

US Army Chris Baker
and
US Coast Guard Jake Smith!

Staff Sargeant E-6 Christopher Baker

Chris is the son of Linda Baker-Skaggs (Laurie's oldest sister), and is originally from Illinois. Chris is the husband of Tonya. They have four kids.

He has had one tour of duty in Afghanistan and will be there again.

Thank you for your honorable, courageous, and dedicated service to our country. Without you and those serving also, we would not be living in the freedom we do.

Jacob Robert Smith

Bob and I want to honour our son, Jake R. Smith this Memorial Day for his service to this blessed country we live in. Jake has served for over 10 years, first for 5 years full time during the time of the Iraq war, and now in the reserves. Jake is a wonderful soldier, son, husband to Morgan Jennifer Smith and father of two beautiful boys. We love him very much and so very proud of him!
Mary Smith

Thank you both for your honorable, courageous, and dedicated service to our country. Without you and those serving also, we would not be living in the freedom we do.

With our love,

Uncle Steve and Aunt Laurie

Shamelessly Politically Incorrect - Jim Croft

Shamelessly Politically Incorrect

Jim Croft

You are alone at night walking down the sidewalk of a large American city.  At a distance you see a group of Hasidic Jews coming toward you.  Would your heart skip a beat as you scurry to the other side of the street?  How would you react if it was a group of Hispanic teens enjoying one another’s company with animated hand gestures signing gang-lingo?

Would you be more apt to hit your door locks in an inner city neighborhood than in Amish country?
Upon entry into a restaurant, you notice that a number of tables are occupied by unshaven characters sporting tattoos and worse for wear denim jackets with club insignia. Would you opt for another establishment?

Suppose you were waiting on a flight back to the USA.  You glance to see 4 Arabic speaking men quietly talking among themselves.  Afterward, you observe them kneeling in prayer just before boarding the flight. Would you be more apprehensive about that flight or one where you see 4 French speaking passengers in deep discussion who make the sign of the cross before boarding?

If your sensitivities would heighten or if you would take precautionary measures in any of the scenarios; you, my friend, are a politically incorrect profiler.  But, don’t worry about it.  The Bible contains more than a few incidents of profiler sentiments and practices.  By the ridiculous standard set by liberals as to what is politically correct, many of our biblical heroes were most definitely politically incorrect.

Biblical Profilers

Jephthah led his army in a victorious battle against Ephraim.  The Ephraimites who were caught trying to escape back across the river were given a profiler question.  They were asked to say a word that the Ephraimites could not pronounce right, Shibboleth.  Those who failed the test were executed on the spot. (Jdg 12:5-6)

In biblical times, the Jewish slang terminology for Gentiles was dogs.  When Jesus encountered the Canaanite woman who begged the healing of her demonized daughter, he in effect called her a dog. (Matt 15:22-28)  She wisely overlooked the insult and her daughter was made whole.

The Risen Lord had to repeat a vision 3 times to convince his disciple Peter that Gentiles were not unclean.  After Peter had made sure that the Gentiles gathered at Cornelius’ home understood that God had assured him that he would not be contaminated by interaction with them, he preached the Gospel to them.  They received salvation and the Baptism in the Holy Spirit before the musicians could make it to the platform to start playing tinkle-tinkle choruses for the altar call.  (Act 10:10-48)

The Apostle Paul attached a profiling label to the Cretan believers.  He admonished Titus to rebuke them harshly lest they persist in the Cretan inclination to be habitual liars, evil beasts and lazy gluttons. (Tit 1:12-13)

Islam

Our Government’s PC anti-profiling position concerning Muslims is award winning in absurdity.  They depict those of us who voice concerns as unreasonable conservatives who see a demonic-terrorist behind every bush.  To the contrary, people who are informed about Islamic inclinations toward those of other faiths know that violence is perpetrated worldwide by Muslims who are not members of terrorist groups.

Unlike the Liberal Media, we cannot turn a blind eye to the fact that Muslims persecute Christians because doing so is Shariah policy.  In the following nations, during April of 2012 ordinary Muslims either took to the streets in violent anti-Christian riots or imposed prison sentences on believers. – Algeria, Azerbaijan, Egypt, India, Indonesia, Iran, Iraq, Kenya, Pakistan, Philippines, Nigeria, Sudan, Syria, Tunisia and Turkey.

Christians fled their homelands by the thousands; their homes, businesses and churches were torched; and hundreds were injured, scores were butchered.  Believers who were former Muslims were tried, convicted and imprisoned for supposed blasphemous apostasy against Allah and Mohammed.  Christian cemeteries were desecrated in Australia and Iran.  It is PC foolishness to ignore the 5,000 annual honor killings committed by Muslims globally against their relatives who date unapproved people or who convert away from Islam.

The PC crowd would do well to ask themselves a question.  When was the last time they heard reports of Buddhists, Hindus, Christians or the members of any other major world religion persecuting those of other faiths?  At that point, we must recognize that Islam is distinctive.

In regard to profiling Muslims, it is wrong to suspect all of being potential terrorist.  At the same time, it would be wise to have a profile understanding about generic Muslims as they increase in number in our nation.  If the worldwide pattern remains the same, many seemingly harmless Muslims are a Mosque sermon or two away from justification for persecuting Christians.

Our government already denies Christians freedom of expression in historical forums where Islam is given free pass.  It is not a big jump to say that we need to wake-up to who needs to be profiled before our PC preferential treatment of Muslims backfires.

Poverty

HHS has established $22,350 as the poverty threshold for a family of 4 with $3,380 added for each additional person.  Welfare payments, food stamps, housing subsidies, free health care and other entitlements are freely awarded.  Concentrations of entitlement recipients can be readily found in Appalachia, Indian reservations and our inner cities.  It is not uncommon for a household to have 2nd and 3rd generation recipients.

It is not unusual for there to be complaints that the same locales often have substandard schools and teachers.

On May 23, 2012 the Fox Business Network aired a John Stossel special report.  The current meaning of poverty in America today was the featured topic.  The program’s revelations were astonishing.  It seems that in our country rather than division by those that have and those that have not; it is the haves and the have a lot.

The stats quoted indicated that exceptionally high percentages of entitlement recipients have cars, air-conditioning, TVs with cable service, computer games and cell phones.  At one point, people in line at a free cooked meals kitchen were questioned.  Some insisted that welfare and food stamp allowances should be increased.  One guest interviewed assessed that the USA is fast becoming a nation of moochers.

Imagine

With all that being said, let us now consider the reputation of Asian and Oriental immigrants to our nation.  Most of them arrive with an appreciation for the right to liberty and the freedom to pursue happiness without any assumption that happiness is guaranteed.  Multiple families frequently practice communal living to set aside funds to launch businesses.  A high premium is put on ambition to succeed, diligence and education.  The honor of parents and respect for teachers is culturally ingrained.

Let us envision what might happen in a 10 year experiment.  The $ value of entitlements; dispersion of rented housing and owned homes; and the quality of schools and teachers remain the same.  However, 5,000 fresh off the boat Asian or Oriental immigrants settle among the inhabitants of a given poverty stricken area.  It might be in Appalachia; on an Indian reservation; or in an inner city.   Do you imagine that any of the following might happen?

Entitlement dispersions and unemployment per capita would shrink.  Much dilapidated housing would be refurbished.  Schools and teachers once regarded substandard would suddenly have an increase of honor students and those graduated who go on to get higher educations.  Significant numbers of the immigrants would break into income brackets that would empower them to move their families elsewhere.

If you imagine that much of the aforementioned would evolve; you, my friend, are politically incorrect.

Memorial Day

This is a time for us to reflect about the reasons for which our armed service personnel gave their lives.  For many, it was for our right to express mindsets that are now considered politically incorrect.  We should remember the fallen and give thanks for them.

To keep that which they died for, it is not sufficient for us to restrict activities for the welfare of our nation to intercessions to Almighty God.  There is a need to bombard our state and federal legislators with our concerns.  We should insist that the shamelessly politically incorrect positions expressed in this article are again deemed politically correct.

Only 50% of American Christians are registered to vote.  Honor our fallen by registering to vote and by getting others to do the same.  And, enjoy a great Memorial Day.

Be blessed and be a blessing,

Jim Croft
