Encountering Jesus on the Holiest Day of the Jewish Year

SANDRA TEPLINSKY  CHARISMA NEWS
Standing With Israel
Yom Kippur, traditionally regarded as the holiest day of the biblical year, falls this Friday evening through Saturday evening on Sept. 29-30. Yom Kippur literally translates "Day of Covering," but is usually called the Day of Atonement. The English word atonement was devised specifically to convey the "at-one-ment" with God that was attained by following the detailed procedures for sacrifice and priestly cleansing on this day. (Lev. 16 and 23:26-32, Num. 29:7-11) For a basic summary of Yom Kippur, visit https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yom_Kippur.
Our salvation or right standing with God does not depend on our observance of special days or seasons. However, if you have faith to engage authentically by the Holy Spirit in these appointed days, you may find rich blessing in them. For this reason, many Christians and Messianic Jews celebrate Passover, First Fruits (Resurrection Day), the New Year/Yom Teruah and Feast of Tabernacles. Regarding Yom Kippur, however, there can be unique challenges. The day seems to require an embrace of a system for forgiveness of sin specifically rendered ineffective (if not altogether anti-Christian) in the New Covenant. Moreover, Yom Kippur is a solemn day that, as traditionally kept, can appear almost morose. As a result, many Christians who celebrate other feasts give little attention to the highly meaningful Day of Atonement. Nevertheless, I believe that followers of Yeshua can not only observe this day with integrity, but that God invites us, as a 1 Peter 5 holy priesthood, to engage intimately with Him on Yom Kippur in at least five ways. (And just a loving reminder here: Gentile believers can only authentically observe this or other feasts with integrity by being who God created them to be—Gentiles, not Jews.)
1. Yom Kippur is, first and most of all, a time to commemorate Messiah's stunning self-sacrifice. We are eternally thankful that Yeshua is our once-for-all atonement: "When Messiah appeared as [High Priest] .... He entered into the Holies once for all—not by the blood of goats and calves but by His own blood, having obtained eternal redemption" (Heb. 9:11-12, TLV).
Therefore, throughout the day on Yom Kippur we honor and celebrate Yeshua. He has marvelously done away with sin, not just covered (as in "Kippur") our sin. Yom Kippur is an appropriate time to seek renewed and expanded understanding of the authority and power of His shed blood. It is a day to engage "the fellowship of sharing in His sufferings" and "power of His resurrection" (Phil. 3:10)
2. With this undertone of celebration for Messiah's once for all atonement, Yom Kippur is a Sabbath, a day not to work but assemble before YHVH. It is a day on which we "deny" or "afflict" ourselves (Lev. 23:27, 32, Num. 29:7) The Hebrew word generally translated either "deny" or "afflict" means to look down, abase, chasten or harshly deal with. In context, the word refers to an extreme humbling, sober examination and judgment of oneself. For this reason the Jewish people fast on Yom Kippur. The fast is a matter of tradition but fits well with the day. I recommend it for those desiring to engage uniquely with God on Yom Kippur.
Recall that Yeshua calls His followers to self-denial, too, " Then Jesus said to His disciples, "If anyone will come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow Me.me" (Matt. 16:24, MEV). Romans 12:1 affirms: "I urge you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy, and acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service of worship."
God does not want our lives focused on self-examination or affliction throughout the year. But He does call us to judge ourselves regarding sin. By rightly judging ourselves and turning from sin, we may avoid coming under His judgment or chastening (1 Cor. 11:31). On a somewhat related note, recall that Israel's high priest had to atone first for his own sins before he could minister to God's people. Could God be calling you to consecrate this Yom Kippur as a Sabbath on which to humble yourself, fast and ask Him to search your heart? Would you want to receive anew His precious gifts of conviction, repentance and expanded, holy love relationship?
3. Yom Kippur involves sacrifice. According to the New Covenant, how do we offer God a sacrifice? Hebrews 13:15 says, "Through Him, then, let us continually offer to God the sacrifice of praise, which is the fruit of our lips, giving thanks to His name." Yom Kippur is a highly appropriate day to spend in sacrificial praise and worship. But bear in mind that for praise to be sacrificial it must cost something, such as time, resources, energy—or pride. The notion of sacrifice is one not often discussed by followers of Yeshua. Therefore, Yom Kippur can be a time to revisit the Scriptures, including those in the New Covenant, regarding the blessing of sacrifice. These are but a few relevant verses through which we can be empowered by the Spirit, through rightly offered sacrifice, for the days ahead:
"Gather to me my consecrated ones, who made a covenant with me by sacrifice ..." (Ps. 50:5) Consecrated ones who have made a covenant by sacrifice include those partaking in the New Covenant, with its exchange of Messiah's life for theirs, and their lives given over to Him. Reaffirming this sacrificial exchange on Yom Kippur can reaffirm covenant with God.
"Sacrifice a thank offering to God ..." (Ps. 50:14). Thank offerings were freewill offerings not required for the forgiveness of sin. Instead, they were given to God as an overflow of love and gratitude. He highly and uniquely valued these voluntary offerings. Today, because our sins have been forgiven, thank offerings include voluntary worship and praise—and any other way in which our lives are laid down for Him and His people.
"He who sacrifices thank offerings honors Me and prepares the way so that I may show him the salvation of God" (Ps. 50:23). Sacrificial thank offerings can serve as powerful intercessory acts.
Followers of Messiah "are a holy priesthood to offer up spiritual sacrifices that are acceptable to God through Jesus Christ" (1 Pet. 2:5). Spiritual sacrifices offered voluntarily, not reluctantly, may be a vital function of God's holy priesthood.
"The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit, a broken and contrite heart" (Ps. 51:17). The value of any sacrifice depends on the disposition of heart with which it is offered.
4. "Do not forget to do good and to share. For with such sacrifices God is well pleased" (Heb. 13:16). A Messianic or Christian observance of Yom Kippur can involve sacrificial giving to others. One of many ways to "do good and to share" with others is to pray for them. Yom Kippur can—and I believe should—be a day on which followers of Yeshua pray intentionally for Israel's salvation.
In Israel and around the world, Jewish people will gather in synagogues this weekend to fast, recite Scripture, and ask for forgiveness of sin. They will end the day hoping or trusting that their sins were forgiven. In so doing, they will reaffirm the traditional Jewish belief there is a way to the Father not involving Yeshua, His Son. Meanwhile, God's heart toward them is expressed in Romans 10:1: "My heart's desire and prayer to God for Israel is that they may be saved." He yearns for His ancient covenant people to be fully reconciled to Him in Messiah. You, as part of a royal priesthood, can sacrificially intercede on Yom Kippur for that to happen.
At the end of Yom Kippur, the Jewish people traditionally sound the shofar. According to rabbinic teaching, the trumpet blast signifies that our souls have been freed from sin; therefore, we may have a good year. It also reminds us of the Jubilee, which is heralded by shofar blowing every 50th Yom Kippur (Lev. 25:8-9). Last, the shofar is said to announce the departure of God's especially near presence on Yom Kippur with His people though the high priest.
5. For believers, the shofar blast of Yom Kippur has deeper meaning. It announces a sealing of that which has taken place by the Spirit throughout the day. In addition, it heralds the coming Day of the Lord or Day of Judgment. This is the glorious yet fearsome day of Messiah's return. Many Messianic leaders believe Yom Kippur prophetically foreshadows the Second Coming and day of Israel's national salvation; and therefore, Yeshua will return as Judge and King on a Yom Kippur in the not-too-distant future. This is implicit in Paul's teaching: "And so all Israel will be saved, as it is written: 'The Deliverer will come out of Zion, and He will remove ungodliness from Jacob"; "for this is My covenant with them, when I shall take away their sins" (Rom. 11:26-27).
For those choosing to engage with it, Yom Kippur can be a day of special blessing in at least five ways. (1) Yom Kippur can be a Sabbath on which to commemorate Yeshua's heaven-and-earth-shattering atonement. (2) It is a day to fast and soberly invite the Holy Spirit's conviction, correction and then reconsecration of ourselves as living sacrifices. (3) It is a day to offer God a genuine sacrifice of praise. (4) Intercession for the salvation of Israel (and others) is highly appropriate this day. (5) Celebration of the promise of Yeshua's return and hope of His coming is perfect for Yom Kippur. The Bible's last words remain, "Even so, come, Lord Jesus" (Revelation 22:20)

The Hidden Prophetic Meaning of the Feast of Atonement - KELLY MCDONALD JR. CHARISMA NEWS

The Hidden Prophetic Meaning of the Feast of Atonement

Standing With Israel
The Feast of Atonement is the last of the 10 days of awe. This year, it begins Sept. 29 at sunset. It is also called Yom Kippur, or the Day of the Covering. In ancient times, the sins of the nation of Israel were covered by sacrifices on this day. This is described in Leviticus 16.
Two goats in particular were of special focus in this chapter. The first goat was called the Lord's goat. It was sacrificed for the sins and uncleanness of the nation. The second goat was called the azazel goat. It had all the sins of the nation confessed over it and was then chased into the desert. In latter times, they chased this goat off a cliff. These goats have prophetic meanings, one of which has yet to come to pass.
The first goat represents the sacrifice of Jesus to pay for our sins. This goat had its blood put on the ark of the covenant and the altar of incense in the Temple. Jesus took His blood into heaven to apply it to the heavenly ark of the covenant and altar of incense. His blood makes a way for us to receive salvation and reconciliation to the Father. The book of Hebrews, especially chapters 9 and 10, explains this.
It was therefore necessary that the replicas of heavenly things be cleansed with these sacrifices, but that the heavenly things themselves be cleansed with better sacrifices than these. For Christ did not enter holy places made with hands, which are patterned after the true one, but into heaven itself, now to appear in the presence of God for us. ... but now He has appeared once at the end of the ages to put away sin by sacrificing Himself (Heb. 9:23-24, 26b).
While Jesus has already come and been sacrificed as our "goat for the Lord", the prophetic fulfillment of the second goat has yet to occur. This second goat represents Satan, the devil. While each of us has sinned and fallen short of the glory of God (Romans 3:23), Satan is the tempter of mankind (Mark 1:13). In other words, Satan has a share in the sin of humanity because he tempts us to sin. This means he is guilty as well. This is why the sins of the people were placed upon the azazel goat and then chased away.
Just after the prophetic fulfillment of trumpets at Jesus' public return, Satan will be bound and placed in the abyss for 1,000 years. This is the fulfillment of the second goat from atonement.
And I saw an angel come down from heaven, having the key of the bottomless pit and a great chain in his hand. And he laid hold on the dragon, that old serpent, which is the Devil, and Satan, and bound him a thousand years, And cast him into the bottomless pit, and shut him up, and set a seal upon him, that he should deceive the nations no more, till the thousand years should be fulfilled: and after that he must be loosed a little season (Rev 20:1-3).
The Feast of Atonement is honored by a complete fast and abstaining from work. On this day, we worship God in sincere appreciation for the sacrifice of Jesus to pay the price for our sins. Furthermore, we look forward to our tempter being removed from earth just before the 1,000-year reign of Jesus begins.

Yeshua, Israel and Yom Kippur - ONE FOR ISRAEL

Dr Erez Soref President of  ONE FOR ISRAEL
Shalom!

The ten days between Rosh HaShana (the Feast of Trumpets) and Yom Kippur are often called the ten "Days of Awe". Jewish people often take Yom Kippur seriously as a time when they can get right with God. Many may fast, go to the synagogue, and truly hope for a clean slate. But since the temple was destroyed, there can be no sacrifices. Is there forgiveness without a sacrifice? At this contemplative time of year, some come to the conclusion that something big is missing. Something that cannot be fixed by missing a couple of meals... Click the picture to watch Ari's story below!

"I realized I was as far away from God as the moon is from me, and I had no way of being able to get back together with God, of having atonement..."

As we come up to Yom Kippur this Friday night, we would love it if you would join us in praying for the Jewish people to meet their Messiah at this time. If you want to hear of more Jewish people who have come to faith at Yom Kippur, you can read some stories here.

YESHUA IN YOM KIPPUR

There are many ways in which the Biblical ordinance of Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement, foreshadows the greatest atonement of all: the sacrifice of the Messiah himself. God's lists of seemingly strange and even barbaric commands about blood sacrifice in the Law can be bewildering to us in the twenty-first century. But when we look carefully at the detailed instructions and what is behind them, it can be overwhelming to see the beauty and depth of God's wisdom and prophetic plans. Continue reading...

THE DOUBLE MEANING OF THE HEBREW WORD FOR "SAND"

Sometimes Israel experiences severe sandstorms, which can even result in fatalities as breathing becomes more of a challenge. Dense, yellow fog of sand particles can hang in the air for days, creating a surreal and unpleasant environment until the air clears and the skies become blue again. A few years ago we had a sandstorm during the 'Ten Days of Awe' between the Feast of Trumpets (Rosh HaShanah) and the Day of Atonement, the holiest day of the Jewish calendar, and here are some reflections on sand in relation to our own lives. Continue reading...

You Won't Believe What Joel Osteen's Lakewood Church Is Doing Now - CHRISTINE D. JOHNSON CHARISMA NEWS

You Won't Believe What Joel Osteen's Lakewood Church Is Doing Now

Join us on our podcast each weekday for an interesting story, well told, from Charisma News. Listen at charismapodcastnetwork.com.

Houston's massive Lakewood Church will host a significant portion of the Jewish community for their High Holy Days, Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. Joel Osteen and his church, which meets in the former Compaq Center, volunteered to host the Congregation Beth Yeshurun after its Meyerland, Texas, facility sustained water damage from Hurricane Harvey.
Lakewood learned of the need when U.S. Rep. John Culberson asked the church to consider providing space for Beth Yeshurun during this important season.
"My immediate response was, 'Of course,'" says Jackelyn Viera Iloff, senior advisor at Lakewood Church/Joel Osteen Ministries. "It was a wonderful opportunity for us to do something for Beth Yeshurun. We have always been close friends with the Jewish community, and we have a wonderful relationship with Denis Braham [senior advisory board member of Beth Yeshurun]. We are honored they would consider us to replace their facilities for the special holiday coming up."
Lakewood is also making church volunteers available for the High Holy Days gatherings.
"Joel and Victoria want to ensure that our sanctuary is as comfortable and familiar as possible for the Beth Yeshurun congregation," Iloff says. "The Lakewood family—staff and volunteers alike—are very excited about this and are looking forward to the High Holy services. Everyone wants to help and be a part of it."
Iloff says Lakewood believes bringing another congregation onto its campus is "doable."
"Details were relatively easy to iron out because we have a team in place," she says.
After Hurricane Harvey passed through the area in late August, Lakewood "sheltered about 450 Houstonians at one time," Iloff says. "Now all of our shelter guests have moved on to other accommodations. As our guests transitioned, we worked with the city and county to help those needing long-term shelter and housing assistance."

Iloff expects future opportunities to open up for the church to interact with the Jewish community as a result of assisting Congregation Beth Yeshurun, led by Rabbi David Rosen.
"I cannot thank Joel Osteen enough for his sensitivity and his encouragement," said Rosen in a KHOU report. "It's a reaffirmation of the beautiful spirit of collegiality and interfaith conversation we have here in Houston."

Iloff noted that the Osteen family has "a great love for Israel and a heart for the Jewish people."
"We interact quite a bit with members of the Jewish community already," she says. "In fact, we are glad that they felt comfortable enough to approach us in the first place. They know that our hearts and our arms are always open to our Jewish brothers and sisters."
Congregation Beth Yeshurun practices Conservative Judaism and serves more than 2,000 families in the Houston area.

Growing Number of Christians Now Celebrate Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur - TIMES OF ISRAEL

Growing Number of Christians Now Celebrate Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur

Standing With Israel

On the night of Rosh Hashanah, thousands of people will leave work, gather in congregations across the globe and worship God, the ruler of the world.
Ten days later they will begin a fast and gather again to pray, this time atoning for their sins. On both occasions, they will praise Jesus Christ and pray for his return. They are not Jews, nor are they Jews for Jesus. Rather, these congregants are members of an evangelical Christian movement called the Living Church of God.
On the days Jews know as Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, these Christians celebrate what they call the Feast of Trumpets and Day of Atonement. "We're not trying to be Jewish," said Dexter Wakefield, a Living Church minister and the church's spokesman. "We're obeying God's commandments. The holy days have great meaning for the Christians who keep them."

Why the Great American Total Solar Eclipse is cause for pause? - Krista Smith

Why the Great American Total Solar Eclipse is cause for pause?

August 15, 2017
Let me begin by saying, I am not suggesting the total eclipse is going to cause anything in particular. However, there are undeniable (call them) coincidences that do in fact lineup with prophecy and Biblical events. That being said, I believe it means "something" and only time will tell what that is. There have been many people scoffing at any mention of these types of possibilities because there have been numerous predictions of peril and doom that have not occurred. But, God's Word is Truth. He will keep His promises and He does have a way of doing things in His perfect timing. In my opinion, I don't think anything will happen on this day but I do think it is a warning of things to come.

  • While eclipses are not that uncommon, total solar eclipses only occur about every year and a half and often occur over the ocean rather than land. Don't let anyone fool you into thinking this eclipse is nothing out of the ordinary. Day will be turned to night all across the middle United States. It's been 99 years since a total solar eclipse crossed the entire United States and having another total solar eclipse cross the entire United States again, forming an 'X', just a few years later is perhaps unprecedented.

"As Jesus was sitting on the Mount of Olives, the disciples came to him privately. "Tell us," they said, "when will this happen, and what will be the sign of your coming and of the end of the age?... At that time many will turn away from the faith and will betray and hate each other... Because of the increase of wickedness, the love of most will grow cold, but the one who stands firm to the end will be saved...."

"For in the days before the flood, people were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, up to the day Noah entered the ark; and they knew nothing about what would happen until the flood came and took them all away. That is how it will be at the coming of the Son of Man...Therefore keep watch, because you do not know on what day your Lord will come. But understand this: If the owner of the house had known at what time of night the thief was coming, he would have kept watch and would not have let his house be broken into. So you also must be ready, because the Son of Man will come at an hour when you do not expect him."  - Matthew 24: 3-44

  • It's been noted that the United States is the wealthiest, most powerful, and most influential Gentile nation. It is also the world's ethnic melting pot and hosts a proto-world government in the form of the United Nations. In Jewish tradition, Lunar eclipses (blood moons) are omens for Israel whereas solar eclipses are omens for the Gentiles. The 4 Blood Moons in 2014-15 were the first in 2000 years that a Tetrad of four Blood Moons occurred all on Jewish feast days and in a Shemitah Year! An unprecedented event. It is quite possible that in 2014-15 the Blood Moons were the Omens for Israel and now in 2017 the Solar Eclipses are the Omens for the Gentiles.

  • The 7 year Tribulation is also known as the Day of the LORD when God enters into judgment with the Gentile nations. The fact that two total solar eclipses, spaced seven years apart, cross the entirety of the contiguous United States, and form an 'x' over the chief Gentile nation on earth should give you pause.

  • The eclipse on August 21st is also exactly 40 days from Yom Kippur (The Day of Atonement) which is on September 29th. "40" represents a period of testing in the Bible as can been seen in the 40 years the Israelites wandered in the wilderness and the 40 days Jesus was tested in the wilderness. This 40 day period leading up to Yom Kippur is more than random. In fact, this period of time beginning on August 21st is called the Season of Teshuvah, which in the Jewish faith is a time to get right with God before judgment falls on the Day of Atonement.

  • On June 30, 2015, what was dubbed as the Star of Bethlehem reappeared for the 1st time in 2000 years. (Google: Bethlehem Star 2015) This star appeared 2000 years ago to announce the birth of the King. Interesting timing that it has shown up again in 2015. What if it is again a sign to announce the coming of the King?

Well, if you already struggle with Bible prophecy this one is really going to blow your mind. I know it sounds crazy but it is a prophecy of the Great Sign according to Revelations 12. Hang in there, and keep reading, the scripture may be unfolding in our solar system in just a few weeks.

Here is the verse, "Then I witnessed in heaven an event of great significance. I saw a woman clothed with the sun, with the moon beneath her feet, and a crown of twelve stars on her head. She was pregnant, and she cried out because of her labor pains and the agony of giving birth..... She gave birth to a son...."

  • There are many who currently believe the eclipse is intimately connected to an upcoming September 23rd astronomical alignment involving the constellations Virgo and Leo, along with Mercury, Mars, Venus and Jupiter. On that date (9/23/17), Jupiter will exit the lower part of Virgo (the virgin) in a way that would fulfill the “man child” of Revelation 12 being birthed by the woman.  Regulus and the other stars of Leo—along with the other three visible planets—comprise the “crown of twelve stars” that Revelation 12:1 says will be upon the travailing woman’s head. You’ve got this epic solar eclipse over America and it’s happening right at Regulus, in Leo the Lion—the constellation. There are twelve constellations. It could happen anywhere, but it’s happening in the constellation of the king, with all of this coming together it just doesn't seem totally off base that it could mean the return of the king! - It's in the Bible as a Great Sign in the Last Days. I believe it is a possibility worth pondering, especially coupled with everything else going on. According to researchers this is the 1st time the solar system will be in exactly this alignment in over 7000 years. There were 9 close matches from 6000 BC to 4000 AD in over these 10,000 years none of the 9 matches that were close met everyone of the requirements of the scripture.
The uniqueness and precision of the September alignment is its greatest strength.  It's not enough that the moon and sun are near Virgo once a year.  It's not enough that Jupiter passes through Virgo's womb every 11 or 12 years.  Every condition in Revelation 12:1-2 has to be met and that's  what's unique about the alignment on September 23rd.The woman must be clothed with the sun.The woman must have the moon under her feet. She must have a crown of exactly twelve stars. She must be pregnant and give birth. Pregnancies only happen in wombs and they last 37 to 44 weeks, on Sept 23rd it will have been 42 weeks.  It's not enough for Jupiter to just pass through Virgo or retrograde nearby.  It needs to stay in her womb in a way that pictures a pregnancy.

From 2015 to Now:
  • The Tetrads falling on 4 Feast Days of the Lord in a Shemitah year in 2014/15, an unprecedented event.
  • The Bethlehem Star in 2015 which has not been out in over 2000 years.
  • The upcoming Total Solar Eclipse crossing the US and that coupled with the fact that it will not be visible by any other countries. That has never happened.
  • There will be another Total Eclipse going diagonally across the other side of the US just 7 years later in 2024, making an X across our country, the first one on 8/21/17 is also not visible to any other countries. Interesting that the Bible talks about a 7 year tribulation period in the Last Days.
  • The upcoming solar alignment on Sept 23rd, sounding like it lines up with a description of a Great sign in the heavens from revelation 12.

It's just too much for me to put my head in the sand. Just thought I would share this with you, in case you find it as interesting as I do. If you don't no worries, it's just information.

“There will be signs in the sun, moon and stars. On the earth, nations will be in anguish and perplexity at the roaring and tossing of the sea....When these things begin to take place, stand up and lift up your heads, because your redemption is drawing near.”
- Luke 21:25-28

"...in the last days there will be very difficult times. For people will love only themselves and their money. They will be boastful and proud, scoffing at God, disobedient to their parents, and ungrateful. They will consider nothing sacred.

They will be unloving and unforgiving; they will slander others and have no self-control. They will be cruel and hate what is good. They will betray their friends, be reckless, be puffed up with pride, and love pleasure rather than God.

They will act religious, but they will reject the power that could make them godly. Stay away from people like that! They are the kind who work their way into people’s homes and win the confidence of[a] vulnerable women who are burdened with the guilt of sin and controlled by various desires. (Such women are forever following new teachings, but they are never able to understand the truth.) ...They have depraved minds and a counterfeit faith.

Yes, and everyone who wants to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will suffer persecution. But evil people and impostors will flourish. They will deceive others and will themselves be deceived. But you must remain faithful to the things you have been taught. You know they are true, for you know you can trust those who taught you.

You have been taught the holy Scriptures from childhood, and they have given you the wisdom to receive the salvation that comes by trusting in Christ Jesus. All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives. It corrects us when we are wrong and teaches us to do what is right. God uses it to prepare and equip his people to do every good work." 2 Timothy 3: 1-17
