Star Wars: God's Grace and Redemption - SHAWN A. AKERS - CHARISMA MAGAZINE

Star Wars: God's Grace and Redemption

Get Out of the Boat, with Shawn Akers
I was 11 when the first Star Wars movie, A New Hope, came out in 1977. You can do the math on my age.
I instantly fell in love with the film and the ones that followed. Although I was 17 by the time the third one—Return of the Jedi—premiered in 1983, I hadn't grown out of it. They were all riveting, especially when we discovered that Darth Vader turned out to be Luke Skywalker's father and Leia turned out to be his twin sister. It was high drama at its best for a kid like me.
But oh how the years have passed quickly. With the stresses and responsibilities that come in life—marriage, children, bills to pay and so on—I sometimes feel as though I completely lost touch with my inner child a long time ago—in a galaxy far, far away.
Shed no tears for me, however. It's my son who has paid the price. He's now 11 years old and, through all of these years, I have not allowed myself to connect with him on his level. I can't begin to tell you how sad that is and how much I deeply regret it.
With God, however, it's never too late to repent. It's never too late for redemption. "In Him we have redemption through His blood and the forgiveness of sins according to the riches of His grace" (Eph. 1:7).
With the release of this weekend's newest adventure in the Star Wars saga, The Force Awakens, I have been afforded an opportunity to redeem myself with Joshua. He loves all the Star Wars movies, and he's still young enough to be smitten with Star Wars Lego. He has built many things—but that's another story.
This past weekend, Josh and I sat down and watched five of the first six Star Wars movies together. We had watched some together previously, and I had taken him to a Star Wars convention three years ago. But the excitement for me faded away. This, however, was a great time for us to bond and for him to ask me questions about the movies concerning things he didn't quite understand. I did my best to enlighten him.
Josh's passion for the Star Wars movies is obvious, but Josh is also a very godly young man, and he is aware of the biblical parallels between good and evil. We talked about how Satan wanted to be like God and how God expelled him from heaven, similar to Anakin Skywalker wanting to keep his wife from dying—something only God can do—in episode three. Anakin couldn't have those powers, so he turned to evil.
However, I like to believe that it was God who redeemed Darth Vader at the end of Return of the Jedi. Of course Darth Vader never professed Christ, but he realized the dark side (Satan's kingdom) could be overcome. It's never too late.
And you know the rest of that story.
Despite my past behavior, I don't believe that I am or have been a bad father. I won't condemn myself because Romans 8:1 says, "There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, who walk not according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit." But I also know I could do much better.
With the rekindling of the Star Wars saga, I have been given a second chance to connect with my son and to get to know him better. I cherish the opportunity and can't wait to take him to see The Force Awakens. Who knows what surprises—and thrills—lie before us?
I believe it also gives me a chance to connect with Josh spiritually and to help him become even more of a godly young man than he already is. I am very proud of him for his openness to the Word and his voracity in following Jesus.
Has your relationship with your children waned? Are you struggling to connect with them? Ask God to help you find something—a passion of theirs—that you can share. Like a good friend, get to know your child all over again and revel in their company. It will melt your child's heart and bring lasting benefits.
"A wise son makes his father glad" (Prov. 15:20).
And as I always like to say, "there is that."

"I Saw a Huge Rusty Plow Sitting in Many Churches" - Bill Yount, The Elijah List

I saw a huge rusty plow sitting in the sanctuary of many churches. Its size filled the back of the sanctuary to the pulpit. Its pointed blade now dull, rested just short of the altar. The plow seemed ancient and out of place, like it should be in a museum.
It struggled to remember the glory days when plowing was crucial in the Kingdom of Heaven, for without plowing there can be no planting, and therefore no harvest. The plow knew it was never meant to be in one place this long. (Photo via Pixabay)
Suddenly, a knock came pounding on the door of these churches. A knock so powerful that it shifted the huge rusty plow forward enough to touch the altar. I could then see that this huge plow was made up of the congregation as a spirit of intercession came upon it. The spirit of prayer shook the whole house as fresh heavenly oil began dripping down upon this rusty plow.
The Lord then spoke, "As in the days of old, I am returning to this house with great power to bring in the harvest."
Immediately, confidence came upon the plow as the congregation proclaimed, "I can do this. I can do that. I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me." A get-up-and-go had come upon us. A pioneering spirit was rising up to take us where we had never gone before: Outside to unknown territories and regions where awesome adventure had been waiting for us. We were about to make history.
Who Was that Knocking on the Door?
I asked the Lord, "Who was that pounding on the door of these churches?"
He said, "It's the lost knocking to get inside My house. But the huge rusty plow was taking up all the room and they couldn't get in. Not one of them. But now with My oil dripping on the plow and the shaking moving it forward to outside the house, a great harvest is guaranteed with acceleration. So much so that the plowman will overtake the reaper." (See Amos 9:13.)
(Photo by Robert Bartow "Harvest" via elijahshopper.com)
"Churches will be filled again with standing room only. People will line the streets to get in as that well-oiled machine moves outside of My house. I will continue to help by shaking the heavens and the earth, releasing My reverend fear into communities and nations. I will continue to get people's attention, for I want no one to be lost. My shaking alone will cause hardened children and grandchildren to run like prodigals into the arms of Jesus."
I used to think to plow the ground first was a long hard season, and then to wait for the harvest was another long season. But I believe this Scripture (Amos 9:13) is saying that the reaping will be in the same season as we are plowing. In fact, we will overtake the reaper. That's acceleration.

ElijahList Prophetic Resources

The plow was V-shaped, having two huge sides on it. The V-shape reminded me how geese fly and how they partner working together, going forward even in adverse winds.
He that observeth the wind shall not sow; and he that regardeth the clouds shall not reap. As thou knowest not what is the way of the Spirit...even so thou knowest not the works of God who maketh all. In the morning sow thy seed, and in the evening withhold not thine hand: for thou knowest not whether shall prosper, either this or that, or whether they both shall be alike good. Ecclesiastes 11:4-6
My Hand is Coming Upon Your Plow
"The blood, sweat, and tears that you have sown will now catapult you to find your joy and strength in the harvest fields: Crack houses, human-trafficking, in fields of addiction, and in the company of man slayers. Where fear abounds, you will discover you are well able to take down every giant in the land. For My hand is now coming upon your plow. I am releasing an electrifying jump start upon it. It is now unstoppable. Don't look back. Don't even look ahead. Look up, for I now go before you and I have your back covered."
Redemption is Coming Upon Your Fields
"Know that your labor until now is not in vain, and though in times past you were weary in well doing, you will be glad you didn't quit. For I am coming onto your fields of labor with redemption. New anointings and unctions will open up new ground and opportunities, for the earth is Mine. Joy will be found in the plowing along with the reaping." (Photo via Wikipedia)
I found this short sermon to be interesting by Charles Spurgeon:
"If a farmer knew that a bad year was coming, he would perhaps only sow an acre or two; but if some prophet could tell him, 'Farmer, there will be such a harvest next year as there never was,' he would say, 'I will plough up my grass lands, I will stub up those hedges: every inch of ground I will sow.'
"So do you. There is a wondrous harvest coming. Plough up your headlands; root up your hedges; break up your fallow ground, and sow, even amongst the thorns. Ye know not which shall prosper, this or that; but ye may hope that they shall be alike good. Enlarged effort should always follow an increased hope of success."
It's time to plow.

"A Tamarisk in the Desert" ✡ Plant a Tree in the Holy Land!

For he shall be like a tamarisk in the desert, and shall not see when good cometh; but shall inhabit the parched places in the wilderness, a salt land and not inhabited.

JEREMIAH (17:6)

v'-ha-ya k'-ar-ar ba-a-ra-va v'-lo yir-e kee ya-vo tov v'-sha-khan kha-ray-reem ba-mid-bar e-retz m'-lay-kha v'-lo tay-shayv

Today's Israel Inspiration

To illustrate the difference between trusting in God and trusting in man, Jeremiah paints a strong contrast between two vivid images. One who relies on man is compared to a small shrub in the barren and rocky desert called the tamarisk. The  Hebrew name for this plant is 'arar' (עַרְעָר), similar to the Hebrew word for childless 'areeree' (עֲרִירִי), invoking feelings of lifelessness and emptiness. Someone who relies on the Lord, however, is likened to a majestic tree with deep roots beside the ever-flowing river, growing tall and whose branches provide shelter from the heat. Israel has two choices: they could trust in God and remain secure in their Land, flourishing like the tree by the river; or cut themselves off from the Divine presence and choose to be exiled to the wilderness of the tamarisk. Now more than ever we must be stalwart in our faith in the Almighty to protect the Land of Israel and to help her flourish. Show your faith and be part of Israel's blossoming by planting a tree today.

Was the Timing of 'War Room' Movie Release Prophetic?

Was "War Room" made for such a time as this?

Was the Timing of 'War Room' Movie Release Prophetic?

Was "War Room" made for such a time as this?
It was like Hollywood coming to town for Kannapolis, North Carolina—population 50,000—during a movie premiere of War Room. As the red carpet rolled into the historic Gem Theatre, something stronger than excitement could be felt in the air. Maybe it was the essence of the movie—after all, prayer is a powerful weapon.
The story of War Room reveals how prayer can be more than a few fleeting words to God; it can be a strategic battle against the enemy.
As a man named Tony Jordan cheats in his career and nearly cheats on his wife, Elizabeth, financial and marriage struggles surround the family. Enter a woman named Miss Clara, who challenges Elizabeth to set up a "war room," a private place to pray for God's help in life's battles. Will this change things?
The makers of Facing the GiantsFireproof and Courageous, the Kendrick Brothers created this film on the power of prayer in hopes that people will leave the movie desiring a more active prayer life.
"It's one thing to go to the movies and see eye candy ... but we want to leave them with something more eternal," director Alex Kendrick said.
And those who are part of the movie have already witnessed eternal results.
A young man who led the jump rope sequences in the film, teaching kids how to double-dutch, came to the producers at the end of the movie and said: "I want what you're talking about to be a part of my life. Would you pray for me?" The man accepted Jesus Christ as his Savior.
Others, who already had a relationship with God, were also touched by the making of the film.
Best-selling author and speaker Priscilla Shirer took on the lead acting role as a novice. Shirer, who is a real-life mother of three boys, plays Elizabeth, the mom who goes from struggling to keep her family together to a woman who gives her burdens to God in a war room, where she lines her written prayers along the walls. Yet Shirer learned more than just acting techniques.
"(This movie) made me more strategic, deliberate and intentional with my prayers ... instead of just being consistent," Shirer said.
But the reality of a war room extends far beyond the movie.
"Oh, my war room, it gets worn out," said Karen Abercrombie of Mooresville, North Carolina. "And just working on this piece brought everything home in a deeper, meaningful way."
Abercrombie plays Miss Clara, but was originally denied the part because she appeared too young for the role. She auditioned dressed in character and through her perseverance landed the role.
Alex Kendrick and the rest of the cast and crew also demonstrated perseverance in the making of the film, working 14-hour days week after week.
But despite the long days, he says he would do it again. And he's especially grateful to the churches that came alongside them in filming.
The pastors around Charlotte, North Carolina, jumped in to help when they heard about a movie uniting people in prayer. Around 85 churches assisted in the making of War Room, providing transportation and homemade meals, such as "world famous" ribs bigger than a paper plate.
"The Bible's clear we're supposed to love one another," co-producer Gary Wheeler said. "And really these churches in this area—that's what they did."
As War Room tells a story often too true in today's society—a family that seems to have it all from the outside but is crumbling within—it reveals the need for intervention. The kind of intervention that involves people asking God for help.
"I don't think it's by chance that God's going to use this movie to call people to their knees," said Shirer. "(Nor do) we really believe prayer works, because if we really did, we would actually pray and pray more. Prayer is what invites the power of heaven into the circumstances of earth."
War Room hit theaters Friday, Aug. 28.

I Am Going To Redeem The Times That You Said, "NO!" To Me - Bill Yount

Posted: 02 Sep 2015
I believe we all have missed one of those golden opportunities that we said "no" to by being led by feelings instead of faith. Can our disobedience ever be redeemed?

Recently, I blew a silver trumpet to open up a meeting. The Lord showed me that "silver" represents "redemption." When I blew that silver trumpet, I sensed the Lord saying: "I am going to redeem the times that you said, 'No!' to Me! I am going to give you other opportunities! Other opportunities that are going to cause you to forget your regrets.

When I look at you, I see no regrets, for there are other opportunities I am bringing your way. And if you will say 'yes' to these opportunities and follow through, it will produce a hundred-fold first fruits now, more than they would have yesterday or years gone by.

The Lord says, "This is a turn-around day! This is your turn-around day! I am going to turn things around for you. I am going to turn many of you around who have said 'NO' to Me to say 'YES' with joy. For you are now going to delight to do My will. Forget the past. Your past is not your present. The winter is over and gone.

And what has been working against you in the past is now going to work for you! Rejoice, for I have greater opportunities coming for you now than ever before. Opportunities that will restore to you the years the cankerworm and palmerworm have eaten from you."

Biblical Preppers: How to Ready Your Family for the End of Days

Preppers and the Redemption: How to Ready Your Family for What Lies Ahead

“Guard yourself and watch your soul very well.” (Deuteronomy 4:9)
With the recent stock market slumpthe dangerous Iran deal, the end of the shmittah year and the final blood moon coinciding, preppers, also known as survivalists, can look to the Bible just in case things get worse before they get better.
Preppers are people who actively prepare for local, national and international emergencies. They were once thought of as conspiracy theorist crazies stocking up hundreds of cans of beans and dozens of rounds of ammunition. Today, preppers are gaining credibility in the increasingly chaotic world in which we live.
Preparation is nothing new to the Jewish people. The Israelite slaves prepared for the exodus from Egypt by taking a year-old lamb into their homes on the 10th of the Hebrew month of Nisan and slaughtering it on the 14th day (Exodus 12:3-6). The Jews prepared for three days at the foot of Mount Sinai in advance of receiving the Torah (Exodus 19:15). And today, Sabbath observant Jews prepare in advance each week for the Sabbath.
If it’s prudent to be prepared, what are some reasonable acts average people can take to ready themselves for what might be coming, as the possible End of Days approaches?
Most people think of food and water first. Water is critical and should be the first thing you store. Calculate a gallon (4 liters) of water per person per day. For most people, that’s going to take a lot of space. As an example, you would need 18 six-packs of 2-liter bottles of water for a family of four for two weeks.
The end is near. Are you ready?
Although recommendations vary from three days to six months, typical advice is to have two weeks worth of canned or other non-perishable food, such as peanut butter, dried fruit, nuts and seeds set aside for emergency use. Honey doesn’t spoil and some people suggest having salt as part of your emergency food kit.
What about cash? Depending on your cash flow, it’s good to keep cash in small bills in a safe place, because banks and ATMs may shut down. Food and fuel shortages could also cause sharp increases in prices.
Fuel could turn out to be life-saving. Keep your car’s fuel tank full and consider storing extra gasoline if you have a way to do so safely. Consider purchasing a generator and definitely keep candles with matches and lighters in your prep kit.
Other things to consider including with your household preparation kit – essential medications, basic first aid supplies and toilet paper. If you live in Israel, it’s important to make sure your gas masks are up to date and are the right size for children.
None of these suggestions are intended to cause alarm and are prudent steps most anyone can take. If you research prepping, it’s easy to get overwhelmed at the number of things that are possible to do to prepare. Don’t get caught up in apocalyptic scenarios.
Bottom line, take reasonable precautions and have faith, along with having a Bible, a prayer book and other religious articles at the ready.
