Today's Israel Inspiration

For over 700 years, Jews were forbidden from entering the Cave of the Patriarchs in Hebron (where our forefathers are buried) and would pray from outside on the building’s steps. All this changed when one brave Rabbi drove to the city during the Six Day War, believing that Israeli soldiers had preceded him, after the triumphant liberation of Jerusalem the day before. Rabbi General Shlomo Goren entered the city of 40,000 Arabs who simply surrendered to him! The Rabbi went straight to the Cave of the Patriarchs, and shot the lock off the door, opening it once and for all for the Jewish people and all faiths. Hear more gripping stories of a formidable man, who fought for the soul of the Holy Land.

The mass shooting tragedy that has shaken Charleston and the nation has caused the a pastor of a neighboring Southern Baptist Church to condemn the attack as demonic in origin.
"Everyone together—white, black, Hispanic, everybody—we're coming together in unity to see this not only [as] an attack on people, but an attack on the body of Christ," said Keith Biggs, associate pastor of Citadel Square Baptist Church, which is on the same block as Mother Emanuel AME Church, where the shooting occurred. "I mean, who can walk into a church and sit for an hour and have prayer, and then just begin to kill everybody?"
Suspected shooter Dylann Roof, who is white, made anti-black statements to his African-American victims right before killing them, according to law enforcement officials. But though police are investigating the attack as a hate crime, Biggs says bigotry and hatred is just the tip of the iceberg.
"As everybody said on TV, it goes deeper than just hate. To me, this is something that's very demonic to be able to do that. It's a big spiritual warfare, so we're coming together," he said. "We've just got to pray and seek direction, see how we can help one another, see how we can pray to get this action and so forth out of here. Everybody is very calm right now and just looking for answers."
Meanwhile, Southern Baptist Convention (SBC) President Ronnie Floyd issued a statement echoing Biggs' sentiment. The statement was joined by Philadelphia pastor K. Marshall Williams, president of the SBC National African American Fellowship; California pastor A.B. Vines, NAAF's immediate past president; and Russell Moore, president of the SBC Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission.
"The brutal massacre of those in prayer at Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church should shock the conscience of every person," part of the statement read. "There is hardly a more vivid picture of unmasked evil than the murder of those in prayer.
"This act of bloodshed is wicked and more than wicked. It is literally satanic, as our Lord taught us that the devil is a 'murderer from the beginning'" (John 8:44).
Meanwhile, the SBC statement, Biggs, and many other faith leaders are unanimous on what the Church needs to be doing now:
"Pray."

Charleston Attack: When God Is at Work, Satan Reacts

Charleston Attack: When God Is at Work, Satan Reacts

"There is no greater coward than a criminal who enters a house of God and slaughters innocent people engaged in the study of Scripture." So said NAACP President and CEO Cornell William Brooks, condemning Wednesday night's shooting in Charleston, South Carolina.
Emanuel AME Church, the scene of the attack, is historically African-American, tracing its roots to 1816. One of its founders tried to organize a slave revolt in 1822; white landowners had his church burned in revenge. Members worshipped underground until after the Civil War. Wednesday's shooting took the life of the church's pastor and eight others, and has been labeled a hate crime (For more, see Nick Pitts's article Tragedy in Charleston).

Wherever God is at work, Satan reacts. His first strategy is "to steal and kill and destroy" (John 10:10). When Jesus' movement gained a national following, Satan led Judas to betray our Lord (John 13:2, 27). When Peter preached at Pentecost and 3,000 were converted, Satan incited the religious authorities to arrest them and demand that they cease preaching (Acts 4). When Paul's ministry reached global status, Satan led the authorities to arrest and eventually behead him.

More people are coming to Christ today than at any time in human history, and Satan is again responding through violence.  According to John Allen, longtime Vatican journalist, 80 percent of all acts of religious discrimination around the world are directed at Christians. Ninety percent of all religious martyrs are Christians. Terror attacks against Christians escalated 309 percent between 2003 and 2010.

Persecution is strongest where the kingdom is advancing the fastest. In the Muslim world, where more have come to Christ in the past 15 years than the previous 15 centuries, attacks on Christians are more common than ever before. Newsweekrecently reported: "In recent years the violent oppression of Christian minorities has become the norm in Muslim-majority nations stretching from West Africa and the Middle East to South Asia and Oceania." The magazine then stated, "The conspiracy of silence surrounding this violent expression of religious intolerance has to stop." (For more, see my book Respected to Irrelevant to Dangerous.)

Persecution against Christians is increasing in China, where as many as 100,000 people come to Christ every day. It is increasing in sub-Saharan Africa, where as many as 28,000 come to Christ daily. It is increasing in Cuba, where more than a million have come to Christ in the last decade. The pattern is clear.

How can we pray for our persecuted brothers and sisters? Acts 12:5 tells us that after Peter was arrested by Herod, "earnest prayer for him was made to God by the church." Their intercession was passionate: "earnest" translates ektenos, fervent, zealous. It was continual: "prayer was made" is in the imperfect tense, literally "prayer was constantly being made." It was specific: "for him." And it was collective: "by the church."

God is calling his people to pray passionately, continually, specifically and collectively for Emanuel AME Church and for all who are risking their lives to follow Jesus. And he has calling us to pray in the same way for the spiritual awakening we desperately need.

Charles Spurgeon: "I know of no better thermometer to your spiritual temperature than this, the measure of the intensity of your prayer." What is your spiritual temperature today?

Netanyahu Sees Rare King David-era Inscription

Netanyahu Sees Rare King David-era Inscription

JERUSALEM, Israel -- At a time when many in the world question Israel's right to the land, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu weighed in on an extraordinary archaeological find from the time of biblical King David.
Archaeologists Prof. Yosef Garfinkel, with the Hebrew University Institute of Archaeology, and Saar Ganor, with the Israel Antiquities Authority, showed Netanyahu the rare 3,000-year-old inscription at his office in Jerusalem this week.
They told him that until five years ago there were no known inscriptions from the Kingdom of Judah in the 10th century B.C.
"Today we have four inscriptions -- one from Jerusalem, one from Beit Shemesh, and two from Khirbet Qeiyafa," Garfinkel said in an interview with CBN News.
Archaeologists say these inscriptions have revolutionized thinking about that time period.  It wasn't a prehistoric era with illiterate people. They clearly had writing skills and commercial activity.
The ancient writing appeared on pottery shards discovered in Khirbet Qeiyafa, identified with Sha'arim in the Bible in the Valley of Elah. That's the place where the Bible says a young David fought and killed the Philistine giant, Goliath.
Conservators worked almost a year in the laboratory to put the more than 100 pieces of the pot together.
"The inscription read: "the estate of Eshba'al son of Beda."
Garfinkel said this particular find provided a fascinating name.
"The name Beda is unique. We don't know what it is but Eshba'al is  very well-known name. It appears in the Bible a few times but all the time it's mentioned it's from the time of King David," Garfinkel told CBN News.
"There is the famous Eshba'al, son of King Saul. He ruled for two years and then his head was cut off and brought to David in Hebron. But this is not our guy, we have another Eshba'al," he said.
Eshba'al means "man of ba'al," which was a Canaanite god.
Because the Israelites didn't like ba'al, Garfinkel said that one of Saul's son's name was changed to Ishbosheth, man of shame in the book of Samuel.  He told CBN News that all Eshba'als in the Bible and archaeology are from the time of King David.
"This is fascinating that you see the correlation between biblical text and archaeological text," he said.
For years, some experts said there was no proof that King David existed. But Garfinkel and Ganor's work at Khirbet Qeiyafa helped proved skeptics were wrong.
Netanyahu said the inscription attested "to what happened here, in this country, in the time of King David."

Gospel Singer Marcus Stanley Has One Message for Charleston Shooting Suspect

Join us on our new podcast each weekday for an interesting story, well told, from Charisma News. Listen at charismapodcastnetwork.com.

Dylan Roof, a man who unleashed a shooting rampage on a Charleston AME church, has one comment on his Facebook profile picture.
It's from a black man, gospel musician Marcus Stanley, who has been shot himself eight times.
"I don't look at you with the eyes of hatred, or judge you by your appearance or race, but I look at you as a human being that made a horrible decision to take the lives of 9 living & breathing people," Stanley writes. The Facebook page has since been removed.
Roof's crimes have been compared to the bombing of the Sixteenth Street Baptist Church in Birmingham, Alabama, by members of the KKK.
Dylan-Roof-CommentInstead of attacking Roof, verbally shredding him to pieces over his sin, Stanley writes out love instead.
Looking to John 3:16-17, we as Christians believe that Christ came for anyone who believes in Him, and Stanley highlights that Roof is not exempt from this love.
And then Stanley writes out the words millions have said before, hoping Roof can follow in their footsteps:
"I love you Dylann... even in the midst of the darkness and pain you've caused, but more importantly HE loves you.
"If you would like to make that confession, then repeat these words.
Dear God in heaven, I come to you in the name of Jesus. I acknowledge to You that I am a sinner, and I am sorry for my sins and the life that I have lived; I need your forgiveness.
I believe that your only begotten Son Jesus Christ shed His precious blood on the cross at Calvary and died for my sins, and I am now willing to turn from my sin.
You said in Your Holy Word, Romans 10:9 that if we confess the Lord our God and believe in our hearts that God raised Jesus from the dead, we shall be saved.
Right now I confess Jesus as the Lord of my soul. With my heart, I believe that God raised Jesus from the dead. This very moment I accept Jesus Christ as my own personal Savior and according to His Word, right now I am saved.
Thank you Jesus for your unlimited grace which has saved me from my sins. I thank you Jesus that your grace never leads to license, but rather it always leads to repentance. Therefore Lord Jesus transform my life so that I may bring glory and honor to you alone and not to myself.
Thank you Jesus for dying for me and giving me eternal life.
Amen."

Netanyahu: Attack on Galilee Church is Attack on All Israel

Netanyahu: Attack on Galilee Church is Attack on All Israel

Friday, June 19, 2015 |  Israel Today Staff
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Thursday said that the shameful arson attack against the Church of the Multiplication at Tabgha on the shores of the Sea of Galilee was not only an attack against Christians, but against all of Israel.
“The shocking arson of the church is an attack on all of us,” said Netanyahu in an official statement. “Israel’s freedom of religion is a cornerstone of our values and it is anchored in the law. We will mete out justice to those responsible for this atrocious act. We have no room for hatred and intolerance in our society.”
The attack causes serious damage to the church. Police determined the fire was set intentionally after finding Hebrew graffiti vowing to destroy idol worshippers and discovering that the blaze had started from several different locations around the facility.
Sixteen Jewish youth were briefly arrested and brought in for questioning, but were later released due to a lack of evidence.
Nevertheless, Netanyahu, President Reuven Rivlin and many more government officials were adamant that those responsible would be brought to justice. Most agreed that not only had the attack on Israeli Christians been unacceptable, but had stained the Jewish state.
“Whoever lights fire to a church is not only an idiot who lacks respect for religion — he is also a terrorist who is severely damaging the State of Israel. Law enforcement authorities should act with abundant severity toward whoever is found guilty,” wrote former Foreign Minister and Yisrael Beiteinu party chief Avigdor Lieberman.
Public Security Minister Gilad Erdan called the arson a “cowardly and vile act that I vigorously condemn. We will not allow anyone to shake the coexistence between religions and ethnic groups in Israel.”
Interior Minister Silvan Shalom called the head of the church, Father Matthias Karl, to let him know that “a hate crime like this is unbelievable and unacceptable. I apologize personally and on behalf of the state for this extremist attack.”
Religious leaders, too, were outraged. Chief Rabbi David Lau explained that “the actions taken this morning, apparently by ignorant and violent cowards, are completely at odds with the values of Judaism and humanity.”
Israel’s Army Radio spoke to a number of average Israelis who expressed similar sentiments. One of those callers was IDF Lt. (ret.) Shadi Khalloul, himself an Israel Christian, who concurred that “if in this case Jewish zealots are fingered, then, first of all, they clearly don’t represent all the Jews.”
