JERUSALEM, Israel – For thousands of years, Jews have prayed at the Western Wall in Jerusalem. It was part of the outside retaining wall of the second Jewish Temple during the time of Jesus. Now, according to the United Nations Security Council, it's occupied Palestinian territory.
Many in Israel and the U.S. are waiting to see what other surprises President Obama has in store during his last weeks in office, following the U.S. failure to block the UNSC resolution condemning Israeli settlements.
"This resolution will go down as another shameful resolution but it will be thrown into the dustbin of history," said Israeli Education Minister Naftali Bennett.
Just before Christmas, the U.S. abstained from voting against UNSC resolution 2334 condemning Israeli settlements in biblical Judea and Samaria, also known as the West Bank. In doing so, the U.S. abandoned its long-time policy of vetoing anti-Israel resolutions.
"It is unfortunate to see someone who claims to be a friend, this administration, basically abandon us in such a profound way," Bennett told CBN News.
In a lengthy speech last Wednesday, Secretary of State John Kerry argued that condemning settlements was the best way to promote Israeli-Palestinian peace.
Bennett said the resolution was like a "self-inflicted wound" for the world.
"It gave backwind to thousands of terrorists around the world that want to destroy Israel because when they see the U.N. taking such a crazy resolution against Israel, essentially saying that Jerusalem is occupied territory," Bennett said.
Palestinians were pleased with the U.N. decision. They hope it will force Israel to give them land without giving anything in exchange.
"We know now that it was a pre-meditated move by the Obama administration, together with the Palestinians, against Israel," Bennett said.
Israel says it has evidence it will give incoming President Trump that the Obama administration helped write the resolution.
According to a report by the Middle East Media Research Institute, the Egyptian daily Al-Youm Al Sabi published the minutes of a secret meeting between Kerry and National Security Advisor Susan Rice and PLO Executive Committee Secretary and chief negotiator Saeb Erekat.
"The minutes of the meeting…reveals that the sides agreed to collaborate regarding a resolution on the settlements," the article says according to MEMRI. "The American side focused on coordination of positions between Washington and Ramallah regarding the resolution on the settlements, which was brought to a vote in the Security Council and adopted."
It's not clear what can be done to reverse the effects of the resolution. It's not often in our modern world that people are criminally prosecuted under the charge of witchcraft. But it happened recently in Nepal, according to a report from World Watch Monitor. Five Christians in Nepal were charged with witchcraft and violence. Four were convicted and sentenced to five years in prison.
According to the article, the charge was based on an event that took place months ago when a woman with a mental illness visited the church, looking for help. After she was prayed over, she left.
This comes just after another court case involving eight Christians was dropped. They were charged under Nepal's new anti-proselytizing law.
Despite the fact that Nepal is a secular state, the status of religious freedom isn't cut and dry. The anti-proselytizing law is the first clue. But, as we can see from this most recent story, when that law doesn't apply, other ways can be found to persecute Christians.
Dyann Romeijn of Vision Beyond Borders says much of the tension has to do with a growing Hindu-nationalist sentiment, influenced by India. Even though it's legal to be a Christian, and it's legal even to leave another religion to become a Christian, it is frowned upon.
Romeijn says, "I think that's what they're trying to do is silence that Christian voice. [If] people can't hear, then they have no opportunity to know the truth."
Regardless of the motive of behind the law or false accusations targeting Christians, the foundation of these situations is always the same thing.
"I think overall, it comes down to the same thing we see around the world, is that it's a spiritual persecution, that a lot of times they're not as worried about cultural differences when they come in different ways, but when it comes in with the truth of the gospel, I just think we see everything rise up against that."
But, she points out, there have been moments in history where Christianity was more welcomed in this country.
After the earthquake in 2015, Christian organizations were able to reach out and meet the many physical needs that arose. It's in these types of situations that people better recognize their spiritual needs as well. The impact of that time is still going on today. It's hard to know just how big the Christian population is.
"There is a lot of growth in Christianity taking place in these countries, and I do believe we'll see an uptick in those numbers. Sometimes it's difficult for people to claim to be Christians in countries like this in regular reporting because it puts them at greater risk," she says.
Reacting to changing environments
Vision Beyond Borders works in several countries—each with its own level of religious freedoms. These situations can change rapidly, so they work closely with their contacts to best meet the needs at any given time.
"What we try to do is put them at as little risk as possible. So, whatever help it is they're looking for at that time and the ways it's most helpful, whether it be Scriptures, whether it be supporting financially the work or bringing teams over to help with projects and Bible schools and things like that."

Israeli Hikers Discover Rare Engravings

JERUSALEM, Israel – Three Israeli hikers discovered ancient engravings of a menorah and a cross in the Judean plains over recent the Hanukkah holiday, the Israel Antiquities Authority said on Tuesday.
Mickey Barkal, Sefi Givoni and Ido Meroz, all members of the Israel Caving Club, were exploring a water cistern, when they found the engravings on the chalk bedrock of the walls.
"That's how we came to this cave, which is extremely impressive, with rock-carved niches and engravings on the wall," said Meroz, according to an IAA statement.
"Just before we were about to return we suddenly noticed an engraving that at first glance seemed to be a menorah. When we realized this is an ancient depiction of a menorah, we became very excited. Its appearance was quite distinct," Meroz said.
The hikers reported the find to the Israel Antiquities Authority.
The menorah engraving has a base with three feet and evidently portrays the menorah that stood in the Temple during the Second Temple period. A cross was engraved near the menorah and third engraving resembles a key, "characteristic of antiquity."
There was also a columbarium – niches used to raise doves – nearby. Doves were part of the Temple sacrifice.
"It is rare to find a wall engraving of a menorah, and this exciting discovery, which was symbolically revealed during the Hanukkah holiday, substantiates the scientific research regarding the Jewish nature of the settlement during the Second Temple period," said IAA archaeologist Sa'ar Ganor.
According to Ganor there are buildings and hiding places from the second century AD – from the time of the Bar Kokhba revolt, as well as buildings from the Byzantine period.
"The menorah was probably etched in the cistern after the water installation was hewn in the bedrock – maybe by inhabitants of the Jewish settlement that was situated there during the Second Temple period and the time of Bar Kokhba – and the cross was etched later on during the Byzantine period, most likely in the fourth century CE [AD]," Ganor said.
The IAA said only two other engravings of menorahs like this have been found in the area. The exact location of the engravings was not made public to protect them.
The hikers who discovered them will be given good citizenship certificates and invited to participate in upcoming IAA archaeological surveys.

The implosion of the friendship of U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) and President-elect Donald Trump during the 2016 Republican presidential primary was one of the biggest stories of the year.
And now, it seems to be just a bad memory.
During an interview with Washington, D.C., talk radio host Larry O'Connor of WMAL-AM, Cruz provided some unsolicited analysis of the president-elect's Cabinet-level picks so far:
"I tell you that I have been really pleased and really impressed with President-elect Trump. This is a serious cabinet, a cabinet of highly qualified individuals, and it is a cabinet of strong conservatives.
"The president-elect should be commended for bringing together a team of all-stars. I think that bodes really well for the commitment to carry through on the promises we made."
The off-the-cuff comments followed Cruz' comments about the Senate vote, 51-48, to repeal Obamacare earlier in the day. The Texas senator said it was a "historic" opportunity to "do a great deal of good" for the country.
"It was one of the fundamental reasons why I ran for the Senate and promised the people of Texas that I would fight everyday to repeal Obamacare," he said. "I cannot tell you how gratifying it is to see us on the verge of delivering on that promise."
He also announced that he and Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) had introduced a bill to cut off funds to the United Nations until it rescinded UN Security Council Resolution 2334, and that he had introduced legislation to cut funds to the Palestinian Authority. He expects Congress to pass a resolution reaffirming the U.S. commitment to moving its embassy to Jerusalem in the coming days.
