Unapologetic Christian Ben Carson Says Faith 'Helps Me Serve the Nation Better'

WASHINGTON — Leading a Washington bureaucracy and serving as a cabinet secretary isn't how Ben Carson thought he'd spend his retirement, but the famed pediatric neurosurgeon tells CBN News he's starting to see why God placed him in this unlikely position.

"As a pediatric neurosurgeon I spent a lot of time trying to give kids a second chance – operating for hours and hours, sometimes all night," he tells CBN News.

"But then being faced with having to send them back into a horrible environment with mold and lead and vermin – all kind of stuff – it was a horrible feeling for me – now I have a chance to actually do something about that environment," he continued.

One year into the job, he says God is revealed why He placed him there by taking Carson to the Bible.

"There's a verse in the Bible, Proverbs 29:18, that says, 'without a vision the people perish,' and I look around and see a lot of people who just are not thriving," Secretary Carson said.

Connecting Needs With Resources

That verse sparked the birth of EnVision Centers: community hubs connecting people's needs with resources that can help.

They bring together public, private and faith-based groups already providing the services needed.

The centers are designed to lead people to self-sufficiency through education and wellness while offering support along the way.

Ending the Cycle of Dependency

Carson is working to end the cycle of generations who have known nothing but living on government assistance.

"We have to provide a mechanism whereby they can climb the ladder of opportunity," he said.

As secretary, Carson has felt the belt tightening conservatives demand of the Trump administration.

The White House proposes cutting HUD's budget by nearly nine billion dollars next year.

"Would I rather have more money? Yes," he said with a laugh. "I could do more, no question about it."

However, his concerns about the national debt and his desire to make the agency operate more efficiently – like a business – encourage him to rise to the challenge.

"Our new definition of success is not how many people we get in these programs, but how many people we get out of them in a self-sufficient, powerful way so that they become a driving force right here in our own country," he said.

The conservative found himself in an embarrassing situation when he was forced to cancel an order for an expensive dining room suite for his office, once it was revealed it would cost taxpayers $31,000.

In a statement Carson said "no one was more surprised" than him.

He's also caught grief for daring to study the Bible and exercise his Christian faith as a member of President Trump's cabinet.

He attends the weekly cabinet Bible study led by Ralph Drollinger of Capitol Ministries.

No Apologies for His Faith

An atheist group sued HUD to get information about the study and how Carson exercises his faith in public life.

Unapologetic, Carson responded on social media, writing, "It is my faith that helps me serve the nation even better."

"We have to have a foundation for who we are," he told CBN News. "If you're going to have free exercise of it – it doesn't mean you only get to talk about it in church because sitting in the pews of a church and keeping things contained there is not going to help feed the hungry, clothe the naked or take care of the imprisoned or do any of the things that we actually need to do so your faith has to be a living component of everything that you do," he said.

He also wrote that Americans have to resist attacks on our spirituality at all costs

"We can't allow ourselves to be just marginalized," he said.

"You know, those who impose the political correctness agenda, you know, they are winning. They're having their way, they're changing our society away from what it used to be and that frightens me," he continued.

He says America needs to do a better job of developing its people and he understands the responsibility he's been given.

"You know, housing is an important foundation for the development of an individual and having that security is so important."

Recently as I sat with the Lord, I heard the Lord ask a question. "Can you smell the smell of fresh bread?" Instantly I had a vision of a huge room with huge baking ovens and I saw Jesus and the angelic hosts pulling out fresh, huge, hot bread out of the ovens.

The smell was so fresh, the smell so inviting, the smell so full of life. The word "FRESH" just reverberated through my spirit. There was such invitation in the atmosphere and invitation to come into the place of FRESH BREAD.

Matthew 4:4 burned in my spirit, "Man does not live by bread alone but by every word that flows from the mouth of God."

"Bread alone will not satisfy, but true life is found in every word which constantly goes forth from God's mouth." Matthew 4:4 (The Passion Translation)

This is such an incredible season right now to receive the revelation of His heart, deeper revelation of His Word and hear the voice of God. The Lord is bringing His people into a deeper dependence and hunger to live completely, focused wholeheartedly upon what He says, the revelation He releases and not what any other voice or circumstance speaks. The Lord is bringing the people of God to such a higher place of insight, revelation, wisdom and clarity. To live in a deeper place of the revelation of the Word and revelation of His Word.

The Lord is working deeply within His people to shift and concrete reality. There is a deep fire the Lord is igniting and increasing, that His people do not live by what is seen or told in the natural world but by every Word that flows from His mouth. A fire within their hearts and fire in their bellies, a deep resolve, conviction and fortification to live in the true reality and the reality is living in the word, perspective and truth of Scripture and what He speaks over every circumstance and situation.

The vision continued, and I saw many in the body of Christ feasting on yesterday's bread. The way it was, what God had said. I saw the eyes of Jesus roaming the earth, looking for those who would pursue the fresh bread. Those who would intentionally position themselves to receive the fresh bread of revelation He is releasing.

I felt so strongly that God is changing the subject. There was such an incredible, beautiful sense that surrounded me that God was changing subjects, but I saw different situations and circumstances causing people to run back to yesterday's bread. A lack of understanding, a lack of circumstances matching up with what God had said, disappointment, disillusionment, fear, doubt, weariness. I saw many "hung up" on what didn't turn out or happen the way they thought or the way they thought God had said it would, and it was keeping many away from the place of receiving the fresh bread that He was wanting to release to them now.

I saw many feasting upon this bread that was dry, moldy, crumbly and they were attempting to still feast upon this bread, and I heard the Holy Spirit say, "The revelation that they are feasting upon is for another season. Because of fear, disappointment and unanswered questions, they are attempting to bring the old, dry, moldy bread into today, but it is no longer for today. I have NEW BREAD for today. I am calling My people to live in a place of freshness. I am calling My people to leave behind the unanswered questions, and praise Me, and know that I am good, and in the release and receiving of the fresh bread, healing, peace and a settledness will come. Fear is keeping many bound on yesterday's bread, but I have FRESH BREAD of revelation and what I am speaking, that is going to release greater life and increase in the life of My people."

Stewarding the Bread

I felt the Lord is not only inviting us into a deeper place of fresh revelation of what He is speaking and His Word (hence the enemy is attempting to keep many from that place) but the Lord is teaching His people in greater ways the stewardship of the bread. How to stay in a place of hearing, seeing and discerning the fresh Word spoken from the Lord and not feast upon yesterday's bread. To daily be positioned to hear and see, to feast and live upon every Word, He speaks!

When I heard the Lord say "Can you smell the smell of fresh bread?" - it was a question of discernment. "Can you smell the increase of revelation of who I am, My Word and revelation I am releasing?" And the sense surrounded me strongly that what you smell draws and awakens hunger.

As we dive deeper into His presence and smell the invitation He is releasing and smell the fresh revelation He is wanting to release, it is going to increase hunger. Hunger to live in the purity of living upon His word alone. Feasting not upon anything else but what He says.

There is a radical increase of HUNGER to hear from the Lord, His Word and what He is speaking, to hear the voice of God that is being released in the body of Christ as we smell the invitation to receive the FRESH BREAD of REVELATION He is releasing.

Accepting the invitation of His heart will see you feast on loaves of the fresh bread of revelation of who Jesus is, His Word and what He is saying, BIGGER than you have feasted on before. These loaves were HUGE.

Key Position

The key way to position yourself to hear is opening the Word of God. Approaching the Word of God with expectation that you are about to feast knowing that the Lord has FRESH REVELATION from the Word that is going to be released to given to you.

I talked this prophetic word over with a friend, and he saw the STEAM OF THE SPIRIT upon the Scriptures; the freshness of the revelation of the Word, waiting for you to receive and eat. Oh the joy, the filling, the hunger that shall increase within you. Many of you will be left in awe and wonder of the joy in the revelation of the Word that He is going to release to you. So fresh, the more you eat, the more you feast, the more ravenously hungry you shall become and the revelation that the Word of God is ALIVE and POWERFUL (Hebrews 4:12), will burn in you and through you and in the feasting upon the fresh bread He has for you, I see MANY shackles of the heart, mind and soul suddenly falling off as the lies, strongholds and things that have kept you in captivity come face to face with the Word of God and cannot stand and have root any longer.

"For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart." Hebrews 4:12 (ESV)

The hungry SHALL be fed! Let us be people who live DAILY in the reality of Matthew 4:4 and feast on the FRESH bread of heaven.

What would you say if I told you that committee chairs were for sale in Congress? And what would you say if I told you that many members of Congress spend far more time on the telephone raising money than on the jobs that the people of their states actually elected them to do?

There is a reason why so many Americans absolutely hate Congress. At this moment, Congress has an approval rating of just 15 percent, and approval ratings for Congress have been at extremely low levels for a very long time. We all know that Congress has become completely corrupt, that it is completely unresponsive to the American people and that it has become all about the money. Many have asked why I would want to become part of such a corrupt institution, and I respond by saying that it is time to take our government back.

In the very close race that I am currently involved in, there is an exceedingly clear choice between politics as usual and someone that is committed to going to Washington and turning the system completely upside down.

I believe that we need to send people to Washington that will be willing to stand up to the leadership of both parties. Below, I am going to share some things that a current member of Congress is saying about the corruption in D.C. that will blow your mind. Many would suggest that the corruption is so pervasive that it is useless to try to do anything about it.

But I say that if “we the people” can get Donald Trump into the White House, then “we the people” can also take Congress back.

U.S. Representative Ken Buck was elected to Congress in 2014, and he recently authored a book that is shaking Washington to the core. The following is what USA Today had to say about it…

And the second-term Republican is unlikely to make many more with Tuesday’s publication of his tell-all book, Drain the Swamp: How Washington is Worse Than You Think, co-authored with Bill Blankschaen.

In it, Buck says lawmakers are mostly “fat and happy alligators who feel pretty darn comfortable in the swamp.” He casts Republican leaders as “playground bullies” who go to great lengths, including yanking subcommittee chairmanships and canceling lawmakers’ overseas trips, to punish dissenters. And he decries a “pay-to-play” system in which plum committee assignments and leadership slots are tied to lawmakers’ fundraising skills instead of their policy expertise.

One of the things that Buck has revealed that upset me the most is the fact that committee chairs are essentially for sale in Washington. Here is a brief excerpt from Buck’s book…

Here’s how it works for Republicans. If you want to serve on a committee, you have to raise money for the National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC). The amount varies depending on the committee and role. For example, to serve on a B or C level committee, a GOP House freshman member must raise $220,000 every two years … Veteran members on A committees must raise more than twice that amount – $450,000 … If you become the chair of a B committee – congratulations – you’re now expected to raise $875,000 a year for the NRCC. Chairing an A committee means you must raise $1.2 million.

In order to raise such large amounts of money, members of Congress are expected to spend approximately four hours a day on the telephone raising money. This is something that I wrote an extended article about last week.

I have already pledged that I am not going to participate in that system and that I am not going to make those calls.

I believe that members of Congress should be spending their time in Washington doing what they were elected to do, and if you want to see this current system dismantled I hope that you will stand with us.

Because the Washington money machine is not behind me, we are funding our campaign entirely through grassroots donations. Hundreds upon hundreds of patriots all over the nation have helped us surge toward the top of this race, and if you would like to join the team here is how you can do that…

If we do not stand up to the corruption in Washington, it will just continue to get worse and worse and worse.

That is why we need to send fighters to D.C., and I am being very bold about the fact that I am not going there to play nice. I am going there to turn over the tables and to turn the current corrupt system upside down, and party leadership is not going to like that at all.
According to the Hill, those that do not play along with the current corrupt system often pay a very high penalty…

And what if you, as a Member of Congress, decide not to play along? For starters, you won’t be able to use the NRCC call suites that are conveniently located two blocks from the House office buildings, and the leadership will put out the word to the K Street lobbying community that they are not to donate or raise funds for you if they wish to stay in the leadership’s good graces. If you’re particularly rebellious, you’ll be stripped of your committee assignments, and maybe even be challenged in a primary by a leadership-backed candidate.

If they try to do those things to me, I still will not back down.

After all, I am not going there to be a career politician.

Instead, I am going there to be part of a national movement to take Congress back for the American people.

In his new book, Ken Buck spoke very eloquently about the need to drain the swamp…

Our founders’ default position was to keep power as far from Washington as possible. We can no longer afford to ignore their wisdom. A crippling national debt exists because Washington has too much power. Corruption in the federal government is a direct result of so many people getting comfortable in the stagnant political backwaters beside the Potomac. The concentration of power in D.C. attracts the worst and tempts the best, making it extremely difficult for men and women of character to arise and lead our nation to a healthier place. The best way to drain the swamp in Washington is to remove the incentive for abuse. Swamps exist when water congregates in one place and becomes stagnant over time. Draining the swamp means draining Washington of power. Washington can’t abuse power it does not have.

If you want to help us drain the swamp, now is the time to act.

There are just over 60 days until the Republican primary on May 15th, and there are four campaigns that are bunched very closely together. We have all the momentum, but a couple of the other campaigns have raised a bit more money so far.

We need to close that gap, and we know exactly what we need to do to win this race over the last 60 days. Right now we do not have all the resources that we need to implement that plan, and that is why we really, really need your help…

The Conquest of Lachish

The Prophet Micha (Micah) warned the Jewish inhabitants of Lachish to flee the oncoming Assyrians. Lachish, located 30 miles southwest of Yerushalayim (Jerusalem), was the second largest city of the southern kingdom. Lachish was captured and demolished by Sennacherib, king of the Assyrians, during his campaign to conquer Yerushalayim during the reign of King Chizkiyahu. Excavations at Lachish, pictured above, have revealed the largest siege ramp discovered in the Middle East, as well as the largest Iron Age structure discovered in Israel. This ramp may be the same one used by the Assyrians in their conquest of this Biblical city!
