'Holy Spirit' Director Darren Wilson on Why You Should Go See Exodus

'Holy Spirit' Director Darren Wilson on Why You Should Go See Exodus

I saw the movie Exodus: Gods and Kings this weekend, and if nothing else, it certainly made me think. In fact, I spent the entire time driving home in prayer, because the film, if nothing else, will challenge you.
First thing's first, in my opinion, you should definitely see this movie in the theater. Why? Because it's one of the most massive films I've seen in a good, long while. The scale of the thing is simply enormous, and one of the things I enjoyed about it was finally being able to see that time period and this important biblical event played out in all of its 140 million-dollar budget glory.
Of course, the thing most Christians want to know going into this is probably, how did they change the story, and how did they portray God and Moses? Well, they certainly changed the story a bit, and they definitely screwed up the portrayal of God and Moses.
I find it interesting how the directors of these big-budget biblical films are, for the most part, atheists. Knowing creative people, I am certain they are not low on ideas for films to make, so why decide to make a film about a Bible story at all, if you don't believe the Bible is anything but a series of ancient writings and hocus pocus? If pressed, I think they might say that there was something inherent in the story, as a human story, that appealed to them.
This is made clear early on in Exodus, when Christian Bale's Moses tells his wife and son that, basically, the only thing you should really believe in is yourself. Having taught creativity for over a decade, I can say with certainty that all artists reveal their true beliefs in their work, no matter how much they may try to remain neutral. In a film like Exodus, which is essentially about God and men, it's only natural that director Ridley Scott's true beliefs about God will be made apparent.
As was the case with Noah, I don't have much of a problem with some of the creative licenses Scott took with the story itself. OK, the plagues happen in rapid succession, most have a seemingly natural explanation, and Moses only talks to Pharaoh twice in all that time. It's not how the Bible tells it, but I get that the story needs to keep moving, and in the end, it's still very apparent that this is all God's doing.
Hey Ridley, you want to play up the Moses/Ramses relationship? You want to make Ramses more of a short-sighted weakling than a hard-hearted tyrant? You want to ignore the fact that Moses was less the rebel warrior and much more the cowardly lion? All fine. You're adapting a story, and things have to change. Again, as a screenwriter and a filmmaker, I get it. The problem with this film is ultimately the same problem Noah had: The people making this film don't know who God really is, and therefore God looks like the reason you say you don't believe.
When I first heard Scott was going to use an 11-year-old boy as the representation of God in Exodus, I wasn't too concerned. I was willing to give him the benefit of the doubt on this one. After all, you certainly don't want to make God some invisible voice—film is a visual medium so we need something to look at. But once I saw it and saw the effect it had in conveying who God is, I realized that this decision was either a conscious shot at the God I love, or it was an unintentionally bad decision. Either way, this, I think, will be the problem most Christians will have with this movie.
Casting God as a child inherently turns God into a child. And when He rails away at Moses (who, by the way, comes across as the compassionate one in the film—just like Noah was) God is characterized as a petulant child who just wants His way. Now, when you read the biblical text, I can see how one might view God in this way based on the raw story. God is sick and tired of His chosen people being tortured as slaves, and He's going to show these Egyptians what a real God looks like while at the same time freeing His kids.
And because God decides to flex His muscles a bit, a lot of people suffer and die. If you simply take that at face value, of course you're going to think God is a borderline lunatic with a (cough) messiah complex. But you cannot understand any story in the Bible outside the context of the rest of the Bible, as well as taking into account the enormous cultural differences between 1300 B.C. and 2014 A.D. When you read the rest of the Bible, and indeed even the rest of the Exodus story, you find a God who has emotions, is hurt by His own children, but is also overwhelmingly patient and loving. He's not a schizophrenic, or "mercurial" (in other words, moody) as Christian Bale characterized him in an interview.
With Exodus, we're left, ultimately, with a flawed God who is far less compassionate than His chosen instrument, Moses. I guess it could have been worse. At least in the film God is real, however flawed, heartless and stubborn as He's portrayed. Thankfully, this isn't the true God of the Bible, the true God whom I love and is my friend, and who I trust with everything that I am.
Looking at the many reviews for Exodus, from Christians and non-Christians alike, I certainly have to agree with the majority. Exodus: Gods and Kings is an enormous, beautiful, ambitious, yet fundamentally flawed film.

God Adores the Heart of a Praying Mother

God Adores the Heart of a Praying Mother

God loves the heart of a praying mother.

Spirit Led Woman's Power Up Logo
In the Bible, God cannot resist the prayers of a godly woman, and a godly woman cannot resist communicating with God.
Based upon more than three decades of full-time ministry, I have pondered why it seems a woman can touch the heart of God, move the hand of God, change the mind of God and attract the favor of God, it seems, faster than most men. In part, I believe, it is because men often pray once and move on, accepting whatever happens as God's will, while a woman will pray unceasingly until the breakthrough manifests.
Even in the life of Christ, one consideration worthy of discussion is this: Christ had an earthly mother but not an earthly father. His emotional connection was with His mother and His spiritual connection was with His heavenly Father.
Mary was the earthly vessel chosen to carry the physical body of the living Son of God. Mary raised Christ of Nazareth, becoming concerned about Him at age 12 when He was missing from the caravan departing from Jerusalem and found debating in the temple (Luke 2:42-52). Mary heard and saw things that she kept hidden in her heart (v. 51). Eighteen years later when Christ began his public ministry, it was His mother who inspired Him to perform His first miracle—turning water into wine, when she instructed the servants, "Whatever He [Jesus] says to you, do it" (John 2:5). It was His mother who faithfully followed His ministry, along with other women named Mary, and like any caring mother who loves her son, she was with Him at the foot of the cross during His final moments on earth.
During the six hours of Christ's intense and unbearable suffering, He looked down and saw Mary standing beside His beloved disciple, John (John 19:25-27).
Perhaps at this moment, with the agony Mary felt she recalled the personal prophecy, she received from an old rabbi at the temple shortly after Christ's birth. More than 33 years prior in Jerusalem, a few hundred yards from where she was now standing, Rabbi Simeon saw the infant Christ and told Mary that a sword will pierce through her own soul also, that the thoughts of many hearts may be revealed (Luke 2:35).
Christ saw His mother, a woman of flesh and blood who had given Him life, raised Him and followed His ministry, now watching the drama of the ages unfold as scene one of the redemption story was being written in His blood. Christ saw the broken heart of His mother as John led her away just before He breathed His last. Christ loves mothers and is drawn to their tears, words and prayers. After all, He lived in the house, ate her cooking, saw her clean His clothes and His room and knew she was blessed above all women.
Mary is called the wife of Joseph and when speaking of Christ she is called "His mother" eight times in Matthew (Matt. 1:18; 2:11; 13-14; 20-21; 12:46; 13:55).
Christ's Father was heavenlybut His mother was earthly and His first miracle was motivated by His mother's instructions (see John 2:4-5). When Mary approached Christ for help, He said. "My hour [to perform miracles] has not yet come. Without responding to Him, Mary turned to the servants and said, "Whatever He says to you, do it" (John 2:4-5).
At that moment Mary gave the mission statement for Christ's entire ministry. What God tells you to dojust do it. There is a certain authority that is released when a mother turns her attention to Christ and begins to speak a word that will alter the present situation and create a miracle for the future.
The spiritual authority behind the Word of God and the name of Jesus becomes the two weapons of war in any spiritual battle. In the New Testament believers are promised both power (Acts 1:8) and authority (Luke 10:19). The power promised to believers when we receive the Holy Spirit is transferable through prayer and the laying on of hands (Acts 6:6; 8:18; 13:3; 1 Tim. 4:14). Authority, however, is released by your words.
This same type of authority can be released through your prayers, when you understand you are a member of the greatest kingdom in the universe and have been given authority over all the powers of the enemy! As Rahab's act of faith—a scarlet thread in a window—forged a family legacy of protection and destiny, you can do the same with yours.

Prayer Power for the Week of Dec. 15, 2014
This week recognize the authority the Lord has given you as a child of God and use the two weapons at your disposal when you pray. Continue to pray for the expansion of God's kingdom on earth and for revival to ignite in our own nation. Pray that God will use the outreach of many churches and ministries to win the lost during this season. Ask the Lord to show you how you can be most effective during this time. Remember our military and their families, those persecuted for their faith in Christ, and pray that our government and spiritual leaders will seek the Lord for wisdom and guidance. Continue to pray for Israel and surrounding territories during this season of celebration and tourism (John 3:16; Acts 1:8; Luke 10:19; John 2:4-5).

Netanyahu Applauds Christian IDF Soldiers; 'We Are Brothers!'

Netanyahu Applauds Christian IDF Soldiers; 'We Are Brothers!'

Monday, December 15, 2014 |  Ryan Jones  ISRAEL TODAY
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Sunday told a pre-Christmas gathering of Christians in Nazareth that they and the Jews are brothers, and that Israel will never cease to defend Christians against the forces that seek to harm and destroy them.
The gathering was organized by the Israeli Christian Recruitment Forum, whose spiritual leader, Father Gabriel Naddaf, was singled out repeatedly by Netanyahu for his untiring efforts to encourage young Christians to join the Israeli army and fully integrate with Israeli society.
“On the first of December, I took my own son, Avner, to the recruitment center in Jerusalem. He volunteered to become a combat soldier in the Israel Defense Forces. The next day…Father Naddaf took his son, Jubran, to the recruitment enter in Tiberias. He volunteered to become a combat soldier in the Israel Defense Forces,” Netanyahu recounted to strong applause.
“We are brothers!” the prime minister exclaimed. “We are partners! Christians and Jews and Druze and Muslims who together defend the State of Israel.”
Turning to a group of Christian soldiers attending the event, Netanyahu stated, “We are brothers in arms. I commend you on the will to be full partners in contributing to and defending this nation.”
Netanyahu noted that it was not always easy for Arabic-speaking Christians to so fully join themselves to Israel, but vowed that “we will firmly support you against all that would harass you.”
Echoing what Father Naddaf has been busy instilling both in local Christians and Western leaders, Netanyahu pointed out that Israel is the only place in the region where Christians find safe haven.
“Christians are suffering in the Middle East,” said the Israeli leader, recalling the recent “shrinkage and disappearance of entire Christian communities, communities that were there thousands of years, since the birth of Christianity, entire communities that are erased in one fell swoop, brutally, savagely.”
Netanyahu insisted that all who would criticize Israel and work toward the birth of a Palestinian state that would most likely fall to Hamas must “compare this [regional situation] to Israel, the only nation in the region where the Christian population is growing.”

Army Chaplain Punished for Sharing His Faith

Army Chaplain Punished for Sharing His Faith

CBN News 12.12.14

A chaplain in Georgia is under fire for talking about his Christian beliefs in an Army suicide prevention training session.

On Nov. 20, Army Chaplain Joesph Lawhorn spoke about his struggles with depression and how he used the Bible to overcome the problem.

One of the soldiers at the seminar complained to an atheist group about the presentation.

CBN News Military Correspondent Chuck Holton explains some of the struggles of being a Christian in today's military. Click player for more.

That complaint led to a letter of concern from Army Airborne and Ranger Training Brigade Commander Col. David G. Fivecoat saying he "advocated for Christianity" and that he used Christian scripture and solutions, which violates Army regulations.

But Michael Berry, the attorney representing Lawhorn, accused the person who filed the complaint of exploiting the chaplain's vulnerability.

He's also requested the Army rescind the letter of concern, saying it violated Lawhorn's constitutional rights.

"Not only is it lawful for a chaplain to talk about matters of faith and spirituality and religion in a suicide prevention training clas, but the Army policy encourages discussion of matters of faith and spiritual wellness," the Liberty Institute attorney told Fox News.

"The fact that one person in the class was offended changes nothing," Berry said.

The Psalmist compares God's showering of blessing to the flowing of dew down the Hermon.  The Hermon mountain is located at the very tip of the land of Israel, and the mountains of Zion refer to Jerusalem, at the country's center. God's blessing flows from the top of the land downward, as if through gravitational force, so intense and vibrant is God's blessing felt in the Holy Land. Israel's national blood bank, 'Heart to Heart', ensures the blessing of life giving blood to all those in need, everyday, in Israel.

How Billy Graham's Ministry Impacted Louis Zamperini's Life (Movie: UNBROKEN)

How Billy Graham's Ministry Impacted Louis Zamperini's Life

Billy Graham's ministry altered the life of former Olympian Louis Zamperini.
Billy Graham's ministry altered the life of former Olympian Louis Zamperini. (Billygraham.org)
Louis Zamperini, World War II prisoner of war survivor, Olympic distance runner and personal friend of Billy Graham, has died at age 97.
Zamperini's gripping story, including how he survived 47 days at sea on a raft after being shot down over the Pacific during Air Force duty, became well known in Laura Hillenbrand's 2010 New York Times best-seller, Unbroken.
The book also talks about the influence Billy Graham's ministry had on Zamperini's life. During the 1949 Los Angeles Crusade, Zamperini, who was struggling with alcoholism, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder and on the brink of divorce, gave his life to Christ at one of Mr. Graham's tent revival services at Washington Boulevard and Hill Street.
More than 60 years later, Mr. Graham was compelled to write Zamperini a letter after hearing a more detailed account of his 1949 life-changing conversion to follow Christ in Unbroken.
"Dear Louis," wrote Billy Graham, "My associate read me parts of the new book about you yesterday. What a life you have lived. What a description you have in the book of your conversion to Christ in 1949, and the great part that [your wife] Cynthia played in it, which I was aware of, but not in such detail. I had tears in my eyes and praise in my heart for what God has done through you."
Louis Zamperini speaks at the 1963 Billy Graham Crusade at the Los Angeles Coliseum.
Zamperini visited Mr. Graham in June of 2011 at his home in Montreat, North Carolina, and also visited the Billy Graham Library where he held a book signing at age 94. Zamperini was an inspirational speaker and teamed up with Mr. Graham at several of his Crusades, including San Francisco (1958) and Los Angeles (1963).
Before his conversion, Zamperini was a 5,000-meter runner for the U.S. Olympic Team in the 1936 Berlin Games. He enlisted in the Air Force in 1941, before getting shot down, along with 10 others, in April of 1943.
Eight other men did not survive that crash 850 miles west of Oahu and only Zamperini and one other lasted all 47 days adrift, using two albatrosses to catch fish, while fighting off shark attacks. They were caught by the Japanese Navy and spent over two years at various prisoner-of-war camps.

Cleaning Out Closets by Elaine Tavolacci

Cleaning Out Closets

by Elaine Tavolacci

Identity Network

Every season we have to clean out our closets to change the clothes from the previous season to the new season. We have to change our apparel according to the temperature of the season that we are in. The Holy Spirit is showing me that this is time for a change of garments as many of you are coming in to a new season spiritually. Some of you have outgrown your old wardrobe and you are being measured to be refitted with new apparel.

The Lord says, adjust your apparel according to the seasons that I bring you into. Make wise choices in all that you do. Make connections with people who are spiritually stronger than yourself, who could mentor you and advise you. Connect yourself with those who will compliment you and encourage you. Never allow those who are living in compromise to pull you down to their level. Many people don't understand the place that I am taking you to, neither could they relate to that spiritual level. Do not fear the unfamiliar garments of righteousness and holiness that I am clothing you in. Don't allow old mindsets to resurface, but allow Me to continue to renew your mind. Continue to clothe yourselves with tenderhearted mercy, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience.

New Freedom and New Joy

Then the Lord spoke to me about people having skeletons in their closets. Skeletons in your closet could refer to past memories that you prefer not to talk about with anyone, a secret sin, or something that you are hiding from others.

The Lord says; do not hide anything that will hold you back, but allow Me to release you from everything that is hindering you from advancing. Allow Me to enter into every area of your life to bring freedom and restoration. I will release you of those burdens that you have been carrying for years and bring wholeness to every area. Allow Me to bring order where there has been disorder. Allow Me to bring comfort where there has been discomfort. My love will fill those void places where there has been so much hurt and rejection. Allow Me to heal your heart that has been broken. I will abolish the fatigue and exhaustion that has been weighing you down and bring balance into every situation. Don't hoard hurtful memories of the past, but allow Me to deliver you from them.

I will restore the years that have been stolen in your life. Nothing from your past will disqualify you from My plans when you remove those obstacles from the closet. You will then forget the past with all its mistakes and I will bring you into a fresh start. Resist the temptations that will try to pull you back into your old lifestyle so that you will not become entrapped once again. I will give you beauty for ashes and the oil of joy for mourning as you release everything to Me. Trust Me to remove any obstacle that is holding you back from achieving all that you were called to do. As you allow Me to purge your closet of these garments that are weighing you down, you will experience a new freedom and joy in Me says the Lord.

Ephesians 4:20-24 But you have not so learned Christ, if indeed you have heard Him and have been taught by Him, as the truth is in Jesus: that you put off, concerning your former conduct, the old man which grows corrupt according to the deceitful lusts, and be renewed in the spirit of your mind, and that you put on the new man which was created according to God, in true righteousness and holiness.

Colossians 3:12 Clothe yourselves therefore, as God's own chosen ones (His own picked representatives), [who are] purified and holy and well-beloved [by God Himself, by putting on behavior marked by] tenderhearted pity and mercy, kind feeling, a lowly opinion of yourselves, gentle ways, [and] patience [which is tireless and long-suffering, and has the power to endure whatever comes, with good temper].

Hebrews 12:1 Therefore we also, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which so easily ensnares us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, 2 looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.

Iranian Militiaman-Turned-Christian Visits Israel

WATCH: Iranian Militiaman-Turned-Christian Visits Israel

Monday, December 15, 2014 |  Israel Today Staff
Afshin Javid was born into a pious Muslim family that heartily supported Iran’s “Islamic Revolution” and the rise to power of the ayatollahs. Today, he has embraced faith in Yeshua, and is looking to reconcile with former enemies, including Israel.
In an interview with Channel 2 News (see below) during a visit to Israel last month, Javid recalled that as a young man he enthusiastically joined what is known as the Basij militia in Iran.
The Basij Resistance Force is a volunteer paramilitary organization operating under the auspices of the Revolutionary Guard. It’s young members roam the streets of Iran brutally enforcing the dictates of their clerical overlords.
“We basically enforced Sharia on the streets,” Javid told his Israeli hosts. “If a girl talks to a boy, or a boy is talking to a girl, you grab them, you arrest them, you beat them. We were the ‘Children of Islam.’ That’s what Ayatollah Khomeini called us.”
He even personally took part in six executions, and recalled feeling nothing but callous hatred, despite not even knowing the alleged crimes of the condemned.
The Basij militia continue to be a driving force of anti-Israel sentiment in the Islamic Republic.
“I remember the days when I would walk the streets of Iran shouting ‘Death to Israel,’” said Javid with tears in his eyes. “I had never met a Jewish person, but I hated them.”
After coming to faith, Javid fled Iran, and now lives in Canada. He has hopes that a better future lies ahead for his native land, and can see the younger generations in Iran are ready for and in desperate need of change.
“The drug addiction in Iran is massive. [As are] the suicide rate, the divorce rate,” he explained. “[Everyone] is saying, ‘Look, we didn’t get any of the things that they [the ayatollahs] promised us.’”
But Javid doesn’t believe Western sanctions and diplomatic pressure are going to bring about the desired changes, and certainly not spark a new revolution.
“The only way to change the mindset of a nation is to show them in your friendship a better way to live,” he insisted, noting that Iranians “are stuck in their own school of thought.”
The narration in the following video is in Hebrew, but Javid speaks in English:
