Here's Where Betsy DeVos Can 'Start Fresh' With Higher Education - MARY CLARE REIM/HERITAGE FOUNDATION

Here's Where Betsy DeVos Can 'Start Fresh' With Higher Education

Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos stated during a speech in Salt Lake City on Tuesday that instead of reauthorizing the Higher Education Act, lawmakers should consider a "fresh start."
Yes, Congress should consider alternatives to the Higher Education Act, which authorizes all federal higher education spending such as student loans and grants.
Enacted in 1965 under President Lyndon Johnson, the Higher Education Act has undergone countless amendments that pass problems on to future generations. As the secretary said, "Why wouldn't we start afresh and talk about what we need in this century and beyond for educating and helping our young people learn?"
Indeed, higher education badly needs to be adapted to the changing requirements of the American workforce. Here are just a few ways that Congress can give the higher education sector the fresh start it so badly needs.
Decouple Federal Financing From Accreditation
The federal government's control over our accreditation system is not a particularly popular topic, but it has dramatic consequences on the ability of American universities to thrive and innovate.
The federal government currently has sole discretion in the recognition of accreditors, who then serve as gatekeepers of federal student aid and other institutional financing. This solidifies the federal government's ability to determine which education is worthy of accreditation and which is not. Unfortunately, this de facto federal system of accreditation has limited the ability of the higher education sector to grow and adapt to the changing needs of our workforce and the economy.
Sen. Mike Lee, R-Utah, and Rep. Ron DeSantis, R-Fla., have put forward the Higher Education Reform and Opportunity Act (HERO), which would allow states to opt out of the current federal accrediting structure.
States could recognize their own accreditors, including members of the business community. The legislation would also allow states to break apart the current binary accrediting model, and let the business community, trade groups, nonprofits, and other entities to put their stamp of approval on individually credentialed courses or curricula.
These reforms would give students a better idea of the market value of the education they are receiving, grant more flexibility with student loan dollars, and create a pipeline between the universities and the job market.
Consolidate Federal Lending
Under the Obama administration, the federal government dramatically increased its role in originating and servicing student loans. The near-monopoly that the federal government now has over the student loan market presents many problems, the most pressing of which is mounting evidence suggesting federal aid leads to increases in college tuition.
As my colleague Jamie Hall and I discuss in our recent report, the five current federal loan programs should be collapsed into a single loan option under the current terms of the Graduate Stafford Loan. Additionally, Congress should place an annual and lifetime cap on student lending, thereby restoring fiscal responsibility to the loan program. We anticipate such reforms would lead to savings of $33 billion over the next 10 years.
Remove Burdensome Regulations
Under the Obama administration, several burdensome regulations were placed on institutions of higher education, particularly those in the for-profit sector.
Regulations should at the very least be sector neutral in their application, but a better approach would be to remove these barriers to innovation altogether.
Borrower defense to repayment, for example, opens institutions up to being sued by students who feel they have been defrauded by their university (a potentially slippery slope in the future). While longstanding institutions with large endowments may be better insulated from this regulation, new actors who are trying to build their business will have trouble coming up with the line of credit required to protect against such suits.
This is just one example of the many ways that burdensome regulations drain resources from universities and distract from the business of educating students.
In considering the reauthorization of the Higher Education Act, policymakers should follow DeVos' advice and develop new policy proposals that will help improve the quality of higher education while putting downward pressure on prices. These reforms would be a significant step in achieving that goal.

Pastor Holds Weekly Bible Studies With Trump's ENTIRE Cabinet - Will Maule HELLO CHRISTIAN

Pastor Holds Weekly Bible Studies With Trump's ENTIRE Cabinet

Apr 21, 2017 by Will Maule  HELLO CHRISTIAN
It has been revealed that cabinet officials attend a weekly Bible study group led by pastor Ralph Drollinger, who has said that he is committed to "making disciples of Christ in the Capitol," according to Fusion.net. The meeting was discovered when Fusion obtained a copy of Energy Secretary Rick Perry's daily schedule. Drollinger has praised the new administration for its power to “change the course of America in ways that are biblical.”
Drollinger, of Capitol Ministries, has also praised now Attorney General Jeff Sessions, who he says “hungers and thirsts for the Scripture," and who defended himself honorably in the senate confirmation hearings. “I’ve had the distinct honor of teaching him on this subject, and many others,” Drollinger said. “There’s nothing more exciting, when you’re a Bible teacher, to see one of the guys you’re working with—to see him or her articulate something you’ve taught them when they’re under the gun.”
Vice President Mike Pence, HUD Secretary Ben Carson, Education Secretary Betsy DeVos, Energy Secretary Rick Perry, Attorney General Jeff Sessions, CIA Director Mike Pompeo, nominee for Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue, HHS Secretary Tom Price, and Scott Pruitt, head of the Environmental Protection Agency, have all sponsored the Cabinet Bible study.
When Trump announced the nomination of so many Capitol Ministries students to Cabinet positions, Drollinger was delighted. “It follows then that the sudden rise of Pence, Sessions, and Pompeo—all men who are disciples of Jesus Christ—serve to vividly illustrate the truth of 1 Timothy 2:1-4!” he said.
“Suddenly these men who have been discipled by the Church are in prominent positions of authority to change the course of America in ways that are biblical.”

VP Pence Breaks Tie, Confirming DeVos as Education Secretary - CBN News Heather Sells

BetsyDeVos
VP Pence Breaks Tie, Confirming DeVos as Education Secretary
CBN News 02-07-2017
A divided Senate voted to confirm Betsy DeVos as the nation’s new secretary of education, with Vice President Mike Pence breaking a 50-50 tie.
The news comes after senators in opposition to DeVos staged an all-night speaking marathon against her, hoping to draw out at least one more opposition vote after two Republican senators announced that they would oppose DeVos.
Critics have also risen up on social media, with #holdthefloor and #NoOnDeVos hashtags abounding.  A chief concern -- that DeVos, a billionaire philanthropist and product of private education, has no experience with or interest in supporting public education.  It's a charge her supporters fiercely deny.
In the midst of this political battle, many believers have noticed that DeVos is a committed Christian who prioritizes her faith.
Rev. Robert Sirico, the founder of the Grand Rapids-based Acton Institute and a long-time DeVos family friend, describes her as a "solid evangelical Christian" who is active in her church and "orthodox in her beliefs and personal commitment to Jesus Christ."
John Booy, another long-time friend, told CBN News that DeVos integrates her faith into all areas of her life and that it's led her to a "deep sensitivtiy to those who have not had the privilege she's grown up with."
DeVos and her husband Dick DeVos spoke at a 2001 Christian philanthropic gathering about their faith.  She described a desire to be active in education to influence the culture and help "advance God's kingdom."
Dick DeVos spoke about wanting to drive better performance across all education.  "Our Christian worldview, which for us comes from a Calvinist tradition, which is to be very much a part of the world and to provide for a greater opportunity, a more expanded opportunity someday for all parents to be able to educate their children in a school that reflects their worldview," he said.
Booy is principal at the Potter's House, a Christian K-12 school in Grand Rapids.  DeVos has actively supported the school for years and Booy says she became passionate about reforming education while meeting parents there.  The school opened in 1981 to provide a choice for families in the low-income neighborhood surrounding it.  At the time, their public school ranked third-lowest in the state.
"I think that until you actually meet people who will tear up and cry when they tell you how desperate they were for their child to go to a safe school where they would be loved and cared for and be nurtured and would be taught to their highest potential--when she began to ehar those kinds of stories from the mouths of mothers and grandmothers, that's pretty compelling," said Booy.

Nine Members of Trump’s Cabinet Identify As Devout Christians - HelloChristian

Donald Trump and Mike Pence

Nine Members of Trump’s Cabinet Identify As Devout Christians

HelloChristian  Dec. 16, 2016
President-elect Donald Trump has now appointed nine members to the White House, each of whom profess publicly to be Christians. Is this a huge answer to prayer?
“For many years, we have prayed that God would raise up men and women of God to positions of leadership and influence in our country. However, since the end of the George W. Bush administration, there have been previous few answers to that prayer," writes Author and Pastor David Murray. "Who would have thought that Donald Trump might be the answer to that prayer?”
At the heart of these appointments is Vice President Mike Pence who has previously said “My Christian faith is at the heart of who I am” and “I’m a Christian, a conservative and a Republican, in that order." Then there is Chief of Staff Reince Preibus, who has previously tweeted "Christ’s sacrificial work provides an example for us all, and we join with the Psalmist in saying ‘You make known to me the path of life.’"
Then we've got Attorney General Jeff Sessions (who is a Sunday school teacher at his family’s church), and Housing and Urban Development’s Dr. Ben Carson, who believes that God spoke clearly to him that Trump would be president.
Further to this, there is Education’s Betsy DeVos, a Christian committed to bringing God's 'Kingdom' through schooling. Then we have newly-announced Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, EPA’s Scott Pruitt, CIA’s Mike Pompeo (whose family attends Eastminster Presbyterian Church), and Ambassador to UN Nikki Haley. They are all Christians!

The number of believers in the upper echelons of the Trump administration is quite incredible. Share this to encourage others!
