Synagogue Shooting Suspect in Custody, Congregants Prevented Shooting ‘From Being a Much Worse Tragedy’ - CBN News Gary Lane

Synagogue Shooting Suspect in Custody, Congregants Prevented Shooting ‘From Being a Much Worse Tragedy’
04-27-2019
CBN News Gary Lane
A 19-year old man is in police custody following a shooting this morning at a synagogue in Poway, California just north of San Diego.
One person was killed and three others injured at the Congregation Chabad Synagogue in San Diego County.
San Diego police say the suspect called 911 and later surrendered to police. The unidentified man said he was responsible for the synagogue shooting.
Witnesses said they were attending services marking the end of Passover when a gunman shouting obscenities entered the synagogue and started shooting a semi-automatic weapon.
Poway Mayor Steve Vaus told CNN that the “shooter was engaged by people in the congregation and those brave people certainly prevented this from being a much worse tragedy."
Four shooting victims were taken to Palomar Medical Center Poway and one of them, an older woman reportedly died there. Hospital officials said three victims were in stable condition.
Rabbi Yisroel Goldstein was among the injured. Shot in the hand but undeterred, Goldstein proceeded to deliver his sermon, telling the Jewish Orthodox congregants to “remain strong. “
Mayor Vaus told CNN he considered the attack a hate crime "because of statements that were made when the shooter entered."
Police are examining a letter and the suspect’s social media posts to determine a motive for the attack.
President Trump expressed sympathy for the victims and tweeted,  “Thoughts and prayers to all of those affected by the shooting at the Synagogue in Poway, California. God bless you all. Suspect apprehended. Law enforcement did outstanding job. Thank you. “
Vice President Mike Pence also sent out his own tweet saying, “We condemn in the strongest terms the evil & cowardly shooting at Chabad of Poway today as Jewish families celebrated Passover. No one should be in fear in a house of worship. Antisemitism isn’t just wrong - it’s evil. “
It was the second mass shooting at a U.S. synagogue in the past six months. Eleven people were killed and seven injured October 27, 2018 at the Tree of Life synagogue in Pittsburgh. Robert Bowers was charged with using a firearm–an AR-15 to commit a hate crime. He received a total of 29 charges, including 11 counts of criminal homicide.

Why the Ideal That Swept Trump Into the White House Could Last Beyond November - GARY LANE/CBN NEWS

Why the Ideal That Swept Trump Into the White House Could Last Beyond November

Will the populist wave that swept Donald Trump into the White House continue beyond the upcoming midterm election, even though the president's name isn't on the ballot?
Steve Hilton, host of the Fox News show The Next Revolution and author of the book Positive Populism says the trend may likely move forward because it is really a movement advanced by people from both major political parties.
"Populism isn't just a phenomenon on the right. You see it also on the left with Bernie Sanders and support for him in the 2016 campaign. So, I think working Americans generally want really big change," Hilton explained.
Appearing on the CBN News program The Global Lane, Hilton said the elite still don't understand the pent-up frustration many Americans felt for years about a Washington policy agenda that advanced globalization, automation in the economy, centralization of government and uncontrolled immigration.

"All those things benefited the people at the top. They did really well out of it. So, their lives were great and that's why I think they missed it," said Hilton. "And they didn't understand just how angry people had gotten about the fact whether they voted Republican or Democrat nothing ever seemed to change. The rich got richer and their lives seemed to get worse."
Enter Donald Trump. He tapped into the discontent of the middle class during the 2016 presidential campaign—especially in America's Rust Belt where people were left without jobs and economic security.
But does Trump really believe in populism, or did he just use it to win the White House and obtain power? Some people say the president is an elitist because he's a billionaire. So, how is Donald Trump different from other wealthy, powerful people?
"There's a difference between the elite and elitism. Elitism in my view is an ideology of some of the policies I was explaining—the globalism and so-on. It's a policy agenda, elitism that benefits the elite. You can be in the elite a member of it and reject elitism," Hilton explained.

Anti-Christian Agenda: Canada Cuts Off Christian College and Bible Camp, but Boosts Muslims - CBN News Gary Lane

Anti-Christian Agenda: Canada Cuts Off Christian College and
Bible Camp, but Boosts Muslims
06-18-2018
CBN News Gary Lane

Two recent Canadian government decisions are raising concerns about anti-Semitic and anti-Christian
bias in Canada.

Christians say Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's insistence on a liberal "values test" has cut
government aid to churches but has provided financial help to Muslim groups opposed to the
United States and Israel.

Candice Bergen, a member of Parliament from the Conservative Party, challenged the Canadian PM
to explain why his government has denied aid to churches that are helping the homeless, but provides
because it refused to sign a required "values test" in support of abortion.

Now, Bergen says more than $20,000 in taxpayer funds were given to a Muslim group—the
Islamic Humanitarian Service group—in 2017, and additional funds from the Canadian Summer
jobs program were granted to the organization this year.

She said the group's leader recently spewed hate speech at an Al Quds Day rally in Toronto.
"The purpose of it was to incite hatred and it was an anti-Semitic rally against Jews," said MP Bergen.

Also receiving Canada Summer Jobs program funding this year is the Canada Arab Federation
and Anatolia Islamic Center, two organizations that were denied funding in the past and criticized
for harboring extremist views.

Watch MP Candice Bergen challenge Prime Minister Justin Trudeau about his support of an anti-Semitic Muslim group on the floor of the Canadian House of Commons
Meanwhile, in a 7-2 decision, the Supreme Court of Canada denied law school accreditation for a
Christian university.

The court said it is "proportionate and reasonable" to limit the religious rights of Trinity Western
University to ensure open access for LGBT students.

The court upheld the right of law societies to refuse accreditation because of the Christian
institution's mandatory community covenant requiring a strict code of conduct which includes
abstinence from sex outside of heterosexual marriage.

In the majority ruling, justices argued LGBT students would be deterred from attending the law
school if required to sign such a covenant. They also suggested those signing the covenant would be
Out of Work

TWU won appeals of lawsuits in British Colombia and Nova Scotia but lost an appeal in Ontario.

The university first presented its school of law proposal to the BC Minister of Advanced Education
in June 2012. Approval was granted in December 2013 and law societies from six Canadian provinces
gave their approval, but the Law Society of Upper Canada rejected accreditation.

The Law Society of BC later reversed its approval in June 2014 and in December 2014 the BC
Minister of Advanced Education revoked consent for the TWU law degree. That's when TWU
filed legal action.

TWU responded to the Canada Supreme Court ruling on the university's website stating: "Until
now, Canada has encouraged the rich mosaic created by the diversity of views, race, gender, and
belief systems. Sadly, the Supreme Court has decided that this does not extend to a law school at
Trinity Western University."

A new video about the university was uploaded to the university's website and YouTube entitled,
"A lost opportunity for Canadians who seek access to justice." The video describes Trinity Western
University as a university "dedicated to the development of leaders who live out their commitment
to justice, mercy, and hope."

Dean of Education, Allyson Jule explained, "A lot of our students do come here because of the
Christian ethos and one of the key principles of the Christian faith is serving others, loving others
as yourself."

The video also features a Muslim student named Haya who says, "We share the same values.
Living your life is not just about you. It's about helping everyone around you."

TWU explained that its goal for the law school was to educate law students about serving charities
and non-profits. The Christian university states on its website that the "practice of law is about
service to clients" and to focus on programs that "prepare people to help people who struggle to
pay for legal services."

Trinity Western planned to possibly open the law school in September 2019. Now, after the
Canadian Supreme Court ruling, it says the university will "keep finding opportunities to serve."

Bible Ban: God's Word Disappears from Online Stores in China - CBN News Talia Wise,Gary Lane

Bible Ban: God's Word Disappears from Online Stores in China
04-05-2018
CBN News Talia Wise,
Bibles are being pulled from online retailers in China as the government cracks down on how its citizens practice religion. Christians fear a new wave of widespread persecution may be underway.
The communist country has always controlled the sale of the Bible, but according to CNN, now online searches for the "Holy Bible" do not garner any results.

JD.com, Amazon.cn and Taobao, China's biggest online marketplaces, did not include the Bible. Some online searches did turn up "baby food bible" and the "autoimmune disease healing bible" and other related study guides and children's Bible stories.
Searches did, however, include results on the Koran.
Online merchants have said copies can be obtained through private message, but public listings for the Bible are now impossible on Taobao.
Sarah Cook, a senior research analyst for East Asia at Freedom House told CNN the ban "is an important example of how internet censorship intersects with restrictions on religious freedom."
"Sensitive religious topics and groups are among the most censored in China," she said. "In our research we found the Chinese authorities increasingly using more high-tech methods to control religion and punish believers - including surveillance and arrest of believers for sharing information online."
China recognizes Buddhism, Islam, Christianity, and Taoism.
The Bible crackdown comes less than three months after officials demolished Golden Lampstand Church in the city of Linfen, Shanxi province.
One month earlier, authorities destroyed a 20-year-old Catholic church in the same Chinese province.
Chinese Christians fear a new wave of persecution has now come against them.
They believe the central government directed the removal of more than 1,200 crosses from atop churches throughout Zhejiang province from 2013-2015.
And more recently, Chinese Christians questioned the sudden death of prominent Christian lawyer Li Baiguang.
Li had defended many Christians and unregistered churches targeted by the government for cross removal or demolition.
Ten Public Security Bureau (PSB) plainclothes police kidnapped Li in October 2017. He was beaten severely and left abandoned at the side of a road.
Last February, the 49-year-old human rights attorney died suddenly at a military hospital in Nanjing. The cause of death was listed as liver cancer, but China Aid President Bob Fu said Li had attended the National Prayer Breakfast in Washington, DC just days before his death.

Fu said, "He did not have liver related illness before and his death raises a lot of questions…"
Fordham University law professor Carl Minzner is an expert on Chinese law and governance.
He says China was a one-party state (Communist Party) in the 1980's and 1990's, where collective leadership was the norm.
But in February, the party did away with presidential term limits. That means like Chairman Mao Zedong, President Xi Jinping is now "leader for life."
"You're now seeing China begin to swing back to the more personalized authoritarian regime that in my view is a lot less stable," Minzner explained.

Trump on UN Jerusalem Vote: 'Let Them Vote Against Us. We'll Save a Lot' - CBN News Gary Lane

Trump on UN Jerusalem Vote: 'Let Them Vote Against Us. We'll Save a Lot'
12-21-2017
CBN News Gary Lane
The United Nations is expected to vote Thursday against a Trump administration decision that recognizes Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.
Like Ronald Reagan before him, President Trump is taking on the United Nations. At the final Cabinet meeting of the year, he delivered some words of warning to the General Assembly about the capital of Israel vote.
"They take hundreds of millions of dollars and even billions of dollars and then they vote against us. Well, we're watching those votes," the president said. "Let them vote against us. We'll save a lot. We don't care."
Earlier in the week, US Ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley put out this tweet, saying,
"At the UN we're always asked to do more and give more. So when we make a decision, at the will of the American people about where to locate our embassy, we don't expect those we've helped to target us. On Thursday, there'll be a vote criticizing our choice. The US will be taking names."
The United States sends the United Nations $8 billion a year. That's about 22 percent of the world body's annual budget, with $3 billion allocated for international peacekeeping efforts.
Like former President Ronald Reagan, Trump has complained that the money American sends is mismanaged by a bloated bureaucracy – a General Assembly that often votes against Israel and America's interests.
"The people who live here are great citizens that love this country," Trump said at the final cabinet meeting of 2017. "They're tired of this country being taken advantage of and we're not going to be taken advantage of any longer."
And before closing out the meeting, Health and Human Services Secretary Ben Carson offered up a prayer.
"In this time of discord, distrust and dishonesty, we ask that you would give us a spirit of compassion, gratitude and common sense and give us the wisdom to be able to guide this great nation in the future. We ask in the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit, amen."

Christmas on Campus? More Universities Say 'Bah Humbug' - CBN News Gary Lane

Christmas on Campus? More Universities Say 'Bah Humbug' - CBN News Gary Lane  Dec. 13, 2017
'Tis the season to be jolly, for peace on earth and goodwill toward men, but not at Loyola University- Chicago.
Some students at the Catholic school are complaining that Christmas is receiving too much emphasis. They want other religious holidays like the Muslim holiday of Eid al-Fitr to receive the same amount of attention.
And the holiday inclusion movement has spread to other college campuses this Christmas season.
The University of Tennessee has warned students to ensure that their holiday parties aren't really Christmas parties in disguise.

And some other universities have even banned nativity scenes and images of the crucifixion.
Hannah Scherlacher, Campus Reform Program Manager says it's all happening in the name of tolerance and inclusivity.
"But in reality it's just another attempt to  marginalize Christian students."
Also on campus this Christmas season?
Care Bears are now being provided by one university to sooth stressed-out students, while Make America Great Again hats are taboo at another university.
Find out more by watching Ms. Scherlacher's Set it Straight interview with Gary Lane.

Hurricane Irma Storms Toward U.S., Jonathan Falwell and Wife Survive Devastation on St. Martin - CBN News Gary Lane

Hurricane Irma Storms Toward U.S., Jonathan Falwell and Wife Survive Devastation on St. Martin
09-07-2017 CBN News Gary Lane
Hurricane Irma barreled through the Caribbean on its way toward the U.S., packing 175 mile-per-hour sustained winds, bringing death and destruction to islands like Puerto Rico, Barbuda, and St. Martin.

Irma has left at least 10 dead and thousands homeless.

Nearly 700,000 people living in parts of Miami, Homestead, the Keys and other communities are under evacuation order.
Florida Governor Rick Scott had harsh words for people refusing to obey the mandatory evacuations: "If you live in any evacuation zones and you're still at home, LEAVE!"
With the storm's track appearing to target Florida, Scott said it's not time to take chances.
"Do not try to ride out this storm. The time to leave is now...we can't save you once the storm hits."
Thursday, Georgia's governor ordered a mandatory evacuation starting Saturday from the state's Atlantic coast ahead of Hurricane Irma. And the National Hurricane Center issued a hurricane watch for the Florida Keys and parts of South Florida.
In the U.S. Virgin Islands, Gov. Kenneth Mapp says they're already getting badly needed federal help, like emergency food, water, and tarps, after Irma significantly damaged St. Thomas and St. John with top winds of 150 mph for more than four hours. Fire and police stations collapsed and the main hospital in St. Thomas sustained heavy damage.
Thomas Road Baptist Church Pastor Jonathan Falwell had surprised his wife with a wedding anniversary trip to St. Martin. They were trapped on the island when the hurricane hit.
He posted photos of the destruction on social media and tweeted, "We are safe. No power, everything destroyed. Buildings gone. Please pray as this island is decimated."
Heavy rain hammered Puerto Rico and caused power outages affecting more than one million people - nearly 70 percent of customers of Puerto Rico's Electric Power Authority. More than a thousand sought safety in shelters there. Parts of the island could be without power for four to six months.

In the Florida Keys, 25,000 people have already been evacuated. Mandatory evacuations took place in some Miami neighborhoods and traffic jams on some evacuation routes were commonplace.
RESOURCE: The Essential Guide to Hurricane Preparedness

Florida Keys resident Elizabeth Prieto was among those leaving. "I've been through George, I've been through Andrew, I've been through Wilma but I'm not staying for Irma," she insisted.

Evacuees from the Florida and Georgia coasts are seeking refuge in hotel rooms in central Georgia. Most are sold out.

Florida Governor Rick Scott warned people to find a safe place. "Every Floridian should take this seriously and be aggressive to protect their family. Possessions can be replaced, your family cannot," he warned.

Floridians emptied store shelves of water, milk and bread and waited in long gas lines to fill up their fuel tanks. Evacuee Ian Craig waited in line only to discover there was nothing to buy.
"Gas is running out everywhere right now so I'm just a little too late trying to get it I guess," he said.

The latest storm track shows Irma downgrading a bit, but still a powerful Category 5 storm, possibly making landfall or skirting by Florida's east coast and then moving up to the Georgia coast and South Carolina.

Irma could cause a great deal of damage, just as Hurricane Harvey did when it flooded parts of Texas.
That would mean more disaster relief spending from Washington where President Trump struck a deal with Democrats Wednesday to raise the government's debt ceiling - a deal that included relief funding to help after Harvey.
CBN's Operation Blessing is working in Texas to help people recover from Harvey.
And as it did before Harvey, O.B. is busy preparing for potential disaster in Florida.

Truckloads of water and food supplies are now being staged at its Ocala, Florida warehouse.
That means Operation Blessing volunteers will be ready to move into action whenever and wherever Hurricane Irma makes landfall in the U.S.
