Don't Run if God Has Called You to Speak - J. LEE GRADY CHARISMA NEWS

If God has called you, don't run away. (Getty Images)
This past Sunday I stood in a pulpit, looked out over a congregation of mostly strangers, cleared the lump in my throat and preached a message that the Lord had laid on my heart from the Bible.
Thousands of men and women speak publicly like this every week. It's what preachers do. No big deal. But even though I speak often, I've found that preaching the gospel is one of the most frightening assignments anyone could attempt. I feel as if I die a thousand deaths right before I do it, and I die several more times after I go home and evaluate what happened.
After one discouraging experience in which an audience stared coldly at me with their arms folded, I determined that preaching surely must not be my calling. I shared my struggle with an older pastor.
"Sometimes I feel discouraged after I speak," I said. "Does that ever happen to you?" I was sure he would counsel me to stop preaching.
His answer shocked me. "Son, I feel that way every Monday morning," he said.
When I tell friends that I stubbornly resisted the call of God to preach because of my lack of confidence, they act surprised. They don't know how much anguish I went through. They think most people who stand in pulpits want to be there. They can't believe that I wrestled with God for months when I felt He was calling me to speak.
We assume God chooses certain people to preach because of their oratory skills. But true preaching is not a natural exercise—it is one of the most supernatural tasks anyone can ever be called to do. It requires an imperfect human vessel to yield himself or herself to speak the very words of God.
If we do this in the flesh, the results are miserable; if we wholly trust the power of the Holy Spirit, prophetic preaching unleashes supernatural anointing.
Most preachers in the Bible were reluctant. Moses made excuses about his stuttering, Gideon tried to disqualify himself because of his family background, and Jeremiah complained about the responsibility of carrying a prophetic burden. Jonah bought a one-way ticket to the other side of the Mediterranean Sea so he wouldn't have to give his unpopular sermon!
And the apostle Paul, who was a silver-tongued Pharisee before he met Christ, was stripped of his eloquence before he preached throughout the Roman Empire. He told the Corinthians: "I was with you in weakness and in fear and in much trembling. My speech and my preaching was not with enticing words of man's wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power, so that your faith should not stand in the wisdom of men, but in the power of God" (1 Cor. 2:3-5).
If Paul trembled when he spoke, I have no right to complain when I feel butterflies in my stomach for the thousandth time.
Charismatic revivalist Arthur Katz wrote about the power of true preaching in his 1999 book Apostolic Foundations: "The only one qualified to preach ... is the one who wants to run the other way, like Jonah. ... The man who sighs and groans when called upon to speak, who does not want to be there, who feels terribly uncomfortable ... is the man out of whose mouth the word of true preaching is most likely to come."
That is certainly not the way most of us view pulpit ministry in contemporary America. We celebrate the smooth and the polished. We measure the impact of a sermon not by whether hearts are slain by conviction but by how high the people jump when the preacher tells them what they want to hear.
That kind of carnal preaching may win the accolades of men, boost TV ratings, get lots of hits on social media and even build megachurches. But the kingdom is not built on hipster style or smug self-confidence. We need God's honest words, sent straight from the authentic heart of a broken vessel. The church will live in spiritual famine until reluctant, weak and trembling preachers allow His holy fire to come out of their mouths.
If you have a message from God, stop running. If you are wrestling with God like Jacob did, quit resisting, and let your Maker break your pride; He wants you to walk with a limp the rest of your life so you can lean on Him rather than on your own ability. Die to your fears, doubts and excuses, and drink the cup of suffering that accompanies the genuine call of God.

Hundreds Gather to Hear the Gospel in Second 'Jerusalem Encounter - CBN NEWS

Evangelist Todd White (center) (YouTube)

Standing With Israel
More than a thousand people from six continents are taking part this week in the second annual Jerusalem Encounter conference sponsored by FIRM—the Fellowship of Israel-Related Ministries. It isn't a conventional gathering because many of the participants have traveled throughout Israel, seeing and experiencing the places where the events described in the Bible took place.
Wayne Hilsden, the founder and president of FIRM, welcomed the crowd in Tuesday's opening session. "This Jerusalem encounter and the week-long journey many of you have been on across this land, is designed to pave the way for you to encounter the Lord, as well as encounter the land and encounter the people in this land," Hilsden said.
Daniel Kolenda, president of Christ for All Nations and one of the featured speakers, led a group of 500 people from many nations, including the U.S., China and Brazil. He was surprised to find that on a tour aimed at believing Christians, some of those who came responded to a salvation call. Kolenda described a moment on the Sea of Galilee with evangelist Todd White, who was one of the speakers.
"We had five boats tied together, and Todd White was there with us," Kolenda recalled. "So he gave an altar call, and you would think that on a tour, there wouldn't be people who needed to be born again. And yet people were climbing over the sides of the boats to come to the middle to get saved. We've seen people getting healed and getting saved, so it's more than just a place where we're having some sort of educational, academic visit of the land of Israel. It's really been for many people, a life-changing experience with the power of God," Kolenda said.
The visitors to Jerusalem also witnessed opposition to the conference Tuesday from ultra-Orthodox Jewish protestors who tried to disrupt the gathering in the heart of the city.
Chad Holland, senior pastor with the King of Kings Community, the host congregation, told participants it was not an unusual occurrence. He described it as "the kingdom of God really hitting people and making them upset." Holland prayed for the protesters that, "in the name of Yeshua [Jesus], the Lord would "invade their sleep, invade their dreams and visions" and that "all the Scriptures they have read in the past will now come to pass."
Those attending will hear from a number of Messianic ministry leaders living in Israel, as well as some featured speakers from the U.S., including Kolenda and author and radio host Dr. Michael Brown. The Jerusalem Encounter conference ends Thursday night.
FIRM is livestreaming portions of the conference on its website

The Snake That Bites – Part 2 Healing the Hurt - Now Think On This by Steve Martin

The Snake That Bites – Part 2
Healing the Hurt

Now Think On This
Steve Martin

“They called him every name in the book and he said nothing back. He suffered in silence, content to let God set things right. He used his servant body to carry our sins to the Cross so we could be rid of sin, free to live the right way. His wounds became your healing. You were lost sheep with no idea who you were or where you were going. Now you're named and kept for good by the Shepherd of your souls.” (1 Peter 2:23-25, THE MESSAGE)

While growing up in the Midwest, Cedar Falls, Iowa to be exact, one of my heart’s desire, even at an early age, was to be a missionary priest/doctor to Africa. Now I realized that being a “missionary”, and a “priest”, and a “doctor”, and then going to the faraway, dark continent of “Africa” wasn’t the most probable, nor desirable, career path for most 8th graders in the late 60’s. Even my grade school Roman Catholic priest, Father Purcell, who taught the eleven of us in our religion class, said I should give up that prayer and be content at becoming a diocesan priest. You know, stay here in the comforts of America.

So what does that have to do with my first Now Think On This message on The Snake That Bites? Well, let me tell you.

The Lord Jesus puts it in the heart of His people to carry His love to the nations.  It used to be that the only way you could actually fulfill that command was to go. Literally become a missionary, leave all behind, and go to a foreign land having absolutely nothing in common with the civilization you grew up in your first 18 years of life. Some still do that. I bless them in Jesus’ Name for their courage and longing to fulfill His commandment to take His Gospel, Good News, to the nations.

Taking His healing word to the nations.
The globe serves as a reminder in our home.

But now, through the great advancements that God Himself has given to men and women, with ever increasing revealed knowledge to excel in all kinds of new discoveries, we can take His Words to the nations through social media. Just as He had the Romans build the extensive road system, extending their kingdom throughout the known land in their time, they unknowingly made the way to enable the apostles and other believers to travel easily.

Today He has also given inventions, technical savvy, and vast understanding to mankind, to “build the roads” in our time – such as primarily the Internet, to get His Gospel out. (Sorry Al Gore. Not you.)

Thus, finally, I am getting to the point I want to make. The Lord has made a great way to get His word out, to bring His healing to the people of the world. Going as a missionary has now become possible for each of us who call on the Name of the Lord Yeshua (Jesus). Through social media.

Bringing you His healing word has been His desire from the start. He wants people freed from the snake bite where it all began in the Garden of Eden. His plan of redemption and salvation has been eternal, and now you and I can experience this, wherever you are at this moment in time and space.

Much of the mental and body sickness we experience is the result of the spiritual diseases we carry. Proven medical facts.

There is healing from the snake bites you have received over the years. There is a way to be free from the resulting bitterness, resentment, and even hatred that first brought infection into your spirit, which moved down into your soul (mind, will and emotions), and then eventually manifested itself in your body. Yes, spiritual sickness shows itself in soulish and physical outlays. Many mental and body sickness is the result of the spiritual diseases we carry.

Needing forgiveness, receiving it first from the One who alone can begin the process, and then acting on His work yourself, will bring the healing that the snake venom poisoned you with after each bite.

“For you have been called for this purpose, since Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example for you to follow in His steps, WHO COMMITTED NO SIN, NOR WAS ANY DECEIT FOUND IN HIS MOUTH; and while being reviled, He did not revile in return; while suffering, He uttered no threats, but kept entrusting Himself to Him who judges righteously; and He Himself bore our sins in His body on the cross, so that we might die to sin and live to righteousness; for by His wounds you were healed. For you were continually straying like sheep, but now you have returned to the Shepherd and Guardian of your souls.” (1 Peter 2:21-25, NASU)

Jesus’ death on the brutal Roman cross was the plan from the beginning with His Father. He knew ahead of time, before He came as the sinless Lamb, that He was going to suffer, receive 39 gouging whip lasses from the laughing soldiers, and hang on the mocking, cursed tree, in order to complete the required payment for mankind’s sin – the shedding of Innocent Blood for the forgiveness of our sins. Then and only then could the healing process begin, to free us from the sickness and death caused by our sin, including unforgiveness which we carry far too long in our daily life.

“For it was the Father's good pleasure for all the fullness to dwell in Him, and through Him to reconcile all things to Himself, having made peace through the blood of His cross; through Him, I say, whether things on earth or things in heaven.

And although you were formerly alienated and hostile in mind, engaged in evil deeds, yet He has now reconciled you in His fleshly body through death, in order to present you before Him holy and blameless and beyond reproach —  if indeed you continue in the faith firmly established and steadfast, and not moved away from the hope of the gospel that you have heard, which was proclaimed in all creation under heaven, and of which I, Paul, was made a minister.”
(Col 1:19-23, NASU)

And being there are always two sides to the coin…who have you hurt with your biting words, quick temper, or rude remarks? Repentance is both for you, me and the others. It goes both ways. Consider asking forgiveness from those whom you have bitten with your own venom.

Are you willing to be forgiven for your sins? You can ask Jesus Christ, Yeshua HaMashiach, for the first time in your life, or for the ongoing confession of sin, to be free from the lasting effects of the venom we carry. Crying out to the Lord and Savior is simple. You just have to do it.

Do you hold unforgiveness towards your Mom, Dad, sister, brother, boss, close friend? How about your pastor (or your church member - yes I know!) or your co-worker. The list can be inexhaustible. Anyone who has said, did or acted against you, and that one you so want to get back at for hurting you? If so, you need to accept the forgiveness you have already first received, as a sinner, acknowledge the wrong was wrong, but now know that it is time to let it go, to let the Blood of Jesus wash over you, and bring healing to your spirit, soul and body.

Repentance and forgiveness. Again, it is simple.

You don’t have to work yourself up in an emotional frenzy, or bring up every occasion when you received the stinging wound.

Just quietly and with resolve say, “Jesus, I forgive them, as you have first forgiven me.” Say each name or memory that the Holy Spirit brings to mind right now, forgive them, and receive the healing touch from your loving Father and His Only Son Jesus, the Savior of the world.

Let the Father forgive your sins. You then in turn forgive those who sinned against you. That also is in the Lord’s prayer you learned as a child (I hope.)

As I said, I didn’t make it as the missionary priest doctor that I wanted to be, but now the Lord has allowed me to bring His truth and healing word to you, in your very nation. It is just in a much wider realm.

Be free again to enjoy life. Rejoice in Jesus and give thanks!

COMMENTARY: A Parable About Two Trains - Brian Hennessy ISRAEL TODAY

COMMENTARY: A Parable About Two Trains

Sunday, May 07, 2017 |  Brian Hennessy  ISRAEL TODAY
I would like to tell you a parable of two trains that have traveled across the pages of history for nearly two millennium.
Back in the First Century, both trains were parked across the station from each other in Jerusalem. One was an express that I will call the Jewish Train. The other train, which had just pulled into the station, was a local and had many more cars. I’ll call it the Gospel Train.
Now the Jewish Train had already traveled some 2000 dusty years and was just waiting to pick up one more passenger, known only as the Messiah, before continuing on. What the conductors didn’t realize, however, was that the Messiah had already come on board but was not recognized. When Yeshua finally identified himself as the one they were waiting for, neither the people nor the conductors believed him, and threw him off .
Broken-hearted over their rejection, Messiah shook the dust from his sandals and said to the Jewish train, “From now on you will not see me until you say, ‘Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord” (Matt. 24:39). He then turned and boarded the local Gospel Train followed by a goodly number of Jews who had believed in him.
Then both trains pulled out of the station.
For the next two thousand years the trains hurtled through history on completely different tracks, experiencing totally different realities. The Jewish Train, once so filled with hope and promise, entered a long dark tunnel that was often terrifying. And the people cried out, when will it end?
The Gospel Train with the Messiah on board, although under constant trial and tribulation, was full of light and joy and promise. This train made thousands of local stops around the world, picking up more and more passengers.
Then, after twenty centuries, the Jewish Train suddenly found itself back in the Jerusalem station again.  A new hope and excitement filled the hearts of the passengers as they sensed their long nightmare ride was over.
Soon after, the Gospel Train, now called the Christian Train, also pulled into the Jerusalem station. And Messiah made a startling announcement. He told all aboard he was getting off here and advised all who loved him to do likewise. He’d brought home the “fullness of the Gentiles” (Rom. 11:25). It was now time to favor Zion.  If we didn’t get off the train with him we would find ourselves plunged into the “outer darkness.”
And that’s where I believe we are today, folks.
Those who have ears to hear have already begun to pile out of the Christian train onto the Jerusalem station, realizing God’s ultimate intention was not to bring about a “Christianized world” – but a restored Israel. And that the Jews on the other train, who we could not relate to for so long, were actually our long-lost brethren.
Finally, we are starting to see this whole 2000-year church age was God’s way of rounding up all His chosen ones scattered around the world to fulfill the promises to Abraham. Did not Abraham hope against hope “that he might become the father of many nations [Gentiles]?” (Rom. 4:18)
Of those saved, some would be those circumcised in the flesh. But others would not be. That’s why our inclusion had to be by faith, “in order that it may be in accordance with grace, so that the promise will be guaranteed to ALL the descendants, not only to those who are of the Law, but also to those who are of the faith of Abraham, who is the father of us all” (Rom. 4:16)
In the days ahead, I believe an amazing miracle will take place the likes of which the world has never seen. A huge remnant of believers from among the nations (and perhaps many Jews still in the Diaspora) will arrive in Israel in a supernatural way that will exceed even the exodus from Egypt (see Jer. 23:5-8, Isa. 11:11-16).
That’s when, I believe, those on the Jewish train will suddenly be given eyes to see. And they will say to us, “Blessed are you who come in the name of the Lord.” Indeed, many have already started to do so. And just as Yeshua prophesied so long ago, they will see him again.
Equally as exciting, they will begin to recognize who we “Christians” truly are and they will hear themselves fulfilling the words of Isaiah: “You will say in your heart, who has begotten these for me, since I have been bereaved of my children and am barren, an exile and a wanderer? Who has reared these? Behold, I was left alone. From where did these come?” (Isa 49:21). What a day that shall be!
This whole end-time event, I believe, has long been prophesied in the story of Joseph. Unrecognizable beneath his Gentile garb, Joseph (a picture of Messiah in his body) finally revealed himself in tears to his brothers in one of the most poignant moments recorded in the Bible. But unlike Messiah’s weeping over Jerusalem, Joseph’s tears were tears of joy.
And what did Joseph then tell his brothers? “Do not grieve (that you rejected me so long ago) or be angry with yourselves…for God has sent me before you to preserve a remnant in the earth, and to keep you alive for a great deliverance” (Gen. 45:5,7). Without Messiah, Israel cannot survive the coming Tribulation. And without Israel, neither can we.  It’s a marriage made in Heaven.
Clearly, many tumultuous end-time events still lie ahead. But first things first. And the first thing, I believe, is for the true followers of Messiah to start disembarking from the Christian train. It’s headed for the scrap yard.
It’s time to get ready for a great reunion in the Kingdom of God.

Gang Leader Trades Guns for Gospel - THE CHRISTIAN INSTITUTE

David Washington pastors Kingdom Covenant Church in Chicago, Illinois. (YouTube)

Gang Leader Trades Guns for Gospel

Join us on our podcast each weekday for an interesting story, well told, from Charisma News. Listen at charismapodcastnetwork.com.

A former gang leader whose life was completely turned around after becoming a Christian has opened up about his faith in an article for The Gospel Coalition.
David Washington is now the pastor of Kingdom Covenant Church in Chicago.
He spoke out about his violent past and says it was his coming to Christ that "saved his life."
Realization
Washington joined the "Gangster Disciples" around the age of 12. He became a drug dealer in his teens and went on to become gang leader.
It was not long before he was arrested and facing a possible 15-year prison sentence for armed robbery and unlawful use of a weapon.
His gang threw him a going-away party the day before he was due to plead guilty in court. It was here that he was struck by the realization of what he had done.
"I had this experience of looking at myself in the mirror and saying, 'You threw your whole life away for nothing,'" Washington said.
Convinced and Converted
Washington says that although he was an agnostic at the time, he decided to ask God for help. The next day, the judge dropped one of the charges and sentenced Washington to one year of house arrest.
"I was convinced God was real after that", he said. "And once convinced, there was no turning back. I gave God everything I had."
He says he "never went back to doing drugs" after this and began sharing the gospel with members of his former gang.
"I began to go to the same people I used to lead and tell them, 'I gave my life to Christ. This is real. I'm pleading with you to come out of this.'"
'Love of Jesus'
Washington became involved in youth ministry and prison ministry at Salem Baptist Church. He also studied at a local Bible college before getting a master of divinity in theology.
He has now started a church on the south side of Chicago that works alongside members of the community who are in prison.
Pastor Harvey Carey said Washington started his church on the streets "because that's where he was won".
"He's saying, 'I know what it's like, but let me show you the love of Jesus.'"
