7 Thoughts About Christmas From a Messianic Jew - RON CANTOR CHARISMA NEWS

Here is a different view of Christmas--from a Messianic Jew.

Here is a different view of Christmas--from a Messianic Jew. (Ron Cantor )

7 Thoughts About Christmas From a Messianic Jew

Standing With Israel
Over the years, I have run into many hurting Christians who tell me of loved-ones suddenly having an epiphany and declaring they can never celebrate Christmas again!
These well-meaning, but a bit overzealous believers often connect it with Messianic Judaism. The end result is that folks believe Messianic Jews are on a Crusade (pun intended) to end Christmas. Whether Christmas is pagan in origins or not, one is not going to win over their loved-ones by preaching to them that they are now pagans or celebrating a pagan holiday.
If one has a longstanding tradition of celebrating Christmas with their extended family, I see no reason not to continue even if he or she has come to different conclusions about celebrating it. Family is too important. Just recently I was in a Jewish synagogue singing songs about the Creator with 40 Jews who don't share my belief in Yeshua. It was not a time to preach, but to be a light. I was there to honor my nephew who was married last week. Though we have strong disagreements regarding the Messiah, I want to win my in-laws, not drive them away. With that in mind, I wrote a series of blogs on Christmas.
Back in 1999 we lived in Ukraine. We were working with the Messianic Jewish Bible Institute, training leaders for Jewish ministry. When Christmas came, we were invited to a party with about 30 other expats working in Ukraine. They decided to go around the room, asking each other what their favorite Christmas memory was. There was a gasp when I shared that I didn't have one—"I've never celebrated Christmas." Mental hard drives began to crash.
It is simple. I am Jewish. I didn't grow up with Christmas. There is no spiritual or cultural connection. However, I do have a few things I would like to share with both Jew and Gentile alike about Christmas. I am not here as a Christmas Basher. I think (hope!) you'll find my view balanced and affirming and hopefully enlightening as well. But we need to go through it point by point.
1. Christmas is not in the Bible and neither is the timing of Yeshua's Birth. And neither is Hanukkah, for that matter, and I love to celebrate it. We are never commanded to celebrate the birth of the Messiah. That doesn't mean we shouldn't. I have many God-honoring traditions in my life that are not commanded in the Bible. John 10:22 tells us that Yeshua celebrated the aforementioned extra-biblical holiday of Hanukkah. But regarding Christmas, it should be stated that for centuries it never occurred to the first believers that they should celebrate His birth, nor did they know when he was born.
"With no Biblical directive to do so and no mention in the Gospels of the correct date, it wasn't until the fourth century that church leaders in Rome embraced the holiday." (click for source)
If I had to guess—and I'm no expert in this—Yeshua was born just before Passover. Here's why in a nutshell.
Zechariah, the father of John the Baptist, was a priest and according to the Luke passage there are only five possible times that someone in the Abijah grouping, as was Zechariah, could have been serving. It was either during one of the three feasts or the tenth week after the beginning of the year or nine weeks after Rosh Hashanah.
For sure, one of these dates (the Feast of Tabernacles), assuming that Elizabeth conceived within a short period of time after Zechariah came home from the Temple, could lead to a winter birth. We know that Yeshua was born 15 months after Elizabeth conceived as Miriam conceives in Elizabeth's sixth month.
However, it would be highly unlikely for shepherds to be outside on a cold and possibly wet winter night. It would make more since that they were with their lambs in the warmer spring in preparation for the Passover, when Lambs would be needed all over Jerusalem. According to Dr. Ziony Zevit, lambing season—when lambs were born—was at this time.
It is unlikely that Caesar Augustus would call for a census in the middle of the winter, when the rains could make for a cold, muddy trip. Although it could rain in the spring, it is less likely at the end of March/April and a lot warmer.
It would make sense that Yeshua not only died as the lamb of God on Passover, but was born at the time that the Passover Lamb would have been.
Of course, this is just a hypothesis—but a cool one.
2. Is Christmas Pagan? First a story. I was getting ready to preach one morning and the fellow giving the announcements said: "Everybody's talking about the pagan roots of Christmas. Next thing we'll know, they are going to start telling us that Halloween is pagan too!" He was being funny of course. But we must deal with the pagan roots of Christmas or at least the accusations.
One theory is that Christmas was connected to the heresy, Docetism, spreading in the fourth century which stated that Jesus had never been physically born, but was merely some sort of spiritual entity. The Council of Nicea dealt a blow to this heresy affirming both the divinity and humanity of the Messiah. It is believed that church leaders felt that if they gave Him a birthday, it would crush the heresy.
The winter pagan celebrations were already widely observed, so they chose December. It is believed that they did this to win pagans to Christianity.
"More than likely, this date was picked to line up with the Roman holiday of Saturnalia, which was celebrated with a pagan sacrifice to Saturn and a public banquet, followed by gift-giving and a carnival-like atmosphere." (click for source)
However, Saturnalia ends on December 23, not the 25th. There is a strong case made that Christians were celebrating Christmas before the fourth century. To be honest with you, there is much that is written on the pagan roots of Christmas and just as much written to refute it. Many of these folks have outstanding credentials and they all make strong cases. But as we will see in point three, it doesn't really matter.
3. Just because the pagans use a symbol doesn't make it pagan. For instance, the LBGT community uses the rainbow. But when I see a rainbow I think of God's covenant with Noah. A symbol only has meaning to the extent that you give it meaning. That is why Paul said that for someone who realizes there is no power in idols, he can eat meat sacrificed to idols. But for someone who grew up as a pagan, he still might think there is some spiritual power in this practice, so as a believer, he abstains.
My point is that if someone brings a Christmas tree into their house, it doesn't mean that are embracing pagan practices. Yes, it is true that pagans were fond of bringing greenery into their homes in the winter and many Romans decorated the tree to honor Bachuss, the fertility God. But that doesn't make trees evil.
Jeremiah (10:2-4) does condemn pagan practices, but again, he is condemning mimicking the pagans who sought spiritual reward or favor through such things. So to be clear, if you think that your Christmas tree has spiritual power, then Jeremiah has a problem with you. But if it is merely a family tradition that reminds you of Yeshua's birth, what is to condemn?
Stay tuned Tuesday for parts two and Wednesday for three of this series.{eoa}

Carolyn Hyde - The back routes - Heart of G-d Ministries

Carolyn Hyde
The back routes
Heart of G-d Ministries
Nov. 13, 2015

As I was driving along the bridge road in Louisiana, the L-rd put it on my heart to prophesy over the waters, that a great Exodus will come through this region, an exodus of Jews and Christians will help them to get to the ocean to take ships to go home to Israel. There will be canoes, lifeboats, rafts, speedboats, and all kinds of small crafts that will carry the people down the rivers, the tributaries, the bayous.

"But how will people know the way to take?" I asked.

"They will need native born people from Louisiana to show them the back routes."

And then it hit me what happened earlier today! I was doing Aliyah counseling with a dear friend and I didn't notice my gas gauge so I ended up running out of gas along the highway in Louisiana. I was pretty much out in the middle of nowhere! There were three or four trailers off the side of the road but there was a tall fence with a bayou separating me from them.

But suddenly a man walked out of his house to pick up his mail and he saw me as I was waving to him. So when he walked over to the fence and heard how I had run out of gas, he offered to bring his truck around and help me. Bless his heart! His name was Michael and he is a native born person from Louisiana.   After we got the gas in the portable tank, Michael said to me, "I'm going to take the back route to get you back on the highway."

The back route! That's what the L-rd is speaking to me about! And He will make a way!

Traffic jam in Baton Rouge! So I started complaining a little and I heard the L-rd say, "you have it so easy, girl". And I repented and realized that when the great Exodus begins from America, it's going to be nothing like the situation I'm in now. I'm a little stuck in traffic, and I'm a little tired because I only got five hours of sleep last night, but I have nuts and berries and water and I'm driving an air-conditioned car.

I have Internet and GPS and all that I need to get to where I'm going. When the great Exodus begins the Jewish people and the Christians who will be helping them will have very few of these things. So yes, L-rd, you're right! I have it easy. Please forgive me for just trying to be comfortable and get to where I'm going so that I can rest and have a nice meal and shower.

More about the back routes - David took the back route when Saul was looking to kill him and he escaped with his life. After Ehud drove a knife in the evil king's belly, he was able to escape out the back door.

Moshe escaped death by the back route in a basket on the Nile and later he escaped to Midian. Stories abound of back routes in the Bible, featuring the Exodus as a whole book!

There was always some kind of preparation for back routes - making the cradle from tar so Moshe wouldn't sink, gathering dough in baskets, plundering the Egyptians, etc.

I walked in the mall and who's the first person I talk with? An Israeli named Dolev! Oy! Dolev put cream on one of my eyes and told me to come back and he would do the other eye.

Then I ran to the Apple store and they told me it would be at least an hour but maybe even not because I didn't have an appointment. But a young man named PJ helped me. He took the time and did all the necessary paperwork and even gave me a new iPhone! He's a Christian and he's getting married next year so I told him to come to Israel and that's exactly what he's been wanting to do but he needed some advice. I love how the L-rd works! So I made a new friend.

While in the store I got a letter from my prophetic friend Rhonda who is from Louisiana, telling me that she can join us on Thursday at an Aliyah meeting...

On the way out of the mall, I realized I passed by Dolev's place so I went back to talk with him to tell him that I really don't have time for a treatment. Standing with him was another Israeli name Moshe. We had a nice talk and they told me that there's a new Chabad house in the mall. I said I don't think they would like me very much because I'm a messianic Jew. So they asked me how did that happen and I was able to share my testimony with both Israelis!

When I finally arrived at Sonja's, what was the main thing she talked about from the beginning? Back routes!

May G-d bless you and cause His face to shine upon you always,

Carolyn

Trust and Israel's Salvation - ISRAEL MEDIA MINISTRIES Newsletter - Ze-ev Nevo

Trust and Israel's Salvation

 Ze'ev Nevo

Shalom! I have exciting news! Israel Media Ministries has been accredited by the Evangelical Council of Financial Accountability (ECFA). We are honored to have earned this seal of trustworthiness, as we strive to lead the people of Israel to trust in YESHUA.

Having been accredited by ECFA, we are in the company of organizations like Billy Graham Evangelical Association, Campus Crusade for Christ, Samaritan’s Purse, Dallas Theological Seminary, Fuller Theological Seminary, Child Evangelism Fellowship, The Gideons and others.

Please watch this very short video to learn more about what our accreditation guarantees for you:

My life and ministry are dedicated to reaching Israel with the Gospel, and I’m so thrilled and thankful that the projects we have released online are reaching SO MANY Jewish people!

For example, the “Hear O Israel” project is proclaiming the Gospel of Matthew through YouTube, chapter by chapter, verse by verse, to many thousands of Israelis!! To Watch these videos of the Word of God in HEBREW (with English subtitles) please click here.

As you can see in these videos, our ministry does not exist to give people messages to tickle their ears. We want to present the truth, which pierces the heart. We don’t exist as a ministry that releases funds to missions. We exist to release freedom, healing and restoration to a nation broken by sin and transgression.

Psalm 37:5 tells us “Commit thy way unto the LORD; trust also in Him; and He shall bring it to pass.” We trust in God to provide for this ministry, as he has in the past. It is our desire to see people not just support us, but trust us as well because trust of great value to me.

The year is coming to a close, and many Christian donors pray and deliberate about which ministries they will support. I am encouraged and excited by your generosity, because I know God is going to use you as an instrument of His power. You are an extension of the favor and grace of God. Yes, there may be a tax deduction obtained from your donations, but I believe there are rewards that are far greater!

As you consider your giving and of course, look for organizations that will be good stewards of your investment, please do consider to pray about helping Israel Media Ministries. I am honored to serve with you in introducing Yeshua to the Jewish people, and seeing the nation of Israel be transformed by the compelling power of the Gospel

Please pray with me that God will use us together in a mighty way to lead the people of Israel to TRUST in YESHUA as their personal Lord and Savior!

In these troubling times, when Israel is suffering brutal terror attacks on a daily basis, may the people of Israel proclaim together with us: “Every word of God is pure: He is a shield unto them that put their TRUST in Him.”

Together for Israel's salvation,

Ze'ev

What to Expect in the Prophetic Jubilee - JESSILYN JUSTICE CHARISMA NEWS

Rabbi Jonathan Cahn

What to Expect in the Prophetic Jubilee

Now that we've entered the Year of Jubilee—that is the 50th year after a seven Shemitah cycle—many are wondering what's to come.
In order to provide insight, Rabbi Jonathan Cahn reviewed the last two Jubilees in 1917 and 1967.
The parallels between those years and now are intriguing. For example, both included a major war that affected the Middle East and the land of Israel.
All you have to do is turn on the news to see the similarities now.
Watch the video to see the other parallels.
For a limited time, we are extending our celebration of the 40th anniversary of Charisma. As a special offer, you can get 40 issues of Charisma magazine for only $40!

Evangelical Christian tour groups keep coming to Israel - Joel Rosenberg

Some of The Joshua Fund tour group on the Golan Heights, visiting the Syrian-Israeli border.

Evangelical Christian tour groups keep coming to Israel, despite new wave of terrorism. Here’s the latest.

by joelcrosenberg  Nov. 3, 2015
(Jerusalem, Israel) -- It's been a very challenging Fall here. We're experiencing a wave of terrorism that's been encouraged and incited by Palestinian leaders. It's making big headlines and raising concerns that a "Third Intifada" may be erupting.
Since then, at least 153 Israelis have been wounded, and 11 Israelis have been killed.
Yet, remarkably, Evangelical Christians from all over the world are continuing to come to tour the country and bless Israel, and for this I am deeply grateful.
  • Nearly 200 Evangelicals just spent nearly two weeks here in the Land with The Joshua Fund on our "Prayer & Vision Tour," and we only had a handful of cancellations, despite the violence. [Please scroll through our "Epicenter Team" page on Facebook or through my Twitter account over the past two weeks to see lots of pictures from our tour.]
  • Nearly 150 Evangelicals are here right now with Tony Perkins and Gen. Jerry Boykin on the Family Research Council's first-ever tour of Israel. Indeed, I've had the joy of spending the last several days touring with them, addressing these folks on the Southern Steps of the Temple Mount and on the Mount of Olives, and answering their many questions.
  • Today and tomorrow, Tony and I will join Dr. Jerry Johnson, president of NRB (National Religious Broadcasters) and a group of high-ranking Israeli and European government and business leaders for the Jerusalem Leaders Summit.
It's been enormously encouraging to the Israeli people, the tourism industry, and government leaders to see Christians continuing to come to show our love and solidarity. As the world increasingly turns against Israel at the U.N. and in other international forums, Israelis often feel very much alone. But the steadfast love of Bible-believing Christians is very moving and unexpected here. Especially now.
Thank you -- all of you -- for your faithful prayers for restored calm and security. Please keep praying.
  • Pray for the peace of Jerusalem.
  • Pray for the Lord to comfort and heal all those who have been wounded.
  • Pray for what the Bible calls "peace that passes all comprehension" for the families and friends of those who have been killed.
  • Pray for the Lord to comfort and heal the deep emotional wounds of Palestinian families whose loved ones have turned into terrorists have been captured or killed as they have attacked Israeli citizens.
  • Pray for security forces to have favor and success in stopping terror attacks and restoring the rule of law. The good news is that Israeli security forces have learned over the years how to stop terrorist suicide bombing attacks. They have also created the Iron Dome system to neutralize the impact of rocket attacks by Hamas and other terror groups in Gaza. The bad news is that the terrorists have resorted to using kitchen knives, meat cleavers, broken bottles and cars to attack Israeli civilians, police officers and border guards.
  • Pray that the Lord restrains those who want to do evil, thwarts their plots, and brings them to justice -- and that the Lord would dramatically change the hearts of Palestinian leaders who are inciting young people to attack and kill Jews.
  • Pray for wisdom for Israeli leaders to know exactly how to handle the situation, while also showing compassion towards Israeli Arabs who are citizens of the Jewish State, and compassion on Palestinian Arabs who are not terrorists and are suffering even further because of the actions of evil doers.
  • Pray that the Lord would knit together the hearts of Jewish and Arab followers of Jesus Christ, that we would not let the current violence and tensions divide us, but rather unite us in love, in prayer for the nation and region, and in humble service towards one another.
  • Pray above all that the Holy Spirit would dramatically and supernaturally open the eyes of the lost and the spiritually blind to the truth that Jesus is the Christ foretold in the ancient Biblical prophecies and that only by faith in His death and resurrection can any of us have true divine forgiveness of our sins, peace with God, and hope in this increasingly dark world.
In the days ahead, I hope to share with you more about the Joshua Fund tour. It was a very special time of Bible teaching, prayer, worship, caring for the poor, meeting with Jewish and Arab pastors and ministry leaders, and seeing amazing Biblical sites.
In the days ahead, I also plan to share with you more about the roots of the current violence, about the rumors sweeping through the Palestinian community that Israel is about to destroy the Dome of the Rock and the Al-Aqsa Mosque and build the Third Temple, and the pattern of incitement to violence that we are seeing among far too many Palestinian political and religious leaders.
But for now, I just want to reiterate my heartfelt thanks to all the Christians who are continuing to come to Israel to show the Lord Jesus' love for Jews and Arabs, thank Christians around the world who are praying for us here, and to ask you all to keep praying. That's the most important thing you can do, and Lord knows we need your prayers as much as we ever did. It's not just a physical war underway in this region, it's a white-hot spiritual war, as well. So thank you, and God bless you.
