The Sick, Twisted Meaning Behind Halloween's Jack-O'-Lanterns

The upcoming Halloween celebration dates back to the Druids, who used the holiday for various pagan religious practices including human sacrifice. There is nothing Christian about it.

Yet there is one interesting story about the Halloween celebration that illustrates how the pagans tried to appropriate the stars into their religions. It is the story of the jack-o'-lantern, that pumpkin with a face carved out and a candle inside. This seemingly benign decoration represents a much more gruesome picture from the rituals of past ages: A frightful severed head. And the picture comes straight from the Star Bible, even though the real meaning is very different.

The "jack-o-lantern" in the sky is the star Algol ("evil spirit"). It is part of the constellation Perseus, (the breaker), which is a picture of Christ who breaks open a way for us (Mic. 2:13) and breaks open the seals in Revelation 5. Algol pictures the severed evil head of the nations, the Antichrist, whose head is cut off from the nations when Christ returns (Rev. 19:20). So the frightful jack-o'-lantern is really a picture of the return and triumph of Christ.

The star Algol would have been near the zenith point on Halloween after midnight in druid times 3,000 years ago. Now it can be seen at zenith closer to 11:00 p.m. It is also an interesting object because it is a variable star decreasing in brightness about every 69 hours, with the nearest visible minimum at about 5:00 a.m. on Nov. 4.

How Archaeology Is Thwarting Those Who Want to Rewrite History

The spring 2018 issue of Biblical Archaeology Review announced the retirement of its founder, Hershel Shanks, after 43 years of service.

Mr. Shanks is an example of the impact a dedicated layman can make on the scientific, historic and religious world. Trained as a Harvard lawyer, he fell in love with biblical archaeology on a sabbatical to Jerusalem in 1973. It was Shanks who led the crusade to get the Dead Sea scrolls released by the scholars who had kept them under wraps for 50 years. He also covered the major archaeological controversies where the religious and political fault lines of the Holy Land are played out.

One of the major fault lines comes between the religious and the secular world views of scholars. The secular scholars are constantly attacking the work of earlier Christian and Jewish archaeologists, with a "minimalist" school which argues that such biblical figures as David are mythological. Another line of attack comes from Palestinians who, for political reasons, want to deny Jewish history and try to prevent archaeologists from digging up the Jewish past. There is also an occasional conflict between Jewish and Christian acceptance of findings.

While the BAR, as it is affectionately known, is a secular, not religious, publication, they do try to fairly present the issues. They gleefully reported an artifact which substantiated the existence of the "House of David," to the chagrin of the minimalists. In their January/February 2014 issue, they published an article which proves that the site of David's palace in Jerusalem has been found. Some years back the BAR demolished Palestinian political arguments by proving that the very name of "Palestine" was derived from the Greek word for "wrestler", which translates into the national Hebrew name of "Israel" (He wrestles with God). In their January/February 2016 issue they exposed a New York Times article which falsely cast doubt on the historicity of the Jewish temples, a favorite technique of Palestinian propaganda. In the May/June 2017 issue, eminent archaeologist William G. Dever exposed the fallacies of the "minimalist" view in his article, entitled "Whom Do You Believe—the Bible or Archaeology?".

This Prophetic Sign in the Sky Marked the Most Powerful Moment in History

As the birth of Jesus had been announced by the light of the Star of Bethlehem, so the death of Jesus was announced by the darkness of Calvary. (Luke 23:44-45)

It is not likely that an atmospheric phenomenon caused the unusual darkness because of the astonishment expressed by observers. Further, the cause of the darkness at noon is stated to be cessation of the shinning of the sun, a celestial event. The most logical celestial cause to look for would be a solar eclipse. Indeed, the early Christian writer Africanus quotes two first century historians, Thallus and Phlegon, who both stated that an eclipse occurred during a full moon during the reign of Tiberius.

However, the darkness could not have been caused by an eclipse, because the sun and moon were on opposite sides of the sky during the full moon which marks the Passover and the crucifixion. A similar effect could have been caused by a large celestial body, like some recently discovered in the outer reaches of the solar system, or a stellar cloud, which could have passed between the earth and sun at that time. Alternatively the sun itself could have seemed to black out in a fashion similar to stars such as R-Corona Borealis, which suffer sudden catastrophic decreases in light emission caused by conditions in the stellar atmosphere. Thus, it is possible for the sun to have stopped shining for a time.

If the cause of the sudden solar darkness was celestial, one effect of the darkness would have been to bring the stars into visibility at noon. Off to the west, the Northern Cross would have stood upright on the horizon, aligning with the actual cross when viewed from Jerusalem. South of the Cross Delphinus (the dolphin) promised the resurrection, while to the North Cepheus the King stood directly over Draco the Dragon. Draco lay on the horizon, illustrating the fact that blood of Christ shed at the crucifixion ended Satan's access to heaven as humanity's accuser, and Satan was cast out of heaven down to Earth. (Rev. 12:12).

Directly overhead at noon was the eighth chapter of the Star Bible, Aries (the ram), which pictures the promised victory of the Lamb of God. The constellation shows the sacrifice of Christ, replacing the ram of Abraham sacrificed on the same hill of Zion 2084 years earlier, as confirmed by the star names El Nath (wounded) and Sheratan (bruised). But the slain Lamb of God is also the Lamb who will open the seals of the book of Revelation (Rev. 5:6-14) as we move toward the end of the age.

Christ's enemies at the end of the age are represented by the constellation Cetus (the sea monster) which pictures the same seven-headed beast we see in the book of Revelation (Rev. 13:1 and 17:3). Star names Mira (the rebel), Diphda (the overthrown) and Minkar (bound enemy) confirm the character and fate of Cetus. The one was overthrows and binds Cetus, Christ, is pictured in the constellation Perseus (the breaker), who is shown carrying the severed heads of His enemies in the star Algol (Evil Spirit).

The third constellation associated with Aries is Cassiopeia (the enthroned woman). This constellation reminds us that the nation of Israel, which had rejected Christ and is represented by Andromeda (the chained woman) in the church age, will be restored and lifted up when Christ returns (Isa. 60:1-2).

On April 19, the sun enters Ares, obscuring it in the light. However, you can find Perseus and Cassiopeia near the northwestern horizon in the early evening this week. Cassiopeia is especially easy to find because of its distinctive "W" configuration. Just before sunrise on Easter morning, the Northern Cross and the Resurrection Constellation Delphinus are almost directly overhead. To their south, Mars, representing the blood shed on the cross, comes when 1.3 degrees of Saturn, which promises the Triumph of Jesus.

The stars of the darkness at noon tell us that God keeps His promises, whether they be of grace or judgment. Encourage a friend tonight to move into the grace side of God's promises.

Today's heated debate about immigration for children serves as an ironic reminder of the millions of aborted children whose loss makes immigration a necessity for the U.S.

Infanticide and abortion have always been with us, and it was not until the 1870s that the American Medical Association led the fight to outlaw abortion in the U.S. However, abortion advocates fought back, with Planned Parenthood organizers wanting to abort black children for racial reasons and others wanting to abort babies for genetic or racial purity. Finally, with the sexual revolution and rise of feminism, abortion was forced upon the U.S. by our Supreme Court in 1973. As a result, we've lost about 60 million American babies.

With the advent of legalized abortion and sexual "freedom," the birth rate in the U.S. and the Western world began to fall. As the birthrate in one country after another continued to fall, the birthrate dropped below population replacement rates. As a result, these countries are experiencing declines in population, a phenomenon known as demographic collapse. At the same time, the average age of the population is increasing, leaving fewer workers to meet the needs of society.

Demographic Collapse, in addition to being a spiritual and human tragedy, is an economic disaster. A shrinking population means that economic growth is reversed, causing stagnation and then contraction. Economic contraction means lower tax collections and a reduction in national finances and power. Even worse, the decrease in young workers means that social welfare programs such as government funded retirement and medical benefits become unsustainable. So societies which murder their own children are actually killing their own future.

The process of demographic collapse in the U.S. has moved more slowly for one simple reason: immigration. Immigrants tend to be younger and therefore productive, adding to economic growth and paying into our government welfare systems. Skilled immigrants have helped the U.S. maintain its technological edge, while unskilled immigrants form the backbone of our agriculture, construction and other industries. As far as America is concerned, increased immigration is the price we must pay to replace the millions of babies we have aborted.

As Christians, we must look at America's immigration problems from the perspective of the kingdom of God. After all, the world's mission fields are coming to our neighborhoods, and we will have the opportunity to love them into the kingdom. Many Latin American immigrants are already Christian, with strong family values, and we should reach out to them to help them assimilate and strengthen the kingdom in America.

Let us never forget God's command to treat the aliens among us fairly. This is especially true for the "dreamers," the innocent children of illegal immigrants who have known no other home.

Let us pray that God will save America from demographic collapse, and ask for His wisdom to solve our immigration problems.

Just ten days after the Americans celebrate their Revolution, the French celebrate theirs, on Bastille Day, July 14.

The two revolutions could not have been more different. The Americans honored God in their Declaration of Independence. The French, on the other hand, adopted the atheistic, anti-Christian values of the French Enlightenment and set out to eradicate God from public life. Churches were closed, priests were persecuted and the calendar was remade without any Christian holidays. To replace the Virgin Mary, the revolutionary leaders invented the atheistic "Goddess of Liberty," which became the emblem of godless liberty.

The fruit of the revolutions was also very different. America became a beacon of hope for the world as it worked to make its dream of equality, and God-given rights become a reality. In France, the godless foundation of the revolution meant that all moral restraint on power evaporated, and the infamous Reign of Terror began. Neither life no liberty was safe, and even the revolutionary leaders were carried off one by one. Finally, order was restored, but all hope of liberty vanished under the iron-fisted rule of Napoleon Bonaparte. It turns out that godless liberty is no liberty at all.

Sad to say, the lesson of the French Revolution has been repeated over and over since then. The communist revolutions in Russia, China, Vietnam, Cambodia, Cuba and elsewhere produced massive death and eliminated freedom. The same holds true for the Nazis in Germany and the Fascists in Italy who, like Napoleon, led the whole world into war. The postcolonial socialists in Africa grabbed power after elections, giving rise to the famous statement of "One man, one vote, one time." The same process has also occurred in countries like Venezuela, Argentina and Ecuador where authoritarians have used the promise of godless liberty to subvert Democratic intuitions.

Even in America, our God-given liberties have been eroded by the proponents of godless liberty. Beginning in the 1960s, the government has banned God from our public schools, allowed the murder of the unborn, worked against Christian morality and now mandated same-sex marriage. At the same time, big government has increasingly limited the rights of Americans to exercise freedoms of religion, speech and property. The fruit of godless liberty in America has been fatherlessness, poverty, crime and a government that grows larger while the people grow poorer and smaller.

The success of godless liberty has come about because of failure by the church to preach the gospel of love and truth. Lying pastors condone sexual sin, even gay marriage, when they should be setting people free in the name of Christ. Churches have substituted failed social programs for the life- changing gospel of Christ. And the love of Christ is often hidden behind condemnation, political agendas and church division. America is on the same path which led the great nation of Germany downward from Martin Luther to Adolph Hitler.

Let us pray that the church will repent of its sins and return to the lifesaving work of spreading the gospel and the love of Christ. We must humble ourselves, come together and repent if our land is to be healed.

Why the Church Must Respond to Isaiah's Prophetic Call in This Hour

Thanks to a nice bit of search by Fredrick Baltz, reported in the July/August 2017 issue of Biblical Archeology Review, an important ancient solar eclipse has been brought to light.

The year was 702 B.C. The Assyrian Empire has destroyed the Northern Kingdom of Israel some 20 years before and now was setting its sights on Hezekiah's kingdom of Judah. Then, with the Assyrian threat hanging over his head, King Hezekiah became deathly ill. The prophet Isaiah told him to put his house in order, for he was going to die. But, the king cried out to the Lord, and the Lord sent Isaiah back to the king.

Through Isaiah, God told Hezekiah that He had heard his prayer and would give him is more years of life. Even more, God promised to save Jerusalem from the Assyrians. As a sign, God made the sunlight move backwards on the stairway of Ahaz. Scholars have puzzled over the backwards movement of sunlight, but Fredrick Baltz has shown that the apparent backwards movement of sunlight and shade occurs during solar eclipses. Such an eclipse crossed over the Middle East on March 5, 702 B.C. Later that year there was an eclipse on the first day of the Hebrew repentance season of Teshuvah, inviting the nation to return to God.

Hezekiah's healing apparently emboldened him to stand against the Assyrian army the next year, and as He had promised, God destroyed the Assyrian army surrounding Jerusalem. However, the Bible tells us that Hezekiah became proud (2 Chron. 32:25). He bragged about his wealth to the Babylonians and was rebuked by the prophet Isaiah but was content to avoid disaster in his own lifetime rather than seek revival to save in Israel. Then during the 15 years of life God gave him, he had a son, an heir, but did not train him up in the ways of the Lord. It was his son Manasseh who became the most wicked king of Judah and led the people into the rebellion against God which culminated in the destruction of Jerusalem and the temple by the Babylonians.

Now in 2017, on August 21, God is sending us another Teshuvah eclipse and another chance to repent and return to Him. Like Hezekiah, we have received prophetic words to put our house in order. We have been called to cry out to God as Hezekiah did, and we pray for deliverance. But we must not stop short as Hezekiah did, being content to see peace only in our own lifetime. No, we must ask for nothing less than revival and train up the next generation to carry it forward.

We are asking the church to humble itself and seek God's face, as Hezekiah did, during the 40 days of Teshuvah 2017 which begins with the solar eclipse spanning America on August 21. For more information see our recently released book Teshuvah Eclipses or our website at Teshuvah2017.com.

What the Bull and the Days of Noah Mean for This Generation

This week the sun will enter the constellation Taurus (The Bull) on May 18.

Taurus is the ninth chapter of the Star Bible and is the sign of the Second Coming of Christ. Taurus is a picture of a bull, an ancient symbol of strength. Its bright Star Aldeberan (The Governor) reminds us that Christ will indeed return in strength to rule, with the bright star cluster the Hyades (The Congregated) representing the armies of Heaven returning with Him. The bright constellation Orion (Coming Forth as Light) pictures Christ the warrior preparing to crush the Serpent pictured beneath His feet, and releasing the constellation Eridanus (The River of Fire) upon His enemies. The third constellation, Auriga (The Shepherd), shows Christ's care for His people, as a shepherd protecting them in the time of judgment.

Taurus contains a historical inflection point on its border with the tenth chapter of the Star Bible, Gemini (which represents Christ's reign on Earth). This area of the sky contains the outermost point of our galaxy, where astronomical research shows that the Sun was located on the first day of Noah's Flood. As such, this point represents God's judgment poured out on an evil world and is a reminder that Christ's Return will come as in the days of Noah (Matt 24, 37-39). In fact, the movement of the Summer Solstice into this point in Taurus, scheduled to occur in the year 2121, is one of the main signs of Christ's return in the sun, moon and stars. We cannot know the day or the hour (Matt. 24:36), but we are told there will be signs (Luke 21:25).

As God provided protection for Noah and his family in the Ark, so God will provide for His people on the Day of Judgment (2 Pet. 2:9). The Ark of protection for God's people is the church, and the sun was also at the outermost point of the galaxy on the Feast of Pentecost in 30 AD when the Church was born. This protection is also the message of the constellation Auriga (The Shepherd)    

Early this evening in the Northwest, almost touching the horizon, you can find the constellation Auriga (The Shepherd) reminding us of the grace and protection available in the midst of judgment.

Tonight, enjoy the view and tell someone that there is still time to end up safe in the Ark like Noah.

What the Prophetic Calendar Says About Israel and Jesus' Second Coming

Last week, the stars of the constellation Gemini (The United) were directly overhead at the zenith point in the southern U.S.

Gemini is one of the zodiacal constellations and is the tenth chapter of the Star Bible. The name means "The Twins" in Greek, but in the ancient Hebrew, it means "The United." It is a picture of two men standing together who are united as one. The first contains the bright star Pollux, meaning "He Who Comes to Suffer" at its head, with the Star Alhena, meaning "Wounded" at its feet. This figure corresponds to the first half of Genesis 3:15, where the seed of woman will be wounded in the heel, and is clearly a picture of the crucifixion and First Coming of Christ. The second figure has Castor, "The Ruler" as its head and Mebsuth, "Treading Under Foot" at its feet. This speaks to the second half of Genesis 3:15, where the seed of woman crushes the head of the serpent, and represents the return of Christ. Together, the stars of Gemini tell us that the one who suffered will return to rule.

The bright stars of Gemini, Castor and Pollux are also part of the prophetic calendar which produces signs in the sun, moon and stars surrounding both appearances of Christ. In 6 B.C., the precession of the equinoxes carried the Star Pollux, "He Who comes to Suffer," directly overhead at zenith in Jerusalem. This was a sign of the nearing advent of Christ and described his sacrificial death on the cross. That same year, the constellation Gemini entered the summer season. It was in the summer of 6 B.C., nine months before the star of Bethlehem appeared in the spring of 5 B.C., that we believe Gabriel appeared to Mary and Christ was conceived.  

Now, over 2000 years later, the precession of the equinoxes has carried the star Castor, "The Ruler", close to the zenith point over Jerusalem. This star is a sign of the Second Coming of Christ, when He will return to rule on Earth. It will move to zenith over Jerusalem in 2121 A.D., as Gemini moves out of the summer season and Taurus (the bull), the sign of Christ's Second Coming, moves in. While no one knows the day or hour of Christ's return, we believe that the rebirth of Israel, likened to a fig tree by Jesus (Matt. 24:32), tells us that the prophetic summer season of His return is near. The movement of Castor toward Jerusalem zenith, along with the other signs in the sun, moon and stars, confirms that the prophetic calendar is counting down zero hour.

So look overhead tonight to Castor and Pollux, which mark the time between the First and Second Coming of Christ. And tell someone that there may only be a short time left to accept God's offer of eternal life.
