Tearing Down the Obstacles Blocking Your God-Given Dream by Teresa Shields Parker - Identity Network

Tearing Down the Obstacles Blocking Your God-Given Dream by Teresa Shields Parker

Identity Network Aug. 25, 2017
God has amazing dreams for us, but many of us live our entire lives not coming close to reaching those. As I think about this, I see we fall into three categories:
Those who are just afraid to dream.

Those who understand their dreams but they seem unreachable.
Those who reach their dreams.
I have fallen in all three categories, but without a doubt, the third category is the most satisfying. What we really want is to be satisfied, but that comes with its own challenges, doesn't it?
Scaredy-Cats
An icebreaker question I use in get-acquainted sessions is to share one dream you'd like to see fulfilled in your lifetime. I'm always amazed at how many people can't come up with even one.
When they get down to the bottom line, they usually say, "The truth is I'm afraid to dream, because it might not come true, and then I'd be devastated. I'd rather just be comfortable where I am."
Satisfaction, in this case, is settling for what life deals us. That means we choose to be comfortable living without making a difference. We have allowed the evil one to fulfill his mission of stealing, killing or destroying our God-given influence in the world (John 10:10).
This group usually has dreams, but they don't see them as being something God wants for them. The truth is, God saw us before we were born. Every day of our lives was recorded in His book. Every moment was laid out before a single day of our lives came to pass (Ps. 139:16).
Rocket-to-Mars Guys
I heard about a think-tank type who has a dream of building a rocket to Mars and colonizing the planet. We may not have such lofty dreams, but this man, who is head of a company, actually has resources to at least begin planning a way to make it happen.
Your dream may not be that lofty, but let's just suppose he begins to plan and never makes the dream happen. Has he failed? Not if he's left careful research notes for others to follow.
The dream God put inside you may not be reachable in your lifetime, but it may still be a dream that God has placed in your heart. We should not dismiss those ideas that flit across our mind. They may be God-dreams to fulfill something in the lifetime of one who comes after us.
"God can do anything, you know—far more than you could ever imagine or guess or request in your wildest dreams. He does it not by pushing us around, but by working within us, his Spirit deeply and gently within us" (Eph. 3:20a, MSG).
The Diligent Workers
We see in the parable of the talents that a company owner who was going on a trip gave some talents or money to three of his employees (Matt. 25:14-20). To one he gave $5000, the other $2,000 and the third $1,000.
The first two doubled their money, but the third hid the money and returned it to the owner. We all know the owner gave the third employee's money to the one who risked the most and basically fired the third employee.
Did the first employee reach his dream? Maybe or maybe not. But what the owner did was reward that one's diligence, his ability to see beyond the current situation and reach further. In doing so, God said, "OK, now do it again with this money."
How to Reach Your Dream
Reaching a God-given dream seems hard, but it's really simple. God put dreams inside of us. We just need to realize that and cooperate with Him to make them come to pass. The worst thing we can do is dismiss them because someone tells us we can never do them or if we do we can never make a living working at them.
I was told by several adults when I was growing up that I could never make money writing books. I remembered that this April when I had to tally up what I'd made in books sales to give to my tax accountant. I was pleasantly surprised that it was a consistent income. Not yet enough to live on, but enough to debunk the lie that was told to me when I was deciding on a career.
Being an author was a dream God placed in my heart long before there was a real way for me to accomplish that dream. I clearly see how He led me to get to the place where I finally made the leap into God's dreamland.
There are three simple steps to reach a dream. I say simple because they are no-brainer practical ways to go step-by-step and allow God to bring your dream into fruition. These are the same steps many whom we see as dream-reachers began with. By the way, these came from my mentor.
Do what you love.
Find a way to make money doing that.
Live within that budget.
What's the Problem?
Simple, right? So why isn't everyone doing it? It has to do with that pesky word satisfied. We think we won't be satisfied living within that budget.
However, if we start there, things will only blossom and increase when and if we are doing what we love. What do we love? We love the dream that God put in our hearts.
So how do we do it? How do we reach the impossible dream? Learn the secret of contentment."I have learned in whatever state I am to be content. I know both how to face humble circumstances and how to have abundance. Everywhere and in all things I have learned the secret, both to be full and to be hungry, both to abound and to suffer need. I can do all things because of Christ who strengthens me" (Phil. 4:11-13, MEV).
We have to learn that we will never be satisfied with things, especially comfort foods. (You knew I had to get that in there somewhere.)  We will only be satisfied with the true abundance God brings into our lives.
What is your dream? What obstacles are in your way of fulfilling your dream? What is one step you can take today towards that dream?

The Real Reason the Enemy Is Targeting You Right Now - TERESA SHIELDS PARKER CHARISMA MAGAZINE

The enemy has a plan for your life. (Seth Doyle)

Spirit-Led Woman
The SpiritLed Woman podcast is empowering women weekly to follow their purpose in Christ and boldly walk in faith. Listen at charismapodcastnetwork.com.

Do you know that the enemy believes in your greatness more than you do? Why do you think you are battling fear, discouragement, frustration and brokenness? The enemy would not mess with you if you were no threat to him, if you were not about to step into your destiny.
Stirring
He knows beyond a shadow of a doubt God is preparing you for greater things, greater vision, greater impact on the world. He knows it because he feels the movement in your spirit, the turning of your heart towards God. Until he sees that, he knows he doesn't have to work hard to keep you ineffective. When God begins stirring your spirit, the evil one wakes up and starts to work.
He puts together an action plan designed specifically to thwart your forward advance. He knows he can't stop God, but he also knows he's stopped you before and he'll try again. Why? Because his main mission is to "steal, kill and destroy"1 your destiny.
Most of the time, he doesn't have to work hard. It doesn't take much to throw you off course. All he has to do is throw together a few things that he knows will cause fear to rise up in you, and then he's got you.
Fear
Fear is one of his biggest weapons because it's just False Evidence Appearing Real. In other words, he does what he does best. He lies to you. He loves to do that. He's a master at it. "When he lies, he speaks from his own nature, for he is a liar and the father of lies."2
He whispers half-truths and lies and builds them in your mind until you are so afraid you cannot move. Paralyzed with fear, you cower and hide. "It would be better for me to go back to the way I was," you tell yourself. "At least then I didn't have all these things coming against me."
It's exactly what the children of Israel said in the wilderness. They wanted to go back because they were afraid they would die. Even the being in bondage in Egypt looked better than going through what they had to go through to get to the Promised Land.3
Destiny Sign
Don't worry, though, you can immediately recognize what he is doing. It's like he's flashing a neon arrow right at the very thing that will move you to your next step into your destiny.
Just look at what you afraid of. He's going to throw a roadblock of fear so you won't go forward. So stop and think through this. What is the biggest thing you are afraid of? Where is your greatest area of resistance? What causes you to say, "That's impossible? I could never do that."
Just remember what Joseph said to his brothers: "you intended to harm me, but God intended it for good."4
Many things look impossible, but when you surrender and allow God to take over, all things are possible.5
Possibilitarian
God makes you a possibilitarian when you finally get a vision for what He is doing in you and on the earth. Of course things are impossible in your own strength.
When you surrender your weaknessesat His feet, God says, "Good, now you're ready to take this on, because you can't, but I can through you. When you are weak, then I am strong."7
Courage
What if when fear starts rising up in you, instead of running the other way, you run towards it. You take God at His Word and do what He says. "Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go."8
In the strength and power of God, you walk towards the fear and right through it because on the other side of that fear is your breakthrough, your greater, your appointment with destiny.
Promised Land
Kris Vallotton of Bethel Church says it this way, "On the other side of fear is your Promised Land." Vallotton goes on to say that of the 10 who went to spy out the Promised Land, eight came back afraid of giants in the land. Look back at the scriptures. They never encountered a giant in the Promised Land until Goliath during David's time. "They were afraid of an illusion. They saw what they feared," he said.
What are you afraid of? God is not worried about it. He sees you as a mighty person of valor, just like he did Gideon hiding out in the winepress.8 God sees beyond your circumstances to your destiny.
He's already got it prepared for you. Now, hand your fear to Him and just walk into your greater.

Why You Won't Lose Weight From Eating Less, Exercising - TERESA SHIELDS PARKER CHARISMA MAGAZINE

There's a hunger inside of you that can't be satisfied with food.
There's a hunger inside of you that can't be satisfied with food. (Charisma archives)

My heart is hurting today. It's not that anything out of the ordinary happened. It's not that anyone close to me passed away. It's that I have this great burden for those who are caught in the overwhelming stress of life that leads them down the path of continual weight gain. Everyone is looking for answers, but almost no one wants the real answer.
I got an email recently. Essentially it said, "I'm reading your book and I am confused. You say you've been on low-carb diets and gained the weight back again. Now you're on a low-carb diet and losing the weight and keeping it off. What changed?"
What Is the Problem?
In my response, I put on the coach's hat and said, "Obviously, it's not about what we eat." Then I told her reread Sweet Grace and look for the hidden keys. "They are not so hidden."
We always go to what we eat as the cause of the angst we feel over our weight loss. Doctors will tell you what they always use to tell me, eat less and move more. Let me tell you, when I had over 250 pounds to lose, that sounded like Charlie Brown's teacher. Wah Wah Wah!
It is true on a very basic level, but it doesn't get at the core of why we eat. Without going to that deep place, we will always eat more than we should and continue to gain weight.
We Are Complex
Changing our mindsets is vital. However, in order to do that, we have to go to the root of why we eat when we are not physically hungry. It is head hunger, plain and simple. Part of it is physical if I eat foods which are addictive to me, but the reason I eat those foods is out of an emotional need.
We are very complex human beings. We know we need to change. We have good intentions and then something goes haywire when we try to implement it. There are many layers to this, but it starts with acknowledging we have a problem that goes deeper than sticking to an eating plan.
Stress from working long hours, stress from bills, stress from relationships, stress from not eating right, stress from not working out, stress from not being spiritual enough, stress from giving in to temptation, stress from not doing our daily devotions ... stress, stress, stress is a major culprit. We eat to stave off stress and then we get more stressed because it shows on the scale.
Live Freely and Lightly
Here's what God has to say about that. "Are you tired? Worn out? Burned out on religion? Come to Me. Get away with Me and you'll recover your life. I'll show you how to take a real rest. Walk with Me and work with Me—watch how I do it. Learn the unforced rhythms of grace. I won't lay anything heavy or ill-fitting on you. Keep company with Me, and you'll learn to live freely and lightly."1
Wouldn't that be awesome to live freely and lightly? These verses tell us it is possible to stop the spinning for a minute and let God lead. I'm not saying to do forced Bible study, though studying the Bible is great.
Let God Minister to You
I'm saying to allow God to minister to you as only He can. Running to food when we are stressed does not hold a candle to running to the only One who can really comfort us, the precious Holy Spirit, the Comforter Himself.
When is the last time you took even five minutes to soak in His presence, focusing only on Him and asked Him, "Holy Spirit, what do you want me to know today? I invite You to lead me every step of the way today. I invite You fully into each moment. Speak to me."
We do not have to worry. His yoke is "easy"2 because we are joined in this battle with Him. We don't have to pull alone. He's pulling with us. As long as we are going His direction, "the yoke is easy to bear, and the burden is light."2
I Am Weak
It's OK that I am weak. God delights it my weakness. Losing 260 pounds has been the easiest hard thing I've ever done because I surrendered my weakness to Him.
He says, "My grace is enough. It's all you need. My strength comes into its own in your weakness." His grace is all the power I need to take the next step out of overwhelming difficulty and heaviness into living freely and lightly.
Are You Weak?
Are you weak today? That's awesome, because when you let Christ take over, the weaker you get, the stronger you become.4 Stop doing this in your own strength. Stop trying to bear your burdens alone. He's ready to shoulder them if you just take your hands off.

Two Words We're All Tempted to Say: I Quit - TERESA SHIELDS PARKER CHARISMA MAGAZINE SPIRITLED WOMAN

We're often told not to quit, but sometimes it's actually a good thing.

Two Words We're All Tempted to Say: I Quit

Spirit-Led Woman

I quit everything. Nothing I was doing was what I really wanted to do, and it was killing me. I had to focus on loving and taking care of myself, or I wouldn't be around to do anything anymore.
I had started gaining weight again after having the monster fix of gastric bypass surgery. Most everyone who has the surgery loses weight at first. With less weight and more energy, I began my normal trend of doing everything anyone asked me to do.
No Time for Help
I sat on any board of directors of any organization who asked. I wrote articles for organizations, published their newsletters, helped promote events, led small groups, led various training events, helped with seminars, built a website, started blogging, served on church committees, ran a business and managed a family, which included doing laundry, grocery shopping, bill paying and fixing meals.
Nothing I was doing was bad. Everything I had my hand in was good, and I liked helping others. I just didn't have enough hands to do it all. When that happens to me, I turn to food to stave off the overwhelming burdens I feel.
About a year after surgery, I discovered I could eat sugar and other foods I couldn't before. Surgery did not fix the core reasons why I ate in the first place. I began eating all my old comfort foods again. Before I knew it, I was once again in the morbid obesity category.
"Enough is enough," I said. "I'm doing something about this."
Working on Me
I had to understand what my issues were such as, why do I keep running back to certain foods whenever I can? I needed help, but I had no time for help. Understanding that monumental truth helped me revise my to do list.
One at a time, I let go of the priorities everyone else had for me. I quit everything.
Then, I started working on me. I began going to a weight loss group. I started seeing a holistic doctor who helped me start various vitamins, minerals and natural hormone supplements. I saw an allergist and a chiropractor who both believe in wellness therapy. I got a trainer, and began seeing a physical therapist.
I exercised at least six days a week for an hour. I stopped eating sugar and flour and started eating protein, vegetables and fruits. I took life purpose coaching training, which also helped me understand myself more.
Most importantly, I allowed God to teach me what my core issues were, and how to walk through forgiving others, renouncing lies and hearing God's truth for my life. I allowed God to transform every part of me—body, soul and spirit.
I also evaluated the things I had been doing. Was there anything I had been doing which tugged at a deep part of me? Something I truly missed? What was the cry of my heart, the thing that made me tick?
Write the Vision
Among the entire list of things, the one I loved the most was blogging and writing. Years ago, I chose a life verse. This needs to be one that shouts at me every time I see it in Scripture or think about it.
Mine is: "Write the vision. Make it plain so those that read it may run with it" (Hab. 2:2). There it is. That's who I am. Everything else pales in comparison to that. If I have to choose one life action, that would be it.
It's not just about writing. It's about writing the things which matter in a way that will help people incorporate the truths into their lives. In order to do that, I have to be connected to the One who makes my one thing matter.
Vibrating With Life
Trusting God with my entire heart means not leaning on what I think, rationalize or understand, but surrendering completely to Him. When I do that, He will show me the next step.
God says surrendering to Him brings results that align with my ultimate goal of being whole, healthy and happy, living a life full to overflowing with His purposes.
That's what began to happen when I quit everything and concentrated on only doing what fit into His purpose for me.
I decided to love myself in the same way God loves me. I decided to listen to that still, small voice inside, and be the best me possible. I decided to run with the thing that makes me light up inside. In the process, I lost weight, but gained so much more.
