Joel C. Rosenberg's Blog: Who will it be? One of the most consequential decisions of the Trump presidency...

New post on Joel C. Rosenberg's Blog

Who will it be? One of the most consequential decisions of the Trump presidency will be announced Thursday. Here’s the latest on the “short list” for the Supreme Court. Let us pray without ceasing.

by joelcrosenberg
President Trump will announce on Thursday his choice to replace the late-Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia. Trump may choose the venue of the National Prayer Breakfast, to be held at the Washington Hilton that morning. That would be fitting. This will be an enormous political and spiritual battle, and we need to be on our knees in prayer.
Make no mistake: choosing the next Supreme Court Justice will be one of the most consequential decisions of the Trump presidency. It will also be a critical test of how serious he is in keeping his promises to conservatives and Evangelicals to appoint solid, experienced, pro-life, pro-freedom, Constitutional conservatives to the High Court.
Let us pray without ceasing for the President to have the wisdom to make the right choice. Let's be praying, too, for the Senate to have the wisdom to confirm that person quickly.
Rumor has it there are now just three names on the President's short list -- Neil Gorsuch, Thomas Hardiman and William Pryor, each of whom are federal Appeals Court judges, and all under the age of 55. Some say Gorsuch is the favorite, and Pryor's chances are fading.
A very conservative source I have who is close to the selection process tells me the list is down to just Gorsuch and Hardiman and says "both would be excellent" choices.
Here are brief but useful profiles of each of the three, via SCOTUSblog:

Trump Presidency: So Far, So Good For Israel - Israel Today

Trump Presidency: So Far, So Good For Israel

Sunday, November 20, 2016 |  Israel Today Staff
Israel has high expectations for the presidency of Donald Trump, and the Republican president-elect’s first round of political appointments did not disappoint.
Trump at the weekend named Rep. Michael Pompeo as the next director of the CIA, and Lt.-Gen. (ret.) Michael Flynn as his National Security Advisor.
Both Pompeo and Flynn have taken hard lines in regards to Islamic terror, and both are believed to be opposed to the Iran nuclear agreement.
Pompeo is also a retired Army officer, and a graduate of both West Point and Harvard Law School. Troubling to many liberals is his advocacy for government surveillance and the use of “enhanced” interrogation against foreign terrorists.
“These positions and others merit serious public scrutiny through a confirmation process,” insisted Anthony Romero, executive director of the American Civil Liberties Union.
But Pompeo will face a Republican-dominated Congress, and is already well-regarded by many Democrats, including those with whom he disagrees.
“Mike is very bright and hard-working, and will devote himself to helping the agency develop the best possible intelligence for policy makers,” said Rep. Adam Schiff, the top Democrat on the House Intelligence Committee. “I know that he is someone who is willing to listen and engage.”
Israel is most pleased by Pompeo’s outright opposition to the Iran nuclear agreement. “I look forward to rolling back this disastrous deal with the world’s largest state sponsor of terrorism,” he tweeted last week.
General Flynn is a bit more of a mixed bag. He has said controversial things about the liberal Jewish community in America. At the same time, he is very warm toward Israel, and will take a no-nonsense approach to combatting the forces of radical Islam.

Israel Looks Toward a Future with a Trump Presidency - Chris Mitchell CBN News

Israel Looks Toward a Future with a Trump Presidency
CBN News Chris Mitchell 11-10-2016

JERUSALEM, Israel  The nation of Israel has been closely watching the presidential election, knowing whoever America chose could dramatically change the future of the Jewish state.
With Republican Donald Trump as the new president elect, many are unsure what the next four years hold for the Middle East, especially Israel.
CBN News Middle East Bureau Chief Chris Mitchell weighed in on what Israelis were thinking about America's new president.
Watch the Full Interview Above
"The reaction like many people in the United States is one of shock," Chris Mitchell said. "I think we were really taken aback by this Trump victory."
Many Israelis felt much more than shock, but disappointment as many were hoping for Hillary Clinton to take the White House.
"Many people were expecting a Hillary Clinton win and were hoping for a Hillary Clinton win.
However, Mitchell says Israelis are confident they have a strong leader.
"They see Donald Trump as a strong leader and I think they see that as something that is going to benefit and help Israel," he said.
Trump has continually said he will be a strong supporter of Israel and commended the leadership of Benjamin Netanyahu.
His foreign policy decisions while president could mean a big difference in the struggle over a two state solution and nuclear Iran.
"I think they see a strong connection between the Jewish state and a Donald Trump administration," Mitchell said.

Joel C. Rosenberg's Blog - Seven more reasons a Trump presidency would be a catastrophe.

Seven more reasons a Trump presidency would be a catastrophe. Trump must be stopped.

by joelcrosenberg
Today is Super Tuesday. Barring a miracle, Donald J. Trump will win decisive victories across the nation. Despite saying some of the most despicable things I've ever heard any  presidential candidate in either party say, Trump continues rising in the polls. Many analysts believe he's well on the road to winning the Republican nomination for president.
This would be an utter disaster. The threat Trump poses to the health and well-being of the American people and her republic cannot be overstated. Trump must be stopped.
On January 31st, I published a column laying out "32 reasons a Trump presidency would be a catastrophe for America." I provided links to one direct quote after by Donald Trump himself demonstrating how unprepared he would be for the presidency. I also provided evidence that he is trying to hoodwink Evangelical Christians into thinking he is one of us, and and that he is trying to hijack the conservative moment by claiming to support conservative policies today that have not been his positions for the rest of his decades in the public spotlight.
But every few days, we learn more about this man that shows how completely disqualified he is from serving as President, and how dangerous he would be as Commander-in-Chief.
What follows are seven more reasons. Study them carefully. They are chilling. The former head of the Ku Klux Klan is actively supporting Trump. This former KKK Grand Wizard is urging his supporters to do everything possible to elect Trump. White supremacists all over the country are supporting Trump. Trump is happily re-Tweeting their praise of him. When Trump has been asked to condemn the KKK and its leaders and all white supremacists and reject their votes, he repeatedly refuses to do so.
But that's not all. Trump has repeatedly praised Chinese and North Korean communist leaders for how they violently suppress pro-democracy dissenters in their countries. Trump has criticized past Soviet leadership for not using more violence to suppress the pro-democracy in the USSR. What's more, Trump repeatedly calls for violence against those who disagree with him and those who protest him at his campaign rallies.
I strongly urge you to carefully read through these examples. Click on the links and read the articles carefully. Share this material with family and friends. There are many more example, but these are important to focus on right now.
If you are in one of the Super Tuesday states, please go vote today for a serious, sound conservative. Vote for a candidate who has a realistic, serious chance of stopping Trump, winning the nomination, and putting a conservative in the White House next January. At this point, that would be either Sen. Marco Rubio or Sen. Ted Cruz. Yes, both have flaws and weaknesses. But both are born again Christians. Both believe in the Constitution. Either would be vastly better than Mr. Trump.
Even though Lynn and I are living overseas with our sons, we are still American citizens, and gladly so. We deeply love the United States. We are deeply burdened by how dangerous this moment is, that the GOP could end up nominating a man like Trump. We are horrified that many Evangelical Christians are either actively helping Trump, or making excuses for him, or not registering or turning out to vote against him and for someone who really is qualified to be President.
We are proud legal residents of Virginia. Thus, we have voted by Absentee Ballot. We are not going to say who we voted for you. Prayerfully make your own decision. But we definitely voted against Trump.
Have you voted yet? The stakes for America are incredibly high. Do your civic duty. And pray faithfully, earnestly, and consistently throughout today -- and the days ahead -- that the Lord would block Mr. Trump and have mercy on the country.
  1. Last month, David Duke, a white supremacist who was once Grand Wizard of the Ku Klux Klan, announced he was supporting Trump, and urged his followers to do all they could to help Trump get elected. "Voting against Donald Trump at this point is really treason to your heritage,” Duke said on the David Duke Radio Program Wednesday. “I do support his candidacy, and I support voting for him as a strategic action. I hope he does everything we hope he will do.”
  2. Trump was asked three times on CNN to "unequivocally condemn David Duke and say that you don't want his vote or that of other white supremacists?" and three times he refused to do so. [See also, Donald Trump Refuses to Condemn KKK, Disavow David Duke Endorsement, a story in Time magazine.]
  3. Last week, 62% of the messages Trump re-Tweeted were from white supremacists. "Is Trump riling up the white nationalists by lending them his 5-million-follower megaphone whenever they praise him?" asked one reporter. "Or are racists, who love Trump for his anti-immigration polemics, just more likely than others to send [him]...the kind of praise he likes to retweet? " {See also this article in the New York Times, "Donald Trump’s Message Resonates With White Supremacists"; and a press release from the Anti-Defamation League, "ADL to Donald Trump: Distance Yourself from White Supremacists and Disavow Their Ideology."]
  4. David Duke told Fox News, "Do whatever you need to get elected."
  5. Trump has praised the ruthless dictator of North Korea, Kim Jong-un, for how he "wipes out" his political opponents. “You’ve got to give him credit," Mr Trump said. "How many young guys — he was like 26 or 25 when his father died — take over these tough generals, and all of a sudden — you know, it’s pretty amazing when you think of it. How does he do that?...[H]e goes in, he takes over, he’s the boss. It’s incredible....He wiped out the uncle, he wiped out this one, that one. This guy doesn’t play games and we can’t play games with him. Because he really does have missiles and he really does have nukes."
  6. Trump has praised the Chinese communists for the way they brutalized pro-democracy protestors in Tianamen Square in 1989 and has said he thinks the Communist government in the Soviet Union weren't brutal enough suppressing dissent. “Russia is out of control and the leadership knows it," Trumptold a reporter in 1990. "That’s my problem with Gorbachev. Not a firm enough hand.” His interviewer asked, “You mean firm hand as in China?” Trump answered, “When the students poured into Tiananmen Square, the Chinese government almost blew it. Then they were vicious, they were horrible, but they put it down with strength. That shows you the power of strength. Our country is right now perceived as weak … as being spit on by the rest of the world.”
  7. Trump often talks about wanting to engage in violence, particularly against those who disagree with him. Last November, Trump directed his private security detail to an African American protestor, saying, “Get him the hell out of here, will you, please? Get him out of here. Throw him out!” His supporters proceeded to punch and kick the man. Later, Trump defended his supporters, telling Fox News, “Maybe he should have been roughed up, because it was absolutely disgusting what he was doing." At a campaign rally in early February, Trump urged his supporters to "beat the crap" out of people who might disrupt the event by throwing tomatoes -- and then promised to pay their legal fees if they got in trouble."So if you see someone getting ready to throw a tomato, knock the crap out of ‘em. Would you? Seriously. Ok? Just knock the hell—I promise you, I will pay for the legal fees. I promise. I promise." Later that month at another campaign rally, security removed an unruly protester, but Trump said he wished stronger action could be taken. “The guards are being very gentle with him,” Trump said. “I’d like to punch him in the face, I’ll tell you that.”
This man cannot be allowed to become the President of the United States. God have mercy on each of us, and on this great country.
