Robin McMillan: Mighty Works: A Key To Saving Our Nation - The Elijah List

Robin McMillan:
The Elijah List

Robin McMillanPursuit for Mercy

Toward the end of His earthly ministry, Jesus issued a strong judgment against Capernaum, but within it I find an overlooked and hopeful promise for us, our cities, and our nation.

"And you, Capernaum, who are exalted to Heaven, will be brought down to Hades; for if the mighty works which were done in you had been done in Sodom, it would have remained until this day. But I say to you that it shall be more tolerable for the land of Sodom in the day of judgment than for you" (Matthew 11:23-24).

In Genesis 18 the Lord and two angels visited Abraham and Sarah for dual purposes: They came to affirm God's promise to give them a child of their own, and to visit Sodom and Gomorrah to investigate firsthand the grave nature of the sin of its inhabitants. First, the Lord affirmed His promise to the couple, then discussed with Abraham His plan concerning the land of Sodom.

Then the men rose from there and looked toward Sodom, and Abraham went with them to send them on the way. And the Lord said, "Shall I hide from Abraham what I am doing, since Abraham shall surely become a great and mighty nation, and all the nations of the earth shall be blessed in him? For I have known him, in order that he may command his children and his household after him, that they keep the way of the Lord, to do righteousness and justice, that the Lord may bring to Abraham what He has spoken to him."

And the Lord said, "Because the outcry against Sodom and Gomorrah is great, and because their sin is very grave, I will go down now and see whether they have done altogether according to the outcry against it that has come to Me; and if not, I will know." Genesis 18:16-21

God revealed his heart by involving Abraham as He considered what must be done in Sodom and Gomorrah. It is obvious the Lord didn't want to destroy it, and so engaged Abraham in a conversation that could possibly change the outcome. Abraham appealed to God based on His goodness and righteousness.

(Photo via Wikimedia Commons)

"Suppose there were fifty righteous within the city; would You also destroy the place and not spare it for the fifty righteous that were in it? Far be it from You to do such a thing as this, to slay the righteous with the wicked, so that the righteous should be as the wicked; far be it from You! Shall not the Judge of all the earth do right?"(Genesis 18:24-25).

Abraham appealed to the Lord, "Shall not the Judge of all the earth do right?"

Surely He would not slay the righteous with the wicked, Abraham must have thought. Would God do such a thing if fifty righteous people lived there?

God agreed to spare the city if but fifty righteous lived there. We know the rest of the story. Abraham continued to intercede, reducing the number of righteous people until he stopped at just ten righteous ones living there. Each time the Lord adjusted His decision to destroy them.

Then he said, "Let not the Lord be angry, and I will speak but once more: Suppose ten should be found there?" And He said, "I will not destroy it for the sake of ten." Genesis 18:32

Of note to me is Abraham's persistent pursuit for mercy. Some in our generation are calling for God to judge and destroy people, cities, and nations – but Abraham looked for reasons for God to extend mercy. God seemed to like that attitude, too.

Perhaps those who call for judgment do not believe that God can and will raise up those who walk in the kind of power that Jesus referred to in His denouncement of Capernaum.

I believe the righteous response in our generation is for many to pursue the Lord for a fresh and extraordinary anointing for healing and miracles.

We should ask the Lord, "How can we partner with You to see our cities restored?" Might that be the higher road?

Our Example To Follow: The Father Of Our Faith

"Listen to Me, you who follow after righteousness, you who seek the Lord: Look to the rock from which you were hewn, and to the hole of the pit from which you were dug. Look to Abraham your father, and to Sarah who bore you; for I called him alone, and blessed him and increased him."

For the Lord will comfort Zion, He will comfort all her waste places; He will make her wilderness like Eden, and her desert like the garden of the Lord; joy and gladness will be found in it, thanksgiving and the voice of melody. Isaiah 51:1-3

(Photo via Wikimedia Commons)

Abraham is called our Father of Faith and is an example for the kind of attitudes and actions we should demonstrate toward the wicked and rebellious. Such were some of us...actually, all of us...so deserving of God's judgment and destruction. Yet the Lord Himself delighted in Abraham's appeal and wanted to involve him in the outcome.

Intercession Alone – Not Enough To Save Sodom

Some have concluded, and rightly so, that intercession like Abraham's plays a significant role in saving cities. What would have happened if Abraham had not stopped at ten but appealed to the mercy of God if but one righteous person lived within that wicked place? We don't know, but perhaps just one person, one righteous person living there, could have made the difference. We see that Lot and his family did not qualify as ones who were able to turn the tide, but should there have been enough righteous people in Sodom and Gomorrah, people who moved in power, Jesus said it would have existed another 2,000 years!

But, intercession alone would not have saved Sodom and Gomorrah. It would have taken someone who operated in "mighty works," for Jesus said..."if the mighty works which were done in you had been done in Sodom, it would have remained until this day" (Matthew 11:23b).

Think of it. Jesus said that Sodom and Gomorrah would have continued at least 2,000 more years if someone could have done there the mighty works Jesus did when He lived in Capernaum. They would have repented in light of that kind of demonstration, and the region would have averted its horrible fate.

(Photo via Wikimedia Commons)

What then constitutes a righteous man? Is it intercession alone?

No, it is an intercessor who also moves in the power of signs and wonders. Both of those characteristics contain the ability to produce repentance and restoration. Is it absolute? No. It wasn't enough for Capernaum, but Jesus said it would have been enough to have saved a place as evil as Sodom!

I Was Startled By Unexpected Enlightenment: New Year's Eve Revelation

One recent New Year's Eve my wife and I stayed at home, the only time in decades when we didn't attend a time of corporate worship ushering in the New Year. We both retired around10:00 PM. Beside our beds we each have lamps that I inherited from my parents, who had them for years before we did, and we now have had them for over 15 years. At 10:38 PM my wife's lamp suddenly turned on of its own accord. It had never done that before and has not done it since. Although she was sound asleep, I wasn't. I awoke her, saying, "Donna, your light just turned on...by itself!" She sat up in bed a little confused by it all, turned it off, and went right back to sleep.

I was greatly startled by the unexpected "enlightenment." How does your bedside lamp turn itself on? I believed an angel did it. I know that can be debated, but at least I knew God was speaking to me through it. When I reviewed the facts with her the next morning, she told me that she thought it was just a fluke, because the lamp was old and had become increasingly more difficult to turn on! I thought, "Well, that further confirms to me that the Lord is speaking through the occurrence, because if it is harder than normal to turn it on, someone invisible was 'strong enough' to do it without our help!"

(Photo via Freeimages)

When it happened, I noticed the exact time: 10:38 PM, and felt that time represented a Bible verse that immediately came to mind – Acts 10:38:
"...how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power, who went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with Him."

God Is Able To Save Whole Families, Whole Cities, Even Whole Nations

I got my New Year's message that night. God turned the light on Acts 10:38It is time for an anointing from Jesus where everyone gets healed! In reading the Wuest Expanded Translation, I am amazed at how many times Jesus healed every one of every sickness and disease.

And He was going around in the whole of Galilee, teaching in their synagogues and making a public proclamation of the good news regarding the Kingdom, and healing all chronic and serious disease and all occasional illness among the people. And the report concerning Him went off into the whole of Syria. And they brought to Him all those who were in a miserable condition physically, suffering with various kinds of chronic and serious ailments and acute pains, and those who were demonized and epileptic and paralytic, and He healed them...Matthew 4:23-25, Wuest Expanded Translation

And Jesus was going about all the cities and the villages, teaching in their synagogues and making a public proclamation of the good news concerning the Kingdom, and healing every disease and every sickness. Matthew9:35, Wuest Expanded Translation

(Photo via Wikimedia Commons)

Now, when Jesus came to know it, He withdrew from there, and many people followed with Him. And He healed them all. Matthew 12:15, Wuest Expanded Translation

And there came to Him large crowds having with them those who were lame, maimed, blind, dumb, and many others having illnesses of a different nature, and they flung them to the ground at His feet. And He healed them, so that the crowd marvelled, seeing those who had been dumb speaking, and those who had been maimed whole, and those who had been lame walking about, and those who had been blind, seeing. And they glorified the God of Israel.Matthew 15:30-31, Wuest Expanded Translation

It was normal for Jesus to heal every one of every thing. He healed those who had "chronic and serious disease and all occasional illness," and "all those who were in a miserable condition physically, suffering with various kinds of chronic and serious ailments and acute pains...epileptic and paralytic"...and those who "were lame, maimed, blind, dumb, and many others having illnesses of a different nature."

In the Gospel of Matthew alone the Bible records at least SIX times that Jesus healed everyone of everything! I only quoted Matthew's Gospel to show the frequency of Jesus healing all. Will He do the same today? Yes, for Jesus does today what He did yesterday and that He will do forever, just as the writer of the Book of Hebrews affirms: "Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever" (Hebrews 13:8).

What would happen if Jesus anointed people at that level today? It would be amazing. Once again people from all levels and strata of society would flock to get healed. We must not settle for less than that.

God is able to save whole families, whole cities, even whole nations with that level of mighty works.

It may mean the difference in wholesale destruction or the restoration of our nation. If it could have saved Sodom and Gomorrah and preserved that city for an additional 2,000 years, what could it do for our beloved nation today?

Joel Rosenberg - With prophetic implications - the region of Iraq. What does it mean?

Joel C. Rosenberg's Blog

With prophetic implications, the Kurds, known as the Medes in the Bible, seize oil-rich region of Iraq. What does it mean?

by joelcrosenberg
kurdistan-map(Washington, D.C.) -- Could recent developments in Iraq have prophetic implications? Actually, the answer may be yes -- especially with regards to the Kurdish people who live in northern Iraq. Let me explain.
As we've been seeing in recent weeks, the Radical jihadist forces of the "Islamic State of Iraq & al-Sham" (ISIS) are on the move towards Baghdad. They are leaving a trail of bloodshed and carnage in their wake.
The objective of the ISIS leaders is to topple the Iraqi government, seize control of all of Iraq, establish a jihadist state under Sharia law, and use Iraq to begin a regional -- and eventually global -- Islamic caliphate, or kingdom.
Now, the Kurdish leaders have taken advantage of the chaos of this moment to seize control of the oil-rich region of Kirkuk for themselves. (see AP story below)
The oil fields of Kirkuk have been a long-standing issue of controversy in Iraq, especially since the liberation of the country in 2003. Whoever controls those fields would control enormous wealth as the oil there is more fully developed and shipped to markets around the globe.
The Kurds, generally, are Sunni Muslims, but they are not ethnically Arabs. Indeed, many Kurds have a deep hatred for the Arabs. Several decades ago, the world create a special, protected, autonomous region for the Kurds in the north region of Iraq, after Saddam Hussein repeated attacked and tried to destroy the Kurds, including with the use of chemical weapons.
Ultimately, many Kurds want to create an independent country of their own, uniting Kurds living in Iraq, Iran, Syria and Turkey. Yet each of those national governments strongly oppose the creation of an independent Kurdistan.
What's fascinating is that the modern Kurdish people were known in ancient, Biblical times as the Medes. Here is where things get interesting.
Bible prophecy indicates that in the End Times, as we get closer to the Second Coming of Jesus Christ, God will allow the Medes to gain power, even as the Lord allows the Arabs to gain power and rebuild the kingdom of Babylon in the heart of Iraq.
The Book of Revelation, for example, tells us that Babylon will be the epicenter of evil in the last days of history, and will eventually face the judgment of God. The Hebrew prophets Isaiah, Jeremiah and Daniel tell us this, as well, indicating Babylon will be completely destroyed and when the judgment is complete, Babylon will be completely uninhabitable. Indeed, Isaiah 13:20 says of Babylon, "It will never be inhabited or lived in from generation to generation; nor will the Arab pitch his tent there, nor will shepherds make their flocks lie down there."
What's more, Bible prophecy indicates that God will raise up the Medes -- that is, the Kurdish people -- to be an instrument of judgment against Babylon.
  • Isaiah 13:17 -- "Behold, I am going to stir up the Medes against them [the Babylonians]...."
  • Jeremiah 51:11 -- "The Lord has aroused the spirit of the kings of the Medes, because His purpose is against Babylon to destroy it; for it is the vengeance of the Lord...."
  • Jeremiah 51:28-29 -- "Consecrate the nations against her, the kings of the Medes, their governors and all their prefects, and every land of their dominion. So the land quakes and writhes, for the purposes of the Lord against Babylon stand, to make the land of Babylon a desolation without inhabitants...."
How exactly will these eschatological prophecies come to pass? It's too early to say for certain.
But after studying these prophecies, traveling four times to the Iraqi Kurdistan region, meeting with senior Kurdish leaders -- including Kurdish Prime Minister Nechirvan Barzani -- and tracking developments there over the past decade or so, I think it is fair to say we may be seeing some of the prophetic battle lines developing:
  • The hatred of the Kurds/Medes against the Arabs, and vice versa, is steadily growing.
  • The Kurds/Medes and the Arabs are in a continued struggle to control the oil resources that will make either or both of them enormously wealthy and powerful in the End Times.
  • The Kurds/Medes are, step by step, forming into their nation, and possibly their own country.
  • The Kurds/Medes are developing an increasingly effective military force that is able to overpower the Iraqi Arabs at times.
Please keep the Kurdish people in your prayers. There are a growing number of truly born again Christians living in Kurdistan, including many MBBs, Muslim Background Believers. Please pray that they would boldly preach the Gospel, and be able to make many disciples, and help the believers that grow deep in their faith in Christ, especially amidst all the chaos and carnage.
  • "After a decades-long dispute between Arabs and Kurds over the oil-rich northern Iraqi city of Kirkuk, it took just an hour and a half for its fate to be decided," the Associated Press reports. "As al-Qaida-inspired militants advanced across northern Iraq and security forces melted away, Kurdish fighters who have long dominated Kirkuk ordered Iraqi troops out and seized full control of the regional oil hub and surrounding areas, according to a mid-ranking Army officer. He said he was told to surrender his weapons and leave his base.
  • His account was corroborated by an Arab tribal sheik and a photographer who witnessed the looting of army bases after troops left and who related similar accounts of the takeover from relatives in the army. All three spoke to The Associated Press Friday on condition of anonymity because they feared retribution from Kurdish forces.
  • "They said they would defend Kirkuk from the Islamic State," said the Arab officer, who oversaw a warehouse in the city's central military base. He asked that his rank not be made public.
  • He insisted the Iraqi troops had not planned to retreat before the Islamic state. "We were ready to battle to death. We were completely ready," he said at a roadside rest house just inside the semi-autonomous Kurdish region.
  • The Kurdish takeover of the long-disputed city came days after the extremist Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant and other Sunni militants seized much of the country's second largest city of Mosul and Saddam Hussein's hometown of Tikrit before driving south toward Baghdad. Their lightning advance has plunged the country into its worst crisis since the 2011 withdrawal of U.S. troops.
  • A spokesman for Kurdish forces, known as the peshmerga, said they had only moved in after Iraqi troops retreated, assuming control of the "majority of the Kurdistan region" outside the semi-autonomous Kurdish Regional Government.
  • "Peshmerga forces have helped Iraqi soldiers and military leaders when they abandoned their positions," including by helping three generals to fly back to Baghdad from the Kurdish regional capital Erbil, Lieutenant General Jabbar Yawar said in a statement on the regional government's website....
  • Kirkuk, 180 miles (290 kilometers) north of Baghdad, is home to Arabs, Kurds and Turkmen, who all have competing claims to the oil-rich area. Kurds have long wanted to incorporate it into their self-ruled region, but Arabs and Turkmen are opposed.
  • In the 1970s and 1980s the Arab-dominated government in Baghdad drove hundreds of thousands of Kurds out of Kirkuk and surrounding regions, settling Arabs from the south in their place in an attempt to pacify a region that had seen repeated revolts.
  • During the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq in 2003 the highly disciplined peshmerga swept down from the semi-autonomous Kurdish region and established a strong presence in a belt of largely Kurdish towns and villages stretching south toward Baghdad.
  • But the disintegration of Iraqi forces this week seems to have led the peshmerga to assume full control in areas they have long coveted, further enhancing their autonomy from Baghdad and undermining hard-fought U.S. efforts to bring about a stable, multiethnic Iraq.
  • "To a great extent Kurdish forces had been de facto in control of Kirkuk for some time, but now they're completely in control," said F. Gregory Gause, III, a nonresident senior fellow at the Brookings Doha Center.
  • He said it was unlikely the Kurds would seek formal independence from Iraq, however, because such a move would be strongly opposed by neighboring Turkeyand Iran -- both of which have sizable Kurdish minorities -- as well as Washington.

Today's Israel Inspiration

While the Bible makes frequent mention of military affairs and speaks often of soldiers, the important principle that emerges is that which is found in today’s verse. We must always remember that it is not our own efforts that matter, rather it is “He who makes our borders peaceful.” As we pray for the return of the three Israeli teens kidnapped by Hamas, we pray to the One Above to grant success to all of the incredible efforts of the IDF.

From the 4 Corners of the World: Another Picture Collection from New Zealand Part I

Israel's History - a Picture a Day (Beta)

Proving that responsible archivists and librarians digitize and preserve their photographic treasures is the collection of 19th century pictures of the Holy Land in the Presbyterian Research Centre in New Zealand.  We present here a sample of the collection.

We thank Donald Cochrane, the former curator of the photographs and lantern slides, Myke Tymons the current curator, and Eva Garbutt, archivist at Knox  who gave us permission to use their photographs.

The Research Centre's introduction provides some details on the collection:

The Presbyterian Church Archives Research Centre holds a fascinating collection of 144 glass Lantern slides of various scenes from the Holy Land. The majority appear to have been taken in the latter years of the 19th century. While undated, some do carry a manufacturers name or trademark which can act as a guide to dating.

Those high quality slides produced by the Aberdeen firm of George Washington Wilson (marked "GWW"), were produced throughout the late 19th century. Mr Wilson, who died in 1893, received patronage from Queen Victoria and a Royal Warrant due to his obvious abilities. Many slide sets are also numbered which show a considerable number missing...

The New Zealand collection is remarkable for the

Some of these photographs/slides were taken by Frank Mason Good in the 1860s.

Color film was not available until years later. The color slides were transparencies with color applied.

The End Of The Invisible Season - Garris Elkins

Garris Elkins:
The Elijah List

Garris and Jan ElkinsWe are in a season where what has been invisible will now be made known. Those who have gone unnoticed even after years of faithful service will become visible as God confirms and performs His Word in their lives.

As this thought formed in my mind, I saw the dim and partial image of a person walking toward me. With each step forward, their form became more and more visible until they were fully seen. When their image was fully developed, they appeared in a situation where previously they had been invisible.

The Lord is calling His Church into a place of recognition – not for personal recognition, but for the recognition of the presence of the One we carry.

Where answers are needed to save a business, someone will appear who will have a turnaround answer. Where a government is in stalemate, someone will appear in the midst of gridlock with solutions direct from the government of Heaven. Where a family has been bound in deception for multiple generations, a lone believer will finally be recognized and deliver a word that will bring generational freedom.

"I Am Making a Way For You"

free photo flickrAs I continued to pray and understand what the Lord was revealing, He spoke these encouraging words for some who feel they are invisible and unrecognized:

"You feel invisible. No one has noticed you. You have tried to be heard, but nothing has worked. You wanted to have an influence for truth and love, only to have your words land on seemingly deaf ears. You think this is a negative – it is not.

I have been keeping you safe until the time I choose to make your presence known.

"There will be a time for you to be seen and that timing must be My choice. Continue to walk forward in this invisible season and you will walk out into a place of visibility orchestrated by My perfect timing. Don't stop moving forward.

You are able to advance into this new territory because you are not yet seen. I am making a way for you. This is My task, not yours.

(Photo via flickr.com)

"You were created to have a voice and be heard. Make an exchange with Me. Give Me your demand and your need to be heard. In that exchange I will give you a voice – a voice empowered by My Spirit.

"Stay in a Place of Peace"

"Once you are visible stay in the place of My peace. My peace will not be dependent on your surroundings. I am delivering you into this hostile territory for a purpose. The peace you carry and the peace you will experience upon your arrival will be so powerful it will not make sense to you or to those who finally see you.

The forces opposing My plan will see you appearing within their camp not knowing how you got there. Your revealing will be My surprise.

The peace you carry will become your protection. My enveloping peace will also become the platform from which you will speak. Your words will create breakthrough where there would normally be resistance and opposition. Potential battlegrounds will become places of life and peace."
